Modano out following appendix surgery: Mike Modano of the Dallas Stars is out indefinitely after the star center underwent surgery to remove his appendix. The 39-year-old Modano, who holds the NHL career scoring record for U.S.-born players, underwent the surgery on Monday.

Modano has appeared in 54 of the Stars' 68 games this season, scoring 13 goals and 13 assists for 26 points. He had his best stretch of games in late January when Dallas had some depth issues due to injury. But as the team has gotten healthy, Modano has struggled offensively. He has no goals and two points in his last 11 games. He has very low-end Fantasy appeal when healthy.

| By the numbers, Mike Modano is the NHL's best American-born skater of all-time. When he scored twice against the Sharks Nov. 7, 2007, he surpassed Phil Housley with 1,233 career points. Modano was contemplating retiring after the 2007-08 season, but buddy and former general manager Brett Hull convinced him to return in 2008-09. Modano then added on to his career totals with 46 points in 80 games. Modano now has 1,329 points (543 goals) in 1,400 games. The 39-year-old Michigan native opted to return again in 2009-10 despite Hull being let go as GM and Marc Crawford taking over as head coach. But Modano has missed just two games the last two seasons and has shown great durability for a player his age. He can definitely continue to be a veteran leader for Dallas, but Fantasy owners can't forget that Modano has only totaled more than 57 points just once in the last four seasons. His best days are well in the past. The 20-year veteran remains just a low-end Fantasy forward. He also has value in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed and faceoff stats.
