Blue Jackets' MacKenzie's Contract Pending Physical
News:Derek MacKenzie (concussion) re-signed with the Blue Jackets on Saturday, and his contract will be official once he passes a physical, the Columbus Dispatch's Aaron Portzline reports.
Analysis:Derek MacKenzie missed the last 16 games of the year after suffering a concussion, but it sounds like he is recovering well. Terms of the contract are not yet available. He had 14 points last season and 23 in 2010-11.
News:Chris Bourque was acquired by the Bruins in exchange for Zach Hamill on Saturday, the Globe and Mail's James Mirtle reports.
Analysis:Chris Bourque lit up the AHL during the 2011-12 season with 93 points in 73 games. He should be ready for the NHL this year, but is not a guarantee to make the Bruins' roster. He doesn't have Zach Hamill's upside, but does have a better track record in the AHL.
News:Zach Hamill was acquired by the Capitals on Saturday in exchange for Chris Bourque, the Globe and Mail's James Mirtle reports.
Analysis:Zach Hamill was the eighth overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft, but has not lived up to expectations so far. He scored 43 points (nine goals, 34 assists) in 68 games at the AHL level last season and had one assist in three NHL games with the Bruins. Hamill should compete for a roster spot with the Caps, but could also be headed back to the AHL for further seasoning.
Kings' Gagne Back At Practice But Return Uncertain
News:Simon Gagne (concussion) was back at practice and a return to the Kings hasn't been ruled out, the Mercury News reports.
Analysis: "Well, we're still playing, so he got an opportunity to practice with us," said coach Darryl Sutter. "You need lots of live ammo. Somebody asked (about Simon Gagne's availability) a week or so ago, and there was no chance then, because he hadn't even skated with the team. All you do is improve your (chances). You go from zero to whatever." Gagne would seem like an unlikely insertion into the lineup given the Kings' run so far this postseason, but he could work his way back into the lineup if the Kings fall behind in the series or one of the regulars sustains an injury.
No Trade Demands From Canucks' Luongo; Still Probably On Move
News: Canucks general manager Mike Gillis reiterated Friday that Roberto Luongo has not asked for a trade, the Vancouver Sun reports.
Analysis: Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault said Roberto Luongo had asked for a trade during an interview Thursday night, but Gillis was quick to deny those claims. Gillis did admit that Luongo is open to a trade and the team would try to move him this summer, so it's all semantics at this point. Expect Luongo to be wearing a new sweater come the fall.
News:Ilya Kovalchuk had five points in the final three games of the Eastern Conference finals, registering a goal in Game 6; he now leads the NHL in playoff scoring.
Analysis:Ilya Kovalchuk snagged four assists over the last three games as well, as he helped guide the Devils to the Stanley Cup Finals. He's been arguably one of the best players in the NHL this postseason and in a position of consideration for the Conn Smythe Trophy. Expect him to be active against the Kings during the Stanley Cup Finals.
News:Stephen Gionta had a goal and two assists in the last two games of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Analysis:Stephen Gionta and his linemates, Steve Bernier and Ryan Carter, gave the Rangers fits in the final two games of the series, posting the opening goal in Games 5 and 6 as well as the winning goal in Game 5. Look for this trio to see close to 10 minutes of ice time per game in the Finals.
News:Martin Brodeur stopped 33 of 35 shots Friday night to help lead the Devils to a 3-2 overtime win over the Rangers and a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Analysis: The 40-year-old netminder has been reborn in these playoffs and looks as good as he's ever been. In 18 playoff games this year, Martin Brodeur has a 12-5 record with a 2.04 GAA and a .923 SV% including one shutout.
News:Adam Henrique scored the game-winning goal at the 1:03 mark of overtime as the Devils downed the Rangers 3-2 on Friday to take the Eastern Conference Finals, four games to two.
Analysis: The rookie center has had a solid playoff run so far with three goals and eight assists in 18 games. Henrqiue and the Devils will square off against the Kings in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Wednesday night. Two of Adam Henrique's three goals in the playoffs are overtime winners.
News:Hal Gill had a plate screwed onto his fractured tibia two weeks ago, the Montreal Gazette's Dave Stubbs reports.
Analysis:Hal Gill was on crutches earlier in the week. Gill is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and he is expected to be back to full health at some point during the summer.
News:Travis Zajac went to the locker room in the second period Friday after getting slashed in the arm, NHL.com's Dan Rosen reports.
Analysis:Travis Zajac was slashed by Brandon Prust near his wrist, and left the ice to get it looked at. Zajac is back on the bench, and it looks like he will return to the game.
News:Steve Eminger is expected to play in Friday's Game 6 against the Devils, Steve Zipay of the New York Newsday reports.
Analysis: Nothing has been made official, but Steve Eminger reportedly left Friday morning's skate much earlier than Stu Bickel. It looks like this change may be the only one to the Rangers' lines Friday.
News:James Reimer (upper body) will likely face increased competition from prospect Ben Scrivens during training camp in the fall, according to a report on Sportsnet 590 The FAN.
Analysis: Scrivens has been playing out of his mind in the Calder Cup playoffs and has his team within a win of the finals. Leafs' assistant general manager Dave Nonis was on the station Friday and admitted the two goalies would likely compete for one spot next fall. The Leafs have expressed a desire to upgrade their netminding, so this likely means James Reimer and Scrivens will be competing for the role of backup. Keeper leaguers need to file this away now and perhaps make adjustments, at least for the short term.
News:Ben Scrivens' postseason work in the AHL playoffs has impressed Leafs' executives to the point where the young man could battle James Reimer for the backup job next season, according to Sportsnet590 The FAN.
Analysis: Assistant general manager Dave Nonis was on the station Friday morning and he said Ben Scrivens has "performed at a higher level than we anticipated at this point in his career." Nonis then admitted that James Reimer and Scrivens would likely compete for a single spot on the roster next season. Scrivens' stock is clearly on the rise; keeper leaguers take note. He's now one game from the Calder Cup championship and sports a 10-2 record with three shutouts, 1.66 GAA and .942 save percentage.
News:Jakub Culek signed an entry-level contract with the Senators on Friday, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: The 19-year-old, who was the team's third-round choice in the 2010 entry draft, put up 40 points (13G, 27A) in 55 Canadian Hockey League games this year. That brought Jakub Culek to a total of 109 points (33G, 76A) in his 173 career games at that level, and he'll look to make a successful transition to the AHL.
News:Mikkel Boedker had his best season in the last three years for the Coyotes, tallying 24 points in eight games to go along with a minus-2 rating and 108 hits.
Analysis:Mikkel Boedker's hit total flies off the chart, as his previous high was 42 in 34 games in 2010. The real reason for optimism as far as Boedker is concerned, however, is his impressive postseason offense, tallying eight points in Phoenix's 16 playoff games. He's a potential sleeper to keep an eye on heading into next season.
News:Ray Whitney suffered from back problems throughout the postseason, Craig Morgan of FOX Arizona reports.
Analysis:Ray Whitney's injury explains his limited production in the postseason. The only time the team's prime line of Whitney-Radim Vrbata-Martin Hanzal ever got going was in Game 5 against the Kings. An unrestricted free agent this offseason, Whitney's return to the desert is, at this point, a question mark.
News:Shane Doan revealed Thursday that he had fought a hip injury throughout much of the postseason, Craig Morgan of FOX Arizona reports.
Analysis:Shane Doan was still tremendous for the Coyotes as he led the team to the deepest postseason run in franchise history. An unrestricted free agent this offseason, Doan will likely be a top priority for general manager Don Maloney.
News:Michal Rozsival, who took what some thought to be a cheap shot from LA's Dustin Brown just minutes prior to the Kings' game-winning goal Tuesday, did not suffer any structural damage in his knee, Craig Morgan of FOX Arizona reports.
Analysis:Michal Rozsival has a knee/thigh bruise, but the injury does not put him at any risk for training camp and next season, though he will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
News:Martin Hanzal revealed that he played through the postseason with a rib injury, Craig Morgan of FOX Arizona reports.
Analysis: According to GM Don Maloney, Martin Hanzal may also need to undergo offseason surgery, but he did not reveal where or why.
News: Bissonette skated in 31 games for the Coyotes in the 2011-12 season, finishing with one goal and a minus-4 rating.
Analysis: Biz, a fan favorite on Twitter, is the Coyotes' enforcer, as he collected 41 PIMs in his 31 games. He's not someone to look to for anything productive for fantasy purposes, but he'll be back for a similar role next season.
News:Adrian Aucoin revealed that he had been playing during the postseason with a groin injury, Craig Morgan of FOX Arizona reports.
Analysis:Adrian Aucoin had his quietest year offensively in the last three seasons, with nine points in 64 games (he had 22 points in 75 games in 2010 and 28 in 82 games in 2009). As a free agent this offseason, it would be a surprise to see Aucoin back in the desert, especially given the pool of young blue line talent the Coyotes have stockpiled.
Rangers' Zuccarrello Ready And Available For Game 6
News:Mats Zuccarello (wrist) will be available, if needed, for Friday's Game 6 action against the Devils and was even ready for Game 5, as well, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: Zuccarrello hasn't played since breaking his wrist March 23rd, so it would be a surprise to see the Rangers turn to the diminutive forward as they attempt to stave off elimination in Game 6 Friday. Nevertheless, Zuccarrello's recovery is good news for the Blueshirts' depth if they can salvage the series and move on to the Stanley Cup Finals.
Rangers' Dubinsky Feeling Good After Game 5 Return
News:Brandon Dubinsky (leg) "felt good" in his return to the lineup during Wednesday's 3-2 Game 5 loss to New Jersey, Denis Gorman of FOX Sports reports.
Analysis:Brandon Dubinsky skated 15:38 and tallied an assist in his first action since Game 7 against Ottawa in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Dubinsky provided a spark to the Rangers' second line, alongside Artem Anisimov and Ryan Callahan, and the fact that he's feeling healthy is good news for the Blueshirts as they attempt to extend the series with a Game 6 win in New Jersey Friday.
News:Ryan Russell has signed a one-year, two-way NHL-AHL contract with the Blue Jackets, Colombus' official website reports.
Analysis:Ryan Russell has spent the majority of his career in the AHL, playing 274 games and collecting 60 goals and 55 assists. He tallied two goals in 41 games with the Blue Jackets this season.
News: Canucks coach Alain Vigneault, who just signed a two-year extension with the team, said Cory Schneider's promotion from backup to No. 1 goaltender will "probably be permanent," the Vancouver Sun reports.
Analysis:Cory Schneider started the final three games of the Canucks' first-round loss to the Kings. Vancouver is expected to trade Roberto Luongo this offseason, but it sounds like Schneider could be the No. 1 netminder even if Bobby Lu sticks around.
News:Henrik Lundqvist allowed four goals on only 16 shots Wednesday night as the Rangers fell to the Devils, 5-3, in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Analysis: He's given up seven goals over his last two games after surrendering only eight in the six games previous. Henrik Lundqvist will need to pick up the pace in Game 6 if he hopes to extend New York's playoff run.
Rangers' Gaborik Scores In Loss To Devils Wednesday
News:Marian Gaborik tied the game at three goals apiece only 17 seconds into the third period Wednesday night, but the Devils scored the next two goals to take a 5-3 win in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Analysis: It was Marian Gaborik's first point of the Eastern Conference Finals as he entered Wednesday's game pointless in four straight games. He'll need to be much better in Game 6 if the Rangers hope to extend the series to seven games.
News:Ryan Carter scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal at the 15:36 mark of the third period as the Devils downed the Rangers, 5-3, in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Analysis: He now has three goals and two assists through 16 playoff games, including two game winners.
Devils' Parise Scores Empty Netter In Win Wednesday
News:Zach Parise picked up his seventh goal of the playoffs Wednesday night by scoring into an empty net to cap a 5-3 victory over the Rangers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Analysis: The Devils' captain also added an assist and now has seven goals and seven assists through 17 playoff games, including five points (3G, 2A) in his last two games.
News: Sabres' GM Darcy Regier expects Derek Roy to return next season, reports The Buffalo News. Roy is entering the final year of a six-year contract signed in the summer of 2007.
Analysis:Derek Roy struggled to just 44 points in 80 games and was the subject of trade rumours for much of the 2011-12 season. A return to previous levels isn't out of the question, but ice time down the middle will be harder to come by with the late-season emergence of Tyler Ennis and the club's acquisition of Cody Hodgson.
News:Derek Dorsett agreed to a three-year contract with Columbus, the Columbus Dispatch's Aaron Portzline reports.
Analysis:Derek Dorsett was set to become a restricted free agent at the beginning of July. He had a career-high 20 points last season in 77 games.
Bolts' Prospect Tokarski: Hot Hand In AHL Playoffs
News:Dustin Tokarski's hot hand has helped carry the Norfolk Admirals to the AHL Eastern Conference championship and a chance to win the Calder Cup Championship.
Analysis: He had two shutouts in the final two games of the AHL Eastern Conference finals and stopped 113-of-115 shots he face in the four-game series. The team set a league record by allowing just two goals while outscoring their opponent, the St. John's IceCaps, 14-2 in four games. Dustin Tokarski has always carried a reputation as a big-money goalie (despite his smallish stature) and he's proving it again. His future continues to brighten.
News:Ryan Shannon (rotator cuff) has signed a three-year deal to play for the ZSC Lions in the Swiss league next season, reports the Tampa Bay Times.
Analysis: He had a disappointing year with the Bolts, scoring just four goals, adding eight assists and finishing minus-11 in 45 games. The deal with the Lions affords him an opportunity to continue to play pro hockey; he won't be back in the NHL.
News:Jonathan Quick made 38 saves in a 4-3 overtime win in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals to send the Kings to the Stanley Cup Finals.
Analysis:Jonathan Quick and the Kings are an unbelievable 8-0 on the road in the playoffs and are headed to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1993.
News:Mike Murphy announced via Twitter on Tuesday that he will leave the Hurricanes organization to play in the KHL for the upcoming season, Raleigh-Durham's News & Observer reports.
Analysis: After playing in just two games for Carolina this season, Mike Murphy will try his hand in Russia for 2012-2013. Though his chances of ever donning a 'Canes sweater again are slim, Carolina will retain the restricted free agent's NHL rights during his stint overseas.
Sabres' Szczechura Agrees To Play In Czech Republic
News:Paul Szczechura has signed to play in the Czech Republic, according to The Buffalo News.
Analysis: The 26-year-old had a bit of success in some brief time with the Sabres last season, but this is an organization with a lot of good prospects and as the season wore on others stepped ahead of him when call-ups were needed. Given Paul Szczechura's success at the AHL level - 21 goals in 57 games last season - we wouldn't be surprised to see him do well overseas and this may not be the last we've heard from him.
News:Michael Del Zotto struggled in the opening period of Game 4 against the Devils on Monday, to only play 4:11 in the second and third period, Arthur Staple of the Newsday Isles reports.
Analysis:Michael Del Zotto entered Game 4 ranked second in points among NHL defensemen. After missing hits, shots and making bad passes, Del Zotto sat the majority of the rest of the game. This drop in production may be due to news of the young defenseman's grandmother passing away after Game 3, Saturday. All things considered, he did manage to still contribute an assist late in the third.
News:Nazem Kadri left Sunday's AHL playoff game with an undisclosed injury and did not return, reports the Toronto Sun.
Analysis: In-game broadcasters indicated it was an upper-body injury, but that has not been confirmed. He's tied for second in team scoring this postseason with 10 points (three goals and seven assists) in 11 games. No word on the severity.
News:Jacob Josefson played 12:58 in Monday's Game 4 victory over the Rangers in Monday's Eastern Conference Finals, his first game since April 3 after suffering a broken wrist.
Analysis:Jacob Josefson is a versatile forward that is expected to shut down the opposition but can also chip in offensively when needed. The game was his first since injuring his wrist late in the regular season in a game against the Islanders.
News:Bryce Salvador registered a goal and an assist in Monday's 4-1 victory over the Rangers in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, giving him four points in the last two games.
Analysis:Bryce Salvador has assisted on four of the Devils' seven goals in the conference finals and has suddenly exploded with three goals this postseason after not having one during the regular season.
News:Nicolas Blanchard agreed to a two-year contract with the Hurricanes on Monday, according to the team's official site.
Analysis: The 24-year-old forward, who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2005 draft by the Hurricanes, has recorded 106 points and 579 penalty minutes in 342 career AHL games, but has yet to make his NHL debut. If/when that happens, PIMs would be the only category he'd likely contribute in.
News:Bobby Sanguinetti was signed to a one-year contract by the Hurricanes on Monday, according to the team's official site.
Analysis:Bobby Sanguinetti was drafted 21st overall in the 2006 draft by the Rangers. He tallied 50 points for the Charlotte Checkers last season, which was good for third in the AHL among defenseman. Sanguinetti also made his NHL debut last March, appearing in three games for the Canes without recording a point.
News:Marco Scandella had surgery for a hernia and for a hand injury, but should be recovered by June, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: He played a full season with both ailments, so both surgeries are likely minor.
News:Alexander Sulzer was re-signed by the Sabres to a one-year, $725,000 deal on Monday, WGR 550 Sports Radio reports.
Analysis:Alexander Sulzer only scored nine points on the season, which didn't exactly create many ripples in the fantasy community. Still, he helped to stabilize the Buffalo blue line after being acquired before the trade deadline and could be ticketed for a bigger role next season.
News:Jamie McBain was re-signed to a two-year, $1.8 million contract with the Hurricanes on Monday, the Toronto Globe and Mail reports.
Analysis:Jamie McBain was Carolina's highest scoring defender last season and seems to have a bright future ahead of him. The contract is cap-friendly for the Hurricanes to boot, creating some financial flexibility for Carolina.
News:Steven Stamkos (shoulder) says his rehabilitation is going well and he expects to start his summer workout program this week, reports the Tampa Times.
Analysis: "It feels good," Steven Stamkos said of the irritated bursa sac with which he played the last month of the season. He did not play with Team Canada at the World Championships this month to get the rest he needed to keep his training regimen on track for next season.
News:Brandon Prust has been suspended for one game by the NHL for his elbow to the head of Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov during New York's win in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the Associated Press reports.
Analysis:Brandon Prust isn't a huge scorer, but he does a lot of grunt work on the bottom two lines and lineup consistency has helped the Rangers get pretty far this season. Perhaps Monday would be the perfect time for Brandon Dubinsky to return from a foot injury.
News:Antoine Vermette chipped in with an assist and had a would-be goal fly off the crossbar during Sunday's 2-0 win over Los Angeles.
Analysis:Antoine Vermette has been an underrated piece of the Coyotes offense throughout the postseason, and his work on faceoffs (12-of-18) set up Shane Doan's second goal of the game.
News:Mike Smith was as solid as he has been throughout the playoffs and season as a whole, making 36 saves en route to a 2-0 season-saving win over the Kings on Sunday.
Analysis:Mike Smith pitched his third shutout of the postseason and continues to provide the Coyotes with excellent netminding. As long as he's in net, the Coyotes aren't out of it -- the question is, and has been throughout the season, whether he'll get the goal support he needs to post the W.
News:Nicklas Grossmann (knee) will not undergo offseason surgery on his sore knee, Philly.com reports.
Analysis:Nicklas Grossmann battled the injury in the later stages of the season, but will only need rest and relaxation in the offseason to recover.
Volchenkov Practices After Taking Questionable Hit in Game 3
News:Anton Volchenkov practiced on Sunday after taking an elbow from New York's Brandon Prust in Game 3, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: It's unclear as to whether or not Anton Volchenkov will play in Game 4, but the fact that he was at practice is a good sign. The bigger story here is whether or not Prust will be punished by the NHL for the hit.
News:Peter Harrold will play in Monday's Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the third-consecutive game in which he's been in the lineup, the Newark Star-Ledger's Rich Chere reports.
Analysis:Peter Harrold was inserted into the lineup for Wednesday's Game 2 and likely will remain in the lineup. He gives the Devils a strong-skating defenseman that can make outlet passes, but likely won't contribute much offensively. He does see time with the team's second power-play unit.
News:Adam Larsson will be a scratch again for the third consecutive game for Monday's Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the Newark Star-Ledger's Rich Chere reports.
Analysis:Adam Larsson had a rough outing in the Game 1 loss to the Rangers and has been replaced in the lineup by Peter Harrold. Larsson played solidly after entering the lineup in the second round victory over Philadelphia, but likely will not be back in the lineup unless there is an injury.
News:Dainius Zubrus will skate on New Jersey's first line with Travis Zajac and Zach Parise in Monday's Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the Newark Star-Ledger's Rich Chere reports.
Analysis:Dainius Zubrus has been a versatile player during his career with the Devils and has skated with Zajac and Parise before. However, Zubrus isn't always the most productive player even when surrounded by talented linemates. Look for Zubrus to do the dirty work in the corners and in front of the net as well as being active on the forecheck along with Parise.
News:Petr Sykora will be a healthy scratch for Monday's Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the Newark Star-Ledger's Rich Chere reports.
Analysis:Petr Sykora has been largely ineffective in three games against the Rangers with no points and three shots on goal. The veteran will sit out Game 4 in favor of Jacob Josefson.
News:Dan Girardi's power-play tally in the third period propelled the Rangers over the Devils in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final on Saturday afternoon.
Analysis: Perhaps there's a trend here; the Rangers have won twice in this series, and Dan Girardi has banged home the game-winner both times. His three postseason game-winners this year are one more than he accumulated during the entire regular season, so don't expect lots more.
S. Kostitsyn: Preds' Management Too Tough On Radulov, Brother
News:Sergei Kostitsyn, who is a free agent this summer, told a Belarus news outlet this week that Nashville management was too tough on teammates Alexander Radulov and his brother Andrei for breaking curfew during the playoffs, reports the Toronto Sun.
Analysis: You had to expect he'd take his brother's side, but players need to realize you can't say something to a news outlet in your home country and not expect it to spread like a wild fire. Expect young Sergei to be playing elsewhere, maybe even the KHL with his brother and buddy, Radulov, next season.
News:James van Riemsdyk will undergo surgery next week to repair a torn labrum in his right hip, reports the Associated Press.
Analysis: His recovery time is expected to be six weeks. Injuries limited him to just 43 games during the regular season because of three separate injuries -- groin, concussion and foot surgery -- and he heard his name tossed around in trade rumors. He's a beast when healthy. But despite his tender years (23), he's quickly gaining a reputation for being injury prone. He may ultimately be nothing more than just another Ryan Malone -- typically better on the ice than in fantasy, and guaranteed to miss 15-20 games (or thereabouts) every year.
News:Kimmo Timonen will undergo surgery next week to remove a disc fragment from his lower back, reports the Associated Press. A full recovery is expected.
Analysis: His recovery time is eight to 10 weeks, putting him out of commission until perhaps the beginning of August. Invariably, his offseason training will be impacted and he may not be up to speed come camp.
Philly's Carle Has Surgery For Torn Stomach Muscle
News:Matt Carle required offseason surgery to repair a torn stomach muscle, reports the Associated Press. His recovery time is four to six weeks.
Analysis: He was steady in the postseason, leading the Flyers blue line with two goals and four assists in 11 games. He is coming off his third consecutive season with at least 35 points, and should be able to deliver that with consistency going forward.
News:Wayne Simmonds required surgery to repair a broken left index finger after the Flyers were eliminated from the playoffs, reports the Associated Press.
Analysis: He still managed a goal and five assists in 11 playoff games, and showed his value as a tough, two-way player. His recovery time is four to six weeks.
News:Claude Giroux has had double wrist surgery and will need six weeks of recovery before he can resume activities, reports the Associated Press.
Analysis: His right wrist needed repair for torn cartilage; his left required the removal of bone spurs. He still managed to deliver 17 points in 10 postseason contests, a tally good enough to still stand Saturday as the league's best thus far. No worries for next season; he'll be as good as new.
News:Ryan Callahan's hustle after a loose puck gave New York an insurmountable 3-0 lead late in the third frame of the Rangers' Game 3 win at New Jersey on Saturday afternoon.
Analysis: With New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur on the bench for a sixth attacker, Ryan Callahan tracked down an off-target pot shot by Bryan Boyle and tapped it home from short range before the Devils could regroup. He added an assist in the contest to bring his postseason mark to 4-4-8 in 17 games.
News: The Blue Jackets have elected not to sign Petr Straka to an entry-level contract, and he'll return to the draft-eligible pool.
Analysis: This is a very odd decision by a team that should be beating every bush to add talent to its depth chart. The 2010 second-round pick has seen his development stall the last couple of seasons in part due to injuries, but Petr Straka still managed a point-a-game pace in this year's QMJHL playoffs and would appear to have some upside yet.
News:Ryan Kesler, who underwent surgery May 8 to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder, will be out at least six full months and will not return early, reports the Vancouver Province.
Analysis: It appears Ryan Kesler learned a lesson from pushing up his return from surgery last fall. His production plummeted this season from 41 to 22 goals after he returned Oct. 18 from July 25 hip surgery. "I'm not going to come back early," Kesler said this week. "It's going to take six months and the surgeon [Dr. Anthony Miniaci of the Cleveland Clinic] is not going to release me until I'm at full strength and mobility ... even if it goes until December, I'm not coming back until I'm 110 per cent when I know I'm ready and able to play my game." Adjust your draft expectations and keeper decisions accordingly.
Devils' Tallinder Likely "Available" Before Series' End
News:Henrik Tallinder (leg) is likely to be available before the Eastern Conference Finals series' against the Rangers wraps up, Devils coach Pete DeBoer tells the Bergen County Record.
Analysis:Henrik Tallinder has remained out since Jan. 17 with a blood clot in his lower leg. Tallinder resumed skating last week and was cleared to take part in full practices on Wednesday.
News:Milan Hejduk signed a one-year deal with the Avalanche on Friday, James Mirtle of the Globe & Mail reports.
Analysis: The 36-year-old was contemplating retirement at the end of March, but he's decided to return next year for another campaign. Milan Hejduk recorded a career-low 37 points (14G, 23A) this year despite missing only one game. He finished with a minus-12 ratio, but the team clearly felt the veteran winger was worth bringing back. Hejduk has spent his entire 12-year NHL career with the Avalanche.
News:Marc-Antoine Pouliot will step in for the suspended Martin Hanzal when the Coyotes take on the Kings on Thursday, Sarah McLellan reports.
Analysis: Coach Dave Tippett won't confirm where Marc-Antoine Pouliot will play yet, but the Coyotes are desperate for some offensive shake-ups so this may not be a bad thing.
News:Marc Staal netted his third goal of the playoffs Wednesday night in a 3-2 loss to the Devils.
Analysis: He's been one of New York's best defenders in these playoffs and Wednesday's game was a microcosm of his play. Marc Staal led all Rangers in icetime, playing over 27 minutes and finishing with a plus-1 rating, three shots on net, and two blocked shots.
News:David Clarkson scored what turned out to be the game winner early in the third period and the Devils held on to beat the Rangers 3-2 in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Wednesday.
Analysis: He's having a strong playoff run, with three goals, six assists and a plus-minus rating of plus-6 through 14 games. Wednesday's game winner was David Clarkson's third of the playoffs.
News:Colten Teubert will not be available for the AHL Western Conference finals following facial reconstruction surgery, reports the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: He was hit in the face with a puck in the first round, but may return if Oklahoma City advances to the Calder Cup final. He hit the ice Tuesday for the first time since the injury.
News:Jerry D'Amigo is tied for the AHL postseason goal-scoring race with six goals.
Analysis: He has nine points total to lead the Marlies and is a playoff-leading plus-10. He's skating with Nazim Kadri and Matt Frattin, and the trio sit one-two-three in team scoring. He could battle for a lower-line role with the Leafs next year.
News:Joe Colborne has missed several games in the AHL playoffs with a finger injury and may not be ready to start the Western Conference finals on Thursday, reports Sportsnet.ca.
Analysis: He tried to play through it, but it's a bad cut and it just kept re-opening during the team's last series so they shut him down to avoid an infection. Marlies' coach Dallas Eakins is not certain when Joe Colborne will return: "We'll just have to see how it goes day to day," he said. Thankfully, it does not sound like it'll have long-term implications.
News:Riku Helenius may be back on Tampa's radar screen after leading his team to the Finnish Elite League championship, reports the Tampa Tribune.
Analysis: Don't hold your breath -- this guy's once-glossy prospect status is long gone. But goalies do develop on a longer, slower curve than other players. And General Manager Steve Yzerman has already reached out to the goalie to see if he'll return to North America.
News:Mattias Ohlund (knee) would like to play again, but knows a return will be a difficult task, reports Tampa Bay Times. He underwent major surgery to resurface the femur behind the kneecap in his left knee joint.
Analysis: He's hard into rehab, some 11 weeks since the surgery which, to the layperson, would most easily be described as a partial knee replacement -- a layer of titanium was applied to the head of the femur. "I have to [do the rehab], for my own peace of mind, give myself a chance to do this," Mattias Ohlund said. "I'd like to play again. I don't know if it's going to happen, but I hope so." His return will be a daunting task and there's no guarantee that he will even be skating again by September. Right now, he is doing light weight training, stretching, swimming and riding a stationary bike. Hockey is hard on the knees; we've never heard of anyone coming back from a partial replacement to play pro hockey.
Kings' Fraser (Personal Reasons) Unexpected To Play In Game 3
News:Colin Fraser (personal reasons) is unlikely to play in Thursday's Game 3, L.A. Kings Insider reports.
Analysis:Colin Fraser remains in Alberta with his family according to coach Darryl Sutter, making it unlikely that he'll be available Thursday.
News:Kari Lehtonen hurt his meniscus at the World Championships, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis:Kari Lehtonen appears to have avoided a serious injury, as Stars' GM Joe Nieuwendyk said the meniscus would only keep him out for about two weeks if it were the NHL regular season. Lehtonen plans on staying in his native Finland for a little bit, but will fly back to Dallas at some point to have the knee looked at. Barring further complications, this should not have any effect on his 2012-13 season.
News:Rob Flick signed a three-year deal with the Blackhawks on Monday, the Blackhawks official Twitter feed reports.
Analysis:Rob Flick recorded 13 points (seven goals, six assists) in 45 regular season games with the AHL Rockford IceHogs and looks to be like the next dynamic center produced from the Hawks' farm system.
News:Jeff Carter picked up a hat trick in the Kings' 4-0 win in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals on Tuesday.
Analysis:Jeff Carter's struggled at times this postseason as he came into play Tuesday with just four points in ten playoff games but the Kings now have a chance to put a stranglehold on the series as it heads back to Los Angeles.
News:Alexander Semin is an unrestricted free agent this offseason and has expressed displeasure with his role with the Caps.
Analysis:Alexander Semin's agent was quick to not close the door on the Caps but he questioned the significance of Semin's role with the Caps in 2011-2012. Alex was often left on the bench in high pressure situations and the 28-year old appears to want to find a team that values his skills more.
News:Tomas Vokoun is an unrestricted free agent this offseason and multiple reports indicate his time in Washington was unhappy and will be short lived.
Analysis:Tomas Vokoun had a rough 2011-2012 season, plagued by injury and inconsistent performance. Teammates have since questioned his accountability and attitude, with Vokoun often raising his hands after goals, attempting to deflect blame on his defense. The Caps surely allowed a lot of shots on goal throughout the year but seemed to rally around the rookie Holtby who is likely to carry the mantel into the 2012-2013 season.
News:Michal Neuvirth sat out the last portion of the Caps season with a hip flexor injury, according to word out of Caps' camp.
Analysis:Michal Neuvirth backed up Tomas Vokoun but ended up missing time himself as the Caps' season came to an end. Lower body injury was the word on Neuvirth throughout the postseason but a hip flexor was named the culprit after their season ended. Early talk is Vokoun won't return to the Caps, giving Neuvirth and Holtby added value in 2012-2013.
News:Nikita Filatov has signed a two-year deal with Salavat Yulaev of the KHL reports the Ottawa Sun.
Analysis: It certainly appears that the Nikita Filatov experiment is over for good in Ottawa. The Senators will need to make a qualifying offer to Filatov, who will become a restricted free agent come July 1st, or he'll become unrestricted. Ottawa's management is debating whether or not to do so, but odds are good that GM Bryan Murray will take a pass and end the team's association with the winger. His fantasy value next year is next to nil.
News:Jay Beagle broke his foot in the second period of Game 5 versus the Rangers. He finished the game but was unable to return for Game 6 or 7.
Analysis:Jay Beagle said the hardest part of having a broken foot wasn't playing on it for two periods but was missing the last two games of the series that eventually eliminated the Caps from the postseason. He had surgery on his foot and will likely miss the next four to six weeks of workouts. Beagle said he will be able to go for training camp however.
News:Artem Anisimov grabbed an empty-net goal and added an assist in the Rangers' 3-0 victory over the Devils in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Monday.
Analysis:Artem Anisimov had gone pointless the final three games of the Rangers' second-round win over Washington, but iced the victory with the empty-net goal Monday. His primary assist on Chris Kreider's second goal showed the type of vision the tall Russian has for making plays as he fired off a perfect pass to spring his teammate.
News:Alex Burrows has netted two goals for Team Canada since returning from an upper body injury last week.
Analysis:Alex Burrows has scored in back-to-back games and appears to be full recovered from the big hit he took against Slovakia on May 4. It doesn't look like owners will have to worry about this injury heading into the 2012-13 season.
News:Anze Kopitar picked up an assist in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals and has now tallied a point in four straight games.
Analysis:Anze Kopitar has now registered a point in eight of the 10 games the Kings have played this postseason.
News:Dustin Brown notched the game-winning goal in Sunday's 4-2 win over Phoenix.
Analysis:Dustin Brown has arguably been the Kings' best player this postseason and now has eight points in his last five games.
News:Dwight King picked up a pair of goals in the Kings' Game 1 win over the Coyotes on Sunday.
Analysis:Dwight King now has three goals in his last three games but don't count on that kind of production going forward.
News:Braden Holtby acquitted himself well as New York eliminated Washington from the postseason Saturday. The Caps dropped a tense 2-1 decision in Game 7 in New York as the 22-year-old netminder stopped 29 shots.
Analysis: Two months ago, he was toiling in Hershey in the AHL. But the Rangers never called on another backstop in their 14-game playoff run; Braden Holtby never gave them a reason to look elsewhere, concluding the postseason with a mark of 7-7 (with four of the losses coming in overtime) and composite stats of 1.95, .935. Performances like that tend to get players invited back when training camps open in September. Veteran Tomas Vokoun's contact expires in July, so who knows? Washington may be looking at him as its goaltender of the future. Pay attention to his contract negotiations this summer to get a better sense of that role.
News:Alex Ovechkin was all but a no-show for Saturday's Game 7 at New York, managing just two shots on goal in the 2-1, season-ending loss.
Analysis: We'll give the Rangers credit for playing a stifling defense, but the game's biggest players are supposed to step up in Game Sevens, and Ovie didn't answer the call Saturday night. He was frequently out of position and sloppy with the shooting opportunities that he did see. Of course, this game will be largely forgotten in September when fantasy draft day arrives; he's still an elite player, though not at the level he was a few years ago.
News:Brooks Laich took one puck off an ankle and another one to the face in the second period of Saturday's Game 7 loss to the Rangers. Both shots caused him visible pain, but he didn't miss a shift in the contest, during which he registered an assist, his seventh point in 14 postseason contests.
Analysis: What do you expect? He's a hockey player, not an actuary. He'll now have four months to get healthy before training camp opens in September. To put it mildly, he features prominently in Washington's long-term plans.
News:Roman Hamrlik scored Washington's final goal of the 2011-12 season Saturday, a 2-1 loss to the Rangers in Game 7 of the Conference Semifinal.
Analysis: Thus begins one more offseason for the veteran Czech rearguard, who turned 38 in April. He's under contract for one more year.
News:Brad Richards connected on the Rangers' first shot of the night Saturday to give the Blueshirts an early lead in a Game 7 that they went on to win, 2-1, over the Capitals.
Analysis: While no one will question the conditioning of a modern NHL player, you have to start considering fatigue. The Rangers have gone seven games in each of their first two playoff series, and Brad Richards averaged over 25 minutes of ice time in the second round against the Caps. In comparison, over the regular season, during which he played in all 82 games, Richards averaged 20:16 of ice time. The conference finals begin Monday against a well-rested Devils squad, and Richards will probably be checking how much gas is in the tank as he laces 'em up for the 97th time this season. We're not going to tell you to jump ship, but at least be aware of this factor as you estimate his third-round value.
News:Jeff Halpern will replace Jay Beagle for the Caps in Saturday's Game 7, Washington Post's Katie Carrera reports.
Analysis:Jeff Halpern played for Beagle in Game 6, which was his first game since March 23 at Winnipeg. He saw 10:23 of ice time, showing a little rust. He won seven of 13 faceoffs, finishing minus-1 with four penalty minutes after a double minor for high-sticking.
News:Marek Zidlicky (undisclosed) sat out Friday's optional practice, according to the Bergen Record's Tom Gulitti. He likely will be in the lineup for Monday's Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Analysis:Marek Zidlicky is tied with teammate Bryce Salvador for the team's scoring league amongst blueliners with six points. Zidlicky is likely just resting and will be back for the start of the next round. He's made some heady offensive plays and has not made too many huge defensive errors. He finished the second series against Philadelphia strongly with four points in the last three games.
News:Kris Letang has been bothered by a hip injury that could eventually require surgery, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis:Kris Letang has been advised to simply rest his hip. The Penguins defenseman, who scored 10 goals and 42 points in 51 games, has not disclosed any of the particulars of his ailment.
News:Kirill Kabanov could be headed to the KHL, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
Analysis: This not confirmed and Isles GM Garth Snow admitted that it's "news to me". Kirill Kabanov has never played in the NHL but the Isles do have high hopes, he is under contract with the team for three more seasons.
Wings' Franzen Suffers Broken Nose In International Play
News:Johan Franzen suffered a broken nose while playing for Sweden in Friday's World Hockey championship match against Russia, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: He was hurt when he received a cross-check from Russia's Dmitri Kalinin. Johan Franzen will likely be checked for concussion symptoms, but he appeared to be dealing with just the broken nose after Friday's game.
News:Jaromir Jagr is expected to test the free agent market rather than immediately re-sign with the Flyers, Philly.com reports.
Analysis:Jaromir Jagr will likely scan his suitors and choose one that gives him the best chance to win a Cup, which very well could be Philadelphia.
Flyers Still Hopeful Pronger (Concussion) Can Return
News: Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren said Thursday he still believes Chris Pronger (concussion) will play next year, Philly.com reports.
Analysis:Chris Pronger was ruled out for the season in December after his severe post-concussion symptoms would not dissipate. There's been no word on if he's been able to do any type of physical activity beyond the normal day-to-day. This will play out over the summer, but with the scrutiny players with concussions have begun to come under, it's a tenuous situation at best.
Voracek Unable To Play for Czechs at the World Championships
News:Jakub Voracek (shoulder) will not be able to play for Czechoslovakia at the World Hockey Championships, Bill Meltzer of Hockey Buzz Wire reports.
Analysis:Jakub Voracek was eliminated from the NHL playoffs after the Devils beat the Flyers 4-1 in the series, but the shoulder issue won't allow him to resume play until next season.
News: With Cory Hodgson now in Buffalo and Ryan Kesler recovering from shoulder surgery, Jordan Schroeder could get a chance to make the Canucks' roster out of training camp next season, the Vancouver Province reports.
Analysis: The Canucks first-round pick in 2009 showed improvements with Chicago of the AHL this season, finishing with 44 points (21 G, 23 A) in 76 games. He's small (5-9, 180) but Jordan Schroeder has great speed, hands and vision. Make sure he's on your radar in keeper leagues.
News:Clayton Stoner signed a two-year, $2.1 million contract to remain with the Wild, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis:Clayton Stoner had just five points in 51 games last season, but did add some toughness with 71 hits and 80 blocks.
News:Zbynek Michalek underwent successful hip surgery Wednesday, the Penguins' official site reports.
Analysis:Zbynek Michalek is expected to be ready for the start of training camp next season, though after a campaign that saw him record just 13 points in 62 games, his status is of more import to the Pens' blue line depth than it is to fantasy owners.
News:Alexander Radulov is dealing with what he calls a "minor" leg injury that he referred to as "just a little crack in the knee," the Tennessean reports.
Analysis:Alexander Radulov, who notes that the issue will probably require surgery to repair, is headed for free agency this offseason, with a possible return to the Preds obviously not a lock after the forward was slapped with a one-game suspension during the playoffs due to a violation of team rules.
News:Nicklas Backstrom had two assists in a 2-1 Game Six win over the Rangers on Wednesday night.
Analysis:Nicklas Backstrom's assists were number five and six this postseason, good for eighth in the league. He has eight points in the playoffs this year. The Caps play the decisive game seven in New York on Saturday.
News:Saku Koivu signed a one-year extension with the Ducks on Wednesday, the team's official Twitter feed reports.
Analysis: His numbers fell off in 2011-12, but the terms of the contract were not immediately disclosed and it's possible that Saku Koivu may have signed for less than he made last season as a result. Koivu finished with 38 points over 74 games for the Ducks last season.
News:Zac Rinaldo played 8:43 in Tuesday's series-ending Game 5 loss against New Jersey, posting six hits and two penalty minutes in his only game during the second round.
Analysis: The Flyers were looking for any semblance of energy as they faced elimination, but inserting Zac Rinaldo didn't affect too much. Rinaldo did manage to lay a nasty knee-to-knee hit on the Devils' Dainius Zubrus during his scant ice time.
News:Danny Briere assisted on Philadelphia's lone goal in Tuesday's series-ending loss to New Jersey; he finished the playoffs with a league-leading eight goals and 13 points.
Analysis: Few players in the NHL are more adept to producing in the postseason than Danny Briere. His eight goals tied him with teammate Claude Giroux for the league lead and Briere put up 13 points in 11 games. He had a quiet regular season with 49 points in 70 games but reminded those of his knack for the postseason.
News:Chris Stewart's conditioning came into question during this past season and he pledged work this offseason with a strength and conditioning coach, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: "I think this is probably the biggest summer of my career," said Chris Stewart, who could become a restricted free agent July 1. Stewart had 15 goals and 30 points in 79 games, but much more was expected. He was a healthy scratch twice during the playoffs and was often not part of the top-six during the regular season.
News:Alex Pietrangelo confirmed that he suffered a sprained knee during Game 1 of the Blues' playoff series against the Kings, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis:Alex Pietrangelo wasn't 100 percent after returning to the series, which the Blues' lost, 4-0. He was on the ice for six of the Kings' seven goals in the final two games.
News:Maxime Talbot scored Philadelphia's only goal in their series-ending Game 5 loss to New Jersey.
Analysis:Maxime Talbot had been quiet this series with no goals, but he did have a point in each of the last two games. Talbot finished the playoffs against Philadelphia with four goals and is locked up for another four years with the Flyers.
News:Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 27 of 30 shots Tuesday as the Devils defeated the Flyers 3-1 to end their conference semifinal series in five games.
Analysis:Ilya Bryzgalov will not want to spend too much time reflecting on what should have been in these playoffs, as he let some truly atrocious goals through, though the Flyers' wide-open style certainly didn't offer much assistance. Starting next season with a clean slate seems likely to do the Russian netminder -- not to mention his team -- some good. Remember, this is a rebuilding project for the Flyers; they were really never expected to be here in the first place.
News:Andrej Meszaros (back) has a good chance to play Tuesday against the Devils, csnphilly.com reports.
Analysis:Andrej Meszaros hasn't played since March 1, but it looks like he'll be out there Tuesday, as the Flyers try to avoid playoff elimination, down 3-1 in their series with New Jersey.
News:Jaroslav Halak (ankle) will need a couple more weeks to heal, Lou Korac of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: The Kings finished off a clean sweep of the Blues on Sunday, and Jaroslav Halak said it was a "bad feeling" not being able to play in the series. The 26-year-old went 26-12-7 with a 1.97 GAA this year, and his current high ankle sprain isn't expected to be an issue come the start of the 2012-13 season.
News:Troy Brouwer assisted on both Washington goals in Monday's overtime loss to the Rangers in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.
Analysis:Troy Brouwer had been quiet offensively this postseason, but has some experience with deep playoff runs from his days in Chicago. The Caps are hoping for some more offensive production from Brouwer and will need help from everyone if they are to stay alive in Game 6.
News:John Carlson scored one of Washington's two goals in Monday's Game 5 overtime loss to the Rangers in their Eastern Conference semifinals.
Analysis:John Carlson has been one of the Caps' best players this postseason and he fired home what should have been the game's winning goal before Washington surrendered the lead. Carlson has been everything Mike Green should be and he will definitely be on radar screens for this fall's drafts.
News:Anton Stralman fired home his third goal of the postseason in Monday's Game 5 win over the Capitals.
Analysis:Anton Stralman had two goals in 53 games during the regular season after joining the Rangers as a free agent following a training camp tryout with New Jersey. Odds are, Stralman won't carry the team's offensive load from the blue line, but he's chipping in unexpectedly and has a 34-point season to his credit.
News:Lauri Korpikoski (undisclosed) took part in the Coyotes' team practice Sunday, azcentral.com reports.
Analysis:Lauri Korpikoski, who has been out since Game 1 of the Coyotes-Predators' series, practiced with the team Sunday. His playing status for Monday's Game 5 is questionable at this point, but it appears he could return. Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett told reporters that Korpikoski is "getting closer." Check back closer to game time Monday for a confirmation on his playing status.
News:Rostislav Kleslav has earned a one-game suspension for his hit from behind on Matt Halischuk, Kevin Allen of USA TODAY reports.
Analysis: The veteran has been a key part of the Coyotes' defense in what some would consider a surprise playoff run, logging 19 minutes of ice time per game. It remains to be seen how the Coyotes will account for his absence in Game 5.
News:Marc-Edouard Vlasic, who suffered a right leg injury in Saturday's World Hockey Championships game, was pronounced "done for the tournament" Sunday, the Calgary Sun reports.
Analysis: "It's tough to lose a good young player like Marc-Edouard," Team Canada general manager Kevin Lowe said. "He's a very mobile defender who will be hard to replace." Marc-Edouard Vlasic had just 23 points (4G, 19A) this season, but he played in all 82 contests and recorded a plus-11 ratio.
News:Mike Green scored the game-winning goal on a third-period power play Saturday to lift the Capitals to a 3-2 victory in Game 4 of their series against the Rangers.
Analysis: It's just his second goal in his last 36 games -- injuries had plagued him this season -- but it couldn't have come at a more opportune time. He blew it through Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist, something that few have been able to do this season. He may not return to his lofty offensive heights given the Caps' defensive focus, but a return to the list of top-10 fantasy defenders should be easy next season ... if he's healthy.
News:Steve Downie recently underwent shoulder surgery to repair a separated joint, reports the Denver Post.
Analysis: After suffering a shoulder injury March 3 against Pittsburgh, it was widely believed that the ailment continued to bother Steve Downie over the last month of the season, even though he only missed one game. The exact timetable of his rehab remains unclear, but it's expected he will be ready to return by the start of training camp. Downie was certainly a factor for the Avs after he was obtained from Tampa Bay via trade in February, scoring 28 points in 55 games A healthy Downie should be even more productive next season - don't forget about him on draft day.
A. Kostitsyn Likely To Return To Preds' Roster For Game 5
News:Andrei Kostitsyn will likely return to the Nashville lineup for Game 5 on Monday, according to TSN.ca.
Analysis: Preds' coach Barry Trotz told reporters on Saturday that there was a 'high probability' that both A.K. 46 and Alexander Radulov would return to the lineup after missing two games. The two players were suspended one game (Game 3) for violating a team rule and Trotz kept them out for Game 4 after deciding to go forward with the same roster he used in the win in Game 3.
Preds' Rinne Strong Again In Loss To Phoenix Friday
News:Pekka Rinne gave up the only goal of the game as Phoenix defeated Nashville 1-0 on Friday night to take a three-games-to-one lead in the Western Conference Semifinal series.
Analysis: He stopped 23 of 24 shots in Friday's loss and has only allowed one goal in his last two starts. Game 5 of the series goes Monday night in Phoenix.
News: The Senators have re-signed Peter Regin, who missed most of the 2012 season with a shoulder injury, the Ottawa Citizen reports.
Analysis: The deal is reportedly for one year. Peter Regin was limited to just 10 games this season after separating his shoulder in December. Regin has 19 goals and 33 assists in 151 career games.
News:Olli Jokinen underwent successful surgery on May 1 to repair a tear in his abdominal muscle, the Flames' official Twitter page reports.
Analysis:Olli Jokinen first reported discomfort on Mar. 22, and he was examined by team physicians and treated regularly by the medical staff. The 33-year-old played through the pain, and finished with 61 points (23G, 38A) over a full 82 games. He faces a significant recovery time, but he may be able to return to full strength before the start of next season.
News:Taylor Hall (shoulder)is encouraged with his rehabilitation from surgery, the Oilers' official Twitter page reports.
Analysis: "I definitely feel like I'm really improving," Taylor Hall said. "My shoulder feels like a new shoulder." The 20-year-old posted 53 points (27G, 26A) over 61 games for the Oilers this season, and it looks like he should be near full strength when the 2012-13 season begins.
News:Matt Halischuk, who went to the quiet room after slamming into the boards in Game 3, said that he is OK for Friday's Game 4 against the Coyotes, Joshua Cooper of The Tennessean reports.
Analysis:Matt Halischuk recorded 28 points (15G, 13A) and a plus-9 ratio in his 73 regular season games, and it looks like he'll be available for Friday's contest.
News:Raffi Torres will appeal the 25-game suspension he received for a hit to the head of Marian Hossa last month, Jesse Rogers of ESPN reports.
Analysis: According to reports, the NHLPA is appealing the length of the ban, not the suspension itself. The suspension was the longest the league has given out since 2007, and would carry over until next season if it is not served during the playoffs. No date has been set for the appeal, but given Raffi Torres' record and the severity of the hit to Hossa, it is unlikely to see Torres any time soon.
News:Drew Doughty came into Thursday's Game 3 with just two points (both assists) in these playoffs, but he factored into three of the Kings' four goals -- scoring one and assisting on two others -- as they went up 3-0 in the series against St. Louis.
Analysis: This was a huge game for Drew Doughty, his most active offensive effort of the playoffs and also his most active physical effort, as he laid four hits after not having more than two in any of the Kings' previous seven playoff contests.
News:Brian Elliott was lit into for four goals on just 22 shots Thursday as the Blues fell in Game 3 against Los Angeles.
Analysis: Now down 3-0 in the series, the Blues' magical season -- led by Brian Elliott's stunning emergence as a star in goal -- is teetering on the brink of elimination. A lot of that can be laid on Elliott, unfortunately, as he's picked a bad time to hit the skids, surrendering nine goals in the last two games. To put that in perspective, Elliott hadn't even surrendered nine goals in any three-game stretch this year.
News:Alexei Ponikarovsky scored his first goal of the playoffs Thursday, putting his own rebound past the Flyers' Ilya Bryzgalov to send New Jersey to the win and a 2-1 series lead. He also assisted on Ilya Kovalchuk's first-period tally.
Analysis:Alexei Ponikarovsky is perhaps the unlikeliest of heroes, as he'd recorded just two assists and 10 shots on goal in the first nine games of the playoffs. He certainly clicked with his countryman Kovalchuk in this game, and could see more time opposite him in Game 4.
News:Dion Phaneuf will serve as as alternate captain for Team Canada at the IIHF World Hockey Championship, reports the Toronto Star.
Analysis: Let's hope this experience helps him build his game and confidence -- his game seemed to be a bit scattered at the end of the season.
News:Kirill Petrov will not join the Islanders for the 2012-13 season, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
Analysis:Kirill Petrov signed a one-year deal with the AK Bars of the KHL on Thursday. Seems he won't be playing in North America anytime soon. Petrov is staying for two reasons. One, he can make more money in the KHL and two, his mother is very ill and he wants to be close to her. The good news for the Isles is that Petrov had a multi-year offer on the table and turned that down so one could might think that he still has plans to play in North America eventually.
News:Kyle Clifford is available to play in Thursday's Game 3, Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis:Kyle Clifford has been out since he suffered a concussion from being driven into the boards by Vancouver's Byron Bitz in the Kings' playoff opener on April 11th. However, according to Kings coach Darryl Sutter, it is unclear whether Clifford will play or even warm-up. Sutter said, "He's available. He's fully cleared to practice, if you get here for warm-ups then you're going to find out." With a two-game lead on St. Louis, Sutter is not expected to shift his lineup much, especially given the solid play of his third and fourth lines.
News:Maksim Mayorov has signed with KHL's Kazan Ak-bars, Dmitry Chesnokov reports.
Analysis:Maksim Mayorov, formerly with AHL Springfield, signed with Russia's Kazan Akbar on Wednesday. In four years in the Columbus system, he has been called up for 22 games and has registered just three points.
News:David Legwand scored what turned out to be the game winning goal Wednesday night as the Predators downed the Coyotes 2-0 in Game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinal series.
Analysis: He scored at the 8:10 mark of the first period and Nashville netminder Pekka Rinne did the rest, stopping all 32 shots he faced to blank Phoenix. The goal was David Legwand's second game winner of the NHL playoffs. Game 4 goes Friday night.
News:Jason Arnott sat out Wednesday's practice due to a lower-body injury, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: St. Louis head coach Ken Hitchcock said Jason Arnott is day-to-day with the injury. Vladimir Sobotka took his place at center on the third line, while Chris Stewart took his spot on the practice roster.
Carolina Eyes In Off-Season Elite Line-Mate For Staal
News: Hurricanes management has identified nabbing a top-flight winger to skate alongside Eric Staal next year as their primary off-season priority, reports.
Analysis: Obviously the addition of a blue-chip offensive weapon onto Eric Staal's forward unit would bolster the 27 year-old's fantasy outlook. Don't get too worked up yet, but the purported short-list of potential free agency acquisitions includes Zach Parise, Patrick Marleau, and Staal's brother, Jordan.
News:Brayden Schenn assisted on Philadelphia's only goal in Tuesday's Game 2 loss to New Jersey in their Eastern Conference semifinal series.
Analysis:Brayden Schenn and his linemates, Matt Read and Wayne Simmonds, figured to score a few more during the night, but their offense could not get back on track after the early goal. Expect Schenn to give the team a handful of secondary points.
News:Eddie Lack could serve as the Canucks' backup netminder in 2012-13 if Roberto Luongo is traded this offseason, the Vancouver Province reports.
Analysis:Eddie Lack was solid for Chicago of the AHL this season, going 21-20-3 with a 2.31 goals-against average and .925 save percentage. The 24-year-old has done nothing but impress since coming over from Sweden prior to the 2010-11 season, and the Canucks' brass firmly believe he has a future at the NHL level. If he ends up with the Canucks, Lack would take on a similar role to the one Cory Schneider held these past two seasons. Of course, Lack's status for the 2012-13 season hinges on the Canucks moving Luongo and not pursuing a veteran backup for Schneider on the free-agent market, so we may not know his status until camp opens next year.
News:Cody Eakin was recalled Tuesday, the Capitals' official Twitter page reports.
Analysis: The 20-year-old played in 29 NHL games this season, posting eight points (4G, 4A). He led all AHL Hershey rookies in goals (13), assists (14), and points (27) this year, and he may get a chance to suit up in the team's series against the Rangers.
News:Sean Collins was recalled Tuesday, the Capitals' official Twitter page reports.
Analysis:Sean Collins only put up 10 points (2G, 8A) in 65 games for AHL Hershey this season, but he should provide some defensive depth for the Capitals in their series against the Rangers.
News:Dany Sabourin was recalled Tuesday, the Capitals' official Twitter page reports.
Analysis: The 31-year-old goaltender went 3-2 with a 3.19 GAA in this year's Calder Cup (AHL) playoffs. Dany Sabourin hasn't appeared in an NHL game since 2008-09, but he may get a chance to back up Braden Holtby in Wednesday's Game 3 against the Rangers.
News:Mike Richards tallied a goal and an assist in Monday's 5-2 win over the Blues.
Analysis:Mike Richards started the postseason off with a bang with three points in his first game, but had been limited to just a lone assist in his next five games before his multi-point effort Monday.
News:Justin Williams picked up a goal and an assist in the Kings' 5-2 win over the Blues on Monday.
Analysis:Justin Williams is enjoying a nice run this postseason, with points in five of seven games, but Monday's goal was his first of the playoffs.
News:Matt D'Agostini, who sat out Game 1, was on the roster for Game 2 of St. Louis' playoff series against Los Angeles.
Analysis:Matt D'Agostini replaced Chris Stewart in the lineup and scored the Blues' second goal in their 5-2 loss to the Kings.
Hartnell (Foot) Nursing Injury as Flyers Ready For Game 2
News:Scott Hartnell had an ice pack on his foot Monday, but is expected to play Tuesday against the Devils, Philly.com reports.
Analysis:Scott Hartnell took a shot off his foot Sunday, but was able to return to the ice. There doesn't appear to be much of any chance Hartnell will not be available for Game 2. The fact he was able to return in Game 1 should alleviate most concerns that it will seriously affect his play.
News:Mike Knuble scored one of Washington's three goals in Monday's Game 2 win over the Rangers.
Analysis:Mike Knuble had not scored since Game 5 of the first-round series against Boston, but has been doing his dirty work on the checking line for Washington. The veteran's high-scoring days are behind him, but he has playoff experience and can be a factor for Washington.
News:Brian Boyle (concussion) played 15:20 in Monday's Game 2 loss to Washington, putting one shot on goal and registering six hits.
Analysis:Brian Boyle had been a game-time decision due to a concussion, but he returned for the pivotal Game 2. Odds are he will continue to have his symptoms monitored heading into Game 3.
News:Tyler Seguin, who suffered what was described as a detached tendon in his left hand on March 15, will most likely require surgery to repair the issue, the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: After suffering the injury, team doctors told Tyler Seguin that he couldn't do further damage to his hand by playing, so he continued to do, often at a high level. The second-year forward ended up leading the Bruins in both goals (29) and points (67) in 81 games, while recording a plus-34 rating. Assuming a full recovery from his hand issue, heading into the 2012-13 season, the future is bright (with an arrow pointing up with regards to his fantasy prospects) for the electric Seguin, who possesses game-changing speed and a laser shot.
News: The previously undisclosed injury that slowed Patrice Bergeron in the NHL playoffs, was a strained oblique, the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis:Patrice Bergeron noted that he first felt the injury in Game 3 of the Bruins' first round playoff series against Washington and then aggravated the injury in Game 5. Bergeron will not require offseason surgery and though it's unfortunate for the Bruins that he was hampered in the playoffs, on the plus side, his injury was not concussion-related, something that would represented a major red flag given the Selke Trophy candidate's injury history on that front.
News:David Perron logged an assist and four penalty minutes Saturday as the Blues lost the series opener to the Kings, 3-1. He had only one shot on goal on the night.
Analysis: You'd expect a guy who posted an 18.4 shooting percentage in the regular season to fire away in the playoffs. But that hasn't happened; after launching five times in the first-round opener against San Jose, he has just six shots in the ensuing five postseason games. Expect the coaching staff to get after him to fire at the net more often and see if good things happen.
News:B.J. Crombeen was hit with a ten-minute misconduct penalty in the waning seconds of Saturday's Game 1 against Los Angeles.
Analysis: On the off chance that you started him, you got a nice bonus in the PIM column. But few fantasy owners did that, as his value is minimal in most formats.
News:David Backes scored in the first frame of Saturday's second-round opener against Los Angeles, but the Kings posted three unanswered goals after that to win, 3-1, and take an early series lead.
Analysis: This is his second tally of this postseason, and we expect more. Keep him active as long as the Blues keep skating.
Greene's Game-Winning Shortie Propels Kings To Early Series Lead
News:Matt Greene sent home a shorthanded goal in the second period of Saturday's Game 1 agianst St. Louis. The goal held up as the game-winner as the Kings took the opener, 3-1.
Analysis: This tally might not affect too many playoff pools, as Matt Greene isn't at the top of many fantasy owners' wish lists. His value remains primarily in the tough-guy columns, not on offense.
News:Dustin Penner assisted on the Kings' opening goal, then capped the scoring with a late empty-netter as Los Angeles won in St. Louis at the outset of the second round. He finished the night plus-2.
Analysis: After a forlorn regular season, he's showing signs of coming around in the playoffs.
News:Jason Chimera scored the Capitals' lone goal in a 3-1 loss to the Rangers on Saturday.
Analysis: He has points in three straight games. His speed earned him the goal -- he was just too fast for the Rangers D to catch.
News:Sean Bergenheim fractured his left foot in the first period of Thursday's Game 7 loss to New Jersey, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
Analysis: Apparently Sean Bergenheim wanted to play for Team Finland this summer, but he will now focus on healing instead. He should be fully recovered well before the start of the 2012-13 season.
News:Tomas Fleischmann played with a broken left hand during Florida's first-round series against New Jersey, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
Analysis: This may be part of the reason he had such a quiet series after playing so well in the regular season. The hand should be fully healed by the start of the 2012-13 season.
News:Kris Versteeg (left hip) will undergo surgery Thursday in Nashville, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
Analysis:Kris Versteeg will be a restricted free agent this offseason. He has played for four different teams over the past three seasons and should be in line for a nice contract after setting career highs in goals and points during the 2011-12 season. His hip injury is not expected to be a problem by the start of the 2012-13 season, but it's worth monitoring his progress to make sure that the recovery process goes as planned.
News:John Madden (nose) says he wants to play next season for the Panthers, according to Miami Herald's George Richards.
Analysis:John Madden and teammate Tomas Kopecky accidentally collided in Thursday's Game 7 against the Devils and Madden took the worst of the collision. He has several stitches to his face and will need nasal surgery. Despite these injuries and the fact that he'll turn 39 in May, Madden would love to play another season in the NHL. He finished with three goals in 31 games this season.
Preds' Bouillon Nabs Pair Of Assists In Loss Friday
News:Francis Bouillon assisted on two goals in a 4-3 overtime loss to Phoenix on Friday night in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals.

Nashville's Hornqvist Gets Two Points In Loss Friday
News:Patric Hornqvist picked up two helpers Friday night as Nashville fell to Phoenix 4-3 in overtime in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinal series.

News:Evgeni Malkin is one of three nominees for the Hart trophy, given annually to the NHL's most valuable player.
Analysis: He's competing against Henrik Lundqvist of the Rangers and Steven Stamkos of the Lightning. He's never won the award despite being nominated twice before, but this year led the league in scoring with 109 points. The award will be handed out on June 20 in Las Vegas.
News:Tyson Strachan was sent down to San Antonio Friday for the Rampage's Game 5 matchup against Chicago, the Panthers' official Twitter reports.
Analysis: Injuries forced Tyson Strachan into the lineup during the Panthers' playoff series against the Devils. He may be able to land a permanent role with the Panthers next season.
Sens' Alfredsson Will Take Time To Consider Returning, Retirement
News:Daniel Alfredsson will take his time during the offseason to determine whether he wants to retire or return to Ottawa for an 18th season, the Toronto Globe and Mail reports.
Analysis:Daniel Alfredsson is 39 years old and has played all 17 of his NHL seasons with Ottawa. He has one year remaining on his four-year, $19.5 million contract, but since the deal was mostly frontloaded, Alfredsson would stand to earn about $1 million next year. He registered 27 goals for the Senators this season.
News:Tuukka Rask, a free agent, sees Boston as a good situation and hopes to re-sign with the team, according to the Bruins' official Twitter page.
Analysis: Although Tuukka Rask has yet to begin negotiating a new contract with the Bruins, he appears to feel content with his role as the backup to Tim Thomas. Rask may also stand to benefit if he re-signs due to his potential to inherit the starting job, as there's been talk that the Bruins may trade Thomas. While Rask doesn't figure to get the bulk of the playing time if both he and Thomas stay with Boston, he was nonetheless excellent in a backup role this season, posting a record of 11-8-3 and a 2.05 GAA.
News:Zdeno Chara has been named a Norris Trophy finalist along with Nashville's Shea Weber and Ottawa's Erik Karlsson, the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis:Zdeno Chara, who won the Norris Trophy in 2009, scored 12 goals and added 40 assists for a career-high 52 points in 79 games this past season. He also recorded a spiffy plus-33 rating, while continuing in his role as one of the NHL's top shut-down defenders. While the big guy is no doubt smarting from Thursday's playoff elimination, from an individual standpoint his 2010-11 season was a resounding success. At 35, he shows no signs of slowing down at this point in his career, especially given the rigorous fitness/conditioning regimen he keeps.
News:Jose Theodore stopped 33 shots Thursday in Game 7 against the Devils, but saw his season end on Adam Henrique's second goal of the game in double overtime.
Analysis: This has to be a tough pill to swallow for Jose Theodore, who played very well despite the first-round exit, but suffered a knee injury that caused him to miss two games, both of which were lost by backup Scott Clemmensen.
News:Craig Anderson stopped 27 of 29 shots Thursday against the Rangers, but in the end, the Senators gave up one odd-man rush too many and took a 2-1 loss to drop the series in seven games.
Analysis:Craig Anderson certainly can't take any blame for the series loss, as he allowed just 14 goals on 208 shots in the seven games, good for a .933 save mark. Ottawa simply couldn't scrape together enough offense against Henrik Lundqvist.
News:Jacob Markstrom has been returned to AHL San Antonio, the Panthers' official Twitter page reports.
Analysis:Jacob Markstrom is no longer needed by the big club for now, with Jose Theodore back in business for the Panthers heading into Thursday's Game 7 against the Devils.
News:Jason Garrison will suit up Thursday for Game 7 against the Devils, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Harvey Fialkov reports.
Analysis:Jason Garrison missed the two previous games with a lower body injury. Garrison, along with his booming shot, will be a welcomed addition to the Panther blue line. Garrison scored a power-play goal in Game 3 to go along with the nine he scored during the regular season.
News:Manny Malhotra could be bought out of the final year in his contract this summer, the Vancouver Province reports.
Analysis: Canucks general manager Mike Gillis wouldn't comment on the situation, but he didn't deny that buying out Manny Malhotra was a possibility. The veteran center has struggled to rediscover his form after suffering a brutal eye injury during the 2011 season. He finished 2012 with 18 points in 78 games.
News:Kevin Bieksa admitted this week that he played with an undisclosed injury near the end of the regular season and in the playoffs, the Vancouver Province reports.
Analysis: This helps explain why Kevin Bieksa received so many maintenance days down the stretch. The ailment is reportedly in his midsection, but the Canucks defenseman wouldn't identify the injury. He plans to meet with doctors shortly and take care of any necessary repairs over the offseason.
News:Brent Burns finished the season with 11 goals and 26 assists for the Sharks.
Analysis:Brent Burns' numbers were down from his career year in '10-'11 with Minnesota although it was another strong year for the defender as he finished the season seventh on the Sharks stat sheet for points, even while finishing the season nursing an abdominal strain.
News:Joe Pavelski finished the season nursing foot and knee injuries, David Pollack of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis:Joe Pavelski needed an injection for an injured foot. while also having thumb and knee ligament problems. The University of Wisconsin product finished with 31 goals and 30 assists in his sixth season and should play a big role in the Sharks offense going forward.
News:Joel Ward scored at 2:57 into overtime to give the Caps a 2-1 win over the Bruins in game seven Wednesday night.
Analysis: The goal was Joel Ward's first goal and third point of the playoffs. He has averaged around just ten minutes a game but he came through when it counted for the Caps. Ward scored just six goals during the regular season.
News:Byron Bitz was re-assigned to Chicago of the AHL on Tuesday, the Canucks' official site reports.
Analysis: The Canucks season is over, so the team is sending Byron Bitz back to the minors to pay for the Wolves in the AHL playoffs. Bitz totaled four points in 10 games with the Canucks this season.
News:Logan Couture will have surgery next week to repair a left shoulder separation, CSN's Brodie Brazil reports.
Analysis: This has been an older nagging injury for Logan Couture. There's no reason he shouldn't be ready to go by the start of next season.
News:Scott Clemmensen stopped 39 of the 42 shots he faced in Tuesday's Game 6 overtime loss to New Jersey, losing his second game of the series.
Analysis:Scott Clemmensen was stellar for the Panthers, who didn't allow too many threatening scoring chances despite the high shot total for New Jersey. Clemmensen gave Florida a chance to win, and with the injury to Jose Theodore, odds are Clemmensen will start the decisive Game 7 on Thursday.
News:Alexander Edler might skip the upcoming world championships due to a lingering finger injury, the Vancouver Province reports.
Analysis: The injury stems all the way back to the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals, when Alexander Edler broke two fingers on his right hand. He has continued to have problems with the fingers ever since and will visit a doctor Wednesday to determine his course of action. Edler claimed the injury didn't affect his play this year, and he has plenty of time to heal, so this shouldn't be an issue when the puck drops for the 2012-13 season.
News:Keaton Ellerby (lower body) is slated to be a game-time decision for the Panthers' Game 6 tilt against the Devils on Thursday, South Florida Sun-Sentinel writer Harvey Fialkov reports.
Analysis:Keaton Ellerby left Game 4 early in the second period with the injury and is close to being able to return. Ellerby has value as a long-term keeper option.
News:Milan Michalek will not face disciplinary action from the NHL for kicking the Rangers' Dan Girardi in Monday's Game 6, Chris Botta of The New York Times reports.
Analysis: Since no hearing has been scheduled for Milan Michalek, he will be available for Thursday's decisive Game 7. Michalek has recorded a goal and an assist in six postseason contests to date.
News: GM Ray Shero revealed Tuesday that Paul Martin has been dealing with concussion symptoms, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Assuming that his symptoms are not severe, Paul Martin now has plenty of time to recover this offseason, with the Penguins having been eliminated from the playoffs.
News:Oliver Ekman-Larsson tallied his first career playoff goal in the Coyotes' 4-0 win over the Blackhawks on Monday, sending Phoenix to the second round.
Analysis:Oliver Ekman-Larsson's second period power-play goal from the blue line would eventually stand as the game-winning goal. The score came after the Coyotes weathered an incredible offensive storm from Chicago through much of the first two periods, heading into the third period with a stunning 28-8 SOG differential. The Coyotes scored on 20 percent of their shots Monday night.
News: Coach Claude Julien believes that Joe Corvo -- who missed Sunday's Game 6 after suffering what appeared to be a knee injury while blocking a shot in Game 5 -- should be fine, the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: The implication here is that Joe Corvo's injury is not serious, but until we hear something more specific, we'll consider him day-day-day. Corvo's play during the regular season was spotty at times, but in five playoff games, he has performed capably, recording a plus-3 rating in the process.
News: The status of Adam McQuaid (upper body), who has yet to suit up in the playoffs, remains unchanged, the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis:Adam McQuaid isn't much of a scorer, but the Bruins miss his size and steady play in transition on their blue line. If the team advances past Washington on Wednesday, his status for the next round is unclear.
News:Jason Spezza scored the Senators' second goal in Ottawa's loss to the Rangers in Monday's Game 6, giving him three goals in the last two games.
Analysis:Jason Spezza's goal on the night was reviewed for several minutes following a scrum in front of goal that may have included a kick of the puck by his teammate, Chris Neil, but Spezza got credit for the goal. The veteran playmaker has four points in the last three games and has vexed the Rangers much.
News:Jiri Tlusty has signed a two-year, $3.2 million deal with the Hurricanes, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: He clicked in head coach Kirk Mueller's system and could prove to be a nice value for Carolina if his development includes more time on a line with Eric Staal next season.
News:Chris Neil scored a goal in Ottawa's Game 6 loss to the Rangers; the goal was his second of the series.
Analysis: There is some debate as to whether Chris Neil should have been even playing in the game considering the hit he laid on the Rangers' Brian Boyle in Game 5, but Neil escaped a Shanaban. Neil likely won't score too often, but he has found some opportune moments to score in this series.
News:Derek Stepan registered a goal and two assists in Monday's 3-2 in over Ottawa in Game 6 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series.
Analysis:Derek Stepan had been quiet the last four games, with no points despite seven shots on goal in Saturday's Game 5 loss. He's a talented playmaker and the Rangers will need another effort like this from him in Game 7.
News:Brian Strait has been sent down to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton following the Penguins' first-round playoff loss, the Penguins' Official Website reports.
Analysis:Brian Strait recorded just one point for the Penguins in nine contests this season. He will remain with the Wilke-Barre/Scranton Penguins throughout the remainder of their postseason run.
News:Simon Despres has been sent to the Penguins' AHL affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, for the remainder of that team's playoff run, the Penguins' Official Website reports.
Analysis:Simon Despres showed signs of potential in his time in the NHL this season. He recorded four points in 18 contests with the Penguins.
News:Eric Tangradi has been sent down to AHL affiliates Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the Penguins Official Website reports.
Analysis: Following the Penguins' first-round playoff exit against the Flyers, Eric Tangradi has been sent down to play in the remainder of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton playoff series against the Hershey Bears. Tangradi recorded two points in 24 games for the Penguins this past season.
News:Marian Hossa, who is dealing with a suspected concussion, won't play Monday against the Coyotes, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Analysis: On the plus side, Marian Hossa visited the United Center Monday morning, and he's reportedly feeling much better. His status beyond Monday's Game 6 is cloudy, though the Hawks must of course avoid elimination for it to affect those in playoff pools.
News:Jakub Kindl's future with the Wings is murky, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: The addition of Kyle Quincey ate into his playing time down the stretch, and the Wings would like to see more grit from Jakub Kindl if he's going to stick on their blue line. If he's a part of the plan in 2012-13, look for him to work as half of the team's third defensive pairing. As a depth option, he could simply continue to serve as the seventh blueliner next season and become the first option in should injuries strike. Kindl had 13 points (1 G, 12 A) and a plus-7 rating in 55 games this season.
News:Brendan Smith is expected to be a part of the Wings' Opening Night roster next season, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: With the potential retirement of Nicklas Lidstrom and the expected departure of Brad Stuart via free agency, Brendan Smith could see top-four minutes and ultimately be considered as a potential power-play quarterback along with Ian White. Smith racked up seven points (1 G, 6 A) in 14 contests with the Wings as a rookie this season and looks like a nice sleeper candidate with the path to a regular (and larger) role.
News:Pavel Datsyuk, who finished the regular season with 67 points in 70 games and a plus-21 rating, is a finalist for the Selke trophy, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: He struggled in the playoffs when the Preds had their two top blueliners paired against him, but three-time Selke award winner had another excellent season in the defensive zone and is a finalist along with Patrice Bergeron and David Backes. During the offseason, the Wings are expected to target a sniper in free agency to ride shotgun on Pavel Datsyuk's line. If that happens, it should alleviate some of the defensive pressure he sees and lead to a push-back above the point-per-game pace he's hovered around over the last two seasons.
News: The Wings are interested in bringing back Fabian Brunnstrom, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: "The last 20 games, he really took a step forward in Grand Rapids," general manager Ken Holland said. "We're interested in bringing him back, and we think he's interested. We'll see what happens. But he finished strong in Grand Rapids." It's expected that Fabian Brunnstrom will receive offers from teams in Sweden, so it's unclear if he will be willing to accept another two-way deal with Detroit. Brunnstrom had 12 goals and 23 assists in 45 games with Grand Rapids (AHL) around time missed with a concussion this season.
News:Teddy Purcell was one of the first invitees who accepted an offer to play for Team Canada at the upcoming IIHF World Championships.
Analysis: He is coming off the best season of his career with bests in goals (24), assists (41), points (65), power-play goals (eight), game-winning goals (three) and plus/minus (plus-9). His production was good enough for second on the team in assists and third in goals and points.
News:Dale Weise will join the fourth line in place of Zack Kassian in Game 5 on Sunday, The Vancouver Sun reports.
Analysis: It appears that Dale Weise will be the only lineup change the Canucks will make. He'll join the line with center Manny Malhotra and left winger Mason Raymond.
News:Tomas Holmstrom may opt to retire this summer, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: He reached double-digit goals this season, while 10 of his 11 tallies came with the man advantage. At this stage of his career, Tomas Holmstrom is a role player, and retirement seems like the most probable outcome this summer as he's taken a pounding while camping out in front of opposing netminders over the years.
News:Nicklas Lidstrom is once again weighing his options regarding retirement, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: He'll likely take a couple of months to make a decision, and would probably tip off general manager Ken Holland to the idea that he wouldn't return prior to the start of free agency. Nicklas Lidstrom's offensive production slipped in a big way this season as he delivered 34 points in 70 games after racking up 62 points in 82 games during the 2010-11 season, but he still managed a plus-21 rating and the Wings would undoubtedly be happy to have their captain back for another season.
News:Brad Stuart is expected to leave the Red Wings as an unrestricted free agent this summer, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: It's believed that Brad Stuart will seek out an opportunity to play closer to his family in San Jose, while the Wings are expected to pursue another top-four blueliner (potentially, Nashville's Ryan Suter) in free agency. Although Stuart isn't a great fantasy asset, his departure will create a large void on the Detroit blue line if general manager Ken Holland doesn't find a top-tier free agent to replace him.
News:Darren Helm (forearm) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: He already had surgery to repair the tendons when the Wings were still in the playoffs. Darren Helm's value as a third-line contributor and plus-forechecker were missed against Nashville, but he'll likely be back in a similar role for head coach Mike Babcock next season.
News:Danny Cleary will have surgery in the near future to repair torn cartilage in his left knee, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: He was receiving pain-killing injections throughout the season while trying to work through the ailment, but it clearly limited Danny Cleary's effectiveness on the ice. It sounds like the operation will allow plenty of time for Cleary to rehab and recover in preparation for the start of training camp in the fall.
News:Joey MacDonald (back) may need to have offseason surgery, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: The Wings are going to try a plan of rest, rehab and injections for Joey MacDonald first, but general manager Ken Holland said that it could be a case where MacDonald has surgery to repair the slightly bulging disc in his back.
News:Patrick Eaves (concussion) expects to be 100 percent for the start of training camp in September, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: In addition to starting skating drills within the last week, Patrick Eaves has been working out in the gym as well. Assuming that he's able to make it through the summer without a setback, Eaves should be able to reprise a checking-line role for the Wings next season.
News:Radim Vrbata was held off the scoresheet for the fourth time in five playoff games as the Coyotes lost in overtime to the Blackhawks, 2-1 on Saturday.
Analysis: In fairness, he only skated one shift in Game 1 because of an injury, so it's really more like four games. But the Phoenix faithful are sitting on their hands, waiting for him to show the kind of offense that he displayed during the regular season. One key is his shots on goal; except for a seven-shot outburst in Game 2, he has only four shots in the series. We suspect that the coaching staff will urge him to fire away and look for good things to happen.
News:Gilbert Brule was the only Phoenix skater to find nylon in Saturday's 2-1 Game 5 loss to Chicago. It's the first playoff point of his NHL career.
Analysis: He has yet to demonstrate the kind of offensive prowess that would lead us to recommend him to you. He had just 14 points in an injury-shortened campaign.
Crawford Stonewalls Phoenix As Blackhawks Win In OT
News:Corey Crawford answered Chicago coach Joel Quenneville's call Saturday, allowing one goal as the Blackhawks won the series' fifth overtime game to stay alive in the first-round matchup.
Analysis: His job was a lot easier because of the smothering Chicago defense in front of him. He faced only 19 shots all night, while his counterpart, Phoenix's Mike Smith, saw double that number.
News:Nick Leddy bagged his first career playoff goal Saturday as the Blackhawks beat the Coyotes to force a Game 6 in the first-round series. He finished the game plus-2.
Analysis: His offense was a pleasant surprise this year, which can accurately be described as a breakout campaign. He gives the Blackhawks three legitimate offensive threats from the blue line, along with Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith.
News:Jonathan Toews scored in the third minute of yet another overtime game as the Blackhawks took Game 5 in Phoenix on Saturday night, 2-1.
Analysis: It doesn't seem possible, but this is his first OT tally of the entire season. Jonathan Toews was actually marginally worse in home-ice action than on the road this season, but given his talent, that marginal difference shouldn't dissuade you from starting him in Monday's Game 6 in Chicago.
News:Viktor Stalberg collected all four of the Blackhawks' penalties in Saturday's Game 5 in Phoenix, then assisted on Jonathan Toews' overtime tally as Chicago stayed alive in the series.
Analysis: He is by no means an enforcer; he had just 34 PIMs over the course of the regular season. He just happened to get whistled again and again in this game. Fortunately for the Chicago faithful, the Hawks managed to kill all four Phoenix power plays.
News: With two straight wins, Marc-Andre Fleury is peaking at the right time after starting out poorly against the Flyers.
Analysis: He was Pittsburgh's best penalty killer Friday night. Marc-Andre Fleury played particularly well in the third period, when Philadelphia outshot Pittsburgh, 14-8, and the Pens were clinging to a one-goal lead. The Penguins goalie has allowed only two goals in the last 104-plus minutes of action. He'll need to stay on his game for Pittsburgh to have a chance at moving on to Round 2.
News:Jordan Staal leads the NHL in playoff scoring with six goals after collecting a goal Friday night in Game 5.
Analysis:Jordan Staal's more than just a Selke-caliber defenseman -- not that there's anything wrong with that -- and he's proving it in the playoffs. He's a big reason why the Penguins aren't already teeing them up.
News:Antti Niemi made 24 shots in a 3-1 series-ending loss to the Blues on Saturday night. He allowed two goals.
Analysis: He won the first game in the series, but then came out on the losing side of the next four. His teammates just didn't provide him with a lot of support this series -- they were shut out in one of those losses and managed just a single goal in two others.
News:Joe Thornton scored the Sharks' only goal in a 3-1 loss to the Blues on Saturday night. The loss eliminated the Sharks from the playoffs.
Analysis: He had points in the Sharks' final three games but it wasn't enough to lift his team to victory. He finishes the postseason with two goals and three assists in five games.
News:Patrik Berglund's assist in the Blues' Game 5 win over the Sharks gives him seven points (three goals, four assists) in the playoffs.
Analysis: He has looked fantastic this postseason and will be critical to the Blues' success going forward. This could be the breakout we've all be hoping and praying for.
News:Andy McDonald scored his fourth goal of the playoffs in Saturday's Game 5 clincher over the Sharks.
Analysis: He leads the Blues with eight points in five games and should continue his productivity next series, regardless of opponent.
News:Tim Thomas stopped 28 shots in a 4-3 loss to the Capitals in Game 5 on Saturday night.
Analysis: The winner came on what should have been a routine save. And there appears to be a rift developing between the 'tender and his teammates after some critical comments Tim Thomas made about his team after Game 4. Thomas hasn't been the goalie he was in last year's postseason and he has been outplayed by the Caps' Braden Holtby. He'll need to better on Sunday.
News:Jimmy Hayes is in the lineup for the Blackhawks for Game 5 on Saturday night, WGN-AM Radio in Chicago reports.
Analysis: The Blackhawks are looking for some more muscle with the 6-foot-6-inch, 221-pound right winger. Jimmy Hayes is in the lineup over Brandon Bollig. Hayes had five goals and four assists in 31 games during regular season.
News:Mason Raymond was demoted to the team's fourth line at practice Friday and it appears he will be staying there for Game 5. "I know the young man is trying hard but, obviously, the way he is playing right now he doesn't deserve to be on one of the top three lines," coach Alain Vigneault told the Vancouver Sun. "We expect more from him. I'm sure he expects more from himself."
Analysis:Mason Raymond has just one assist in this series, and given that he's not even averaging 14 minutes of ice time and just got removed from a scoring line, you should consider other options until he re-proves himself to his coach. For now, it looks like he'll skate with Manny Malhotra and Dale Weise.
News:Tyler Kennedy scored what turned out to be the game-winner midway through the second period on Friday night as Pittsburgh held on to defeat Philadelphia, 3-2.
Analysis: He also added an assist on Pittsburgh's second goal. Tyler Kennedy is having a solid series with three goals and three assists through five games. Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series goes Sunday afternoon.
News:Blake Wheeler passed on an invite to join Team USA at the IIHF's upcoming World Championships, according to Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun.

Analysis: Looks like Dustin Byfuglien is committed to shaking the injury that limited him down the regular season's home-stretch.

News:Scott Parse (hip) continues to skate before practice but seems unlikely to return this season, the LA Kings Insider reports.

Sens' Winchester Suffers Upper Body Injury In Win Wednesday
News:Jesse Winchester suffered an undisclosed upper-body injury in Wednesday night's 3-2 overtime win over the Rangers reports the Ottawa Sun.
Analysis: He left the game during the second period and did not return. There's no indication if he might be back in time for Game 5 which goes Saturday night. News:Alex Bolduc was recalled by Phoenix on Monday, the Coyotes' official website reports.
Analysis:Alex Bolduc has played in just two regular season games for Phoenix this season, recording two penalty minutes, but he fared a little better in 23 games for AHL Portland, notching three goals and 12 assists. Bolduc, who suited up for three of the Canucks' playoff games last season, gives the Coyotes a little extra depth up front for their playoff run.
News:Devin Setoguchi recently had minor surgery to repair his injured ankle, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

News:Dany Heatley recently underwent a minor knee procedure, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis:Dany Heatley notched 24 goals and 29 assists this season, and was one of just three players on the Wild to appear in every game. There is no timetable for recovery, but with the whole offseason to recover, his status for next season should not be affected by the procedure.
News:Niklas Backstrom underwent minor surgery to help repair an injured ankle, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis:Niklas Backstrom appeared in just 46 games this season, posting a 19-18-7 record with a .919 save percentage. Getting this taken care of so early in the offseason will help his chances of being ready to go next season, but it's still something to keep an eye on.
News:Dan Hamhuis dished out two assists in Wednesday's Game 4 win over the Kings.
Analysis: He setup the first and final goals in Wednesday's 3-1 win. After a stellar regular season, Dan Hamhuis could be a big help in playoff pools if the Canucks can comeback from down 3-0 in the series to advance to Round 2.
News:Daniel Sedin, who had been sidelined since March 21 with a concussion, returned to the ice Wednesday night. He dished out an assist while seeing nearly 20 minutes of ice time as the Canucks avoided elimination by beating the Kings 3-1.
Analysis:Daniel Sedin said he felt good in his return and should be safe to deploy in your playoff pools going forward. If the Canucks can come back from down 3-0 to advance, Sedin will end up being one of the bigger steals in playoff pools this year.
News:Kyle Turris wired a wrist shot over the glove hand of Henrik Lundqvist at the 2:42 mark of overtime to give Ottawa a huge 3-2 win over New York to even the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at two games apiece.

News:Sergei Bobrovsky entered Wednesday's Game 4 loss to Pittsburgh, but struggled mightily.
Analysis:Sergei Bobrovsky relieved Illya Bryzgalov, but both allowed five goals on 18 shots. Bryzgalov has struggled this series, but the Flyers still are only a game away from clinching a berth into the next round.
News:Brad Winchester "took regular shifts" at practice Wednesday, TSN reports.
Analysis:Brad Winchester and Michal Handzus appear to have moved ahead of T.J. Galiardi and Dominic Moore in the lineup.
News:Michal Handzus "took regular shifts" at practice on Wednesday, TSN reports.
Analysis:Michal Handzus spent a significant portion of this season as a healthy scratch, but it appears he will get a chance to play in Game 4 on Thursday. Brad Winchester also took regular shifts, while T.J. Galiardi and Dominic Moore appear to be the guys who will cede ice time. However, you should keep in mind that the Sharks have not committed to the lineup yet and could make a change before Thursday night.
News:Patrick Marleau skated on the second line with Martin Havlat and Ryan Clowe during Wednesday's practice, ESPN's Pierre LeBrun reports.
Analysis: Apparently Logan Couture skated with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski on the first line, taking Patrick Marleau's place. Couture has three points through the first three games of the series, while Marleau still has not gotten on the scoresheet. It seems likely that the Sharks will go with these lines during Game 4 on Thursday. If so, Marleau will miss playing with Thornton, who assisted on all three goals during Monday's 4-3 loss.
News:Brad Richardson (appendectomy) pronounced himself ready to play Wednesday against the Canucks, the LA Kings Insider reports.
Analysis: The report adds that Brad Richardson will likely replace Andrei Loktionov on the Kings' fourth line in Wednesday's Game 4.
News:Michael Leighton has cleared re-entry waivers, according to TSN.
Analysis:Michael Leighton will now join the Flyers as their third goalie as they attempt to get past Pittsburgh in the first road. Leighton will likely only see action in an emergency.
News: The NHL has suspended Arron Asham four games for attempting to injure Philadelphia forward Brayden Schenn with a cross-check in the first period of Sunday's loss, the Associated Press reports.
Analysis:Arron Asham is more of a role player for the Pens, but when you add in the fact the team will also be without suspended teammates James Neal and Craig Adams, and is down 3-0 in the series ... well, the Pens find themselves in quite the dilly of a pickle.
News: The NHL has suspended James Neal one game for charging Flyers forward Claude Giroux in the third period of Sunday's loss, the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: Well, the Penguins certainly have quite the hole to dig themselves out of, as they're down 3-0 in the series and will be missing three players due to suspension when the series resumes Wednesday, including their second-leading scorer in James Neal.
News:Johan Hedberg stopped 13 of the 14 shots he faced in relief of Martin Brodeur during Tuesday's Game 3 loss to Florida. He played 36:20 after entering a 3-3 game early in the second period.
Analysis:Johan Hedberg was able to give the Devils more sound goaltending than Martin Brodeur, allowing just one goal, although it was the game-winner. Look for Hedberg to resume his backup duties in Thursday's Game 4.
News:Patrik Elias scored for the second time in three games Tuesday, grabbing a goal in the Devils' 4-3 loss in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series.
Analysis:Patrik Elias has been a productive player during his postseason career, so it shouldn't surprise that he has factored into New Jersey's scoring in the early part of the series.
News:Brian Campbell posted a goal and an assist in Monday's Game 3 win over New Jersey, giving him three points in the last two games.
Analysis:Brian Campbell fired home one of Florida's three power-play goals, sneaking down from the point and scoring the eventual game-winner. With 53 points, Campbell was the second-best scorer among NHL defenseman during the regular season; he should remain productive in the postseason.
News:Luke Schenn has accepted an invitation to play for Team Canada at the upcoming IIHF World Hockey Championship, reports TSN.ca.
Analysis: It's his third invite in four years, not surprising given the growth of his game and the failure of his NHL squad to make the postseason. The experience should benefit his game.
News:Yann Danis was voted the best goalie in the AHL this past season, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: Unfortunately for Yann Danis, unless there is an injury to Nikolai Khabibulin or Devan Dubnyk, Danis has very little chance to start next season in Edmonton.
News:Carlo Colaiacovo collected three assists in St. Louis' win over San Jose in Game 3 of their quarterfinal playoff series.
Analysis: The Blues made the Sharks pay for taking penalties, scoring three times with the man advantage and Carlo Colaiacovo is regular part of the team's power play. Two of his three assists came with the Blues up a man.
News:Craig Adams will likely miss Game 4 Wednesday night due to a suspension, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis:Craig Adams will likely face a suspension for Wednesday night's Game 4 against the Flyers, pending a review by the NHL. Adams was assessed an instigator, in addition to a fighting major, when he provoked a fight with Flyers' winger Scott Hartnell with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.
News:Rich Peverley scored in Monday's 4-3 win over Washington in Game 3, his first points of the playoffs.
Analysis:Rich Peverley should give the Bruins solid secondary scoring, as he did during the regular season. He's not going to carry the offense, but he has a knack for the odd goal and a well-timed assist.
News:Brian Rolston scored his first goal of the postseason in Monday's 4-3 win over Washington in Game 3. He has a point in each of the three playoff games.
Analysis:Brian Rolston was waived by the Devils and traded from the Islanders over the last year before being snagged by Boston at the trade deadline. The veteran apparently still has some jump left in his step and could continue to factor into Boston's scoring.
News:Carter Hutton was recalled from Rockford of the AHL along with five other players on Monday, ESPN Chicago reports.
Analysis:Carter Hutton dressed for two games in Chicago as a backup, but never skated. Hutton had the most games played at goalie in Rockford with 43 and went 22-13 with four shootout losses and three shutouts. Hutton had a 2.35 goals against average and a .917 save percentage.
News:Brandon Pirri was recalled from Rockford of the AHL along with five other players on Monday, ESPN Chicago reports.
Analysis:Brandon Pirri had skated in five games for the Blackhawks this season and registered two assists. Pirri led the IceHogs in points with 56 and assists with 33 in 66 games.
News:Jeremy Morin was recalled from Rockford of AHL along with five other players on Monday, ESPN Chicago reports.
Analysis: The IceHogs season in the AHL is over and Jeremy Morin accumulated 18 goals and 22 assists in 69 games. He was up with the Blackhawks for two games this season, but did not register a point.
News:Matt Gilroy will be active for Game 3 against the Rangers, Ottawa Citizen writer Allen Panzeri reports.
Analysis: With Matt Carkner serving a one-game suspension Matt Gilroy will get some additional ice time. However, it's tough to expect any significant fantasy value from him.
News:Jake Allen will back up Brian Elliott in Game 3 of St. Louis' quarter-final playoff series against San Jose on Monday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis:Jake Allen, a second-round pick in 2008, gets the nod because Jaro Halak is not available after leaving Game 2 with a lower-body injury. Allen will be suiting up for his first NHL game.
News:Matt Carkner will have a hearing with the NHL's VP of discipline Brendan Shanahan on Sunday regarding his punch of New York's Brian Boyle on Saturday, the Ottawa Sun reports.
Analysis:Matt Carkner started the ugly brawl and was thrown out during the first period of Saturday's game. A suspension appears likely for Carkner.
News:Joe Vitale will sit out Sunday as a healthy scratch, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis:Joe Vitale was a thorn in the Flyers' side during the regular season but has been a non-factor in the playoffs. He played just 34 seconds in the third period of Friday's game. Veteran Richard Park will start in his place.
News:Ben Lovejoy will serve as a healthy scratch Sunday against the Flyers, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis:Ben Lovejoy made an ill-advised clear in his own zone Friday that directly led to a Philadelphia goal. The fact that he came back two weeks into a projected four-week rehab schedule from arthroscopic knee surgery makes Sunday's move an easy one.
News:Richard Park will make his postseason debut Sunday in Philadelphia, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: The Penguins will sit Joe Vitale in Richard Park's favor. Vitale played only 34 seconds in the third period of Friday's Game 2 loss. Pittsburgh hopes for defense and a stabilizing force from the 35-year-old Park.
News:Matt Niskanen (shoulder) will play Sunday afternoon against the Flyers, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis:Matt Niskanen has missed the Pens' last four games. His presence will be be a welcomed addition on the blue line, even though he's playing at less than 100 percent.
News:Brent Johnson replaced Marc-Andre Fleury in the third period of Sunday's game against the Flyers, Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly.com reports.
Analysis: Fleury gave up 11 goals in the first two games of the series, and six more Sunday. The Penguins were down 6-4 when Fleury was pulled, and it's uncertain who will get the nod in Game 4.
News:Patrick Sharp's desperate goal with 5.5 seconds left in regulation brought on overtime for the second straight playoff game. The Blackhawks won in OT on Saturday night in Phoenix to even this first-round series, 1-1.
Analysis: He didn't have the game-winner, but this sure felt like one. He has one point in the first two playoff games; you should expect him to pick up that pace as the series shifts to Chicago.
News:Bryan Bickell scored his second goal of the contest 10:36 into overtime Saturday as the Blackhawks evened their first-round series at Phoenix at a game apiece. He had opened the game's scoring with a first-frame power-play marker.
Analysis: He's an unlikely offensive hero, but on this night he connected on half of his four shots on goal. If you're counting on lots more multi-point games from him in this playoff run, you're likely to go hungry.
News:Dominic Moore suffered a broken nose after what the Sharks felt was a sucker punch from the Blues' Vladimir Sobotka at the end of Saturday's game.
Analysis: Sobotka, who might arguably be the Blues' strongest player pound-for-pound, had Dominic Moore by the neck of his jersey as the Shark lay on his back on the ice. Sobotka could have plastered him but held his arm cocked back instead ... until Moore started jawing at him. One 'pop' was all it took but Sharks' coach Todd McLellan took exception to the hit afterwards. Moore probably won't miss any time.
News:T.J. Galiardi may face supplemental discipline after receiving a charging penalty in the third period of Saturday's Game 2 loss to the Blues.
Analysis: He absolutely hammered the Blues' Andy McDonald, who has previously missed games due to concussion, right in the head along the boards; the hit was so hard it smashed McDonald's helmet, exposing the black foam inside. McDonald continued to play but was incensed, and the league may take the victim's history into consideration.
News:T.J. Oshie set up two goals in a 3-0, Game 2 win over San Jose on Saturday night.
Analysis: The third goal originally appeared to be his but it was tapped in by Andy McDonald. T.J. Oshie finished with a career-high 19 goals and 54 points this season, and brings an impressive two-way tenacity to the ice on every shift.
News:Ryan McDonagh was injured on the last play of Saturday's overtime loss to Ottawa.
Analysis: He was going down to block a shot, but wasn't in the right position and took a Jared Cowen slap shot right off the family jewels. He was screaming in agony as the Sens' Chris Neil stuffed the winner home. He was able to collect himself enough to get to the bench, hunched over and unable to really push off with either leg. He would be a monumental loss to the Rangers if he can't play next game -- he's one of the team's leading blueliners.
News:Benoit Pouliot scored the Bruins' only goal Saturday in a 2-1, double-overtime loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: He won't score many this postseason but will provide depth offense if you're overloading on Bruins after each round ... that is, if you think they're bound for a repeat.
News:Keith Ballard (concussion, neck) returned to action Friday night. He dished out an assist while picking up two penalty minutes in the Game 2 loss to the Kings.
Analysis: Friday marked Keith Ballard's first game since Feb. 7. Ballard saw over 14 minutes of ice time on 23 shifts. While it was nice to see him pick up an assist in his return, he also had a costly cross checking penalty in the third period which led to the eventual game-winning goal.
News:Shea Weber scored with less than five minutes remaining in the third period to cut Detroit's lead to 3-2, but it wasn't enough as the Wings held on for the win Friday night.
Analysis: While Shea Weber didn't turnbuckle any Detroit players on Friday, he did get into a first period fight with Todd Bertuzzi. He also finished with five shots on goal and an even rating. The goal was Weber's first point of the series.
News:Jimmy Howard stopped 24 of 26 shots Friday night as Detroit downed Nashville 3-2 in Game 2 of the Western Conference quarterfinal series.
Analysis: He made some huge saves throughout the game to keep Detroit in it and was named the game's first star. Game 3 of the series goes Sunday at 12 PM EST.
News:Chris Kunitz struck for two goals as Pittsburgh fell 8-5 to Philadelphia on Friday. Philadelphia now leads the Eastern Conference quarterfinal matchup two games to none.
Analysis: While he scored two goals and fired four shots on net, Chris Kunitz finished the night with a minus-5 rating in a wild game. The goals were his first points of the series.
News: After sitting out Wednesday's 3-2 win over Detroit as a healthy scratch, Ryan Ellis may find himself back in the lineup for Game 2 on Friday, according to the Tennessean.
Analysis: The Preds were 0-for-6 on the power play during Game 1, and Ryan Ellis is a proven power play quarterback. "If I had a crystal ball and said, hey we're going to have six power plays,' I would say, OK let's go with Ellis," coach Barry Trotz said. Ellis had 11 points in 32 games during the regular season, including four points on the power play, so he could be a difference-maker for Nashville in Game 2.
News:Nik Antropov will miss the World Championship due to a knee injury, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: He's reportedly also still bothered by a hand injury that might even require surgery, so while Nik Antropov probably would have been able to gut out a playoff run, the fact that the Jets didn't make the postseason dance leaves Antropov in better health for next season's drafts. Still, he may be spending a good portion of his summer healing up.
News:Andrew Ebbett (shoulder) will play against Los Angeles on Friday, Vancouver Province writer Jason Botchford reports.
Analysis:Andrew Ebbett has played just 18 games this year, posting six points (five goals) in that span.
News:Cam Janssen will be inactive for Friday's Game 2 against Florida, the Bergen County Record reports.
Analysis:Cam Janssen has failed to make much of an impact for the Devils this season, recording only one point in sparse playing time. The Devils evidently felt other players were more useful than Janssen for Game 2.
News:Eric Boulton will sit out Game 2 Friday against the Panthers, the Bergen County Record reports.
Analysis:Eric Boulton failed to score a point in 51 games played, severely limiting his fantasy value. The fact that Boulton went unclaimed after the Devils put him on waivers earlier in the year demonstrates that he isn't exactly a game-changer.
Coach Julien: Bruins' Krejci (Neck) Will Play Saturday
News:David Krejci (neck) will suit up for Game 2 against the Capitals on Saturday, the Washington Post reports.
Analysis:David Krejci is dealing with a neck issue, and his absence from Friday morning's practice prompted concern about his playing status for Saturday. Claude Julien quelled all concerns, saying Krejci is "fine." Expect Krejci to be used as he normally would be on Saturday.
News:Marc-Andre Bourdon (upper body) will be deactivated for Game 2 against Pittsburgh, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Analysis:Marc-Andre Bourdon sustained an injury during the second period in Wednesday's Game 1 win and remains day-to-day. Pavel Kubina will take his place in the lineup on Friday.
Flyers' Kubina Set To Replace Bourdon In Lineup For Game 2
News:Pavel Kubina will take Marc-Andre Bourdon's place in the lineup for Game 2 against the Penguins, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Analysis:Pavel Kubina was scratched from Game 1, but appears primed to serve as Philly's fifth defender at the very least for Friday. If Bourdon's minutes from Game 1 are any indicator, expect Kubina to see around ten minutes of ice time in Game 2.
News:Jerred Smithson will be inactive for Game 1 against the Devils, the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Buried deep on Florida's depth chart, Jerred Smithson wasn't much of a factor in fantasy leagues during the regular season. Smithson recorded only six points on limited ice time during the season, indicating the Panthers shouldn't be handicapped by his absence.
News:Mike Santorelli will sit out Game 1 against the Devils, the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Roster limitations forced Mike Santorelli to the bench for Game 1. He saw his ice time decrease toward the end of the regular season with more talented centers ahead of him, so the decision to deactivate him shouldn't be overly surprising.
News:Krys Barch is a healthy scratch for Game 1 against New Jersey on Friday, the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis:Krys Barch didn't typically see more than ten minutes of ice time during the regular season, so his presence shouldn't be missed much with more talented wings ahead of him on the depth chart.
News: Boychuck (knee) returned to the Boston lineup for Thursday's playoff opener against the Capitals.
Analysis:Johnny Boychuk logged 17:58 worth of ice time Thursday and did not appear hampered by the knee issue that sidelined him late in the season. Though his stats this season were modest (15 points in 77 games), Boychuk's booming shot is a weapon that keeps opposing defenders/goalies on their toes.
News:Kevin Shattenkirk fired 11 shots on goal to go along with four blocked shots, two hits and an assist in Thursday night's Game 1 double-overtime loss to San Jose.
Analysis:Kevin Shattenkirk logged 33:06 of ice time and was extremely active in his first taste of the NHL postseason, but it was his inability to clear the puck early in the second overtime that led to Martin Havlat's game-winner.
News:Brenden Morrow played in just 57 games and recorded only 26 points (11 goals, 15 assists), the lowest total of his career except for his 18-game 2008-09 season.
Analysis:Brenden Morrow missed significant time this year with a variety of upper-body injuries, and when he was on the ice, he didn't play very well, as he posted the lowest scoring rate of his career. At 33 years old, Morrow shouldn't quite be washed up, as he was a 30-goal man just two years ago. He's an interesting sleeper for next year, as his combination of points and PIM is useful in fantasy -- when he's healthy.
News:Guillaume Latendresse (concussion) finished the 2011-12 season with just 16 games played. He had nine points and a plus-six rating.
Analysis: That's only 27 games in the last two seasons for Guillaume Latendresse, who's struggled with concussions and a groin injury this year, also had a variety of injuries (groin, hip, shoulder, abdomen) last year. The injury-prone winger certainly has talent, but it remains to be seen whether he can stay on the ice. However, he'll be only 25 at the start of next year, so there's still hope that Latendresse can resurrect his career.
News:Brent Seabrook tied the game with 15 seconds remaining in the third period Thursday in Game 1 of the playoffs against Phoenix, but the Blackhawks ended up losing in overtime.
Analysis:Brent Seabrook was a solid contributor in the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup run two years ago, but managed just an assist in five games in last year's first-round letdown. His complementary scoring from the blue line is a significant part of Chicago's game.
News:Patrick Kane assisted on both Chicago goals Thursday in the Blackhawks' Game 1 overtime loss to the Coyotes.
Analysis:Patrick Kane's obviously been a playoff stud before -- that is, two years ago, when he lifted the Stanley Cup. The 'Hawks will need him to power their offense again to push through the playoffs.
News:Ryane Clowe assisted on both of Martin Havlat's goals Thursday in Game 1 against the Blues -- first a power-play tally to open the game's scoring, then a double-overtime goal to end it.
Analysis:Ryane Clowe, who had been held out of practice due to an undisclosed injury, certainly didn't look hurt in this one. He's a big part of San Jose's offense despite having a down season in which his point total declined to just 45 in 76 games.
News:Dan Boyle assisted on both San Jose goals in regulation Thursday in a double-overtime Game 1 win over St. Louis.
Analysis:Dan Boyle's been a big part of the Sharks' postseason offense overtheir last two seasons, picking up 30 points in 33 games, and it appears he's right back where he left off. Some guys are just playoff performers.
News:Martin Havlat scored his second goal of the game 3:34 into double overtime Thursday to defeat the Blues in Game 1 of the opening playoff series. He also opened the night's scoring with a second-period power-play goal.
Analysis:Martin Havlat had a tough year thanks to injuries, only making it into 39 games and recording 27 points, including a career-low seven goals. However, he entered the playoffs on a four-game points streak and made it five with this performance, so it appears things are turning around for Havlat at just the right time of year.
News:Chris Kelly scored the lone goal of Thursday's Game 1 win over Washington 1:18 into overtime.
Analysis: Impressive work by Chris Kelly, who hadn't scored a game-winning goal in his 61 prior playoff games. This was a career-best offensive season for Kelly both in goals and total points, so it's great for the Bruins to see him take it into the playoffs.
News:Erik Condra scored the first playoff goal of his career late in Thursday's Game 1 loss to the Rangers.
Analysis:Erik Condra managed just 25 points this season, but he's got more offensive talent than that. The second-year man skated just 10:25, which certainly limits his upside in playoff pools.
News:Linus Omark is likely to be dealt by the Oilers before the draft, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: This seems to be one of those situations where a change of scenery is needed. Linus Omark has never quite fit in with the Oilers and although the team is expected to extend a qualifying offer before the deadline in June, they will only be using that offer as a tactic to get a draft pick for the youngster.
News:Emerson Etem was assigned to the AHL on Thursday, AnaheimDucks.com reports.
Analysis: It's only the WHL, but Emerson Etem's 107 points (61 goals) from this year are certainly encouraging.
News:Matt Hendricks, who had just nine points in 78 games this year, will be as happy as anyone to see the slate wiped clean for the playoffs.
Analysis:Matt Hendricks was at least a modest depth-line offensive contributor the last two years, recording 16 and 25 points, but he really went to an extreme of defense-only hockey this year. With a minus-6 rating, though, his value even on that side of the ice can be questioned.
News:Zenon Konopka returns to the playoffs as a member of the Senators this year after not making the postseason with the Islanders in 2010-11.
Analysis:Zenon Konopka skated in 55 games for Ottawa, recording 193 PIM and five points. The 31-year-old probably won't be called upon to fight too much in the playoffs, so expect his appearances to be limited.
News:Torrey Mitchell (undisclosed) will play against St. Louis on Thursday, CSN Bay Area's Brodie Brazil reports.
Analysis: With just 19 points on the year, Torrey Mitchell's availability presumably won't be a huge factor in Thursday's game.
Panthers' Sturm Practices With Team; Remains Questionable
News:Marco Sturm (lower back) was on ice Thursday for the Panthers' final practice before the playoffs begin, but remains questionable for Friday's Game 1 contest against New Jersey, the Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis:Marco Sturm has been unable to stay on the ice this season, playing just 42 games and collecting five points during the regular season. If Sturm can't go, expect Krys Barch to assume the majority of his minutes Friday against the Devils.
News:Sidney Crosby scored the first goal of the game on a well-placed backhander and added an assist on Pittsburgh's third goal, but it wasn't enough as the Flyers came from behind to win 4-3 on Wednesday night.
Analysis: He was solid all night long, playing over 19 minutes and finishing the night with a plus-1 rating. It was Sidney Crosby's first playoff game in almost two years.
News:Derek Smith's upper-body injury at the end of the season was actually a concussion, the Calgary Herald reports.
Analysis:Derek Smith was injured March 20 when he took a puck to the face and missed the rest of the season. Smith has said he still isn't feeling well and is taking it day by day, but has a lot of time to recover before next season starts. Hopefully the summer off will help out Smith, as he is a young defenseman bursting with potential.
News:Zack Kassian will return to the lineup for Game 1 against the Kings after missing the past two games with a shoulder injury, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: The youngster will add some size and tough, energetic play to the fourth line, where he's expected to skate with Manny Malhotra and Byron Bitz.
News: The Islanders have returned Casey Cizikas to AHL Bridgeport, the team's official site reports.
Analysis:Casey Cizikas, who ended up tied for Bridgeport's scoring lead (44 points in 51 games), was given a chance to play in the NHL with the Islanders in late February and managed four assists in 15 games during his stay with the big club. Now that the Islanders' season is finished, Cizikas is headed back to Bridgeport to see more ice time.
News: The Ducks have sent Nate Guenin (face) to AHL Syracuse, the team's official Twitter feed reports.
Analysis:Nate Guenin is headed back to play with Syracuse after he appeared in 15 games and scored two goals for the Ducks. He last suited up for the Ducks on March 19 due to a face injury he incurred and now he will finish out the season with Syracuse.
News:Matt Cooke is ready for the playoffs after sitting out the 2010-11 postseason due to a suspension.
Analysis: The gritty forward changed his ways in 2011-12, totaling only 44 penalty minutes while compiling 38 points. He had two goals -- including a 3-on-5 shortie -- in five games against the Flyers and finished the regular season with a career-high 19 goals. Matt Cooke has returned to his usual third line mates, Tyler Kennedy and Jordan Staal, after a productive fling with Sidney Crosby.
News: GM Peter Chiarelli said that he expects Nathan Horton (concussion) to be ready for the 2012-13 season, the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis:Nathan Horton, who hasn't played since suffering a concussion on Jan. 22, will be shut down for the playoffs, but Chiarelli's comments imply that Horton's situation is closer to that of Patrice Bergeron (who made a successful comeback from his concussion woes) than that of Marc Savard, whose career may be done.
News:Dustin Jeffrey will likely serve as a healthy scratch against the Flyers on Wednesday.
Analysis:Dustin Jeffrey has battled knee issues throughout the season and has never shown the burst of speed he's known for. He did score a goal in his only game against Philadelphia, however. Most likely, he'll have to wait for injuries before cracking the starting lineup.
Winnipeg's Slater To Represent USA At World Championships
News:Jim Slater will don the "USA" sweater in May at the IIHF's upcoming World Championships, TSN's Sara Orlesky reports.
Analysis:Jim Slater had one of his most offensively productive seasons in 2012 and finished the year by recording three points in his last two games. With any luck, he can maintain that momentum when he takes his game to the international stage.
Pens' Dupuis Enters Postseason On 17-Game Point Streak
News:Pascal Dupuis collected two goals and five points in six games against Pittsburgh's first-round playoff opponent, the Flyers, in the regular season.
Analysis:Pascal Dupuis outperformed any and all expectations in 2011-12, collecting career high's in goals (25), assists (34), and points (59). Despite his sparkling numbers, the forward finished with more short-handed points (3) than on the power play (1). Dupuis also rang up eight game-winning goals, second on the Pens behind Evgeni Malkin's nine.
News: Winnipeg head coach Claude Noel said the shoulder injury that plagued Eric Fehr down the regular season stretch will not require offseason surgery, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: For those in the very deepest of leagues who may rely on Eric Fehr's services, the news that the Manitoba native will be able to rehab his injury without going under the knife is obviously a welcomed development.
News:Jeremy Smith was recalled from AHL Milwaukee to take the place of Anders Lindback (upper body) in practice Monday, the Tennessean reports.
Analysis: With Lindback expected back at practice Tuesday, Jeremy Smith won't even have time for a cup of coffee before heading back to the minors. Nevertheless, Smith put up very decent numbers for the Admirals this season, including a 29-19-1 record, 2.25 GAA and .920 save percentage. With numbers like that, he could wind up in the NHL sooner rather than later. Keep an eye on him.
News:Anders Lindback (upper body) sat out Monday's practice but is expected back Tuesday, the Tennessean reports.
Analysis:Anders Lindback got the start in Saturday's regular season finale against Colorado but was forced to leave the game during the third period. At this point, the injury doesn't sound serious and he should be available to back up Pekka Rinne for Game 1 against the Red Wings on Wednesday.
News:Phil Kessel revealed that he's been playing with an injured left wrist and he won't play for Team USA in the upcoming World Championships as a result, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis:Phil Kessel is not expected to require surgery and should be in fine shape for the 2012-13 season. He'll be coming off a career-best 37-45-82 campaign and will certainly go in the first three rounds of almost any draft next season.
News:Carey Price has confirmed he suffered a spinal compression (neck) injury in addition to experiencing headaches after David Desharnais ran into him in practice on March 20, TSN.ca.
Analysis: Assuming the concussion Carey Price suffered was indeed a minor one, it would seem there's plenty of time for Price to get the proper head/neck treatment and rest to have him in good shape for the 2012-13 season. But as we know with any neck/head injury, nothing should be assumed, so we'll be keeping a close eye on Price's progress over the summer.
News:Toni Lydman (upper body) will undergo surgery in the offseason, AnaheimDucks.com reports.
Analysis: It's not clear what sort of surgery Toni Lydman will need since his upper body injury was not specified.
News:Keith Aulie was assigned to the AHL on Monday, Toronto Globe & Mail writer James Mirtle reports.
Analysis:Keith Aulie finished the 2011 season with three points in 36 games.
News:Francois Beauchemin will undergo shoulder surgery, AnaheimDucks.com reports.
Analysis: It's not clear at this point what sort of procedure Francois Beauchemin will undergo, nor how long of a recovery he might face.
News:Dave Bolland (upper body) will play against Phoenix on Thursday, Chicago Sun-Times writer Adam Jahns reports.
Analysis:Dave Bolland missed Chicago's last two games with the injury, but his absence was evidently precautionary for the most part.
News:Andrew Brunette (foot) said he will play against Phoenix on Thursday, Chicago Sun-Times writer Adam Jahns reports.
Analysis:Andrew Brunette missed the regular season finale, but his foot apparently is not much of a problem at this point.
News:Christian Ehrhoff said the knee injury that caused him to miss the Sabres' last five games is a sprain and will not require surgery, according to Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News.
Analysis:Christian Ehrhoff's first season as a highly paid Sabre will go down as a disappointment, as he finished with a 5-27-32 line following career-best numbers of 14-36-50 the previous year. That said, he played better with the Sabres down the stretch - like a lot of his teammates - and his absence became a pretty big factor in the team just missing the playoffs. Now that he seems to understand the system and should be healthier next season, he could be a decent bounce-back guy in the fantasy realm.
News: The Blue Jackets have re-signed Cody Bass (shoulder) to a two-way contract on Monday, the team's official Twitter page reports.
Analysis:Cody Bass was sidelined with a left shoulder injury for most of the year. Bass is known more for his fighting prowess than skill set so it remains to be seen what type of role he will play with the Blue Jackets.
News:Jochen Hecht (concussion), who is an unrestricted free agent, said that he wants to stay in Buffalo, according to Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: It seems highly unlikely that the German forward will be offered a contract by the Sabres, who have far more glaring needs that they need to address in the summer.
News:Tyler Myers told the media during Monday's locker cleanout that his foot is indeed broken, according to Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: One of these days the NHL will get serious about teams disclosing the severity of player injuries. Tyler Myers would have missed at least the first round if the Sabres made the playoffs.
News:Matt Frattin was assigned to the AHL on Sunday, the Maple Leafs' official Twitter page reports.
Analysis:Matt Frattin appeared in 56 of his 57 career games this season, and posted 15 points (8G, 7A) and 25 penalty minutes. The 24-year-old will be in the AHL for now, but there's always a chance he gets promoted at some point next season.
News:Nate Prosser was assigned to AHL Houston on Sunday, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis:Nate Prosser will be in the lineup Sunday for the Houston Aeros as they take on Milwaukee. The 25-year-old appeared in 56 games this season for Minnesota compared to just 19 for the Houston Aeros. He posted 12 points (1G, 11A) and 57 penalty minutes for the Wild, but the defenseman will continue to work on his game in the AHL for the time being.
News:Chris Conner was recalled Sunday, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: The 28-year-old was recalled to act as a safety net against injury or ineffectiveness. Chris Conner played in eight games this season, putting up three points (1G, 2A) in those contests. The Red Wings take on the Predators in Game 1 on Wednesday.
News:Andrew Ladd confirmed to TSN's Sara Orlesky that he will be a part of Canada's delegation to the IIHF's World Championships in May.
Analysis:Andrew Ladd will join Winnipeg teammate Evander Kane in Finland and Sweden for the international tournament.
Winnipeg's Kane To Participate in World Championships
News:Evander Kane will join Team Canada in May for the IIHF's World Championships, TSN's Sara Orlesky reports.
Analysis: Few in today's game have a ceiling higher than Evander Kane; he is likely to shine on the international stage.
News:Zach Bogosian was invited to join Team USA at May's IIHF World Championships but declined so as to give his injuries more time to heal in the off-season, TSN's Sara Orlesky reports.
Analysis: This comes as good news to those holding onto Zach Bogosian in keeper leagues. Though the World Championships would no doubt provide some valuable experience, "Bogo" got dinged up quite a bit this season and will benefit from the upcoming rest.
News:Teemu Hartikainen was assigned to AHL Oklahoma City on Sunday, the Oilers' official Twitter page reports.
Analysis:Teemu Hartikainen, 21, recorded five points (2G, 3A) and a plus-1 ratio in his 17 games with the Oilers this season. It's back to the AHL for Hartikainen (for now, at least), where he played 48 games and posted 30 points (14G, 16A) this year. The youngster could get another shot in the NHL during the 2012-13 campaign.
News: VandeChris Vande Velde was assigned to AHL Oklahoma City on Sunday, the Oilers' official Twitter page reports.
Analysis: The 25-year-old has 17 career NHL games under his belt, but he spent most of this season in the AHL. He put up 22 points (7G, 15A) in his 65 games in Oklahoma City, and it currently looks like that's where he'll begin the 2012-13 season. However, a lot can change before then.
News:Akim Aliu was assigned to AHL Abbotsford on Sunday, the Flames' official Twitter page reports.
Analysis:Akim Aliu scored two goals while adding an assist and 12 penalty minutes in just two games with the Flames this season. While it's hard to imagine Aliu keeping up that pace when he gets another chance in the NHL, his scoring abilities make him a player to watch going into the 2012-13 season.
News:Micheal Haley was assigned to AHL Bridgeport on Sunday, Arthur Staple of the New York Newsday reports.
Analysis:Micheal Haley was recalled in late March to take the place of injured Casey Cizikas (upper body). The 26-year-old center isn't much of a scoring threat (three career points), but he does have 151 penalty minutes in his 43 NHL games.
News:Tomas Vincour was assigned to the AHL on Sunday, the Stars' official Twitter page reports.
Analysis:Tomas Vincour, 21, put up 10 points (4G, 6A) in his 47 NHL games this season. He scored 11 goals in just 18 AHL games this year, so his goal-scoring ability makes him an intriguing young player.
News:Scott Glennie was assigned to the AHL on Sunday, the Stars' official Twitter page reports.
Analysis:Scott Glennie appeared in his first NHL game Saturday. The 21-year-old was the eighth overall pick in the 2009 Entry Draft, and there's a chance he makes the NHL club at some point next season.
News:Anton Babchuk lit the lamp in the Flames' final game of the season Saturday, a 5-2 win over the Ducks.
Analysis:Anton Babchuk had a very disappointing season, but finished on a strong note, with five points in his final nine games. It remains to be seen how large his role will be in Calgary next season, but he certainly made a case for being in the top six defensemen.
News:Rick Nash, who was questionable with a back injury, was able to play in Saturday's finale against the Islanders. He scored his 30th goal of the season.
Analysis: It's was an up-and-down season for Rick Nash amid all kind of trade rumors and poor play by the Blue Jackets, but he sure did finish with a bang, registering 11 points in his last eight games. Expect his name to be a hot topic this summer as the Blue Jackets try to figure out what they want to do for the long term.
News:Richard Bachman stopped 32 of 33 shots but the Stars came up on the short end of a 3-2 decision Saturday against the Blues.
Analysis:Richard Bachman finishes out 2011 with an 8-5-1 record, .910 save percentage, 2.77 GAA and one shutout to his name.
News:Jean-Sebastien Giguere was pulled from Saturday's season finale against Nashville after allowing six goals on 29 shots.
Analysis: This is certainly not the way Giggy wanted to close out the schedule after being in net for 15 of the Avs' 41 wins this season. Semyon Varlamov will open next season as the Avs' No. 1 netminder, but Jean-Sebastien Giguere will be waiting in the wings in case he falters.
News:Matt Duchene scored the Avs' only goal during Saturday's 6-1 blowout loss to the Predators.
Analysis:Matt Duchene had just 28 points (14G, 14A) in what was an injury-plagued season for the third-year center. We would expect a strong rebound from him next season, provided he can stay healthy. If anything, this season may provide a buy-low opportunity in next year's draft. Don't let Duchene slide too far down your picklist come October.
News:Roman Josi scored his fifth goal of the season during Saturday's regular season closer, a 6-1 laugher over Colorado.
Analysis:Roman Josi registered 16 points in 52 games this season, not a bad result considering he started the season on injured reserve with a concussion. The Preds see him as an up-and-coming blueliner who can play in all situtations, even on the power play. Keep an eye on him as he develops.
News:Kevin Klein finished the regular season on a high note, registering two assists during Saturday's 6-1 mugging of the Avalanche.
Analysis:Kevin Klein set a new personal best with 21 points this year (4G, 17A), but finished with a minus-8 rating, something the Preds will expect him to work on next season since providing offense is not first on his to-do list.
News:Thomas Greiss was summoned to the crease at the start of the third frame Saturday, with the Sharks down to the Kings, 2-0. He stopped all six shots he saw in that period and the Sharks came back to purloin a 3-2 win in overtime.
Analysis: The win propels San Jose into a first-round playoff matchup against St. Louis. Thomas Greiss will probably see ice time only when Antti Niemi stumbles.
News: In Saturday's season-ender against Vancouver, Devan Dubnyk played about as well as a goalie can and still give up three goals and lose the game. He got no offensive support whatsoever and faced 42 shots.
Analysis:Devan Dubnyk is one of a crowd of talented young players on the Edmonton roster. The Oilers will get a top draft pick again this year, and with perhaps the addition of a key free agent, could rise to the upper echelon of Western Conference teams in the next couple of years.
News: In Saturday's season finale against Vancouver, Ben Eager earned four penalty minutes, capping his season with a team-high 107 PIMs.
Analysis: Unlike some goons, who pad their totals with you-beat-me penalties such as holding and hooking, he earned these four minutes the old-fashioned way (cross-checking and roughing). Despite his meager total of 13 points this campaign, he'll be back in his enforcer role next year; the Oilers didn't hire him for his elegant passing and his deft skating.
News:David Booth capped the scoring Saturday against Edmonton, bagging a power-play goal late in Vancouver's 3-0 win. He fired an astounding 11 shots on goal on the night. The marker ends a personal 10-game scoreless streak.
Analysis: We hope your league counts shots as a separate scoring category. The shooting outburst might have been spurred by a desire to prove himself, since this season may charitably be described as somewhat disappointing.
News:Henrik Sedin scored what proved to be the game-winner Saturday, converting on a second-period power-play opportunity in the Canucks' 3-0 win over Edmonton.
Analysis: It's his first tally in six weeks, though in his defense, he's been reasonably busy racking up 16 assists in the meantime. His season total of 81 points is actually a bit of a disappointment, given his last two campaigns, in which he posted totals of 112 and 94. Watch to see whether twin brother Daniel comes back from a concussion for the playoff run; the brothers are among the league's most dangerous offensive combinations.
News:Steve MacIntyre is likely to be in the lineup Saturday, according to coach Dan Bylsma, the Penguins' Web site reports.
Analysis: "For Steve MacIntyre, this is not the first game he's played against the Flyers this year," Bylsma said. "We're really not expecting anything in the game of that nature, nor is it a situation where, for our team, we're doing anything but going out to try and win in every situation, whether it's a faceoff, whether it's a puck battle." Rest assured, the rough-and-tumble MacIntyre was not recalled from the AHL for his faceoff or puck-batting abilities.
News:Jay Bouwmeester had a goal and an assist Saturday as the Flames pounded the Ducks 5-2.
Analysis: Saturday's output means J-Bo finishes the season with 29 points in 82 games. He hasn't missed a game since the 2003-04 season, but his fantasy numbers continue to disappoint, especially that minus-22 rating. Let someone else be the one to take a flyer on him in next fall's fantasy draft.
News:Henrik Karlsson stopped 23 shots in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Ducks.
Analysis: It took Henrik Karlsson until the last day of the schedule to get his first win of the season, so his fantasy numbers aren't exactly off the charts. He'll once again compete for the backup job behind Miikka Kiprusoff in 2012-13.
Florida's Weiss Ends Regular Season With 20 Scores
News:Stephen Weiss netted his 20th goal of 2011-2012 Saturday night in a 4-1 win over the visiting Hurricanes.
Analysis: The lifelong Panther had one of his most successful regular seasons from a points perspective in 2011-2012, while also reaching new heights in penalty minutes. Expect Florida to rely heavily on Stephen Weiss, the leader in ice time among Panthers forwards, in their upcoming playoff bid.
News:Marcel Goc recorded a first period goal and late-game assist Saturday night versus visiting Carolina, his 26th and 27th points of the regular season.
Analysis: Considering all the time the former first-round draft selection missed this year due to concussion symptoms, 2011-12 was probably Marcel Goc's most productive season to date. He has the makings of a fantasy sleeper in 2012-13.
News:Taylor Pyatt scored twice in a 4-1 Phoenix win as the Coyotes claimed the Pacific Division title Saturday night.
Analysis:Taylor Pyatt's goals marked his 18th and 19th points of the season. He's not a consistent source of offense, so his contributions Saturday were a welcome surprise for the Coyotes.
News:Joni Pitkanen netted the Hurricanes' only goal in Saturday night's road loss to the Panthers. The score was his fifth on the season.
Analysis: The former fourth-overall draft selection missed significant time in 2011-12 with a knee injury that landed him on the injured reserve. When 100 percent healthy, the 28-year-old Finn makes for a serviceable fantasy option.
News: Making his eighth start of the season, Brian Boucher allowed three goals off of 25 shots Saturday night versus Florida in a 4-1 loss for the Hurricanes.
Analysis:Brian Boucher has never secured for himself a true starting job in the NHL, and can therefore be of very limited help to your fantasy squad.
News: After an overtime loss to the visiting Lightning on Saturday night in which he allowed four goals off of 25 shots, Ondrej Pavelec finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 29-28-9 record.
Analysis: Though he was plagued by inconsistency all season long, "Pav" nonetheless ended the year with a .906 save percentage and, in all likelihood, earned himself the job of Winnipeg's starting goaltender moving forward.
News:Steve Mason picked up the win Saturday for Columbus by stopping 35 shots.
Analysis:Steve Mason had a solid game but this comes on the back of a miserable season, with just an .898 save percentage entering Saturday. One has to think the Blue Jackets will look to upgrade the goalie position during the offseason.
News:Al Montoya was shelled for seven goals on 37 shots Saturday versus Columbus.
Analysis: Certainly a night to forget for Al Montoya, and probably his last game in an Islanders uniform as he is unlikely to be brought back next season. Montoya couldn't find the form this season that he had after being acquired from Phoenix during the 2010-11 campaign. He'll look to find a backup job during the summer.
News:James Wisniewski had a goal, two assists, and a fighting major during the contest. Not a bad night for the d-man.
Analysis:James Wisniewski had something for everyone Saturday night versus the Islanders, and thankfully looks to be back from his concussion issues.
News:Vinny Prospal had a goal and two assists in the Blue Jackets' 7-3 season-ending win over the Islanders on Saturday.
Analysis:Vinny Prospal ends the season with 16 goals and 55 points, numbers very similar to his last full season in the NHL, 2009-10. He will never to be a top offensive player, but can be a useful second or third line forward.
News:Peter Budaj stopped 30 of 31 shots as the Canadiens beat archrival Toronto on Saturday in the season finale for both teams.
Analysis: He enjoyed a fine stretch run in relief of the banged-up Carey Price, going 2-0-2 with six goals allowed in the four games (1.44, .945). His play this season might earn him a bit more crease time next season, whenever Price needs a rest.
News:Jack Johnson had a goal and assist for Columbus on Saturday.
Analysis: Some might have thought that Jack Johnson's play would regress with his trade to Columbus, but that hasn't been the case as his offensive abilities have actually flourished. He should not be forgotten about come draft time next season.
News:Derick Brassard dished out two helpers as the Blue Jackets beat up the Islanders 7-3 on Saturday.
Analysis:Derick Brassard ends the season with 41 points, failing to capitalize on what was a successful 2011 season.
News:Erik Cole capped a career season by scoring on a breakaway in the third period of Montreal's 4-1 win over the Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
Analysis: His 61 points this year match his career high, set during the Hurricanes' 2006-07 campaign. More impressive, he's had 82 games played in each of the past two seasons. Just remember on your next draft day that he turns 34 in November, and his principal asset is his speed. That doesn't last forever.
News:Dwayne Roloson put together a solid outing Saturday night in Winnipeg, stopping 28 of the Jets' 31 shots on his way to an overtime win.
Analysis: Despite the admirable finish, 2011-12 was a year Dwayne Roloson would probably like to forget. The 42-year-old inspires little confidence for the 2012-13 fantasy season, if he ends up playing at all.
News:Milan Jurcina had a goal and an assist in the Isles' final game of the season Saturday.
Analysis: The goal was only Milan Jurcina's third of the season. He is unlikely to be back on The Island next season, but should be able to hook up with another team looking to bolster the back of their defensive corps.
News:Michael Grabner scored his 20th goal of the season in Saturday's 7-3 loss to Columbus.
Analysis:Michael Grabner scored 34 goals last season so 20 is certainly a disappointment. Grabner still has great speed, but his inability to finish breakaways was a big part of the reason for the difference in goals from one season to the next.
News:Max Pacioretty closed out the 2011-12 campaign with a goal and an assist in Montreal's 4-1 win over Toronto on Saturday night.
Analysis: The two points put him at the top of the Montreal scoring column with 33 goals and 32 helpers. We foresee a bright future for this developing young talent.
News:Tomas Plekanec roused the Bell Centre crowd Saturday with a shorthanded goal in the first frame of Montreal's season-ending 4-1 win over the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Even more impressive, the marker came while Toronto was on a 5-on-3 power play. We hope your league counts shorties as a separate scoring category.
News:Brad Staubitz, of all skaters, scored Montreal's final goal of the season Saturday, rifling a 175-foot shot into an empty net with two minutes to play as the Canadiens whipped Toronto, 4-1.
Analysis: He waited as late as possible to register his first point of the season. He ends the campaign with 121 penalty minutes and that one lonely point.
News:Jonas Hiller stopped 18 of 23 shots in Saturday's loss to the Flames.
Analysis: This was not the Swiss netminder's best game of the season, letting in five goals against Calgary. Jonas Hiller has had an up-and-down season and will need to work on his consistency for the next campaign.
News:Bobby Ryan scored both Ducks' goals in a 5-2 loss to the Flames in their final game of the season.
Analysis: The question was asked whether Bobby Ryan would reache the 30-goal mark, and it was answered in the second period of Saturday's game when the 25-year-old scored past Henrik Karlsson with a nicely timed slap shot. His numbers will be expected to improve next season.
News:Brayden McNabb had two assists in Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Bruins.
Analysis: He played 25:19 and will likely be full of confidence as he heads back to Rochester for the AHL playoffs. The offensively talented blueliner is someone to keep an eye on in the coming years.
News:Brad Boyes scored twice in Saturday's season finale, a 4-3 shootout loss in Boston.
Analysis: Saturday's output is a positive end to a miserable season for Brad Boyes, but those who drafted him last fall are only left wondering where that was all season. The two-time 30-goal man finishes 2011-12 with just eight goals and 23 points in 65 games.
News:Jason Pominville reached the 30-goal plateau with his third period marker in Saturday's shootout loss to the Bruins.
Analysis:Jason Pominville has been steady all season for the Sabres and finishes the season with a team-leading 73 points in 82 games. His 12 PIMs should earn him strong consideration for the Lady Byng trophy, but his fantasy owners would surely like a few more penalties to go with all of those points.
News:Thomas Vanek's two assists in Saturday's shootout loss to the Bruins put him above the 60-point plateau for the fifth time in his career.
Analysis: He certainly ended the season on a high note, with 11 points in his last 10 games, but it wasn't enough to lift the Sabres to the postseason. Thomas Vanek continues to be a frustrating fantasy player to own but still holds plenty of value as the Sabres' offensive workhorse. Retain him in keeper leagues, as he should be good for another 60-70 points next season.
News:Jhonas Enroth stopped 37 of 40 shots Saturday, but the Sabres fell to the Bruins 4-3 in a shootout.
Analysis:Jhonas Enroth was making a rare start in Buffalo's season finale and acquitted himself well. He finishes 2011-12 with an 8-11-4 record, but only made three starts after the All-Star break as the Sabres leaned on Ryan Miller.
News:Colin Wilson will play against Colorado on Saturday, Predators.NHL.com reports.
Analysis:Colin Wilson had been a scratch since March 27. He has 34 points in 67 games.
News:Ladislav Smid (neck) did not travel with the team to Vancouver for their season finale, the Edmonton Journal reports.
Analysis: Test results showed no structural damage to the neck which was a relief, but with the Oilers not heading to the playoffs, there was no reason to put the defenseman at risk.
News:T.J. Brennan will play in the season finale before heading back to the AHL, The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: The Sabres aren't heading to the playoffs, but need to keep T.J. Brennan around to help round out their banged-up blue line corps. He will then join the Rochester Americans for their run in the AHL playoffs.
News:Andreas Nodl (concussion) will play against Florida on Saturday, Raleigh News & Observer writer Chip Alexander reports.
Analysis: Alexander also said Andreas Nodl would play Thursday, yet he did not. It would be best to use a different player Saturday.
News:Jaroslav Spacek is probable to be a healthy scratch Saturday night in order to make room for recent Hurricane signee Jeremy Welsh, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News and Observer reports.
Analysis: It looks as though Jaroslav Spacek, who only recently made his return to action after being sidelined by a lower body injury, will not have the chance to square off against the Panthers club that drafted him back in 1998.
Winnipeg's Jones (Personal Reasons) A Game-Time Decision
News: After missing the Jets' most recent game for personal reasons, Randy Jones is considered a game-time decision for Saturday's home contest versus Tampa Bay, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: Even if Randy Jones were a lock to participate in this one, his body of work does not suggest that his performance would be a fantasy-friendly one.
News:Ron Hainsey (foot) will miss Saturday's game against Tampa Bay, Winnipeg Sun writer Ken Wiebe reports.
Analysis:Ron Hainsey's season concludes with 10 points in 56 games. He has one year left on his contract.
News:Mathieu Darche (ear) will miss Saturday's game against Toronto, RDS.ca's Renaud P. Lavoie reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Darche's season is over, but his ear infection presumably isn't a long-term concern.
News:Wojtek Wolski enters Saturday's game against the Hurricanes with 11 points in 11 career games played against the Hurricanes.
Analysis:Wojtek Wolski typically saw a surge in production following a mid-season trade, but has gone silent having failed to register a point over his previous five games. The combination of his post-trade prowess and success against the Hurricanes makes Wolski an attractive option for owners looking to round out their lineups.
News: Ahston was assigned to the AHL on Friday, MaplesLeafs.com reports.
Analysis: It's not clear whether this means Toronto doesn't plan to use Carter Ashton against Montreal on Saturday. If this is the end of his season, he finishes with no points in 15 games.
News:Steve Sullivan (lower body) will likely be available for Pittsburgh's first playoff game, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis:Steve Sullivan is not likely to play against Philadelphia in Pittsburgh's regular season finale, on the other hand.
News:Sami Lepisto (leg) will play against Detroit on Saturday, Chicago Sun-Times writer Adam Jahns reports.
Analysis:Sami Lepisto is unlikely to make a fantasy impact, but his return gives the Chicago defense a slight boost as the playoffs approach.
News:Lubomir Visnovsky left early in the second period Thursday with an upper-body injury after being crushed into the side boards by the Oilers' Teemu Hartikainen, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: The Ducks only have one game left and are out of a playoff spot, so even if the injury is minor you should probably have an alternative plan at the ready for Saturday. If he doesn't play, Lubomir Visnovsky will finish a disappointing campaign that saw him put up just 27 points after last season's 68-point barrage.
News:Corey Tropp was assigned to the AHL on Friday, Sabres.com reports.
Analysis: It's not clear whether Buffalo plans to keep Corey Tropp in the AHL when the Sabres play Boston on Saturday.
News:Marcus Foligno was assigned to the AHL on Friday, Sabres.com reports.
Analysis: It's not clear whether Buffalo plans to bring Marcus Foligno back for Saturday's game against Boston. With 13 points in 14 games, his fantasy owners certainly hope that's the plan for Foligno.
News:Aaron Rome returned from a knee injury Thursday night, skating 19 shifts for 12 minutes of total ice time in a loss to the Flames.
Analysis: He had a hit and a blocked shot, but didn't make an impact in other areas. With just 10 points in 42 games, Aaron Rome's fantasy value is limited.
News:John Moore (ankle) missed his third straight game Thursday, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: He hasn't ruled out playing Saturday in the season finale, however. "I just have to be able to tolerate (the pain)," John Moore said. He's an important part of the Blue Jackets' future on the blue line, so don't expect the club to take any chances with him in a meaningless game.
News:Mark Eaton (upper back) won't make the trip to Columbus for Isles' season finale Saturday, Newsday's Arthur Staple reports.
Analysis:Mark Eaton finishes up the season with just four points and a minus-17 rating in 62 games, so his absence won't affect too many fantasy lineups.
News:P.A. Parenteau (ankle) won't make the trip to Columbus for Isles' season finale Saturday, Newsday's Arthur Staple reports.
Analysis:P.A. Parenteau finishes up the season with 18 goals, while notching career-highs in assists (49) and points (67) in 80 games, a total good for third on the team in scoring.
News: The Wild have re-assigned Tyler Cuma to AHL Houston, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.
Analysis:Tyler Cuma will suit up for Houston at home against the Chicago Wolves on Friday, and then it's possible he could be back for the big club's season finale Saturday.
News:Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 32 of 34 shots Thursday in a win over the Canucks.
Analysis: He played a terrific game and actually got some offensive support this time, which is always a plus. The Flames had scored one or zero goals in five of his prior seven outings; unsurprisingly, he lost six of those games.
News:Mike Cammalleri scored the game-tying goal early in the third period Thursday against the Canucks, then the eventual game-winner 15 minutes later to give him 20 goals on the year.
Analysis: With this little outburst, Mike Cammalleri reached 20 goals for the fifth time in his career. He fell one short last year, with 19. It's been a bit of a lost season for Cammalleri, between ineffectiveness, injury and a trade, but he's looked a little better back in Calgary than he did in Montreal. He'll only be 30 by the start of next season, so there's still hope of a rebound.
News:Semyon Varlamov allowed four goals on 27 shots Thursday in a loss to the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: That wasn't quite the result that Varly and the Avalanche were looking for, as Colorado's slim playoff hopes evaporated while Columbus's Cam Atkinson scored his first career hat trick. This was a most inconsistent season for Semyon Varlamov, but he's not quite 24 years old and has nowhere to go but up, assuming he stays healthy.
News:Josh Harding saved 22 of 23 through regulation and overtime Thursday against Chicago, then stopped all three shootout attempts to take home the win.
Analysis:Josh Harding's won two starts in a row (both in shootouts against the 'Hawks, though this one was much prettier) and four of six overall, but these games mean nothing, as the Wild are well outside of the Western Conference playoff picture. Harding, however, is a free agent after this year, and will likely be changing uniforms. We hear they could use a goalie down in Tampa.
News:Kyle Brodziak was invisible in Thursday's shootout win over Chicago. In 19:30 of ice time, he failed to record a point, a shot on goal or a hit, and won just five of 18 face-offs.
Analysis: If it's any excuse, he did take a skate to the face two days earlier, but most NHL players will tell you that's not much of an excuse. Kyle Brodziak has had a surprisingly productive season, with 22 goals and 22 assists, though he's burdened by a career-worst minus-15 rating.
News:Willie Mitchell picked up three assists against the Sharks on Thursday in a losing effort.
Analysis:Willie Mitchell quietly has picked up points in three of his last five games, but still has just 23 points (five goals, 18 assists) for the season.
News:Ben Bishop allowed three goals on 27 shots to take the loss Thursday against Boston.
Analysis: The massive netminder has been iffy of late, posting sub-.900 save percentages in three of his last four appearances. He hasn't won since March 16. Ben Bishop should stay ready, though; if Craig Anderson struggles in the playoffs, he could get the call.
News:Anton Khudobin made 44 saves on 45 shots in Thursday night's win over the Senators, his first NHL start of the year.
Analysis: Although he's bordering on 26 years old and has been consistently solid in the AHL -- he posted a .919 save percentage for the Providence Bruins this year -- Anton Khudobin has only played in seven NHL games (five starts), amassing a 5-1-0 record and .961 save percentage with Minnesota and now Boston. The Russian goalie could see one more start with the Bruins having locked up the No. 2 seed in the East, and he appears likely to be the backup to Tim Thomas as Boston heads into the postseason.
News:Blake Geoffrion scored Montreal's lone goal in a 2-1 shootout loss to Carolina on Thursday, the Montreal Gazette reports.
Analysis:Blake Geoffrion said a six-game run as a healthy scratch last month was the wake-up call he needed. "I was out of the lineup for a while and I have to grind a little harder, work a little harder. I have to win those battles before I get the chances, " said Geoffrion.
News:Tomas Kaberle returned the Montreal lineup Thursday night after missing 10 games with an upper-body injury.
Analysis:Tomas Kaberle had five shots on goal and blocked a shot in 19:20 in Montreal's shootout loss to Carolina.
News:Kyle Okposo found himself back in the goal column Thursday against Winnipeg, potting two in a 5-4 victory.
Analysis: The nearly 24-year-old Minnesotan winger is certainly ending his season on a high note, as he's got eight goals (and an assist) in his last eight games.
News:Brooks Orpik was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct Thursday after making a knee-on-knee hit on the Rangers' Derek Stepan.
Analysis: There could be a suspension in the works for Brooks Orpik, who's not a first-time offender. Stepan didn't return to the ice after the hit.
News:Martin Biron allowed four goals on 27 shots in Thursday's loss to Pittsburgh.
Analysis: This was not the strongest game for Martin Biron, who likely got the start due to Henrik Lundqvist's hurting arm. Don't expect to see much of Marty in the playoffs.
News:Jeff Deslauriers saved 24 of 26 shots to lead the Ducks to victory on Thursday.
Analysis:Jeff Deslauriers has battled through injury this season and played only four games, winning three and losing only one. The 27-year-old has good hockey sense but needs to stay healthy to increase his fantasy value.
News:Ryan Getzlaf scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Ducks a 3-2 victory over the Oilers on Thursday.
Analysis: Another Duck with declining numbers, Ryan Getzlaf currently sits 20 points behind his regular season tally of last season with only one game remaining.
News:Andrew Cogliano scored the Ducks' first goal in a hard fought 3-2 win over the Oilers.
Analysis: Despite playing every game this season for the Ducks, Andrew Cogliano has nine points less than last season and had not scored since Feb 26th.
News:Drew Stafford had an assist in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Flyers, bringing him to the 50-point plateau for the second time in his career.
Analysis:Drew Stafford's 26 points in 30 games since the All-Star break have allowed him to salvage his season, but he'll likely fall just short of the 52 points he recorded in just 62 games in 2010-11.
News:Tyler Ennis' four-game point streak came to an end in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Flyers.
Analysis: He went minus-2 on the night despite looking dangerous, and almost gave the Sabres the lead just before Matt Read's game-winner. With 24 points in his last 21 games, Tyler Ennis is turning heads and will no longer sneak under the radar in your league's draft next fall.
News:Ryan Miller stopped 33 of 35 shots in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Flyers.
Analysis:Ryan Miller gave his team a chance to win but the Sabres will fall short of the playoffs. His second half play has re-established him as an elite netminder, so you should feel safe holding onto him in keeper leagues.
News:Cam Ward put on a show in Carolina's final home game of the season Thursday night, denying 30 of Montreal's 31 shots, plus all three Canadien shootout attempts.
Analysis: Now with 30 wins on the season, Cam Ward will finish off his 2011-2012 campaign Saturday night in Sunrise opposite a Panthers team he has fared very well against all year.
News:Chad LaRose was the only Hurricane to score during regulation in front of a home crowd Thursday night. The Michigan native also picked up two minor penalties and five shots on net in the shootout victory over Montreal.
Analysis: Given how much time #59 missed in January and February due to injury, Chad LaRose's points production this year has been better than most anticipated. The veteran forward's shots on net volume has also been impressive this year; only Eric Staal and Jeff Skinner have tallied more for the Canes.
News:Tobias Enstrom tallied his first points in seven games Thursday night with a goal and an assist against the Islanders, bringing him to 32 on the season. Enstrom is second only to Dustin Byfuglien for both goals and assists among Jet defenders this year.
Analysis:Tobias Enstrom owners may not have gotten the offensive production they expected this year from the 27 year-old Swede given his prior two seasons in Atlanta, but it would be hard to argue that the 2003 draft selection regressed in any significant way this year. A broken collar bone forced Enstrom to miss a full quarter of the season, and #39 will finish the campaign with a positive plus/minus for just the second time in his career.
News:Chris Mason posted a feeble .821 save percentage Thursday night in Uniondale, allowing five goals off of 28 shots in a loss to the Islanders.
Analysis: Despite the rough outing, Chris Mason still maintains a .904 save percentage on the year. The veteran netminder has likely seen his last ice time of the season, as the Jets will hope to end their inaugural campaign on a high note. Regular starter Ondrej Pavelec will be in goal as Winnipeg goes for a home win over the visiting Lightning on Saturday night.
News:Sergei Gonchar, who missed Tuesday's game against Carolina due to a lower body injury, is listed in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Bruins, according to TSN.ca.
Analysis: The injury wasn't expected to be serious, and it looks like he'll get away with just one missed game as the Sens prepare for the playoffs.
News:David Steckel is likely to return from an MCL injury Thursday when the Leafs take on the Lightning, according to TSN.ca. He's missed the last three games.
Analysis: Consider David Steckel probable at the time, with him slated to skate on the third line with Tim Connolly and Mike Brown as the Leafs play out the string.
News:Jamie McGinn, who missed the previous game with a back injury, will return to the lineup Thursday against Columbus, according to The Denver Post.
Analysis: With 12 points in 15 games, Jamie McGinn has been a valuable addition for the Avs since coming over from San Jose at the trade deadline. He is expected to return to his usual spot on a line with Paul Stastny and David Jones.
News:Douglas Murray (lower body) is nearing a return, CSN's Kevin Kurz reports.
Analysis:Douglas Murray, who has missed three straight games, participated in warmups Tuesday before the Sharks game versus Dallas. Coach Todd McLellan has said that "unless we have a 100 percent completely healthy player, it makes no sense to change the lineup." With the Sharks' competing for playoff positioning keep an eye on his status over the upcoming days.
News:Jeff Petry, who took a puck in the face last week, should play Thursday against the Ducks, the Edmonton Journal reports.
Analysis:Jeff Petry's 22 points in 71 games are modest numbers, but he has helped some in leagues where hits (122) and blocks (117) count.
News:Andrew Alberts will be a healthy scratch for Thursday's tilt against the Flames, News 1130 reports.
Analysis: He had appeared in four consecutive games, but with Kevin Bieksa (undisclosed) and Aaron Rome (knee) both returning Thursday, Andrew Alberts is headed back to the press box. The big (6-5, 218) defenseman has three points in 44 games.
News:Chris Tanev will be a healthy scratch for Thursday's tilt against the Flames, News 1130 News reports.
Analysis:Chris Tanev was given a maintenance day Wednesday, but the team still hasn't reported any sort of injury. With one of the top two seeds in the Western Conference sewn up, the Canucks can afford to rest Tanev and other players with minor bumps and bruises.
News:Chet Pickard has been assigned to AHL Milwaukee, Tennessean writer Joshua Cooper reports.
Analysis:Chet Pickard heads to Milwaukee, with Admirals starter Jeremy Smith having been suspended due to his involvement in a Sunday brawl,
News:Mikhail Grabovski (leg) is still sore and won't play Thursday against the Lightning, the Maple Leafs' official site reports.
Analysis:Mikhail Grabovski remains day-to-day, as the Leafs approach Saturday's season finale against Montreal.
News:Radek Dvorak (ankle) will play Thursday against Nashville, the Stars' official site reports.
Analysis:Radek Dvorak has just one point in his last 10 games, so his return boosts the Stars' depth up front, but shouldn't affect too many fantasy owners, especially given his minus-15 rating.
News:Brandon Segal was assigned to AHL Norfolk on Thursday, Tampa Bay's official site reports.
Analysis:Brandon Segal has played in 10 games with the Lightning this season without recording a point, so his demotion shouldn't effect too many fantasy lineups.
News:Bryan Rodney was assigned to AHL Oklahoma City on Thursday, the Oilers' official site reports.
Analysis:Bryan Rodney was called up Monday on an emergency basis. He was a minus-1 in just over 13 minutes of ice time. With some of the Oilers' blue line injuries clearing up, Rodney has been reassigned to AHL Oklahoma City.
News:Jonathan Ericsson skated with Nicklas Lidstrom for the second straight game Wednesday in the Wings' shootout win over the Blues.
Analysis: In addition to firing four shots on goal, Jonathan Ericsson finished the game with a plus-1 rating and may continue to see time part of the Wings' top pairing heading into the playoffs.
News:David Desharnais picked up two assists in Wednesday night's win over Tampa Bay, giving him 60 points for the season.
Analysis: We can't imagine what watching Montreal hockey this season would have been like with the team's first line of David Desharnais, Max Pacioretty and Erik Cole. The trio combined for 10 shots, four goals, and three assists in the win. Desharnais also won 12 of his 15 faceoffs.
News:Todd Bertuzzi assisted on both of Johan Franzen's tallies to erase a two-goal third-period deficit against Brian Elliott and the Blues on Wednesday, then recorded the only goal of the shootout.
Analysis: Quite a game for the 37-year-old Todd Bertuzzi, who'd gone scoreless in three straight following a four-assist masterpiece March 26 against Columbus.
News:Sebastien Caron, making just his second NHL start of the year, allowed five goals on 25 shots in Wednesday's loss to the Canadiens.
Analysis: He'd actually looked good in limited exposure in the approximately 75 minutes of NHL hockey he'd played for the Bolts before this one, but Sebastien Caron is a middling goalie and a victim of circumstance behind the less-than-responsible Tampa defense.
News:Carl Gunnarsson suffered a separated shoulder in Toronto's overtime loss to Buffalo on Tuesday and won't suit up again this season, the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: He took a big hit from Buffalo winger Marcus Foligno in the first period and didn't return. Carl Gunnarsson should be fine for the start of next season, but the Swedish blueliner is likely to miss the world hockey championship next month.
News:Drayson Bowman has been sent down to AHL Charlotte, reports Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News and Observer.
Analysis:Drayson Bowman's send-down makes room for teammate Andreas Nodl's return. The 23-year-old will help the Checkers make a playoff run in the AHL.
News:Ian White will return to the lineup Wednesday after being a healthy scratch Sunday against Florida, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: He was minus-4 in the two games before getting scratched, but Ian White is clearly a part of the Wings' blue-line plans heading into the postseason.
News:Ryan White (illness) will not play Wednesday night against Tampa Bay, the Montreal Gazette reports.
Analysis: This will be the third game missed in the last seven days for Ryan White, who may be suffering from something other than a simple flu. Interim head coach Randy Cunneyworth was responding to questions about Carey Price's headache, when he noted White might be in the same situation. "We have a few other guys in the same boat, and I think we'll all acknowledge there's been a lot of flu and cold symptoms around that you get confused sometimes," said Cunneyworth.
News:Bryan Little tallied his 24th goal and 21st assist of 2011-2012 Tuesday night in a game that saw the visiting Jets down the Panthers in overtime.
Analysis:Bryan Little has certainly had an offensively productive season, especially given the time he missed to injury from the middle of December through early January. Nonetheless, his strong scoring totals and impressive ice time come with a certain territory; the 24 year-old is now 10 goals below even in the plus-minus column.
News:Devante Smith-Pelly scored the Ducks' fourth goal in a 5-4 loss at Rogers Arena on Tuesday.
Analysis: The 19-year-old registered a goal and an assist in the game to bring his points total to 12 in 47 games.
News:Rod Pelley scored the Ducks' third goal in a 5-4 loss to the Canucks on Tuesday.
Analysis: The goal was Rod Pelley's first since December 14 against the Coyotes. There's precious little fantasy value in the 27-year-old centerman.
News:Corey Perry scored the Ducks' second goal on the power play Tuesday, his 37th of the season.
Analysis:Corey Perry is now 13 goals behind his final tally of 50 goals last season and will be lucky to hit 40 for this campaign. The winger will always have fantasy value but the Ducks need to pick up their play to get him back to his best form.
News:Nathan Gerbe skated just 8:07 and went minus-2 in Tuesday's 6-5 overtime win over the Maple Leafs. He returned to the lineup after missing nine games with an upper-body injury.
Analysis: Coach Lindy Ruff was obviously reluctant to use Nathan Gerbe too much in such an important game, but he'll need to be in proper game shape if the Sabres qualify for the playoffs. With upcoming road games in Philadelphia and Boston, we're not about to predict any late-season heroics.
News:Milan Lucic registered a goal and an assist in Tuesday's loss to Pittsburgh, giving him 60 points for the second consecutive season.
Analysis:Milan Lucic has provided owners with solid all-around production this year, providing good scoring as well as 133 penalty minutes. Of his 60 points, however, just 13 have come on the power play. Lucic's goal totals are down, but it's another 60-point season for the power forward.
News:Marty Turco allowed five goals on 27 shots in Tuesday's loss to Pittsburgh, his first loss in his last three starts.
Analysis:Marty Turco may see one more start on the season, as the Bruins are looking to rest starter Tim Thomas now that they've already secured the Eastern Conference's second seed. Whether Turco will back up Thomas in the playoffs depends on the health of Tuuka Rask.
News:Colin Greening assisted on Ottawa's only goal in Tuesday's loss to Carolina, giving him a helper in each of the last two games.
Analysis: The speedy Colin Greening has 37 points in 80 games and is still developing as an NHL player. His name is worth remembering in keeper leagues next fall.
News:Brandon Sutter posted his second goal in three games, scoring in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Ottawa.
Analysis:Brandon Sutter probably will not crack 20 goals on the season, but his 17 on the year are serviceable for a defensive forward. Sutter's value lies in what he does for Carolina defensively. His three shorthanded goals are among the league leaders in that category.
News:Tuomo Ruutu scored his 18th goal of the season in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Ottawa, giving him three points in the last four games.
Analysis:Tuomo Ruutu's numbers are down significantly from the 57 points he notched one year ago, but his goal totals are in line with what can be expected from the versatile forward.
News:Tyler Bozak scored twice and added an assist in Tuesday's loss to Buffalo, finishing a plus-3 as well.
Analysis:Tyler Bozak scored on the only two shots he took. He has already set a career high in goals with 18, and his 47 points on the season are solid for a younger player. Bozak is definitely a player to remember in deeper leagues next season.
News:John Tavares assisted on the Islanders' only goal in Tuesday's loss to New Jersey, giving him four points in the last three games.
Analysis:John Tavares should crack the 80-point mark for the first time in his career, as he is just one away from that milestone. The question will be when to pull the trigger on Tavares next season, as he's an outstanding talent on a team that offers minimal support.
News:Matt Moulson scored his first goal in five games, tallying the Islanders' only score in Tuesday's loss to New Jersey; the goal was his 35th of the season and gives him four points in the last three games.
Analysis: Every point Matt Moulson posts gives him a new career high. The remarkably consistent winger has a shot at hitting 70 points, as he has 68 with two games remaining. Moulson has 30-plus goals in each of the last three seasons and will not be the late-round value next fall that he was this year.
News:Gregory Campbell (lower body) will play Tuesday against the Penguins, the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: He'll resume his duties centering the Bruins' energy line Tuesday after missing Sunday's game against the Rangers.
News:Jordan Caron (flu-like symptoms) will not play Tuesday against the Penguins, the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Assuming that's all that is ailing Jordan Caron -- he took a shot off the foot Sunday -- then this is good news for the Bruins, with Caron presumably no worse than day-to-day.
News:Warren Peters (upper body) will play against Nashville on Tuesday, Minneapolis Star Tribune writer Michael Russo reports.
Analysis: With five points on the year, Warren Peters' return means little beyond the depth he provides Minnesota.
News: Almong was assigned to the AHL on Tuesday, Minneapolis Star Tribune writer Michael Russo reports.
Analysis:Cody Almond was no longer needed because Warren Peters is ready to play.
News:Eric Nystrom (leg) will play against San Jose on Tuesday, ESPN Dallas' Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis:Eric Nystrom's 21 points present limited fantasy utility, but he'll be there for those who can use him Tuesday.
News:Philip Larsen (undisclosed) is questionable for Tuesday's game against San Jose, ESPN Dallas's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: It's not clear what Philip Larsen's issue is. We'll watch for more info.
News: Montreal recalled Robert Mayer on Tuesday, Montreal Gazette writer Dave Stubbs reports.
Analysis:Robert Mayer will serve as backup to Peter Budaj on Wednesday.
News:Mike Weber (upper body) will take the ice Tuesday night against Toronto, according to John Vogl of the Buffalo News.
Analysis: The Sabres are extremely thin on defense with Christian Ehrhoff out and two call-ups from Rochester manning the blue line. Mike Weber's more physical, stay-at-home style should help Tuesday night with Buffalo's season on the line.
News:Michael Frolik split time with Jimmy Hayes on the Blackhawks' first line on Sunday with Andrew Brunette out with a foot injury, Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Analysis: Despite the move up to the first line, Michael Frolik only had a little more than 10 minutes of ice time and had three shots on goal. Hayes only had 12 minutes of ice time. Frolik has been a disappointment since being acquired from the Panthers last season. He accumulated 11 goals and 27 assists between Florida and the Blackhawks during the 2010-11 season in 80 games. Frolik has only scored five goals and registered nine assists this season heading into Thursday.
News:Vincent Lecavalier was held scoreless for the third straight game Monday since returning from a broken hand. He skated 16:09 in Tampa Bay's win over Washington.
Analysis: There's obviously some rust here even though he's not absurdly below his average ice time for the season, plus he's still getting some power play time. Maybe he can get on the scoreboard in one of the team's last two games, but he's going to be under 55 points for the second straight season, not quite what you'd expect from one of the NHL's highest paid players.
News:Victor Hedman scored one of Tampa Bay's four goals in Monday's win over Washington, extending a points streak to four games.
Analysis:Victor Hedman has five points in the last four games, but is unlikely to crack the 26-point mark he established last season. He's an intriguing late-round pick for next year, even moreso if Tampa Bay does not call up Mark Barberio, who has been lighting up the AHL this season.
News:Nate Thompson posted two assists in Monday's win over Washington, giving him 15 points on the season.
Analysis:Nate Thompson had missed some time with an upper body injury, but returned to action this past weekend. Odds are he will not have many one-point nights, let alone two-point nights, the remainder of the season.
News: The Oilers plan on using the last three games of the season to judge Cam Barker, according to Edmonton Journal.
Analysis:Cam Barker only signed a one-year deal with Edmonton so these next three games will determine whether or not he has a future with the Oilers.
News:Duncan Keith's five-game suspension came to an end with Sunday's shootout loss to the Wild.
Analysis: You'll get a full week out of him if you're playing for a championship this week, though unfortunately the Blackhawks are one of only three teams with a two-game slate in weekly formats.
News:Nikolai Kulemin continues to skate prior to practice (finger), but as per coach Randy Carlyle's comments, will not return this season, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: Assuming that's the case, Nikolai Kulemin will finish up a disappointing season with a 7-21-28 line in 70 games, less than half of his 57-point output from last season.
News:Kyle Wellwood has a broken foot and will not play any more games this season, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: With the Jets out of the playoffs, Kyle Wellwood should have plenty of time to heal up for next season, though a broken foot will surely set back his offseason training program. He'll finish 2011-12 with his best season, putting up a career-high 47 points, 10 of which came on the power play. Somehow he found a way to score 18 goals while just taking 93 shots all season.
News:Kyle Quincey has been suspended one game for an elbow to the head of Florida's Tomas Kopecky, the Red Wings' official Twitter account reports.
Analysis:Kyle Quincey earned a five-minute game misconduct major for the hit, so there was possibility of discipline from the get-go. He'll serve the suspension Wednesday and will be eligible to return Thursday.
News:Tanner Glass broke a bone in his right foot Friday and is done for the season, the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis:Tanner Glass finishes up with a modest total of 16 points in 78 games, but he did make a mark on the Jets' checking line by recording a team-high 246 hits.
News:Dennis Seidenberg (leg wound infection) scored a goal in his return to action Sunday.
Analysis:Dennis Seidenberg logged a healthy 24:53 of ice time Sunday, suggesting that he's fine going forward after sitting out a couple of game due to an infected cut on his leg.
News:Ales Hemsky (shoulder) could play Monday against the Kings, the Oilers' official site reports.
Analysis: Coach Tom Renney noted Monday that "Ales Hemsky is doing fine and will take warm-ups and wants to play tonight, I don't see that being a problem." There's still some doubt concerning Hemsky's status Monday, but based on Renney's comments there are apparently no plans to shut Hemsky down.
News:Matt Ellis is once again healthy after missing the last 10 games with a knee injury, reports Sabres.com.
Analysis: Coach Lindy Ruff didn't mention if he will be playing Tuesday against the Leafs, but his counting stats (three goals, five assists, 25 PIMs) don't suggest any impending fantasy impact.
News: The Jets have recalled Patrice Cormier from their AHL affiliate in St. John's, Kirk Penton of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: Now with Winnipeg officially eliminated from playoff contention, it looks as though Patrice Cormier will spell an injured Kyle Wellwood down the stretch.
News:Andrei Markov played in back-to-back games for the first time since returning from his knee injury when he skated against the Capitals on Saturday.
Analysis: He not only played in both ends of the back-to-back, but he increased his minutes to 21:34 on Saturday after playing 17:07 on Friday. It might be too late in the fantasy season for Andrei Markov to help anyone, but look for his value to be suppressed in the auctions/drafts next season.
News:Marc-Andre Gragnani netted his first goal as a Canuck in Saturday's win over the Flames.
Analysis:Marc-Andre Gragnani has seen his role increase over the past couple of games with Kevin Bieksa out. The 25-year-old has picked up points in back-to-back games and could see a slightly expanded role as the Canucks try to get all of their veterans ready for the playoffs.
Stars' Petersen Plays After Being Healthy Scratch For Past 15
News:Toby Petersen played Saturday against San Jose after being a healthy scratch for the past 15 games, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis:Toby Petersen played on the Stars' fourth line and logged just 4:46 minutes of ice time. The 33-year-old has posted five points (2G, 3A) in his 39 games this year, and at this point, it's hard to imagine Petersen will ever become fantasy relevant.
News:Steve Kampfer will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Tom Gilbert will get more ice time as a result.
News:Tom Wandell has now missed four straight games with an undisclosed illness, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: There were no specifics as to what exactly is keeping Tom Wandell out, but with the Stars in danger of missing the playoffs, there's a chance he returns at less than 100%. With just 15 points in 70 games, he's probably not someone on who you rely, but if you're desperate enough here at the end, you can keep watch.
News: After missing the last five games with an abdominal injury, Mark Fistric returned to the lineup on Friday, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: If you were worried about getting Mark Fistric back in your lineup here at the end of the season, you're probably not winning your league this year. With just one point in 58 games and just 37 PIMs, he isn't someone that should even be on a fantasy roster.
News: The Capitals placed John Erskine, who recently suffered a lower body injury, on injured reserve according to TSN.ca.
