| The Blackhawks have been serious players in the free-agent market the last two seasons. In 2008, they arguably landed the most-coveted defenseman in Brian Campbell, and believe it or not they one-upped themselves in 2009 when they signed one of the most-regarded forwards in Marian Hossa. The Slovakian landed a 12-year, $62 million deal after spending one season with the Red Wings. But it was certainly another magical season. Hossa scored 40 times in 2008-09 and became just the 8th player in NHL history to record 40 goals for three different teams. Hossa also scored 40 goals as a member of the Ottawa Senators (2002-03) and the Atlanta Thrashers (2006-07). Hossa has been one of the NHL's premier goal scorers for the better part of the last decade. He has 30 or more goals in seven of the last eight seasons. He will look to continue to that trend in 2009-10, but first he has to prove healthy. Hossa banged up his shoulder during the '08-09 playoffs and the Blackhawks are keeping a close eye on his progress. He could be questionable for the start of the season, but we should know more once training camp opens. The Blackhawks need to make up for the loss of Martin Havlat (29 goals), so getting Hossa on the ice is imperative. Hossa still has high-end Fantasy appeal when healthy, but he might be considered a bit of an injury-risk selection with this latest development. (Updated 8/17/09) |
