Bieksa still not close to playing: The Sports Xchange reports Canucks D Kevin Bieksa is still a long way from returning after an opponent's skate severed tendons in his ankle on Dec. 29, but the veteran defenseman has rejoined the team after a couple of weeks back in Ontario with family. He is optimistic he'll be back sooner than the post-surgery forecast of 2-3 months. Bieksa has experience with this type of injury, having missed 47 games two seasons ago after his Achilles' tendon was cut by a skate. "It's a totally different tendon, it's going to heal differently," Bieksa said in his first media session since the injury. "I don't think we can really compare the two with recovery. I know I can't because the last time I was in a hard cast for seven weeks and couldn't walk at all, this time I'm walking three or four days after surgery. We're hoping that means it's quicker but right now we're going to have to see." (Updated 01/24/2010).

When Bieksa does return, there's a good chance he'll be wearing some type of Kevlar sock under the new Reebok team socks, which are proving too easy to cut through than the old wool socks. "I've been approached by just about everyone with an invention or looking to get a patent," he said. Even before the injury, Bieksa was having a down season with one goal and 16 points in 40 games. We know he has the ability to be a high-end Fantasy option when healthy, so Bieksa still could be a viable option down the stretch once he is active. (Updated 01/24/2010).

| The Canucks were more than happy to see defenseman Kevin Bieksa at 100 percent in 2008-09 after his 2007-08 season was shortened by a calf injury. Bieksa returned to his solid two-way play and became a top-logging defender for the Canucks once again. Bieksa set new career highs with 32 assists (tied for 24th among NHL defensemen) and 43 points (tied for 21st). He also tied for 19th among NHL defensemen with 11 goals. Bieksa also got the job done on the defensive end, as he was second on Vancouver with 119 hits and eighth with 60 blocked shots. Bieksa has totaled 40-plus points in two of his last three seasons and has 90-plus penalty minutes in three straight years. As long as he is healthy, Bieksa is going to help most Fantasy owners. He is no worse than a No. 2 Fantasy defenseman in standard formats. (Updated 8/17/09) |
