| Just weeks after being crowned the 2008-09 All-Star game MVP, forward Alexei Kovalev experienced one of the top lowlights of his career. Kovalev was sent home for two games because of poor play, pretty much tainting what has been a standout career for the 16-year veteran. It seemed like an easy cop out for the Canadiens front office since the team experienced a sub-par season, but it also seemed to signal that Kovalev would not be back once he hit the free-agent market in the offseason. It ended up being the case. Kovalev signed a two-year deal with Ottawa, joining his fourth NHL franchise. The Canadiens were frustrated with Kovalev's play in '08-09 because he struggled for the most part after posting 35 goals and 84 points in 2007-08. Kovalev managed 26 goals and 65 points in 78 games last season. He did finish the year on a high note with 11 goals and 19 points in his last 17 games, which allowed him to cash in with the Senators. In 1,151 career NHL games with the Rangers, Penguins and Canadiens, Kovalev has 394 goals and 547 assists. We aren't banking on 80 points from Kovalev in 2009-10, but that's not to say he won't be a key contributor, even if Dany Heatley isn't traded. Kovalev is no worse than a No. 4 Fantasy forward Draft Day. (Updated 8/19/09) |
