Bernier called out during slump: The Sports Xchange reports Canucks LW Steve Bernier has been dropped from the third to the fourth line several times in three of the past four games. He has also been called out by coach Alain Vigneault for not working hard enough during a slump that has seen the big winger not only struggle offensively with two points in 15 games but also stop bringing a physical element. Bernier has bounced around a few organizations after folks have realized he hasn't been able to live up to the hype as a first-round pick. Bernier's biggest thing has always been playing on a consistent basis. He still hasn't gotten the message in Vancouver and has marginal Fantasy appeal. (Updated 02/05/2010).

Week 19 Fantasy Hockey Planner
The trade winds are definitely kicking up as we approach the extended Olympic break. How might your key Fantasy contributors be impacted? Our Michael Hurcomb touches on that and much more in his weekly Planner.

| It seems hockey enthusiasts and NHL general managers are just going to have to accept the fact forward Steve Bernier might never find the scoring touch that made him a lethal skater as a junior hockey player and first-round pick in 2003. Bernier failed to break 20 goals or 20 assists for the fourth straight season in 2008-09, his first full campaign with the Canucks. Bernier had 15 goals for the second time in his career and a career-high 32 points for the second straight season. He did net a career-high 17 assists, but it was just one helper better than his previous two seasons. Bernier frustrated coach Alain Vigneault with his selective shot process like all the other NHL coaches before him. Still, he showed toughness by leading Vancouver with 146 hits and it was enough for Vancouver to bring him back with a two-year deal in the offseason. Bernier might always have sleeper potential until the day he retires, but is best considered a low-end Fantasy forward. (Updated 8/17/09) |
