Phaneuf scores with a little luck: Dion Phaneuf scored 2:50 into overtime to give the Flames a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday. Phaneuf whistled a shot off the shin guard of St. Louis winger T.J. Oshie and past goalie Chris Mason for his sixth goal. "It got tipped up high," Mason said. "He was shooting at the other side of the net and it went in the short side." Phaneuf said the goal was, "a classic example of traffic. Luckily, it went in." (Updated 11/06/2009).

| Fantasy Analysis |
Phaneuf had his first goal in five games on Thursday and he definitely made sure it counted. We have really been impressed with Phaneuf to start the 2009-10 season after he had his worst season as a pro in 2008-09. With a spot on the Canadian Olympic roster up for grabs, Phaneuf is playing with some added incentive. He remains a must-start Fantasy option. (Updated 11/06/2009).

| After posting a career-high 60 points in 2007-08, Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf skyrocketed up the Fantasy rankings. He ended up the No. 1 most drafted Fantasy defenseman in CBSSports.com leagues last season. Unfortunately, he didn't finish atop the rankings by season's end. Phaneuf had a largely disappointing season and ended up as the 18th best producer among Fantasy defensemen. The 24-year-old Edmonton native started well with two power-play goals and nine points in 10 October games, but it went quickly downhill after that. Phaneuf would total just three goals over his next 38 games and would struggle defensively as well, finishing with a career-worst minus-11 mark. Phaneuf did have a strong enough surge late in the season to finish with a fourth straight 40-point season. He still had career lows in goals (11), power-play scores (4) and points (47). Phaneuf did log 100 penalty minutes for a second straight season, as well as total 159 hits and 86 blocked shots. Perhaps the pressure got to Phaneuf last season. He gets a fresh start with Brent Sutter taking over as head coach. While Sutter relied a lot on his forwards to carry the offense in New Jersey, he surely will want to take advantage of Phaneuf's hard slap shot. Phaneuf still passes as no worse than a No. 2 Fantasy defenseman. (Updated 8/17/09) |
