Brown scores, fights on Thursday: Ducks RW Mike Brown scored a goal and finished at plus-1 on Thursday against the Stars. The Ducks went in front 2-1 at 2:15 of the second period when Brown's shot from the right circle got through Marty Turco's pads. He also got into a fight with Brian Sutherby in the first period.

Brown has two goals in his last six games and four on the season, but still he has more fights -- seven. Brown has scored some timely goals in his career, but he is mostly on the ice for his enforcer skills. Consider him a nice flier in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM when healthy.

| The Ducks made a series of minor moves in 2008-09 to add some grit to their lineup, and while it might have looked insignificant on paper it was very instrumental in helping them get to the Western Conference semifinals. The first was trading for defenseman Sheldon Brookbank and followed shortly afterward by adding tough guy Mike Brown in a trade with the Canucks. Brown would appear in 28 games with the Ducks, recording two goals and one assist. However, he added a huge veteran presence on the checking line and helped take some pressure off enforcer George Parros. Brown got in his fair share of fights down the stretch and led Anaheim with 145 penalty minutes (totaling 60 with the Ducks). In his second NHL season, he set career highs in goals (2), assists (2), points (4), game-winning goals (2), penalty minutes, major penalties (19), game misconducts (2) and minor penalties (15). Anaheim opted to bring back Brown with a two-year contract in the offseason, so consider him a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM and short-handed stats. (Updated 8/17/09) |
