Quinn comes up with new checking line: The Sports Xchange reports Oilers head coach Pat Quinn is packaging underachieving veterans Ethan Moreau, Shawn Horcoff and Fernando Pisani together on a checking line. At nearly $13 million, it's a pretty expensive third line, but they're not scoring so he might as well give them something else to do. "I thought I would put the experience together," Quinn said. "I said at the start of the season that we don't have those checking sort of people. We were looking to use Horcoff as a good two-way guy and hopefully get some offense going somewhere else. But our offense has dried up on us." (Updated 01/24/2010).

The trio shut down Vancouver's top line Wednesday but gave up the game-deciding goal in the final minute Friday against Dallas. They are a combined minus-34 on the season. We don't expect much from Moreau and Pisani, but to see Horcoff demoted to a checking-line is depressing. All three of these players have marginal Fantasy appeal until they get their act together. | The Oilers put a lot of faith in center Shawn Horcoff by signing him to a six-year contract extension in the summer of 2008. Why? Well, he had major shoulder surgery just six months before and there was no telling if he would return to form. From a Fantasy standpoint, it was a disappointing 2008-09 campaign for Horcoff. He struggled with his offensive game all season after totaling 50 points (21 goals) in 53 games before the injury in 2007-08. Horcoff returned in '08-09 with just 17 goals and 53 points in 80 games and certainly never really looked like a point-per-game threat. But that's from a Fantasy perspective. From the Oilers' vantage point, it was a successful season. Horcoff never relapsed with his injury, tied for second on the team in points, was third in assists (36) and fourth in goals. He also won a team-high 53.9 percent of his faceoffs. He finished first in the NHL with 1,756 faceoffs taken and 947 faceoff wins. His shoulder definitely held up in the faceoff circle and the Oilers hope his offense will catch up in 2009-10 now that Pat Quinn is behind the bench. Horcoff is a must-own Fantasy option in leagues that reward heavily for faceoff stats, but is merely a No. 5 or No. 6 Fantasy forward in standard formats. (Updated 8/17/09) |
