Pens' Malkin Out For Early Part Of Camp

News: Evgeni Malkin will be held out of the early stages of training camp after he suffered an undisclosed injury prior to camp.
Analysis: Sidney Crosby is similarly being held out in the early going, so it's more than likely just the case where the organization wants to keep its two stars fresh for the start of the regular season. Evgeni Malkin's draft stock shouldn't be affected by the injury, unless news surfaces that the issue is more severe than the Penguins are letting on. The 28-year-old will have to adjust to new coach Mike Johnston's preferred system of using his forwards in pairs rather than lines, but he's still poised to deliver high-end production from the center spot.

Pens' Malkin Heading To Worlds

News: Evgeni Malkin will play for the Russian national team at the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.
Analysis: The Penguins gave their consent for the center to head to the Worlds, and he's expected to fly to Minsk on Saturday, joining the national team on Sunday. He could be on the ice as early as Sunday night's game against Germany.

Malkin, Pens Get Eliminated

News: Evgeni Malkin picked up an assist in Tuesday's Game 7 against the Rangers, but it came on Pittsburgh's only goal in the season-ending 2-1 loss.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin can't really be blamed for the series loss, as he scored at a point-per-game pace, though it won't go unnoticed in Pittsburgh that he went without a power-play point in the seven games.

Malkin, Pens Cruise

News: Evgeni Malkin grabbed a goal and an assist in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Rangers in Game 4 of the Metropolitan Division final, giving him eight points in the last five games.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin has made up for his being quiet through most of the first round with an impressive effort on the scoresheet as the Penguins find themselves a game away from reaching the Eastern Conference Final for the second straight season. Malkin grabbed the opening goal on Wednesday and assisted on the Pens' final goal, both vital situations in the game. He has seen some time with Sidney Crosby at even strength the last several games, a trend the Penguins likely will continue as long as they're winning.

Malkin Big For Pittsburgh Sunday

News: With a goal and an assist, Evgeni Malkin compiled his second multi-point effort in three games Sunday against the Rangers.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin sealed the win with an empty-net goal, totaled a game-high four takeaways and registered five shots -- second on the Pens behind Sidney Crosby. Malkin's 21:30 TOI led all Pittsburgh forwards. He's back-checking and giving the overall effort the Pens need to compete against New York.

Malkin On Board In Pens Loss

News: Evgeni Malkin collected an assist in Friday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Rangers in Game 1 of their Atlantic Division finals series, giving him four points in the last two games.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin looked as if he had a goal on Pittsburgh's second tally, but he just helped by smacking Henrik Lundqvist's glove. Geno had been rather quiet in the playoffs before potting a hat trick in the series-clinching victory over Columbus last Monday. He's been seeing time at even strength with Sidney Crosby and will need to be one of the team's best players as the Pens look to even up the series.

Malkin Leads Pens To Series' Win Monday

News: Evgeni Malkin snapped a nine-game goal-less stretch in the postseason with a hat trick in Monday's 4-3 win over Columbus.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin potted one of his three goals on the power play and led his team with six shots on goal. He had just four assists in the first five games of the series, but came up big when he was needed most.

Pens' Malkin Still Looking For First Playoff Goal

News: Evgeni Malkin wasn't much of a factor in Saturday's win, going pointless on two shots. He finished with four giveaways and one takeaway in the 3-1 victory against Columbus.
Analysis: The Penguins paired Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby together in an effort to get their stars going. Each tied for the team lead in power-play time, compiling 4:02 TOI. Unfortunately for Malkin owners, the big forward was unable to muster any offense. The unit's third linemate, Chris Kunitz, had a big game, however, and it wouldn't be surprising to see the line stick together for Game 6.

Pens' Malkin In Search Of Better Luck

News: Evgeni Malkin is flummoxed by his inability to score goals in the playoffs. "I come to a game and always I try to score," Malkin told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "It's just bad luck maybe, I don't know. But every game I try my hardest and try to score."
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin hasn't scored in his last eight playoff games, dating back to a four-game series loss to Boston in 2012-13. The center does have four assists against the Blue Jackets, but the Pens are looking for more from their Conn Smythe Award winner.

Pens' Malkin Adds Two Helpers In Win

News: Evgeni Malkin picked up two assists Wednesday against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin winced in pain on one of his very first shifts of the game after a heavy hit by Fedor Tyutin -- Wednesday was his first game action since March 23. Fortunately, he stayed in the game, totaling 17:31 TOI. The Pens held serve in Game 1 as Malkin continued to prove that he is one of the most productive postseason players in the game. With 97 points in 83 career playoff games, expect Malkin to continue to produce at a high rate moving forward.

Pens' Malkin Expected Back For Game 1

News: Evgeni Malkin (foot) is expected back in the lineup for Game 1 of the Penguins' first-round series with the Blue Jackets, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin missed the final 11 games of the regular season while nursing the foot injury, but after getting back on the ice for the last several days, he should be fully ready to contribute for the Penguins. He'll assume his usual spot as the second-line center.

Pens' Malkin At Morning Skate

News: Evgeni Malkin (foot) took part in line rushes during Wednesday's morning skate, Pens Inside Scoop reports.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin was back on the ice for Tuesday's practice as well, so all signs point toward him being in the lineup for Thursday's Game 1.

Penguins' Malkin Practices

News: Evgeni Malkin (foot) was present for Tuesday's practice.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin, who skated on a line with Jussi Jokinen and James Neal during Tuesday's practice, also saw first-unit power play work. Assuming no setbacks, Malkin's presence at practice Tuesday bodes well for his chances of playing Wednesday against the Blue Jackets.

Pens' Malkin (Foot) Takes Ice In Optional Skate

News: Evgeni Malkin (foot) was on the ice for Sunday morning's optional skate, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin also skated before the Wednesday and Friday practices but isn't apparently near a return. The fact that he is participating in the skates is encouraging, however, and he could return during the playoffs if the team stays alive long enough.

Pens' Malkin Still Out

News: Evgeni Malkin (foot) skated before Friday's practice but doesn't appear close to returning to game action, the Penguins' website reports.
Analysis: Pens coach Dan Bylsma weaved his way around Evgeni Malkin's possible return. "I think really what's more important is the health of the player than it is to play a game ... The health of the player is the most important thing," Bylsma said. "If that's rest to get before the playoffs, that will be it. If we have the opportunity to get him back in a game, we'll take it, but we're not going to rush him back just to get that 60 minutes of hockey." Malkin hasn't played since suffering a broken foot March 23 against St. Louis.

Pens' Malkin Skates

News: Evgeni Malkin (foot) skated before practice Wednesday, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin won't be in the lineup Wednesday against the Red Wings, but there's still a chance he could return before the end of the regular season. The center racked up 23 goals and 49 assists in 60 games before getting hurt.

Pens' Malkin Out With Foot Injury

News: Evgeni Malkin will miss the next two-to-three weeks with a foot injury, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: This is a big blow to Evgeni Malkin's fantasy owners, as the center had recorded six points in his last three games and is, of course, one of the game's premier scorers. With this timeline, it appears that Malkin could potentially miss the rest of the regular season.

Penguins' Malkin Not At Tuesday Morning Skate

News: Evgeni Malkin (unspecified reason) was not present for Tuesday's morning skate.
Analysis: It remains to be seen if Evgeni Malkin's absence was maintenance-related, but either way, owners will want to track his status for Tuesday night's game against the Coyotes.

Pens` Malkin Has Huge Afternoon Saturday

News: Evgeni Malkin had a hand in all four Penguins goals Saturday, scoring twice and adding two assists as the Penguins beat the Lightning 4-3 in overtime. It was his second consecutive two-goal game and second four-point effort of the season.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin's four-point explosion -- including three on the power play -- at the expense of the Lightning brought his point total to 35 in 27 games against Tampa, who have no doubt seen enough of the Russian superstar. He came out with a purpose after taking a brutal butt-end to the midsection last game by the Red Wings' David Legwand. No. 71 also put an end to his three-game PIM streak, showing better poise and discipline en route to leading his team to victory. Geno now has 72 points in 59 games and for the time being, is tied with Tyler Seguin for fifth in overall scoring.

Thursday Twice As Nice For Pens' Malkin

News: Evgeni Malkin passed the 20-goal mark Thursday, scoring two times -- including once on the power play -- in a 5-4 OT loss in Detroit.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin avoided serious injury after he was butt-ended by the stick of the Red Wings' David Legwand. The Pittsburgh center remained down on the ice for a minute, but returned shortly thereafter. Malkin's two-goal night tripled his post-Olympic goal total, as he had tallied just once in 10 games since Sochi prior to Thursday.

Goal Scoring Down For Pens' Malkin

News: Evgeni Malkin was held pointless Sunday, though he finished plus-2 with a team-high five shots on goal.
Analysis: With the exception of a retaliatory penalty against Philly's Zac Rinaldo, Evgeni Malkin played a solid game. Of course, fantasy owners are looking production from the former Art Ross Trophy winner and the Russian centerman has one goal and seven assists in his last nine games.

Pens & Malkin Miss Saturday Opportunity

News: Evgeni Malkin finished minus-2 with one shot and three giveaways in Saturday's 4-0 loss to Philadelphia.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin's first game without linemate James Neal (concussion) didn't go well. The entire team looked disinterested Saturday and Malkin was no different. It wasn't until Philly's Zac Rinaldo started running players late in the third period before Malkin showed passion. Malkin skated with Sidney Crosby for copious amounts of time Saturday, but the two were unable to generate any offense.

Goal For Pens Is To Have Malkin Score

News: Evgeni Malkin has one goal and seven assists in seven games since returning from the Olympics.
Analysis: With linemate James Neal (concussion) replaced in the lineup by rookie Brian Gibbons, the Penguins will need Evgeni Malkin to step up in the goal-scoring department -- something which could pay off for fantasy owners. Malkin has 22 goals and 58 points in 44 career contests against Philly, Pittsburgh's back-to-back opponent over the weekend.

Pens' Malkin Carves Up Ducks

News: Evgeni Malkin delivered a goal and an assist in Friday's shootout win over the Ducks.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin paced the Penguins with a team-leading five shots on goal in the victory, ultimately tying the game up with a power-play goal with 11 minutes remaining in the third period. Malkin doesn't seem to be lagging at all following a disappointing showing for Russia in the Olympics, as he's racked up a goal and five assists in his five games since the break.

Pens' Malkin Back With Vengeance

News: Evgeni Malkin picked up a pair of helpers in Thursday's shootout loss to Montreal, pushing his point streak to six games.
Analysis: Those first five contests came before the Olympics, in which Evgeni Malkin and Team Russia took a hugely disappointing fall to Finland before the medal round. Look for Geno to play with a little extra edge the rest of the way as he tries to make up for his dashed Olympic hopes by bringing home a Stanley Cup instead.
