Irwin's Goal Not Enough For Sharks
Irwin scored the Sharks' lone goal in Wednesday's bitter Game 7 loss to the Kings.Game 7 looked to be off to an auspicious start for the Sharks when Irwin scored in the opening minute of the second period, but the Kings would respond with five unanswered goals. Though Irwin only played in the final two games of the series, he proved to be one of the more active Sharks out there, accumulating four shots on goal, seven hits, and five blocks.
Kings cap historic comeback, oust Sharks in Game 7
Anze Kopitar scored the tiebreaking goal late in the second period and Jonathan Quick made 39 saves to cap the Los Angeles Kings ' historic comeback from three games down with a 5-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks in Game 7 of their first-round series Wednesday night.
Controversial goal help Kings force improbable Game 7
Justin Williams forced the tiebreaking goal underneath Alex Stalock with 8:04 to play, and the Los Angeles Kings beat the San Jose Sharks 4-1 on Monday night, rallying all the way back from an 0-3 series deficit to force a decisive Game 7.
Sharks' Irwin Will Start Monday
Irwin will replace Vlasic (upper body) in the rotation in Game 6 on Monday, CSN Bay Area's Brodie Brazil reports.Irwin will try to fill in for one of the better defensive skaters in the NHL, and will be relied on to help clinch the series Monday. Vlasic's status for a potential game 7 is still in question, so it possible Irwin will see the ice in that game as well, if it is needed
Alex Stalock to start Game 6 for Sharks, Marc-Edouard Vlasic out
The Sharks will make a change in net for Game 6 with Alex Stalock subbing in for Antti Niemi. Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic won't play for San Jose either.
|Matt Irwin has a lot of potential, but it's not always been clear where he stands on the Sharks. But after playing most of the regular-season games in the last two seasons, Irwin looks as though he's here to stay. And he should see some extra ice time with the departure of Dan Boyle and the stated team goal of refocusing on the youth movement. Irwin's increased role this year should involve a little extra ice time, especially if Brent Burns makes the move back to wing at any point during the season. So those 19 points from last season should, especially as the team looks to replace Dan Boyle's power play time. San Jose will want an active defensive tandem that they can put out to force some offense and Irwin could easily be a part of that plan, not least of all because he likes to shoot the puck (147 shots last season). He could be an interesting dark horse and a player who is in line for a breakout year — if one ever comes — in one of his next two seasons. (Updated 8/13/14) |
