Lidstrom going bananas in January: Red Wings D Nicklas Lidstrom scored a goal and added an assist on Friday against the Predators. Lidstrom netted his sixth goal on a power play 5:55 into the second. He has three goals and four assists during a four-game point streak.

Lidstrom has a season-high five goals, 10 assists, 15 points and a plus-10 rating in 13 January games. He has 24 points in his last 28 appearances. Lidstrom is heating up offensively in the second half of the season, as he has been prone to do. We told Fantasy owners to be patient with Lidstrom and he is finally living up to his billing as a high-end Fantasy option.

Crosby, Pens earn shootout win over Wings in Finals rematch
Sidney Crosby scored in regulation and the shootout and the Penguins overcame Jimmy Howard's second successive 46-save game to beat the Red Wings 2-1 on Sunday in the rivals' first game since Pittsburgh won Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Miettinen tallies two goals again for Wild in win over Red Wings
Antti Miettinen got Minnesota going with a pair of first-period goals, and Detroit's defense fell apart down the stretch in the Wild's 5-2 victory over the Red Wings on Wednesday.

| Bobby Orr can rest easy for at least a few more seasons after Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom failed to bring home his seventh Norris Trophy (top NHL defenseman) in 2008-09. Lidstrom was gunning for his fourth straight Norris and seventh overall last season but was beaten by Boston's Zdeno Chara. Orr holds the all-time record of eight, so his accomplishment will stand for at least a few more years. The personal loss still doesn't detract from what Lidstrom did on the ice in '08-09. Detroit's all-time highest scoring defenseman posted 16 goals, 59 points and a plus-31 rating in 78 games. He tied a career-high with 10 power-play scores and continues to add to his already impressive legacy. Lidstrom is currently 12th all-time among NHL defensemen in goals (228), seventh in assists (769), eighth in points (997) and seventh in power-play goals (115). The 10-time All-Star has played more games (1,330) in the first 17 years of his career than any other player in the history of the NHL, missing just 32 games in that span. He also has the highest plus-minus rating (409) in the NHL since 1991-92, his first year in the league. Lidstrom has been a solid two-way blueliner since his rookie campaign and not much is expected to change in 2009-10. Continue to view Lidstrom as an elite Fantasy defenseman. (Updated 8/17/09) |
