Thrills, spills mark season's quarter pole
Stars haven't been immune to the injury bug. Bad news, right? Wes Goldstein says that despite some bumps and bruises, the season has been thrilling through the first quarter.

| It might take hockey patrons a little time to adjust to seeing Marian Gaborik in a Rangers sweater. After spending the first eight seasons of his career with the Minnesota Wild, the two sides parted ways in the offseason as Gaborik inked a five-year, $37.5 million contract with the Rangers. New York finally gets their feature winger to replace Jaromir Jagr, who left for Russia after the 2007-08 season, and Gaborik gets away from a defensive style of play and into a system more suited for his offensive prowess. Gaborik was limited to just 17 games in 2008-09 because of a nagging hip injury. He still totaled 13 goals and 23 points in 17 games, but it was a grave disappointment after he totaled a career-high 42 goals and 83 points in 2007-08. As the Wild's first draft pick in 2000 (third overall), Gaborik leaves as the highest-scoring player in franchise history with 219 goals and 437 points in 502 games. New York is overly excited about Gaborik's arrival since they can see him being a point-per-game threat in a high-octane offense after he did that much damage playing for a defensive stickler like Jacques Lemaire. There is always injury-risk with Gaborik, but he remains a must-own Fantasy player Draft Day. (Updated 8/18/09) |
