Gonchar has six points in four games: Penguins D Sergei Gonchar tallied a pair of assists and finished at plus-2 on Monday against the Rangers. It was his second straight multi-point game and second time he had two assists in his last four games. He has one goal and five assists in that span.

Gonchar's biggest hurdle the last two seasons has been the injury bug. When he has been in the lineup he has been his usual spectacular self. Gonchar is still an elite Fantasy option at the ripe age of 35.

| The Penguins had to enter the 2008-09 season down their top two defensemen in Ryan Whitney and Sergei Gonchar. Whitney went down first with a foot injury and he was followed by Gonchar, who suffered a devastating shoulder injury during a preseason game. Gonchar ended up needing surgery and missed most of the '08-09 season. However, he did return for the team's stretch run and was instrumental in the Penguins road to the Stanley Cup. From the second Gonchar hit the ice, he didn't look a bit rusty. It was like Pittsburgh added an All-Star at the trade deadline. Gonchar finished the season with six goals and 19 points in 25 games, while adding another three goals and 14 points in 22 playoff games. He even made it through the latter rounds playing on a torn MCL. Gonchar attained 60-plus points the previous two seasons leading up to '08-09 and likely would have challenged that plateau again last season had he been healthy. Gonchar's knee is still a bit of a question mark heading into 2009-10, and at the ripe age of 35, injuries are a major concern for the Russian defender.
