Pens' Malkin Pays Immediate Dividends

News: Evgeni Malkin assisted on a pair of power-play goals Saturday in his return after missing Pittsburgh's last six games.
Analysis: The Pens won just one game with Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist out. Malkin led all Pittsburgh forwards with 21:15 TOI, showing that he's adequately recovered from his lower-body injury.

Pens' Malkin To Play Saturday

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) will return to the lineup Saturday against the Coyotes, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: After experiencing no further soreness with his lower-body injury overnight, Evgeni Malkin will be cleared to play for the first time in six games. The Pens struggled mightily to generate offense in his absence, and with Patric Hornqvist (undisclosed) also returning to the lineup Saturday, the team should be able to get back on track against the Coyotes and goalie Mike Smith, who currently sits on a 3.16 GAA and .902 save percentage for the season. Fantasy owners can feel comfortable activating Malkin in his first game back from the injury.

Pens' Malkin Game-Time Decision Saturday

News: Coach Mike Johnston said Evgeni Malkin (lower body) took full contact during Friday's practice and labeled him as a game-time decision for Saturday's game against Phoenix.
Analysis: Johnston added that he would talk to Pittsburgh's training staff to gather further information on Evgeni Malkin. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the Penguins coach sounded confident his star forward would return to the lineup Saturday.

Pens' Malkin Could Be Back Saturday

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) felt strong after participating in Friday's practice and believes there's a "great chance" he'll be able to play Saturday against the Coyotes.
Analysis: The Penguins could surely use Evgeni Malkin back in their lineup, as the team has lost five of the last six games the center has missed while scoring a total of seven goals. While Malkin said he'll likely be cleared to play if he reports no pain or soreness over night, due to the 1:00 ET start time of Saturday's match, his availability may not be clarified until pregame warmups.

Pens' Malkin Out Another Game

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) won't travel with the team to Raleigh for Thursday's game against the Hurricanes, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Though Evgeni Malkin will be absent for a sixth consecutive game, he was able to return to the ice Wednesday morning for another practice session. Coach Mike Johnston remains optimistic that the star center will be available for one or both of the Penguins' games over the weekend.

Penguins' Malkin Still Sidelined

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) is not slated to play Tuesday against the Blues.
Analysis: Per the report, coach Mike Johnston indicates that the Penguins plan to dress seven defensemen Tuesday, with both Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist still out.

Pens' Malkin (Lower Body) Uncertain For Tuesday

News: Penguins coach Mike Johnston said Sunday that Evgeni Malkin (lower body) is about 50-50 or a bit worse to return for Tuesday's game against the Blues, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin, who has missed the last four games, was a limited participant at Sunday's practice. Coach Mike Johnston said Malkin will likely return before Patric Hornqvist (undisclosed), who the coach all but ruled out for Tuesday's game.

Penguins' Malkin Practices

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) was present for practice Sunday.
Analysis: It's unclear how close to a return to action Evgeni Malkin is, but his presence on the ice Sunday offers hope that the forward could suit up at some point this coming week, in the absence of any setbacks.

Pens' Malkin Feeling Better, Skating

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) is progressing and skating on his own, according to coach Mike Johnston, ROOT Sports in Pittsburgh reports.
Analysis: Johnston gave no timetable for Evgeni Malkin's return, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him skate in three of Pittsburgh's four games in the coming week, starting with Thursday's tilt in Carolina.

Pens' Malkin To Skip Two-Game Road Trip

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) will not join the Penguins for the rest of their three-game road trip ending Saturday in Arizona.
Analysis: The news doesn't come as much of a surprise after GM Jim Rutherford speculated Monday that Evgeni Malkin would be unavailable for 1-to-2 weeks after suffering the lower-body injury in last Saturday's loss to the Bruins. On a positive note, coach Mike Johnston indicated Malkin is making progress and should be on track to resume skating with the rest of the team when it returns from the trip Sunday.

Penguins' Malkin Sidelined

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) is expected to miss one-to-two weeks, according to ESPN's Katie Strang.
Analysis: Per NHL.com, GM Jim Rutherford relayed Monday that Evgeni Malkin is probably looking at missing seven-to-14 days, though Rutherford added that such an estimate is "a hard read because (Malkin) heals so quick." Either way, it appears safe to rule Malkin out for Tuesday's game against New Jersey, at a minimum.

Penguins' Malkin Day-To-Day

News: Evgeni Malkin (undisclosed injury) is day-to-day, according to coach Mike Johnston.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin appears to be unlikely to play Tuesday against New Jersey, though a return during the Penguins' upcoming three-game road trip is plausible for the forward.

Pens' Malkin (Undisclosed) Out Sunday

News: Coach Mike Johnston indicated Evgeni Malkin (undisclosed) won't play Sunday against the Red Wings, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin exited Saturday's game early with the injury, and it appears it will cost him Sunday's contest as well. The team hasn't disclosed the exact nature of the injury this point, but coach Johnston suggested the possibility of his return Sunday. While that isn't the case, it likely indicates the injury is a minor one.

Pens' Malkin Leaves With Apparent Injury

News: Evgeni Malkin suffered an apparent injury in the first period of Saturday's game against the Bruins, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. He didn't return for the start of the second or third period and has likely been ruled out.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin headed to the locker room shortly after his first shift of the game following a hit from the Bruins' Chris Kelly. While Malkin initially returned to the ice, he skated only five shifts during the afternoon before exiting again. The Penguins were forced to scratch Sidney Crosby due to an undisclosed issue before the game, so Malkin's absence forced the Penguins to play much of the contest without their top two centers. It's unclear if either player will be available for Sunday's tilt with the Red Wings.

Pens' Malkin Might Be Available Sunday

News: Coach Mike Johnston said after Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Bruins that he thinks Evgeni Malkin (undisclosed) might be available for Sunday's match against the Red Wings, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: With Sidney Crosby (illness) getting scratched just minutes before Saturday's puck drop and Evgeni Malkin seeing only 4:15 in ice time before departing, it's no surprise the Penguins failed to find the net with their top two playmakers unavailable. Though Johnston didn't offer specifics on Malkin's injury, it seems that at the moment, the team believes his issue is minor. However, because of the afternoon start time of Sunday's game, Malkin's status likely won't be officially announced until after pregame warmups, making him a risky selection in daily lineups.

Two More Points For Pens' Malkin

News: Evgeni Malkin tallied a goal and handed out an assist in Friday's triumph over the Ducks.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin finished on the positive side of the plus/minus ledger for the first time in four games, but he's more than made up for it with the barrage of points he's provided over the last two-plus weeks. The star center is riding a seven-game point streak, during which he's rattled off seven goals and seven assists. Keep him active and continue to enjoy the ride.

Pens' Malkin Continues Rampage

News: Evgeni Malkin potted a pair of goals and added an assist Sunday against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Two of his points, including a goal and an assist, came courtesy of the power play. Evgeni Malkin now has five goals and 10 points in his last five contests, moving to within one point of the NHL lead. Malkin and teammate Sidney Crosby both have 64 points.

Pens' Malkin With Second Straight Three-Point Game

News: Evgeni Malkin tallied three assists -- including one on the power play -- in a 4-3 victory over Washington on Wednesday.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin was arguably the best player on the ice in a matchup featuring some of the league's brightest stars. The centerman now has three goals and eight points during a four-game point streak. For the season, Malkin has scored 24 goals and 61 points in 56 contests.

Malkin Leads Pens To Sunday Victory

News: Evgeni Malkin scored two goals and added a power-play assist Sunday, registering his first three-point game since Nov. 26.
Analysis: Fantasy owners are giving thanks for the much-needed production from Evgeni Malkin, who now has three goals and five points during a three-game point streak. Both of his goals came on backhanders and his first tally came with 27 ticks remaining in the second period -- a goal which stood as Malkin's fourth game-winner of the season.

Malkin Scores Pens' Lone Goal Thursday

News: Evgeni Malkin scored his third goal in his last eight games Thursday.
Analysis: The five shots on goal represent his highest total since returning from a groin injury. Evgeni Malkin played the left point on Pittsburgh's No. 1 power play late in the third period as the team deployed both Malkin and Sidney Crosby together. Surprisingly, the star centerman is still looking for his first assist since Jan. 20.

Pens' Malkin Looking To Get Off The Snide

News: Evgeni Malkin has two points in seven games since returning from a groin injury.
Analysis: The centerman also holds a disastrous 39-64 mark (37.9 percent) in the faceoff circle over that span. Evgeni Malkin seems set with linemates Blake Comeau and Patric Hornqvist at even strength, but he's toiled on the team's No. 2 PP unit the last two games. He'll look for a turnaround game Thursday versus the Blue Jackets, against whom he's scored three goals and 10 points in 8 career contests.

Malkin Serves On Pens' Second Power-Play On Sunday

News: The Penguins split up Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on the top power-play unit against the Blackhawks, with Malkin moving to a second unit.
Analysis: Coach Mike Johnston is trying anything to jumpstart a power play that scored more goals (19) in its first 11 games than in its last 45 (17). Evgeni Malkin, who has netted only two goals in six games since returning from a groin injury, looked invisible at times Sunday in Chicago.

Pens' Malkin Finding His Touch?

News: Evgeni Malkin scored his second goal in five games Thursday since returning from a groin injury.
Analysis: The line of Evgeni Malkin, Blake Comeau and Patric Hornqvist has stuck together for two games and looked good. Malkin has just four power-play points (all assists) in his last 24 games, however, as the team's power play continues to struggle. He sits 11th in scoring with 53 points (21G, 22A) in 50 games.

Pens' Malkin Scores In Win

News: Evgeni Malkin potted a goal in Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Oilers.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin is once again a 20-goal scorer, and currently ranks sixth in the NHL with 52 points through 46 games. Wednesday's tally was also the game winning goal, which was Malkin's third on the season.

Pens' Malkin With Game-Winner Wednesday

News: Evgeni Malkin returned from a groin injury Wednesday and netted his 20th goal of the season in a 2-0 win against the Oilers.
Analysis: Two of his three game-winning goals in 2014-15 have come in shutouts. Pittsburgh did not receive one power-play opportunity, limiting Evgeni Malkin's chances to do further damage. He set up linemate, Mark Arcobello, on numerous occasions without result. Hopefully the Russian will eventually play with forwards better suited for his skill level.
