White takes Phaneuf's number, spot: All four players acquired by the Flames in Sunday's blockbuster trade with Toronto that sent defenseman Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and minor league defenseman Keith Aulie to the Maple Leafs were in Calgary's lineup on Monday against the Flyers. Matt Stajan moved onto the top line between Jarome Iginla and Dustin Boyd. Finnish left-winger Niklas Hagman joined countryman Olli Jokinen on a line with Jamie Lundmark. Jamal Mayers skated on the fourth line, and defenseman Ian White not only assumed Phaneuf's old jersey No. 3 but also paired with his former defense partner Robyn Regehr. Unfortunately, the Flames recorded 18 shots, their second-lowest total this season, and lost 3-0. (Updated 02/02/2010).

| Fantasy Analysis |
White failed to record a point in 21:43 of ice time, but clearly Calgary envisions him being a big part of its blue line. This stretch run will give Calgary time to evaluate White, who is set to become a restricted free agent. White has produced nine goals and 26 points in 56 games with Toronto. He has shown the last four seasons in Toronto he can be a very effective offensive blueliner. He is also now becoming a more complete scorer. We are not sure how much White's Fantasy value will improve, so he still remains a low-end flier until further notice. (Updated 02/02/2010).

| White started last season way down the defenseman depth chart in Toronto and was a healthy scratch for the first 11 games of the season before finally seeing the ice in November as a winger, thanks to injuries. White then put up seven points in eight games before moving back to the blue line where he stayed the rest of the year and make a very nice contribution. He ended the year averaging almost 23 minutes a game, but should see his ice time cut in 2009-10 as a result of the addition of Mike Komisarek and Francois Beauchemin. Only draft White in the deepest of Fantasy leagues this September. (Updated 8/18/09) |
