| Fantasy Analysis |
Points haven't been the issue for Niedermayer in 2009-10. It has been his defense and his shocking minus-16 rating through 56 games. Niedermayer was a plus-player for most of his career, but the last three seasons has been held under even. Perhaps he just isn't as quick as he used to be. If you can stand the bad plus-minus, keep Niedermayer active in Fantasy. (Updated 02/01/2010).

| The Ducks centered their offseason plans on whether or not defenseman Scott Niedermayer would return for a 19th season in 2009-10. After much deliberation, Niedermayer told the Ducks he was returning in late June and that prompted Anaheim to trade fellow defenseman Chris Pronger to the Flyers. It was the second straight year Niedermayer made an early decision to postpone full-time retirement after coming out of semi-retirement during the 2007-08 season. He showed in 2008-09 that he can still skate with the best of them and wants one more shot at winning the Stanley Cup after Anaheim fell short in the Western Conference semifinals last season. Niedermayer played in all 82 games last season for just the second time in his illustrious career. He got off to kind of a sluggish start but finished strong with 40 points in his last 44 games after Jan. 1. Niedermayer had a season-high 17 points (16 assists) in January. For the season he ranked third among NHL defensemen in scoring (59 points) and assists (45). Niedermayer has 50 or more points in four of his last five seasons and injury might be the only thing that keeps him from that plateau again in '09-10. Niedermayer still has high-end Fantasy appeal.
