Giggy still can't beat Sharks: Ryane Clowe scored with less than seven minutes left in the third period, leading the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night and sending Jean-Sebastien Giguere to his first loss since being acquired from Anaheim on Jan. 31. Giguere had a 1-0 lead after the first period before San Jose scored twice in the first 5:41 of the second. The game was tied heading into the third before Clowe got the go-ahead score.

Giguere had won his first two starts with his new team, both shutouts. But they were against Eastern Conference foes. Giggy went up against a familiar opponent, San Jose, on Monday and the results were the same -- a loss. Giguere is 0-3-0 in three outings against San Jose. Luckily, he won't have to face them again this season. Giguere is going to see most of the starts down the stretch for Toronto, so he is a decent No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end start.

| Jean-Sebastien Giguere endured the worst year of his NHL career in 2008-09, but it paled in comparison to the loss he suffered away from the ice. Giguere lost his father in December and it had a profound effect on his performance. He struggled to cope with his father's passing and the mental aspect prevented him from performing at a high level down the stretch. He was eventually replaced in net by Jonas Hiller and watched his teammate lead the Ducks all the way to the Western Conference semifinals. Giguere appeared in just 46 games, the lowest total since his first full season with Anaheim in 2000-01. He went 19-18-6 with a 3.10 GAA, .900 save percentage and two shutouts. Giguere began the season as a No. 1 Fantasy goalie, but lost that status as the season progressed. His status for the 2009-10 season remains a bit cloudy as well. Giguere is signed for two more seasons, but Hiller is also under contract through the '09-10 season. If neither goalie is dealt before training camp, the two will likely do battle to see who starts in net. And then it still might not be a case where one guy always starts since both goalies have shown great ability in net. Giguere is looking more like a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy goalie until the situation is resolved in Anaheim. The Ducks TG is more of a high-end No. 2 Fantasy option. (Updated 8/17/09) |
