Belanger on another nice run: Wild C Eric Belanger scored a goal, tallied an assist and finished at plus-1 on Monday against the Penguins. Guillaume Latendresse led a rush and fed Belanger for his 12th goal, one off Andrew Brunette's team lead. Belanger's shot took a funny bounce, as if it were a grounder to shortstop on artificial baseball grass, and glanced off Marc-Andre Fleury and into the net to tie it at 1.

| Fantasy Analysis |
Belanger has six goals and five assists in his last 10 games. He looks like the player that burst out of the gate with 12 points in his first 14 games. Unfortunately, Belanger then went cold for several weeks before heating up again in late December. Belanger has 27 points in 45 games and appears on his way to his first 40-point season. Still, all this inconsistency worries us. Belanger remains a low-end Fantasy option.

Wild's Khudobin stops 38 to beat Flyers in first NHL start
Anton Khudobin made 38 saves in his first NHL start, and Cal Clutterbuck and Owen Nolan scored in the Minnesota Wild's 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.

Miettinen tallies two goals again for Wild in win over Red Wings
Antti Miettinen got Minnesota going with a pair of first-period goals, and Detroit's defense fell apart down the stretch in the Wild's 5-2 victory over the Red Wings on Wednesday.

| Eric Belanger is not a flashy center, won't be up for a scoring title any time soon and doesn't have a great chance of winning the league MVP. But ask any team he has played for and Belanger is Mr. Reliable. He works hard to win faceoffs, pick up the timely goal and kill off penalties. Belanger has totaled between 33-37 points the last six seasons. He had 13 goals and 23 assists in 79 games with the Wild in 2008-09. He was second on the team with 1,205 faceoffs taken and 626 faceoffs won. Even with an offensive-minded coach like Todd Richards ready to take over in 2009-10, we expect Belanger to still do what he does best. Belanger is best left for Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for short-handed and faceoff stats. (Updated 8/17/09) |
