Hats off to Ovechkin, again: Three goals from Alex Ovechkin. Two feet of snow on the ground. One big comeback against a detested rival, with punches and name-calling added for good measure. The biggest number of all: 14, the length of a winning streak topped by just two other teams in NHL history. What a Super Sunday it was for the Washington Capitals, who got a hat trick from their two-time reigning league MVP and made up a three-goal deficit to beat Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 in overtime. "Ovie was crazy. He was awesome. He took the team on his back and he carried us," said Eric Fehr, who scored Washington's other goal. "That's what we needed, and he was wonderful." Ovechkin's three-goal burst gave him a league-high 42, pulling away from Crosby after the Pittsburgh center had tied him at 39 by scoring a pair in the first period. The robust crowd that braved atrocious travel conditions went delirious and threw dozens of red hats on the ice when Ovechkin tied the game with 8:54 to play, completing a comeback from a 4-1 second-period deficit. Ovechkin has nine goals and seven assists during a seven-game point streak. He is on the stat sheet more than held off of it. Keep Ovie active in all Fantasy formats. (Updated 02/07/2010).

| There hasn't been a better player in the NHL the last two seasons than Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin, and he has the hardware to show it. Ovechkin took home a second straight Hart Trophy (NHL MVP) following the 2008-09 season. Ovechkin, who also won the Maurice Richard Trophy for the second year in a row for leading the league in goals (56), is the first player since Dominik Hasek in 1997-98 to win the Hart Trophy in consecutive seasons and the first non-goalie to do so since Wayne Gretzky won eight in a row from 1980-87. Ovechkin is the second-youngest player (23) and first Russian player to win multiple Hart Trophies. While he fell short of his career-high 65 goals (2007-08), Ovechkin still had a pretty special '08-09 season. He led the NHL in points per game (1.39), shots (528) and power-play points (46). His 110 points were only second to Evgeni Malkin's 113. Ovechkin also reached the 200-goal and 200-assist plateau last season. He joined an elite grouping with Gretzky and Mario Lemieux as the only players to record 200 goals and 200 assists in their first four NHL seasons. And Ovechkin's play isn't limited to the offensive end. He led Washington with 243 hits last season. Ovechkin is becoming the face of the NHL as well as Fantasy Hockey. He is expected to go first overall in most Fantasy drafts this season. (Updated 8/25/09) |
