Walz announces his retirement
(12/1/07) Minnesota Wild center Wes Walz announced his retirement as expected Saturday, ending his 13-year NHL career as the team's career leader in games played. Walz had one goal and three assists in 11 games this season before leaving the team to contemplate his future. Neither he nor the Wild offered any specifics about his leave of absence, which lasted a month, but Walz said at a news conference Saturday that he didn't feel like he was "on top of his game." The 37-year-old has four children and said he's eager to spend more time with his family.
Walz expected to announce retirement
(12/1/07) There finally appears to be an answer coming for the Wes Walz saga in Minnesota. The Wild said late Friday night that they will hold a press conference with their missing center on Saturday morning, when Walz is expected to announce his retirement after 12 seasons in the NHL. The center played in the first 11 games this season, but then suddenly and mysteriously disappeared. The team excused him for "personal reasons" on Nov. 1 and granted him an indefinite leave of absence on Nov. 8. The Associated Press left a message with Walz's agent, Jay Grossman, seeking comment. Wild spokesman Aaron Sickman said the team would have no further comment until the press conference.
Walz situation still murky for now
(11/16/07) Don't look for a resolution to the Wes Walz situation anytime soon, said Wild president and general manager Doug Risebrough, who recently returned from a scouting trip to Europe. Walz has not talked publicly since leaving the Wild after an Oct. 31 practice. Speculation has been that he is contemplating retirement. The Wild is 2-3 since he left. "This is in Wes' hands. We are not spending any time contacting Wes," Risebrough said before the Wild's game in Edmonton on Thursday. "I am not pursuing any information. I understand your need to know, but you're asking the wrong person because I'm not trying to find out. That's what needs to be to solve the problem, and I'm comfortable with that."
Walz still not communicating
(11/12/07) The Sports Xchange notes: Veteran center Wes Walz isn't with the team anymore because he's contemplating retirement. Left wing Pavol Demitra is back in the Twin Cities with a groin injury. Right wing Marian Gaborik is still out with a groin injury. And checker Stephane Veilleux, with a broken cheekbone, would play if the Wild would let him. As significant as the Gaborik-Demitra injuries is the Walz absence. He's been put on non-roster status. The Wild will continue to pay Walz's $900,000 salary. He will also count against the team's salary cap until he decides whether he wants to continue playing hockey. "Wes Walz has requested and been granted an indefinite leave of absence from the team," the Wild said in a statement last week.
Walz granted indefinite leave
(11/8/07) Wes Walz is still missing from the Minnesota Wild, who officially granted an indefinite leave of absence for the veteran center on Thursday. The team said Walz requested the leave, but provided no further details. Wild general manager Doug Risebrough and assistant general manager Tom Lynn were unavailable for comment. Walz's agent, Jay Grossman, didn't return a phone call. Walz, one of two players remaining from the team's inaugural season in 2000-01, was initially excused on Nov. 1. Lynn has said Walz's situation is not related to health or family.
