Bernier Stands On Head, Blocks 47 In Leafs' Win

News: Jonathan Bernier made 47 saves in a 3-2 win over Philadelphia on Thursday night.
Analysis: He stood on his head in a game where the Leafs' defensive game disappeared. The Leafs only mustered 17 shots to the Flyers' 49, so neither the Leafs nor Jonathan Bernier are out of the woods just yet.

Leafs Turn To Bernier On Thursday

News: Jonathan Bernier is slated to start Thursday's game against the Flyers, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier is coming off a 4-3 overtime win over the Jets in his last turn, but prior to that he had been winless in his previous 10 outings, thus making him a speculative fantasy lineup option these days.

Leafs' Bernier Likely To Start Thursday

News: Jonathan Bernier is expected to start Thursday's game against the Flyers, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier was the first goalie off the ice at Wednesday's practice, which typically suggests he'll be receiving the starting nod for the following day's game. Bernier picked up a rare win his last time out Saturday against the Jets, ending a 10-game slide. Until he can start gathering victories with more regularity, Bernier doesn't make for an advisable goalie play most nights.

Leafs' Bernier: 31 Saves In OT Win

News: Jonathan Bernier stopped 31 shots in Saturday's 4-3 overtime win over Winnipeg.
Analysis: It's just his first win in 11 starts. The Leafs have been just awful and he hasn't stolen anything for them. He needs to string together some solid outings before season's end to cement his spot as the Leafs' starter for 2015-16.

Leafs' Bernier Starting Saturday

News: Jonathan Bernier will start Saturday's game against Winnipeg, TSN's Jonas Siegel reports.
Analysis: James Reimer got the start in Friday's loss to Carolina, so Jonathan Bernier will handle the second game of a back-to-back. The Leafs don't have another game until Thursday against the Flyers, and they've only picked up four points in 2015.

Leafs' Bernier Loses 10th Straight

News: Jonathan Bernier allowed three goals on only 17 shots in Tuesday's loss to Florida -- his 10th consecutive loss.
Analysis: It's another ugly stat line for the embattled netminder, who's interspersed quality outings with not-infrequent clunkers. He's given up three or more goals in 12 of his last 17 games, and the Leafs have simply been in a free-fall.

Leafs Roll With Bernier

News: Jonathan Bernier is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Panthers, Jonas Siegel of TSN 1050 reports.
Analysis: The start will be the third straight for Jonathan Bernier, whose last win came on Jan. 9. Since then, he's dropped nine straight decisions, most recently a 2-1 shootout loss to the Habs on Saturday.

Leafs' Bernier Strong In Shootout Loss

News: Jonathan Bernier played a strong game Saturday, making 31 saves in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Canadiens.
Analysis: He was steady through the game, but was undressed by two snipers in the shootout. Still, he was one of, if not the best Leaf on the ice. There's a bit of hope for the Buds if he can steal a couple.

Leafs Stick With Bernier On Saturday

News: Jonathan Bernier will be in the crease for Saturday's game against the Canadiens.
Analysis: After a three-game absence, Jonathan Bernier returned to the net in the Leafs' most recent game Thursday against the Islanders, stopping 38 of 41 pucks in a narrow loss. While he might have inspired some confidence with the quality outing, Bernier still looks no better than a middle-tier fantasy goalie most nights given the Leafs' dispassionate play since the beginning of January. It might be wise to sit him on the road against the Habs, who will counter with Vezina Trophy contender Carey Price in their net.

Leafs' Bernier: 38 Saves In 3-2 Loss

News: Jonathan Bernier made 38 saves in a 3-2 loss to the Islanders on Thursday night.
Analysis: He got off to a rocky start, allowing two goals in the first 4:03 of the game; both of the goals came on sketchy giveaways by Bernie's teammates that left the goalie alone in a battle to prevent a goal. But he stood on his head the rest of the way and gave his team a chance to get back in the game. He's a tough activation right now -- the Leafs are really struggling.

Leafs Confirm Bernier For Thursday

News: Coach Pete Horachek confirmed that Jonathan Bernier would start Thursday's game against the Islanders, Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier has been a spectator for the last three games, but had been slated to start a game over the weekend before an illness crept up and sidelined him. He quickly returned to full health and backed up James Reimer in Tuesday's loss to the Rangers, and should be on track to assume the bulk of the starts the rest of the way for the Bernier. Even so, Bernier appears to lack the level of job security he enjoyed heading into the season, as his numbers are down across the board from 2013-14. And with the Toronto offense largely going AWOL since the calendar flipped to 2015, Bernier is beginning to look more like a lower-tier starting goalie option with wins becoming increasingly scarce.

Leafs Likely To Start Bernier On Thursday

News: Jonas Siegel of TSN 1050 indicates that Jonathan Bernier is likely to start Thursday's game against the Islanders.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier, whose last start was back on Feb. 3, will be looking to earn his first win since Jan. 9. Since then, the struggling Maple Leafs have gone 1-12.

Leafs' Bernier To Back Up Tuesday

News: Jonathan Bernier (illness) will be available to back up James Reimer for Tuesday's game against the Rangers, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier was scratched for Saturday's win over the Oilers due to a late-arriving illness, but he returned to practice Monday and looks to be fully recovered. However, with Reimer helping the Leafs snap an 11-game losing streak with a strong outing against the Oilers, he'll get a second straight nod, forcing Bernier to spectate in his return to active duty.

Leafs' Bernier (Illness) Practices Monday

News: Jonathan Bernier (illness) was on the ice for practice Monday,Mark Masters of TSN reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier missed Saturday's game due to the illness, requiring the Maple Leafs to recall Antoine Bibeau on an emergency basis. It appears the worst of the ailment is behind him, as he has taken the ice for practice, and will likely be available for Tuesday's game against the Rangers.

Leafs' Bernier Ruled Out Saturday With Illness

News: Jonathan Bernier has been ruled out of Saturday's game against the Oilers with an illness.
Analysis: As was foreshadowed by the emergency call-up of Antoine Bibeau from AHL Toronto hours earlier, Jonathan Bernier felt sick Saturday morning and will not be starting, despite coach Pete Horachek previously confirming he'd be in goal. Bernier will be treated as day-to-day for time being, allowing James Reimer to pick up his second start in as many games.

Some Doubt Cast On Availability Of Leafs' Bernier

News: Though Jonathan Bernier was confirmed to receive the start Saturday against the Oilers, it's believed he's dealing with an illness that could keep him unavailable, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports.
Analysis: The Leafs have already recalled Antoine Bibeau from AHL Toronto on an emergency basis, suggesting either Jonathan Bernier or Friday's starter, James Reimer, are feeling under the weather. Reimer would pick up another start if Bernier ends up being ruled out Saturday, but an update on the matter is unlikely to come until pregame warmups. With Bernier's status seemingly at risk for the match, it might be most prudent for those playing in daily formats to invest elsewhere Saturday.

Leafs Return Crease To Bernier On Saturday

News: Coach Peter Horachek confirmed Jonathan Bernier would be the starter in goal for Saturday's game against the Oilers, David Alter of MapleLeafs.com reports.
Analysis: The decision isn't a surprising one after backup James Reimer received the starting nod in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Devils. Jonathan Bernier will be looking to snap the Leafs' club-record 11-game losing streak Saturday, which might be an achievable goal against an Oilers team that similarly finds itself in tanking mode. While fantasy owners will more than likely keep Bernier active for this one, it's difficult to do so with much confidence, as he's yielded three or more goals in five of his last six starts.

Leafs' Bernier Returns, Finishes With 24 Saves

News: Jonathan Bernier, who missed time during the second and third period after suffering an injury, returned to Tuesday's game and finished with 24 saves in a 4-3 loss to Nashville.
Analysis: He left the game with the Leafs down 2-1 and returned when they were up 3-2. That's not a condemnation of Jonathan Bernier, per se, but he looked uncomfortable and out of position at times when he came back in the third.

Leafs' Bernier Returns To Game After Skate Cut

News: Jonathan Bernier returned to Tuesday's game at the 15:43 mark of the third period after getting treatment for cutting his left leg with his right skate late in the second period.
Analysis: We didn't think he'd return to the game, but he did. He made some immediate saves and appeared no worse for the wear.

Leafs' Bernier Cut By Skate, Will Return To Game

News: Jonathan Bernier cut himself with his skate while making a save Tuesday night, according to an intermission report on TSN. He's slated to return in the third period.
Analysis: Wow -- what a relief. The cut is clearly not bad enough for too many stitches if he's due back, so that's great news for his owners and the Leafs. He didn't take the ice to start the third, though. Still, you can take a deep breath now.

Leafs' Bernier Leaves Game In Second Period

News: Jonathan Bernier left Tuesday's game against the Predators with 1:08 left in the second period, according to in-game reports on TSN. He made a save as a Predator was cutting across the crease, and then immediately skated off the ice and went to the dressing room.
Analysis: He was replaced by James Reimer. Nobody bumped him and replays show him looking at his left leg, but he went off under his own steam and with no apparent limp. More when it's available.

Leafs' Bernier To Start Tuesday

News: Jonathan Bernier will start Tuesday's game against the Predators, Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier will look to get the Maple Leafs a second victory in 2015. His last outing was an adventure, as he allowed two soft goals, including a memorable long-distance shot from Arizona's Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Leafs' Bernier: 42 Saves, But Two Iffy Goals

News: Jonathan Bernier made 42 saves -- but allowed two sketchy goals -- in Toronto's 3-1 loss to Arizona on Thursday night.
Analysis: He had been perfect for two periods, but five seconds into the third period, he allowed a 140-foot, shorthanded wobbler -- yep, that's all the way from the Arizona blue line. The next goal, which came less than four minutes later, was a bad-angle shot that went through a gaping hole between his pads and his behind as he was "protecting" the post. Jonathan Bernier was actually pretty good the rest of the outing; it was almost like he stopped paying attention for two moments in time. He should rebound, but he needs to demonstrate he can maintain focus for a full 60 minutes.

Maple Leafs' Bernier Starts Thursday

News: Jonathan Bernier will start Thursday's game against the Coyotes, David Alter of the Maple Leafs' website reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier will start for the second time in as many nights despite tallying 64:43 TOI in Toronto's loss to New Jersey on Wednesday. He will square off against a slumping Arizona team that has lost seven in a row entering Thursday's game.

Leafs' Bernier: 22 Saves In Shootout Loss

News: Jonathan Bernier made 22 saves in a 2-1 shootout loss to New Jersey on Wednesday night.
Analysis: It was a goalie duel all night long. He nursed a shutout, but lost that bid with just 2:40 left in the game. Then he was beaten twice in the shootout on dekes. Still, his game was solid enough to earn the second star and that's a great step as the Leafs work to break out of their current slump.
