Smyth might miss one month: NHL.com reports Kings LW Ryan Smyth might miss a month of action while recovering from an upper-body injury sustained on Monday against the Panthers. Coach Terry Murray and general manager Dean Lombardi would not disclose the nature of Smyth's injury. "It could be up to four weeks with that," Murray said. "It's very unfortunate that you lose a player that's an important player for your team, that's going to be out up to that length of time. But you know, you take a look around the league, there's all kinds of injuries to top players. You've got to deal with it. It's part of the game." (Updated 11/18/2009).

This injury really puts a damper on a great start to Smyth's Los Angeles career. He has been a perfect fit on the team's top line with Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams. He is threatening as a point-per-game player and has emerged as a high-end Fantasy option. Keep Smyth reserved in Fantasy until further notice. (Updated 11/18/2009).

| For all that Ryan Smyth did for the Avalanche during a rocky season in 2008-09, he sure wasn't feeling the love as his name came up numerous times in trade talks. The Avalanche's fortunes really didn't turn for the better since Smyth arrived in 2007-08 with a hefty five-year contract, so the team had been looking to unload his salary. They finally found a suitor in the offseason -- the Los Angeles Kings. Amid all the trade rumors, the 33-year-old winger continued to show up for work with the same intensity he has displayed since making his NHL debut in 1994-95 and that was part of the allure for the Kings. Despite missing the final five games of the season with a broken hand, Smyth tied Milan Hejduk for the Avalanche lead with 59 points last season. He also led Colorado with 33 assists and was second with 26 goals. Smyth, who notched his 300th career goal the same night Hejduk netted his 300th Jan. 18 vs. Calgary, also led the Avalanche with 257 shots and tied for first on the club in both power-play (10) and game-winning goals (3). He was often the team's top offensive player throughout the season, as Smyth recorded a team-high for points in December (14), January (12) and February (13). Smyth's Fantasy value doesn't real change for the better since he is moving to Los Angeles, so consider him a No. 4 or No. 5 Fantasy forward Draft Day. (Updated 8/17/09) |
