Caps' Backstrom Unavailable For World Championship

News: Nicklas Backstrom will not play for Team Sweden at the 2014 IIHF World Championships in Belarus, according to a report in Svenska Dagbladet.
Analysis: Team Sweden benchboss Par Marts said Nicklas Backstrom declined the invitation due to family reasons. Backstrom has had an impressive but emotional season of hockey this year. He led the NHL with 44 power-play points, and tied with Alexander Ovechkin for the team lead with 79 points in all 82 games for the Capitals this year. Those accomplishments bookended an Olympic campaign that ended when Backstrom was held out of the Gold Medal game against Canada for failing a drug test due to allergy medication, and would have to wait weeks to ultimately be awarded the Silver Medal. After such an emotional roller coaster ride ended with the Capitals missing the playoffs, one could hardly blame the Gavle native for wanting to spend a little time away from the game. Although the Capitals likely face a turbulent offseason, Backstrom remains one of the safest options at his position in all of fantasy hockey. His minus-20 performance should be viewed as an anomaly, and as long as he is getting consistent playing time with the likes of Alex Ovechkin, there's no reason to believe he won't produce solid totals next season. Look for Backstrom to be one of the first centers taken in all formats during next season's fantasy drafts.

Backstrom Busy In Caps Win

News: Nicklas Backstrom grabbed a goal and an assist in Friday's 4-0 shutout over Chicago, giving him three goals in the last three games.
Analysis: Nicklas Backstrom and the Caps have defeated Chicago and St. Louis in the last week after they were eliminated from playoff contention. Backstrom is one point away from hitting 80 for the season and remains one of the league's most consistent playmakers and a tremendous bet for assists and power-play points, as 38 of his 61 assists have come on the man advantage. That minus-20 rating isn't appealing, but Backstrom's numbers are worth the hit.

Caps' Backstrom Scores Two

News: Nicklas Backstrom tallied a pair of goals -- one on the power play and both assisted by Alexander Ovechkin -- in Tuesday's win over the Blues.
Analysis: It's been a disappointing season for Nicklas Backstrom, by which we mean he's got 77 points, including a crazy 43 on the power play -- but a minus-20 rating and only 17 goals.

Caps Reunite Backstrom, Ovechkin

News: Nicklas Backstrom skated between Mikhail Grabovski and Alex Ovechkin during Wednesday's practice, Sky Kerstein of 106.7 The FAN reports.
Analysis: Nicklas Backstrom is back to playing with Ovechkin after spending the last few games anchoring the team's second unit. With Ovechkin in an even-strength scoring drought lasting more than a month, the move should help both players finish the season strong. Backstrom leads the Caps with 73 points in 76 games, but is a minus-21 on the season.

Capitals' Backstrom Tallies Three Points

News: Nicklas Backstrom scored a power-play goal and had two assists against the Predators on Sunday.
Analysis: Nicklas Backstrom is a minus-19 on the year, but his scoring totals have bounced back. He has 73 points already, which is the best he has done since the 2009-2010 season. He currently is third in assists with 59.

Caps' Backstrom Says He'll Play Saturday

News: Nicklas Backstrom (upper body) said after Thursday's practice that he would play Saturday against the Bruins, Alan May of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: It looks like the Capitals caught a huge break, when Nicklas Backstrom took a vicious hit from the Kings' Drew Doughty on Tuesday, as he will not even miss a game due to the upper-body injury he sustained. The Capitals find themselves in a four-way tie for the two Wild Card spots in the Eastern Conference and will probably be content to hand Backstrom his usual minutes Saturday with their playoff lives on the line.

Caps' Backstrom Practices Thursday

News: Nicklas Backstrom (upper body) was back on the ice for practice Thursday, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Nicklas Backstrom's presence on the ice would seem to back up coach Adam Oates' claim that the center was only removed from Tuesday's game as a precaution. The Capitals won't play again until Saturday against the Bruins, which should give Backstrom enough time to heal up and play his normal allotment of minutes.

Capitals' Backstrom Held Out As Precaution

News: Capitals head coach Adam Oates said that Nicklas Backstrom (upper body) was kept off the ice after a violent collision with Kings defenseman Drew Doughty on Tuesday as a precaution, reports CSN Washington.
Analysis: While it's unclear exactly what's ailing Nicklas Backstrom, he figures to benefit from the fact that the Caps' next game isn't until Saturday against the Bruins. Either way, keep an eye out over the coming days for any updates and consider Backstrom, who is second on the Caps in points, day-to-day for the time being.

Caps' Backstrom Has Upper-Body Injury

News: Nicklas Backstrom left Tuesday's game against the Kings with an upper-body injury and did not return.
Analysis: Nicklas Backstrom was initially ruled questionable to return by the Capitals, but it's not surprising he remained in the locker room considering the violent hit he took from the Kings' Drew Doughty. The hit sent Backstrom ramming head-first into the glass, with the forward then landing hard on his left shoulder. He'll probably be evaluated for both a concussion, and perhaps a shoulder injury.

Caps' Backstrom Leaves Game With Injury

News: Nicklas Backstrom left Tuesday's game in the first period with an upper-body injury and is questionable to return.
Analysis: Nicklas Backstrom headed to the locker room after he was knocked to the ice on a hit by the Kings' Drew Doughty. The Capitals will wait and see if he can come back out during the third period.

Backstrom's Assists Help Caps Edge Ducks

News: Nicklas Backstrom collected two power-play assists in Tuesday's 3-2 win at Anaheim.
Analysis: He skated with Evgeny Kuznetsov and Troy Brouwer instead of Alex Ovechkin when the teams were at even strength. We sense that this won't cripple Nicklas Backstrom's fantasy value, but temper your expectations; no one scores like Ovechkin, so Backstrom isn't quite as valuable in this pairing.

Capitals Place Kuznetsov With Backstrom

News: Nicklas Backstrom was skating with rookie phenom Evgeny Kuznetsov and Troy Brouwer during Monday's practice, Mike Vogel of Monumental Network reports.
Analysis: Nicklas Backstrom usually plays with Ovechkin, but given the absence of Brooks Laich (groin) and Mikhail Grabovski (ankle), and the early returns on Evgeny Kuznetsov, head coach Adam Oates is looking to spread out the scoring by placing Backstrom and Kuznetsov together. Since the controversial suspension for Team Sweden's gold medal game against Canada, Backstrom has been putting up pretty good numbers for the Caps, with two goals and eight assists in the 10 games since the Olympic Break. With the highly-skilled Kuznetsov on his left flank, don't expect the separation from Ovechkin at even-strength to hinder Backstrom's production much.

Caps' Backstrom Playing Well Since Break

News: Nicklas Backstrom provided two assists in Wednesday's loss to the Flyers.

Caps' Backstrom Explodes Out Of Break

News: Nicklas Backstrom scored a goal, dished two helpers and went plus-2 in Thursday's 5-4 victory over Florida.
Analysis: Now that's how you move on from a failed drug test at the Olympics. Dating back to before the break (during which he didn't get a break), Nicklas Backstrom has nine points in his last six games.

Capitals' Backstrom Trying To Move On From Sochi

News: Nicklas Backstrom is trying to move on from missing the gold medal game at the Sochi Olympics due to a failed drug test, The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Nicklas Backstrom was visibly on edge when questioned about the incident during a media scrum after Tuesday's practice. It is difficult to project how the incident will affect Backstrom's performance for the remainder of the Capitals' season, if at all. With the Capitals facing the NHL's most difficult schedule to close out the season, a quick and complete conclusion to this incident is paramount for Backstrom and the Capitals. If the Capitals hope to make the playoffs this season, they will need Backstrom to hit the ground running as early as Thursday's game against Florida. You may want to keep an eye on Backstrom's production, as the normally dependable pivot could be distracted by the fallout from Sochi.

Caps' Backstrom: No NHL Punishment For Failed Test

News: Nicklas Backstrom won't face any punishment from the league office after failing a doping test in Sochi, NHL.com reports. The forward was forced to sit out Sweden's 3-0 loss to Canada in the Sunday's gold medal game.
Analysis: The banned substance in question that Nicklas Backstrom tested positive for was found in his allergy medication, but NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said the forward had no intention of gaining any sort of performance-enhancing benefit. Although the failed test may cost Backstrom his silver medal, fantasy owners can roll him with confidence for this week's slate of games.

Washington's Backstrom Fails Doping Test In Sochi

News: Nicklas Backstrom did not play in Sunday's 3-0 loss to Canada in the gold medal game after failing a doping test. Backstrom tested positive for a substance found in an allergy medication that he has taken for seven years, Swedish Olympic Committee spokesman Bjorn Folin told the Associated Press.
Analysis: It's not clear what fallout, if any, he'll face from the NHL for this failed test if he'd been taking allergy medication for so long. Still, watch to make sure this doesn't impact his first few games back in the NHL.

Caps' Backstrom: Two Assists

News: Nicklas Backstrom set up two goals Saturday. He now has six assists in his last five games.
Analysis: Phew -- it seems as though that slump (two points in his previous 10 games) is over. He's still top-20 on the NHL scoring list and his 45 assists put him in a tie for third overall. Nice.

Caps' Backstrom: One Point In Last Eight Games

News: Nicklas Backstrom failed to pick up a point in Saturday's 5-0 win over Montreal. He has just one point in his last eight games.
Analysis: This is a tough period for the talented playmaker, who was utterly dominated in the faceoff circle (3 for 13). But a win is a win, particularly when the team had lost the previous seven games. Maybe the win will inject some game back into him. He's too good to be cold much longer.

Capitals' Backstrom and Ovechkin Reunited

News: Nicklas Backstrom was back with Alex Ovechkin and Marcus Johansson on the team's top line during Saturday's practice, Katie Carrera of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: In an effort to jump-start the offense, Nicklas Backstrom was moved to the second line earlier this month. In the aftermath of Friday night's embarrassing 5-1 defeat against Columbus, that experiment is on hold for the time being. Backstrom leads the Capitals with 37 assists and 26 power-play points this season, but he has been somewhat quiet since the move to the second line. Now that he's back to playing with Ovechkin and Johansson, his four-game point-less streak should soon be over. He is still a top pivot in any fantasy league.

Caps' Backstrom Scoreless Over Last Two

News: Nicklas Backstrom hasn't recorded a point over the last two games.
Analysis: Nicklas Backstrom did kick off 2014 with a goal and three assists over his first four games, so he can probably be forgiven for this minor dry spell. With 11 goals and 37 assists in 46 games, Backstrom is still poised to surpass the point-per-game plateau for the third consecutive season.

Caps' Backstrom Notches Pair In Win

News: Nicklas Backstrom provided a goal and assist in Friday's win over the Rangers.
Analysis: Nicklas Backstrom has now tallied 17 points in the last eight games, giving him 44 points on the season. Backstrom is not quite on pace to replicate his 101-point campaign of 2009-10, but with good health the rest of the way, he could be on track for the second-best scoring season of his career.

News: Nicklas Backstrom factored in both Washington goals in Friday's 3-2 shootout loss to Florida, notching a goal an an assist. He has seven points in the last two games.

News: Nicklas Backstrom picked up two assists in Saturday's win over Nashville. He now has 27 on the season.

Three-Assist Game For Caps' Backstrom

News: Nicklas Backstrom collected a hat trick of assists and went plus-2 in Sunday's win over the Blues.
Analysis: After a brief cold spell -- three scoreless games -- Nicklas Backstrom's gotten right back on the horse with four assists in his last two contests. And with Sunday's plus-2, he's back to an even rating on the year.
