Pens' Malkin Held Off Score Sheet In Round 1

News: Evgeni Malkin put a team-high six shots on goal in Friday's Game 5 loss to the Rangers, but failed to come away with a single point.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin was held off the score sheet in all five games of the series, which effectively thwarted any shot the Penguins had of upsetting the Presidents' Trophy winners. The star center had actually gone without a point in the final five games of the regular season as well, so he'll finish off the 2014-15 campaign in a 10-game scoring drought, an extremely rare occurrence for one of the NHL's premier offensive talents. Prior to Game 5, reports came out that Malkin had been playing through an unspecified injury of late, so that would certainly seem to explain the steep drop in his production. Don't be surprised if news surfaces in the coming days that Malkin will require some sort of offseason procedure to address the injury.

Penguins' Malkin Playing Hurt?

News: Evgeni Malkin is reportedly playing through an unspecified injury, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: While the issue does not threaten Evgeni Malkin's availability for Friday's Game 5 against the Rangers, it corresponds with the forward's quiet production of late. Specifically, Malkin has yet to score a point in four playoff games to date, and has recorded just three assists over his past 14 games overall.

Pens' Malkin's Goalless Slump Reaches 11 Games

News: The Rangers kept Evgeni Malkin in check Thursday, limiting the Russian to two shots on goal over 17:31 TOI in a pointless performance.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin scored seven points in seven games against New York in last season's playoffs, but netted just one goal and an assist in three games at Madison Square Garden. The center is likely playing through a back injury, but he needs to come up big if the Pens expect to challenge the Blueshirts in Round 1.

Pens' Malkin Closes Regular Season In Goal Funk

News: Evgeni Malkin, who was held without a point Saturday, saw his goal-scoring slump reach 10 games against the Sabres.
Analysis: He registered a game-high six shots Saturday, but nothing he shoots has found the back of the net in recent weeks. He's obviously still less than 100 percent healthy and will likely have until Thursday before the first postseason game begins. Evgeni Malkin netted three goals and seven points in seven playoff games against New York last spring and has 42 points in 46 career tilts against the Blueshirts.

Pens' Malkin Shooting Blanks

News: Evgeni Malkin was held pointless and registered a minus-2 rating Tuesday night in Ottawa.
Analysis: He hasn't scored a point in two games since returning from a lower-body injury. The Russian seemed to be playing at less than 100 percent late in Tuesday's game, which is something to keep an eye on going into the final regular-season weekend.

Pens' Malkin (Undisclosed) Returning Sunday

News: Evgeni Malkin (undisclosed) will return for Sunday's game against the Flyers.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin only missed two games, with coach Mike Johnston describing the injury as "nagging". It's worth keeping an eye on the superstar center, as Johnston's comments hint that the issue could pop back up over the final few games of the season or in the playoffs.

Pens' Malkin Confirmed Out Saturday

News: As expected, Evgeni Malkin (undisclosed) will sit out Saturday's game against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Coach Mike Johnston described Evgeni Malkin's injury as "nagging," which doesn't bode well for the center going forward. However, the Penguins don't believe the injury is serious enough to cost Malkin much further action, as he's expected to be back in the lineup for Sunday's tilt with the Flyers, according to Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Pens' Malkin Nearing Return

News: Coach Mike Johnston said Evgeni Malkin (undisclosed) might play Sunday and will definitely be ready for Tuesday's game. He's already been ruled out of Saturday's tilt in Columbus.
Analysis: The Penguins coach said he knew Evgeni Malkin would likely only play one game over the weekend due to a nagging injury. "We'll see if he's good enough for Sunday," Johnston said. "I hope he'll be able to play on Sunday, but I'm sure he'll be able to play Tuesday." Whenever Malkin does return, he will likely skate with Chris Kunitz and Blake Comeau.

Pens' Malkin Ruled Out For Saturday

News: Evgeni Malkin (undisclosed) will not play in Saturday's game against the Blue Jackets, but he is questionable for Sunday's game against the Flyers, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin's injury is not thought to be especially serious, but the Penguins are at the point in their season when there's little need for an aggressive approach to such matters. As relayed by coach Mike Johnston, Malkin can be considered questionable for Sunday. The center was able to practice Friday, but didn't take part in line rushes.

Pens' Malkin (Undisclosed) Practicing Friday

News: Evgeni Malkin (undisclosed) is on the ice for Friday's practice, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Penguins coach Mike Johnston said Thursday that the injury is not serious, but he wasn't ready to commit to Evgeni Malkin being available for Saturday's game against Columbus. While the superstar winger's Friday participation does point in that direction, the Penguins can afford to take a cautious approach.

Penguins' Malkin Day-To-Day

News: Evgeni Malkin is considered day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.
Analysis: Based on coach Mike Johnston's comments, there's a chance that Evgeni Malkin -- who the report suggests is dealing with a "a slight injury" -- could be available for Saturday's game against the Blue Jackets, but such an outcome is not a lock, based on the rough parameters that the coach outlined. "I don't expect it to linger," Johnston said. "It's day-to-day, so it may be two, three, four, maybe somewhere in that range." Malkin was able to participate in Thursday's practice session, seeing involvement in the majority of the drills.

Penguins' Malkin Day-to-Day With Minor Injury

News: Head coach Mike Johnston confirmed that Evgeni Malkin is dealing with a minor injury and is day-to-day moving forward.
Analysis: Neither Johnston nor the team provided any other details about the setback, but the injury puts into question Evgeni Malkin's availability for the Pittsburgh's next game Saturday against Columbus. Expect the Penguins to provide an update on Malkin's status at some point in the next few days.

Pens' Malkin (Undisclosed) A Late Scratch

News: Evgeni Malkin (undisclosed) will miss Wednesday night's game against the Flyers.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin didn't practice or skate Tuesday, but this announcement still comes as a bit of a surprise. It's unclear at this point how the lines will shake out, but Brandon Sutter or Maxim Lapierre could see a slight bump in ice time as a result. Malkin's next chance to return will be Saturday against the Blue Jackets.

Pens' Malkin Misses Practice Tuesday

News: Evgeni Malkin's absence during Tuesday's practice was explained as a "maintenance day" by assistant coach Gary Agnew.
Analysis: "Just a maintenance day for him," Agnew said. Fantasy owners will want to keep close watch on Evgeni Malkin's status heading into Wednesday's game against Philadelphia. He missed six games with a lower-body injury before returning for a pair of games last weekend.

Pens' Malkin Pays Immediate Dividends

News: Evgeni Malkin assisted on a pair of power-play goals Saturday in his return after missing Pittsburgh's last six games.
Analysis: The Pens won just one game with Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist out. Malkin led all Pittsburgh forwards with 21:15 TOI, showing that he's adequately recovered from his lower-body injury.

Pens' Malkin To Play Saturday

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) will return to the lineup Saturday against the Coyotes, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: After experiencing no further soreness with his lower-body injury overnight, Evgeni Malkin will be cleared to play for the first time in six games. The Pens struggled mightily to generate offense in his absence, and with Patric Hornqvist (undisclosed) also returning to the lineup Saturday, the team should be able to get back on track against the Coyotes and goalie Mike Smith, who currently sits on a 3.16 GAA and .902 save percentage for the season. Fantasy owners can feel comfortable activating Malkin in his first game back from the injury.

Pens' Malkin Game-Time Decision Saturday

News: Coach Mike Johnston said Evgeni Malkin (lower body) took full contact during Friday's practice and labeled him as a game-time decision for Saturday's game against Phoenix.
Analysis: Johnston added that he would talk to Pittsburgh's training staff to gather further information on Evgeni Malkin. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the Penguins coach sounded confident his star forward would return to the lineup Saturday.

Pens' Malkin Could Be Back Saturday

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) felt strong after participating in Friday's practice and believes there's a "great chance" he'll be able to play Saturday against the Coyotes.
Analysis: The Penguins could surely use Evgeni Malkin back in their lineup, as the team has lost five of the last six games the center has missed while scoring a total of seven goals. While Malkin said he'll likely be cleared to play if he reports no pain or soreness over night, due to the 1:00 ET start time of Saturday's match, his availability may not be clarified until pregame warmups.

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) won't travel with the team to Raleigh for Thursday's game against the Hurricanes, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Though Evgeni Malkin will be absent for a sixth consecutive game, he was able to return to the ice Wednesday morning for another practice session. Coach Mike Johnston remains optimistic that the star center will be available for one or both of the Penguins' games over the weekend.

Pens' Malkin (Lower Body) Uncertain For Tuesday

News: Penguins coach Mike Johnston said Sunday that Evgeni Malkin (lower body) is about 50-50 or a bit worse to return for Tuesday's game against the Blues, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Evgeni Malkin, who has missed the last four games, was a limited participant at Sunday's practice. Coach Mike Johnston said Malkin will likely return before Patric Hornqvist (undisclosed), who the coach all but ruled out for Tuesday's game.

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) was present for practice Sunday.

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) is progressing and skating on his own, according to coach Mike Johnston, ROOT Sports in Pittsburgh reports.
Analysis: Johnston gave no timetable for Evgeni Malkin's return, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him skate in three of Pittsburgh's four games in the coming week, starting with Thursday's tilt in Carolina.

Pens' Malkin To Skip Two-Game Road Trip

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) will not join the Penguins for the rest of their three-game road trip ending Saturday in Arizona.
Analysis: The news doesn't come as much of a surprise after GM Jim Rutherford speculated Monday that Evgeni Malkin would be unavailable for 1-to-2 weeks after suffering the lower-body injury in last Saturday's loss to the Bruins. On a positive note, coach Mike Johnston indicated Malkin is making progress and should be on track to resume skating with the rest of the team when it returns from the trip Sunday.

Penguins' Malkin Sidelined

News: Evgeni Malkin (lower body) is expected to miss one-to-two weeks, according to ESPN's Katie Strang.
Analysis: Per NHL.com, GM Jim Rutherford relayed Monday that Evgeni Malkin is probably looking at missing seven-to-14 days, though Rutherford added that such an estimate is "a hard read because (Malkin) heals so quick." Either way, it appears safe to rule Malkin out for Tuesday's game against New Jersey, at a minimum.
