Callahan nets power-play score: Rangers LW Ryan Callahan scored a goal and tallied an assist during Thursday's game against the Capitals. Callahan tipped in a shot by Olli Jokinen, snapping New York's 0 for 25 power-play slump over seven games. It was his 14th goal and second in five games. (Updated 02/05/2010).

| Fantasy Analysis |
Callahan might have scored twice in his last five games, but he had just one point in his previous seven games before breaking out Thursday. It's a real shame too since Callahan started to show some life in December before slumping again in January. It has a lot to do with New York's inconsistency as a team. Callahan is a low-end Fantasy start since he is not a reliable goal scorer. (Updated 02/05/2010).

| Out of all the Rangers players that benefited from the late-season coaching change in 2008-09, it was Ryan Callahan who endured the biggest growth spurt. Callahan quickly became a favorite of coach John Tortorella after he took over for Tom Renneny in late February, and the Rangers new head man rewarded Callahan's hard work by putting him in favorable offensive situations. Callahan had nine goals and 17 points in his last 18 games for the best offensive run of his young career. Callahan had career highs across the board in goals (22), assists (18), points (40) and power-play goals (2). He also led New York with 265 hits. Callahan won the Steven McDonald Award, voted by the fans as the player who performs "above and beyond the call of duty." New York then had to bring back the free agent in the offseason, and it will be interesting to see how he performs with a full year of coaching from Tortorella. Callahan is still a low-end Fantasy flier Draft Day, but there is some sleeper potential here. He is also a flier in leagues that reward heavily for hits. (Updated 8/19/09) |
