The winner came on what should have been a routine save. And there appears to be a rift developing between the 'tender and his teammates after some critical comments Tim Thomas made about his team after Game 4. Thomas hasn't been the goalie he was in last year's postseason and he has been outplayed by the Caps' Braden Holtby. He'll need to better on Sunday. (Updated 04/21/2012).

Both goaltenders were in shutdown mode on Saturday afternoon in the Capitals and Bruins' second game of their first-round series. But in the second overtime Nicklas Backstrom found himself some space and fired this wrister past Tim Thomas to send the Capitals back to D.C. with the series split.

Braden Holtby was outstanding for the Capitals, but he didn't get much help from the players in front of him.
Thomas, who was expected to take a back seat to Tuukka Rask this past season on the heels of offseason hip surgery, bounced back in a big way, reclaiming the starting gig in Boston en route to compiling a 35-11-9 record, with a sparking 2.00 GAA and .938 save percentage in 57 games (including 55 starts). That was enough to earn him his second Vezina Trophy. At 37, the unorthodox/acrobatic Thomas is on top of his game and he'll enter next season as the B's undisputed starter. Fortunately for the team, the capable Rask will remain on hand to take some of the workload burden off of Thomas, who must also make room in his trophy case for the Conn Smyth Trophy.
