Arbitrator gives Hudler new deal: An arbitrator has awarded Russia-bound forward Jiri Hudler a two-year deal worth $5.75 million if he ever returns to play for the Detroit Red Wings. Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Monday the deal gives the 25-year-old Hudler $2.75 million in the first season and $3 million in the second.

Hudler recently signed a two-year, $10 million deal with Dynamo Moscow of the Russian Kontinental Hockey League, where he will play next season. The agreement maintains Detroit's rights to Hudler should he return from Russia. Hudler had 23 goals and 34 assists for the Red Wings last season. Hudler is only worth stashing in the deepest of long-term Fantasy keeper leagues, if you can wait out his return to the NHL.

| Jiri Hudler really shocked the hockey world this offseason by turning down an offer from the Red Wings to sign a two-year, $10 million contract to play for Dynamo Moscow of the KHL (Russia). Detroit was really banking on Hudler re-signing after his career season in 2008-09. Hudler posted 23 goals, 34 assists and 57 points in 82 games -- all career highs. Hudler really took on the role of being a Tomas Holmstrom clone. He wasn't afraid to attack the net and clean up the garbage in front of the goalie for some easy scores. The Red Wings have retained the rights to Hudler, if he chooses to return to the NHL. But it's unlikely he will do so in 2009-10, so it's safe to ignore him on Draft Day. Hudler is only worth holding onto in the deepest of long-term keeper formats. (Updated 8/24/09) |
