C. Ward to be shut down?: Sportsnet.ca's Nick Kypreos tweeted that Hurricanes G Cam Ward (back), who was scheduled to see a back specialist on Monday, could be shut down for the season. The Raleigh News & Observer also reports that Ward will be observed by doctors for the next couple of weeks. (Updated 02/08/2010).

Back - Out indefinitely (Updated - 2/8/10)

| Fantasy Analysis |
We've already had one goalie -- Nikolai Khabibulin -- shut down with a back issue this season, so the former enforcer Kypreos might not be too crazy with this prediction. Then again, he did take a few shots to the head during his career, so don't go and drop Ward just yet in any format. While Ward and the Canes were really struggling earlier this season, both had seen a resurgence before this injury popped up. Ward is a No. 2 Fantasy goalie when healthy, but you might want to start making plans just in case he is done for the year. Manny Legace and Justin Peters would be the goalies remaining if Ward ends up being shelved. (Updated 02/08/2010).

Waiver Wire: Jussi what we see?
Jussi Jokinen is quietly putting together a nice stretch, but it hasn't been enough to get him added to the Finnish Olympic team. As Michael Hurcomb writes, it shouldn't stop owners from scooping him up.

| Goalie Cam Ward was a steadying force for the Hurricanes down the stretch in 2008-09 after getting off to a slow start. As soon as Paul Maurice took over behind the bench, Ward flourished as the guy who was leaned on day to day, leading the Hurricanes back to the playoffs for the first time since 2005-06. He finished with a 39-23-5 record, 2.44 GAA, .916 save percentage and six shutouts. He won 13 of his final 17 regular-season appearances. Ward was losing some starts to Michael Leighton early in the season, but that wasn't the case once Maurice took over in mid-December. The Hurricanes stand behind Ward, who is heading into a contract year. His performance in 2009-10 could likely determine the amount of money he makes moving forward, so he'll have plenty of incentive to shine. Believe it or not, but Ward passes as a No. 1 Fantasy goalie in most formats. The Hurricanes TG is more of a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option. (Updated 8/24/09) |
