| The Capitals goaltender situation is in a bit of disarray. Jose Theodore was the Caps’ starter for the entire 2008-09 season but was supplanted in net after only one game in the playoffs by Russian rookie Semyon Varlamov. Theodore still has one year left on his deal with Washington and the team has not come out yet and said that Varlamov is definitely the No. 1 goalie in the nation’s capital. It’s hard to imagine that Theodore would end up getting the starting job over Varlamov and is likely going to have to take a backup role with the team as the Caps will likely want to have a veteran presence in case Varlamov struggles. The team also has Michael Neuvirth waiting in the AHL and is expected to be ready to go. No matter what the Capitals decide to do; Theodore is not likely going to be a highly valuable Fantasy G on Draft Day unless he lands a starting gig with another team. Add Theodore as a handcuff for Varlamov but don’t expect him to be a high-end producer. The Capitals TG has the potential to be a high-end option as the team is expected to be one of the top contenders in the Eastern Conference this season. (Updated 8/18/09) |
