Witt shocked by demotion: The Sports Xchange reports Brendan Witt hasn't played a minor-league game since reaching the NHL in 1996. But that is about to change. The Islanders assigned the 14-year veteran defenseman to AHL Bridgeport after he cleared waivers Thursday. Witt, who has five points and a minus-18 rating in 42 games this season, has one year remaining on his contract worth $3 million. He had been on the injured list with calf and knee injuries since Jan. 8. "I'm kind of shocked, but it is what it is," Witt said. "I think I could've played better, but it is what it is. Did it deserve this? I don't know, but it's just the way the business is and I'll try not to take it personal." (Updated 02/05/2010).

General manager Garth Snow indicated the decision was a reflection of the team's ongoing transition to youth. "The nature of the beast is that in hockey sometimes you have to make tough decisions and this was certainly one of them," Snow said. "Everyone knows what Brendan brings to the table, he's a quality person and a fierce competitor." Added coach Scott Gordon: "I'm sure (Witt's) disappointed. But we're a team in transition." Witt had marginal Fantasy appeal to begin win, but perhaps a contender might consider trading for the vet blueliner. Ignore him in Fantasy until further notice. (Updated 02/05/2010).

Richards' tally difference maker for Stars against Islanders
Brad Richards scored the tiebreaking goal late in the second period, Marty Turco stopped all seven shots he faced in the final period, and the Dallas Stars snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Friday.

| It definitely got ugly at times in 2008-09 for Islanders defenseman Brendan Witt. Among the lowlights for the 34-year-old veteran was a five-game suspension for elbowing Niklas Hagman, missing 12 games with a lower-body injury and totaling a career-low minus-34 rating. He also failed to score a goal for the first time in his career. The only positives were that Witt led the team with 146 blocked shots and was second with 142 hits. He had just nine points in 65 games. Witt has never been a guy on the ice for offense, so he hasn't been a special Fantasy player. He is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats and PIM. (Updated 8/18/09) |
