Pens' Malkin Adds Two Helpers In Win

News: Evgeni Malkin picked up two assists Wednesday against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin winced in pain on one of his very first shifts of the game after a heavy hit by Fedor Tyutin -- Wednesday was his first game action since March 23. Fortunately, he stayed in the game, totaling 17:31 TOI. The Pens held serve in Game 1 as Malkin continued to prove that he is one of the most productive postseason players in the game. With 97 points in 83 career playoff games, expect Malkin to continue to produce at a high rate moving forward.

Pens' Malkin Expected Back For Game 1

News: Evgeni Malkin (foot) is expected back in the lineup for Game 1 of the Penguins' first-round series with the Blue Jackets, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin missed the final 11 games of the regular season while nursing the foot injury, but after getting back on the ice for the last several days, he should be fully ready to contribute for the Penguins. He'll assume his usual spot as the second-line center.

Pens' Malkin At Morning Skate

News: Evgeni Malkin (foot) took part in line rushes during Wednesday's morning skate, Pens Inside Scoop reports.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin was back on the ice for Tuesday's practice as well, so all signs point toward him being in the lineup for Thursday's Game 1.

Penguins' Malkin Practices

News: Evgeni Malkin (foot) was present for Tuesday's practice.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin, who skated on a line with Jussi Jokinen and James Neal during Tuesday's practice, also saw first-unit power play work. Assuming no setbacks, Malkin's presence at practice Tuesday bodes well for his chances of playing Wednesday against the Blue Jackets.

Pens' Malkin (Foot) Takes Ice In Optional Skate

News: Evgeni Malkin (foot) was on the ice for Sunday morning's optional skate, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin also skated before the Wednesday and Friday practices but isn't apparently near a return. The fact that he is participating in the skates is encouraging, however, and he could return during the playoffs if the team stays alive long enough.

Pens' Malkin Still Out

News: Evgeni Malkin (foot) skated before Friday's practice but doesn't appear close to returning to game action, the Penguins' website reports.
Analysis: Pens coach Dan Bylsma weaved his way around Evgeni Malkin's possible return. "I think really what's more important is the health of the player than it is to play a game ... The health of the player is the most important thing," Bylsma said. "If that's rest to get before the playoffs, that will be it. If we have the opportunity to get him back in a game, we'll take it, but we're not going to rush him back just to get that 60 minutes of hockey." Malkin hasn't played since suffering a broken foot March 23 against St. Louis.

Pens' Malkin Skates

News: Evgeni Malkin (foot) skated before practice Wednesday, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin won't be in the lineup Wednesday against the Red Wings, but there's still a chance he could return before the end of the regular season. The center racked up 23 goals and 49 assists in 60 games before getting hurt.

Pens' Malkin Out With Foot Injury

News: Evgeni Malkin will miss the next two-to-three weeks with a foot injury, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: This is a big blow to Evgeni Malkin's fantasy owners, as the center had recorded six points in his last three games and is, of course, one of the game's premier scorers. With this timeline, it appears that Malkin could potentially miss the rest of the regular season.

Penguins' Malkin Not At Tuesday Morning Skate

News: Evgeni Malkin (unspecified reason) was not present for Tuesday's morning skate.
Analysis: It remains to be seen if Evgeni Malkin's absence was maintenance-related, but either way, owners will want to track his status for Tuesday night's game against the Coyotes.

Pens` Malkin Has Huge Afternoon Saturday

News: Evgeni Malkin had a hand in all four Penguins goals Saturday, scoring twice and adding two assists as the Penguins beat the Lightning 4-3 in overtime. It was his second consecutive two-goal game and second four-point effort of the season.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin's four-point explosion -- including three on the power play -- at the expense of the Lightning brought his point total to 35 in 27 games against Tampa, who have no doubt seen enough of the Russian superstar. He came out with a purpose after taking a brutal butt-end to the midsection last game by the Red Wings' David Legwand. No. 71 also put an end to his three-game PIM streak, showing better poise and discipline en route to leading his team to victory. Geno now has 72 points in 59 games and for the time being, is tied with Tyler Seguin for fifth in overall scoring.

Thursday Twice As Nice For Pens' Malkin

News: Evgeni Malkin passed the 20-goal mark Thursday, scoring two times -- including once on the power play -- in a 5-4 OT loss in Detroit.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin avoided serious injury after he was butt-ended by the stick of the Red Wings' David Legwand. The Pittsburgh center remained down on the ice for a minute, but returned shortly thereafter. Malkin's two-goal night tripled his post-Olympic goal total, as he had tallied just once in 10 games since Sochi prior to Thursday.

Goal Scoring Down For Pens' Malkin

News: Evgeni Malkin was held pointless Sunday, though he finished plus-2 with a team-high five shots on goal.
Analysis: With the exception of a retaliatory penalty against Philly's Zac Rinaldo, Evgeni Malkin played a solid game. Of course, fantasy owners are looking production from the former Art Ross Trophy winner and the Russian centerman has one goal and seven assists in his last nine games.

Pens & Malkin Miss Saturday Opportunity

News: Evgeni Malkin finished minus-2 with one shot and three giveaways in Saturday's 4-0 loss to Philadelphia.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin's first game without linemate James Neal (concussion) didn't go well. The entire team looked disinterested Saturday and Malkin was no different. It wasn't until Philly's Zac Rinaldo started running players late in the third period before Malkin showed passion. Malkin skated with Sidney Crosby for copious amounts of time Saturday, but the two were unable to generate any offense.

Goal For Pens Is To Have Malkin Score

News: Evgeni Malkin has one goal and seven assists in seven games since returning from the Olympics.
Analysis: With linemate James Neal (concussion) replaced in the lineup by rookie Brian Gibbons, the Penguins will need Evgeni Malkin to step up in the goal-scoring department -- something which could pay off for fantasy owners. Malkin has 22 goals and 58 points in 44 career contests against Philly, Pittsburgh's back-to-back opponent over the weekend.

Pens' Malkin Carves Up Ducks

News: Evgeni Malkin delivered a goal and an assist in Friday's shootout win over the Ducks.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin paced the Penguins with a team-leading five shots on goal in the victory, ultimately tying the game up with a power-play goal with 11 minutes remaining in the third period. Malkin doesn't seem to be lagging at all following a disappointing showing for Russia in the Olympics, as he's racked up a goal and five assists in his five games since the break.

Pens' Malkin Back With Vengeance

News: Evgeni Malkin picked up a pair of helpers in Thursday's shootout loss to Montreal, pushing his point streak to six games.
Analysis: Those first five contests came before the Olympics, in which Evgeni Malkin and Team Russia took a hugely disappointing fall to Finland before the medal round. Look for Geno to play with a little extra edge the rest of the way as he tries to make up for his dashed Olympic hopes by bringing home a Stanley Cup instead.

Pens' Malkin Sees Prime Time Ice

News: Evgeni Malkin saw 7:33 TOI of power-play ice time -- the same total as Sidney Crosby -- and picked up one of his two helpers on the man-advantage Thursday against Montreal.
Analysis: The center ranks fifth in the NHL with 18 power-play assists despite missing 12 of Pittsburgh's 60 games. After picking up 10 points in his first 13 games, the Russian has produced a more Evgeni Malkin-like 47 points in his last 38 contests.

Pens' Malkin: Three-Point Game In Sochi Opener

News: Evgeni Malkin had a goal and two assists for the Russian squad in their 5-2 victory over Slovenia on Thursday.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin showed good rapport with Alexander Ovechkin in this one, as both players assisted on their respective goals early in the first period. Playing regularly with a singular talent like Sidney Crosby probably makes for an easy adjustment to Ovechkin's game.

Pens' Malkin Hot For Sochi

News: Evgeni Malkin scored his 18th goal Friday -- a power-play effort, giving him seven goals in the last 10 games.
Analysis: The Russian enters the Sochi Olympics on a high note. Evgeni Malkin also beat Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist in the shootout with a nifty five-hole shot -- further proof he's on top of his game.

Pens' Malkin Adds Two Points Wednesday

News: Evgeni Malkin scored his 17th goal of the season and added an assist in Wednesday's game against the Sabres.

Pens' Malkin Scores Saturday

News: Evgeni Malkin scored his 15th goal of the season Saturday in Phoenix and added four penalty minutes against the Coyotes.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin, who's now scored in back-to-back games, potted only three goals in his first 22 contests. He showed his emotional side with the Pens down in the third period, swearing profusely at the refs and throwing an uppercut at Oliver Ekman-Larsson -- something that's haunted him in recent postseason losses.

Pens' Malkin Strong Wednesday

News: Evgeni Malkin notched his 13th goal and added an assist Wednesday, finishing plus-3 against Montreal.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin was named the game's No. 1 star for his efforts. The center will look to add to his point total Thursday, as the Pens travel to Dallas. Malkin has 26 points in 19 road games thus far.

Pens' Malkin Tallies Assist Monday

News: Evgeni Malkin tallied his 36th assist and 48th point Monday against Florida.
Analysis: He's one of the few NHL players averaging better than a point per game (1.26). Evgeni Malkin took six shots Monday, but was caught on the ice for a shorthanded goal and finished minus-3. The Pens draw the Canadiens on Wednesday, and Geno notched two assists in his last game against Montreal.

Pens' Malkin Picks Up Point Wednesday

News: Evgeni Malkin finished Wednesday with an assist, plus-1 rating, four shots and four penalty minutes against Washington.
Analysis: He was the recipient of some vicious attempted checks by fellow Russian, Alexander Ovechkin. Evgeni Malkin picked up two more minor penalties, continuing a trend of undisciplined play.

Pens' Malkin Making Sin Bin Home

News: Evgeni Malkin, who has scored four goals and six points in four games since returning from a knee injury, has struggled maintaining his on-ice discipline.
Analysis: The star center committed penalties during power-play opportunities in both of Pittsburgh's last two games -- in one instance he pushed the goalie stick away from netminder Devan Dubnyk. Evgeni Malkin has committed 11 minor penalties in his last 11 contests totaling 22 PIM. He had 24 PIM in his previous 25 games. Of course, Malkin's mischievousness serves to help fantasy owners in leagues which include penalty minutes as a category.
