Niittymaki has now won six of his last seven starts and appears to have his hands securely on the No. 1 job in Tampa for the time being. He has better stats than Mike Smith and deserves to be getting the majority of the action. Feel free to use Niittymaki as a No. 2 option in deeper leagues. The Lightning TG should also get some consideration while the team is winning.

| Antero Niittymaki served as Martin Biron’s backup in Philadelphia for the majority of the past two seasons, having spent the first five years of his career with the Flyers. He was signed in the offseason by the Lightning which will use him as an insurance policy for starter Mike Smith who is coming back from post-concussion syndrome. Niittymaki was solid in net for the Flyers last season, getting 32 starts as Martin Biron struggled with inconsistencies and injuries in 2008-09. He compiled a 15-8-6 record with a .912 save percentage and 2.76 GAA. He’ll be one of the more desirable backup goalies to have on Draft Day considering Smith’s injury situation and Niittymaki’s solid track record over the past two seasons as Biron’s backup. He’ll be worth drafting as an insurance policy for Smith and low-end Fantasy flier. (Updated 8/18/09) |
