LaBarbera triumphant over Hawks: Phoenix backup goalie Jason LaBarbera made 28 saves through overtime, then stopped two of three Blackhawks in the shootout during a 2-1 win against Chicago on Friday. After LaBarbera made a pad save on Duncan Keith's drive from the top of the slot, Colin Fraser fired the rebound over LaBarbera's glove from the right circle for the first score of the game at 4:46. He didn't allow a goal the rest of the way and made 17 saves after the first period. (Updated 02/05/2010).

| Fantasy Analysis |
Ilya Bryzgalov, the Coyotes' No. 1 goalie, got the night off and is expected to start Saturday in Dallas. He was in the net in Phoenix's previous game Tuesday night, when the Coyotes beat Nashville 1-0 in a 10-round shootout. LaBarbera has won his last two starts and could get a few more outings thanks to some strong performances. However, Phoenix is expected to lean on Bryzgalov heavily down the stretch, so LaBarbera still has marginal Fantasy appeal. The Coyotes TG is a decent start. (Updated 02/05/2010).

| Jason LaBarbera had his chance to be a starting goalie in the NHL, but when he couldn't get the job done the last few seasons with the Kings it became quite evident the 6-3, 225-pound netminder is probably better suited for a role as a backup. That's where he will begin the 2009-10 season in Phoenix after inking a two-year deal in the offseason. LaBarbera began the 2008-09 season as Los Angeles' starting goalie but was eventually replaced by the tandem of Erik Ersberg and Jonathan Quick. The Kings then traded LaBarbera to Vancouver, where he finished the season as Roberto Luongo's backup. He went 8-10-6 with a 2.78 GAA, .901 save percentage and two shutouts in 28 games. LaBarbera will now serve time behind Ilya Bryzgalov and hop in net when the Russian netminder needs a breather. LaBarbera is more of a Fantasy flier in leagues that use average points per game or a handcuff option for Bryzgalov owners. (Updated 8/17/09) |
