Thrashers debut Oduya on Friday: D Johnny Oduya, who was acquired Thursday from New Jersey as part of the Ilya Kovalchuk trade, made his Atlanta debut on Friday against the Capitals. He had no points in 20:38 of ice time and finished at minus-1.

The 28-year-old Oduya has two goals and two assists in 40 games with New Jersey. Oduya, who will play for Sweden in the Olympics, has been slowed in 2009-10 due to injury and hasn't been very effective as an offensive outlet in a defensive system. That could change in Atlanta. However, Atlanta has Ron Hainsey, Tobias Enstrom, Zach Bogosian and Ron Hainsey, so Oduya still might get to focus on defense. He is a decent puck mover but not a great scorer. Oduya has low-end Fantasy appeal.

| One of the Devils' top priorities heading into the offseason was to re-sign defenseman Johnny Oduya. They accomplished their goal very quickly, agreeing to a deal with the three-year veteran right before the opening of free agency July 1. The Devils have been very pleased with Oduya's progress since his rookie season in 2006-07. He played in a career-high 82 games last season, while leading Devils' defenders with seven goals. Oduya also finished second among defensemen in assists (22) and points (29) -- both career highs. Oduya posted a plus-21 rating and has been at plus-48 the last two seasons. He was very clutch for the Devils in 2008-09, as he finished fourth with four game-winning goals. He was also third on the team with 127 blocked shots. Oduya is one of the Devils' top-logging skaters and better two-way defenders. Still, he is not an elite offensive weapon and has low-end Fantasy appeal Draft Day. He is also useful in leagues that reward short-handed stats and plus-minus rating. (Updated 8/18/09) |
