Caps' Backstrom Warming Again

News: Nicklas Backstrom collected two assists -- one at even strength, the other on a power play -- on Alex Ovechkin goals Tuesday in a win over Columbus.
Analysis: After uncharacteristically going three straight off the scoresheet, Nicklas Backstrom's bounced back with three helpers and a plus-3 rating in his last two. He's still operating at better than a point-per-game pace on the year, and he'll eventually get around to finding the net again -- he's just short of his third career 20-goal season.

Analysis: That's points in three straight for the star center, who's scoring at his best rate since his 101-point campaign back in 2009-10. With 63 points to show for 58 games now, he's one of few NHLers with a chance to clear 90 in this campaign.

News: Nicklas Backstrom collected a pair of assists in Wednesday's 5-4 overtime win over the Sharks.
Analysis: Nicklas Backstrom has one point or more in just over 63 percent of his games this campaign, making him one of the most dependable fantasy options. As an added bonus, the Swede has put up 21 of his 41 assists on the power play. Enjoy the ride if you're a Backstrom owner.

Caps' Backstrom Stays Hot Tuesday

News: Nicklas Backstrom churned out a goal and assist in Tuesday's win over the Kings.
Analysis: It's the third two-point outing for Nicklas Backstrom in three games, who is on track to turn in his best season since his 101-point outburst in 2009-10. The primary reason for his ascendance has been an increase in puck luck, as he's ridden a career-high 15.4 shooting percentage to 16 goals, just two fewer than his total from all of last season.

News: Nicklas Backstrom scored his 14th goal of the season and added an assist in Saturday's loss to the Stars.
Analysis: It really is a travesty this stud got snubbed from the all-star game once again this year. Nicklas Backstrom has put up back-to-back multi-point outings, giving him 14 goals and 46 points in 45 games on the season. Sitting fifth in the NHL with 32 assists, this elite playmaker is a must-start every game.

Caps' Backstrom: Career Point-A-Game Producer

News: Nicklas Backstrom picked up an assist in Saturday's win over Detroit.
Analysis: He is one of the most consistent point producers in the NHL. He has been producing at a point-per-game pace over his entire career -- yes, you read that right. He has 535 points in 536 games. He's rarely shut down for more than a few games and is a particularly effective in weekly head-to-head formats.

Backstrom Helps Caps Salvage One Point

News: Nicklas Backstrom scored his 12th goal of the year and assisted on Alex Ovechkin's goal later in the third period Monday, helping the Caps send the game to overtime, though they ended up with a 4-3 loss to the Isles.
Analysis: Nicklas Backstrom had been held off the scoresheet for two straight games -- just the fourth time all year that's happened -- but as he so often does, he bounced back with a quality effort. With 12 goals in 36 games now, he's on pace for 27, which would be the second-best total of his career.

Caps' Backstrom Tearing It Up ... With Goals

News: Nicklas Backstrom notched a natural hat trick in Washington's 4-2 win over Tampa Bay. It was his first regular-season hat trick.
Analysis: The guy is known as a playmaker, so what gives with the goals? We're not complaining by any means. He has five points (three goals, two assists) in his last three games and 30 points in 29 games. He's the Caps' scoring leader and needs to rolled with every start.

Capitals' Backstrom Back On Score Sheet

News: Nicklas Backstrom snapped a brief two-game scoreless skid with a pair of assists -- one on the power play -- in Tuesday's win over Tampa.
Analysis: And with that, he bounces back up to an even point-per-game pace -- 27 in 27. On the down side, 22 of those points are assists, so Nicklas Backstrom's currently on one of the worst goal-scoring paces of his career. This is highly reminiscent of the lockout-shortened 2012-13, in which he delivered a point per game over 48 contests, but scored just eight times.

Caps' Backstrom: Seven Points On Five-Game Streak

News: Nicklas Backstrom's scoring streak stands at five games and seven points, including six assists, after he picked up two helpers in a loss to Toronto on Saturday night.
Analysis: He's finally running at just over a point-per-game pace. And his face-off winning percentage this year is on the rise, too. But his SOG are way, way down -- he won't help you in that category with just 40 shots in 23 games.

News: Nicklas Backstrom collected two assists in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: After a mini scoring drought, Nicklas Backstrom has been on fire lately, picking up five points in his last three games. With Backstrom's elite passing ability, he should have no problem racking up more points by continuing to feed Alex Ovechkin as the season rolls on.

Caps' Backstrom Snaps Three-Game Skid

News: Nicklas Backstrom ended his three-game scoreless streak Thursday, picking up a goal, an assist and a plus-2 rating in a 3-2 win over the Avs.
Analysis: The little skid pushed him off a point-per-game pace, and Thursday wasn't quite enough for him to get back (he now has 18 points in 19 games), but Nicklas Backstrom should be right around 80 points when all's said and done.

Analysis: Alex Ovechkin's long-time center played a major role in Ovi's team-record-setting night, as Ovechkin's assist on Nicklas Backstrom's first-period goal gave him Washington's all-time points record. For Backstrom's part, the two-point night pushes him to 13 points on the year and exactly a point per game over the course of his own career -- 507 points in 507 contests.

News: Nicklas Backstrom scored his first goal of the year in Thursday's 6-2 win over New Jersey.
Analysis: The Swedish centerman had picked up four assists over the season's first three games, but now he's joined the goal-scoring party too. News: Nicklas Backstrom recorded two assists in Tuesday's 6-5 shootout loss to San Jose.
Analysis: Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin are clicking right off the bat, and with four assists in the first three games, Backstrom looks like he will be a solid pivot in all fantasy formats once again. Depending on where he was drafted, Backstrom's owners may have a steal on their hands this season.

Backstrom To Center Caps' Top Line Again

News: Nicklas Backstrom is slated to once again open the season as the Capitals' top-line center.
Analysis: Though Nicklas Backstrom's failed doping test during the past Winter Olympics was probably what most casual hockey observers remember about his 2013-14 campaign, the 26-year-old Swede made his greatest fantasy impact by quietly leading the league in power-play points (44), and by a relatively sizable margin. He wasn't too shabby working at even strength next to Alex Ovechkin, either, resulting in a cumulative 18 goals and 61 assists (79 points) over 82 games. While Backstrom's 101-point 2009-10 season will probably go down as the high-water mark of his career with his goal totals steadily declining since that time, he's still one of the league's more reliable centers in terms of production.

Caps' Backstrom Unavailable For World Championship

News: Nicklas Backstrom will not play for Team Sweden at the 2014 IIHF World Championships in Belarus, according to a report in Svenska Dagbladet.
Analysis: Team Sweden benchboss Par Marts said Nicklas Backstrom declined the invitation due to family reasons. Backstrom has had an impressive but emotional season of hockey this year. He led the NHL with 44 power-play points, and tied with Alexander Ovechkin for the team lead with 79 points in all 82 games for the Capitals this year. Those accomplishments bookended an Olympic campaign that ended when Backstrom was held out of the Gold Medal game against Canada for failing a drug test due to allergy medication, and would have to wait weeks to ultimately be awarded the Silver Medal. After such an emotional roller coaster ride ended with the Capitals missing the playoffs, one could hardly blame the Gavle native for wanting to spend a little time away from the game. Although the Capitals likely face a turbulent offseason, Backstrom remains one of the safest options at his position in all of fantasy hockey. His minus-20 performance should be viewed as an anomaly, and as long as he is getting consistent playing time with the likes of Alex Ovechkin, there's no reason to believe he won't produce solid totals next season. Look for Backstrom to be one of the first centers taken in all formats during next season's fantasy drafts.
