Lecavalier deals with trade rumors: The Sports Xchange reports once again, Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier finds his name churning through the rumor mill even though he holds a no-trade/no-movement clause in his contract. Recent reports in The Hockey News suggested that a potential sale of the franchise to Boston-based financial advisor Jeffrey Vinik would mean a slashing of payroll with Lecavalier's name at the top of the list. Lecavalier is in the first year of an 11-year contract worth $85 million. "We have no plans on doing anything," Lightning general manager Brian Lawton said. "I have no plans and I haven't approached him. Vinny is playing very well after a slow start, and he needs to continue to play well and even pick it up. That should be the focus, and quite frankly we're sorry that he has to even read other things, but there is nothing we can do about it. It's a free country, and we respect that. ... And it's so erroneous and baseless that at some point you wonder, where is the accountability?" (Updated 02/01/2010).

| Fantasy Analysis |
Every season as the trade deadline approaches, Lecavalier's name seems to pop up in trade rumors. And every year has come and passed with Lecavalier continuing to wear the only NHL jersey he has ever put on in his career. This year, he deals with them the same way he always has. "It's just stuff in the newspaper. I don't really listen to it," Lecavalier said. Lecavalier probably wouldn't mind being shipped to a Canadian team, particularly Montreal, but he is definitely not demanding it. As we learned with the Dion Phaneuf trade that anything is possible, but don't plan on Vinny being dealt. As Lawton said, Lecavalier is finally playing well and is back to being a high-end Fantasy start. (Updated 02/01/2010).

| Vincent Lecavalier had a forgettable season in 2008-09, dealing with a litany of problems and distractions that all started when he underwent arthroscopic surgery on the right shoulder he dislocated the season prior. Then he inked an 11-year deal with the Lightning, a move the team received heavy scrutiny for. Lecavalier didn’t end up playing in an exhibition game until the last day in September and was noticeably rusty. New coach Barry Melrose then limited his playing time, a move he didn’t seem to take to. Montreal expressed interest in obtaining him, a move that may have distracted him from his performance on the ice. Finally, he had his season cut short in early April when he underwent wrist surgery. When the dust settled, Lecavalier ended up with only 67 points in 77 games, his lowest output since the 2003-04 season when he had 66. Rick Tocchet is coming back to coach the team in 2009-10 and hopefully a full training camp and recovery from wrist surgery will allow Vinny to improve. He has the potential to be a high-end Fantasy option but expectations must be tempered after last year’s disappointing campaign. (Updated 8/18/09) |
