| Hockey fans better get used to seeing Saku Koivu in a different sweater in 2009-10. After 13 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, Koivu signed a one-year contract with the Ducks in the offseason. The Finnish center is now reunited with fellow countryman Teemu Selanne. Koivu posted 191 goals and 641 points in 792 games with the Canadiens. Ducks general manager Bob Murray said, "Saku Koivu's character and leadership qualities are unquestioned. He is a skilled playmaker and we are thrilled to add him to our team." Koivu totaled 16 goals and 50 points in 65 games with the Habs in 2008-09. He got off to a fast start with 19 points in his first 23 games, but then an ankle injury popped up and kept Koivu out several weeks. He wasn't the same player again until late in the season. Koivu will be a valuable veteran presence for Anaheim, but no longer will be the star center. That belongs to Ryan Getzlaf. Koivu will likely spend a majority of time on the second line with Selanne and at the same time fend off rising prospect Andrew Ebbett. Koivu's production and ice time has declined the last two seasons, so you have to wonder if Father Time is finally catching up to him. Consider Koivu more of a No. 4 or No. 5 Fantasy forward Draft Day. (Updated 8/17/09) |
