Lombardi has career-best five points: Dave Tippett has pushed all the right buttons in his first season as the coach of the once-lowly Phoenix Coyotes. On Monday night, he switched Matthew Lombardi from center to right wing. The result was two goals and three assists for a career-high five points from the 27-year-old Canadian in a 6-1 rout of Edmonton. Lombardi had a hand in the first five goals. Lombardi's goals came in a span of 1:41 at the end of the first period and start of the second to put the Coyotes up 3-0. Lombardi's first score came with 31 seconds left in the first period, when he maneuvered the puck across the ice in front of the Oilers' net, then flipped it backhand past the goalie from the left side. He made it 3-0 1:11 into the second period on a slap shot from in front of the net over Jeff Deslauriers' right shoulder after a nice pass from Jim Vandermeer. (Updated 02/09/2010).

| Fantasy Analysis |
Lombardi had no points in his previous five games and has been in an offensive lull since losing linemate Scottie Upshall to a torn ACL. Tippett had to do something to snap Lombardi out of his funk and the move to right wing seemed to do it. Lombardi has only one season of 20 goals, but the potential is there. He just mostly plays at center and passes more often than shoots. Don't get overly excited about the offensive outburst until Lombardi can be a multi-point threat on a regular basis. Waiver Wire: Bullish on Benoit in Montreal
Benoit Pouliot was a major disappointment since being taken fourth overall in 2005, but he seems to finally be hitting his stride with the Canadiens. Our Michael Hurcomb touches on that and more in his Playing the Waiver Wire.

| The Flames really had high hopes for Matthew Lombardi after the Montreal native totaled 20 goals and 46 points during his breakout season in 2006-07. Unfortunately, he regressed instead of progressing and that allowed Calgary to part ways with the 27-year-old forward at the 2008-09 trade deadline. Lombardi was a key figure in the trade that brought Olli Jokinen from Phoenix to Calgary. In the end, the change of scenery seemed to spark Lombardi. He totaled five goals and 11 assists in 19 games with the Coyotes. He had 14 goals and tied his career high with 46 points in 69 games. Lombardi had a career-high 32 assists and plus-13 rating. He also managed at least one power-play and one short-handed goal for a fifth straight season. Lombardi continued to be effective in the faceoff circle as well, winning 52 percent of the time (438 for 843). Phoenix seems very happy with Lombardi and expect to feature him prominently in 2009-10. It also just happens to be Lombardi's walk year as well. Consider Lombardi a decent Fantasy sleeper Draft Day.
