2009-10 Draft Prep: Forward tiers

| Johan Franzen became a wealthy man in 2008-09 when Detroit handed the Swedish forward an 11-year, $43 million contract extension. At $3.95 million a year, Detroit landed a steal for an elite goal scorer. Franzen finished second on Detroit with 34 scores in 2008-09, a season after having a breakout campaign with 27 goals. He trailed only Marian Hossa's 40 goals and tied him with eight game-winning scores. Franzen also had career highs in assists (25), points (59) and plus-minus (21). The 29-year-old forward seems to do his best work in crunch time. He has totaled 24 goals and 40 points in 35 games after March 1 the last two seasons and also has 41 points (25 goals) and a plus-21 rating in his last 39 playoff games. It seems Detroit is paying Franzen for his late-season heroics, but that's when it counts the most for both the Red Wings and Fantasy owners. Franzen is no worse than a No. 3 Fantasy forward Draft Day. (Updated 8/17/09) |
