Khabibulin likely done for season: Edmonton Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin will have surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back and is expected to be out 12 weeks. He'll have the operation Thursday in Los Angeles, the team said on Wednesday. The Oilers didn't provide a timeline for his return, saying only that he's "out indefinitely," but Khabibulin's agent, Jay Grossman, said the goalie will need 12 weeks to recover from surgery. That leaves him a narrow window to try and return during the regular season. Jeff Deslauriers has been the Oilers' starting goalie in Khabibulin's absence and Devan Dubnyk has been the backup. Back - IR. Likely out for the season (Updated - 1/13/10)
|
| Fantasy Analysis |
Khabibulin hasn't played since a 3-2 shootout loss to Columbus on Nov. 16. He has a 7-9-2 record with a 3.03 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage this season. The 37-year-old signed a $15-million, four-year contract with Edmonton over the summer. The Oilers always feared Khabibulin would have to go this route and their greatest fears were realized. If you need the roster spot, then we advise you to cut Khabibulin since its unlikely he will play this season. (Updated 01/13/2010).

| In Nikolai We Trust. At least that's what the Edmonton front office was saying when they signed the free-agent goalie to a four-year contract in the offseason. When Edmonton couldn't come to terms with 2008-09 starter Dwayne Roloson, they turned their attention to the free-agent market and honed in on the former Blackhawk. It's been quite a whirlwind year for Khabibulin. Last summer, the Blackhawks were looking to trade the 36-year-old netminder after signing Cristobal Huet. But Chicago found no takers and went with a two-goalie system. As soon as Joel Quenneville took over as head coach, he anointed Khabibulin as his top goalie. Khabibulin, unfortunately, only played in 42 games due to a nagging groin injury but was largely responsible for getting the team to the Western Conference finals. He went 25-8-7 with a 2.33 GAA, .919 save percentage and three shutouts in the regular season, and followed that up with an 8-6-0 record with 2.93 GAA and .898 save percentage in the playoffs. The stats really don't tell the storyline of all the clutch saves Khabibulin made. From the start of the season Khabibulin was set out to prove he could still play at a high level in the NHL, and he did just that. Khabibulin now becomes Edmonton's No. 1 goalie with Jeff Drouin-Deslaurie backing him up. Khabibulin hasn't played 70 games since 2001-02 with the Lightning and has had his fair share of injuries the last few seasons. He still has 20 or more wins in three straight seasons, but also had 20 or more losses in three straight years before posting just eight in '08-09. Because of his age and the fact he no longer plays on a top contender like Chicago, Khabibulin remains a No. 2 Fantasy goalie Draft Day. The Oilers TG is also a No. 2 option. (Updated 8/17/09) |
