Thrashers patient with Lehtonen: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Thrashers goalie Kari Lehtonen, who was recalled on Sunday from a conditioning stint in the AHL, practiced with the team on Monday. However, there is no timetable for Lehtonen, who has yet to play this season because of back problems, to see game action. "Kari is not going to go just yet," Thrashers coach John Anderson said. "We'll see what he looks like on a day-to-day basis. I don't want to set him up to fail. I want to make sure he's 100 percent ready to go in and make an impact for us. I don't know exactly what we are going to do. We might carry three [goaltenders]. We still have two or three weeks to decide." Johan Hedberg and Ondrej Pavelec are the other two goalies Anderson is talking about.

Lehtonen is headed out on the road with Atlanta for a three-game trip that begins Wednesday. He went 1-2-2 with a .899 save percentage and 2.67 goals-against average in four starts in Chicago (AHL). "The first couple of games over there were pretty tough," Lehtonen said after Monday's practice. "They got a lot better and I feel really good. We got what we needed from it. [Playing an NHL game] is going to be different, but I think I'm ready to take that next step." It will be interesting to see how the Thrashers use their goalies moving forward. Rumors have it that Lehtonen is expected to be traded before the March 3 deadline. But potential suitors might want to see him in a NHL game before making a move. Lehtonen has missed all season with a back injury. It's not time yet to activate Lehtonen in Fantasy, but keep tabs on his progress.

| Thrashers G Kari Lehtonen accepted a one-year qualifying offer to remain in Atlanta this offseason but that doesn’t mean he’ll remain there for the entirety of the 2009-10 season. The Thrashers are open to dealing the 25-year-old goalie who has failed to live up to the potential that made him the second overall pick in 2002. He had another down season in 2008-09, posting a 19-22-3 record in 46 games with a 3.06 GAA and .911 save percentage. Lehtonen has dealt with plenty of injuries during his career, playing 50 or fewer games in three of his first four full season with Atlanta. He is an immensely talented goalie but his injuries and inconsistent play have really hurt his Fantasy value. One positive thing going for Lehtonen is the addition of Pavel Kubina to the defense, a move expected to bolster the team’s blue line. He might not last the entire season in Atlanta, but Lehtonen should be taken as an injury-risk No. 2 Fantasy goalie Draft Day. The Thrashers TG is also a low-end Fantasy option. (Updated 8/24/09) |
