Leafs' Bernier: Competition Looming For Top Role?

News: Jonathan Bernier (sports hernia) may face competition from James Reimer for the starter's job in training camp, according to Toronto's Sportsnet590 TheFAN. James Reimer says he was told there was a "definite opportunity" for him to win back the starter's gig.
Analysis: Maybe it's semantics and maybe it's a ploy to get Reimer re-signed. Who knows? Jonathan Bernier clearly won the starter's gig last year, but he did suffer an injury that put him on the sidelines for a period of time. Camp should be interesting, although our money is on Bernier.

Leafs' Bernier: Sports Hernia Surgery A Success

News: Jonathan Bernier (sports hernia) underwent surgery and is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, reports the Leafs' official site.
Analysis: He's progressing well in his recovery. The Leafs need him to be healthy to be able to make noise next season in the East.

Hernia Surgery On Tap For Leafs' Bernier

News: Jonathan Bernier (knee) is slated to undergo surgery to repair a sports hernia, cbc.ca reports. He had missed five games in March due to the injury and aggravated it April 3 against Boston.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier, who missed the Leafs' final four regular-season games with an MCL issue, is expected to need two-to-three weeks of rehab following the procedure. The 25-year-old goalie, who went 26-19-7 in 55 games as Toronto's top netminder this past season, recording a 2.68 GAA average and a .923 save percentage in the process, will now have plenty of time to recover from his aches and pains in advance of the 2014-15 season.

Leafs' Bernier Out Three Weeks

News: Jonathan Bernier has suffered an MCL injury (knee) and will be out at least three weeks, according to a report on Toronto's Sportsnet 590TheFAN.
Analysis: The net is now James Reimer's and it's on his back to get the Leafs to the playoffs.

Leafs' Bernier Headed For MRI

News: Jonathan Bernier (lower body) will undergo an MRI, and the Maple Leafs should know more about the goaltender's injury Friday, Sportsnet's David Alter reports.
Analysis: The injury didn't look too good at first glance in Thursday's game, so the MRI isn't particularly surprising. Look for James Reimer to start Saturday's game against the Jets if Jonathan Bernier is not able to go.

Leafs' Bernier Injured In Win

News: Jonathan Bernier suffered an apparent lower-body injury during the third period of Thursday's game, and he was removed from the contest immediately thereafter, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Toronto's Paul Ranger pushed Boston's Patrice Bergeron into Jonathan Bernier, who immediately went down grabbing the lower part of his body. The goaltender's legs were in an awkward position after Bergeron fell on top of him, and James Reimer replaced Bernier in net right after the injury occurred. Bernier was able to skate off under his power, but it still won't be surprising if he misses at least a game or two.

Leafs Will Start Bernier On Thursday

News: Jonathan Bernier will be between the pipes Thursday against the Bruins, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: With the Maple Leafs hanging on the edge of the Eastern Conference playoff race, coach Randy Carlyle will tap Jonathan Bernier for his fifth straight start. Bernier snapped a three-game losing skid his last time out, saving 22 of 24 shots to dispatch the Flames.

Leafs' Bernier: 22 Saves In Win

News: Jonathan Bernier made 22 saves in Tuesday's 3-2 win over Calgary.
Analysis: There was one goal called back because it was tipped in with a high stick. But that doesn't matter -- a win is a win, and this one is Jonathan Bernier's first since returning from injury; in fact, it's his first since March 10.

Leafs Roll With Bernier On Tuesday

News: Jonathan Bernier is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Flames, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier, who is in line to make his fourth straight start Tuesday, has dropped his last three turns while allowing 12 goals in that span.

Bernier Makes 24 Saves In Toronto Loss

News: Jonathan Bernier made 24 saves in a 4-2 loss to the Red Wings on Saturday night. He is 0-3 since his return from a groin injury and has allowed 12 goals in those games.
Analysis: He actually kept his team in the game -- the score would have been higher had he not been able to roll. But still -- three straight, four-goal losses? He needs to be even better to give his mates a chance at a playoff berth.

Leafs Will Start Bernier On Saturday

News: Jonathan Bernier will draw the start in the crease Saturday against the Red Wings, Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: In a rematch of the two Winter Classic squads, Jonathan Bernier will be looking to get back on track after allowing a total of eight goals over the last two games, both losses.

Bernier, Leafs Fall Friday

News: Jonathan Bernier allowed four goals on 29 shots in Friday's 4-2 loss to Philadelphia, his second consecutive loss since returning from a groin injury and the second consecutive game in which he has allowed four goals.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier has fallen victim to some of the issues that plagued James Reimer while the Leafs swooned, with spotty defensive play and too many shots allowed being the chief culprits. The Leafs are a mess right now as their once secure playoff spot has vanished. Bernier figures to see most of the starts going forward, but his play in two games back has hardly been encouraging.

Leafs' Bernier In Net Friday

News: Jonathan Bernier will be between the pipes for Friday's contest, Mark Masters of TSN reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier returned to the ice on Tuesday following a groin injury and made 44 saves on 49 shots. Despite being peppered with shots on Tuesday, all seems well for the netminder. He will likely start a majority of the games going forward.

Leafs' Bernier Makes 44 Saves In Return

News: Jonathan Bernier (groin) returned to action Tuesday night against the Blues and made 44 saves in a 5-3 loss. He allowed four goals.
Analysis: He was flat-out pelted with pucks from start to finish, but particularly early. The score was actually flattering to the Leafs -- Jonathan Bernier was the only reason it was close. He should be good going forward, so get him back in your blue paint.

Leafs' Bernier Back In Action Tuesday

News: Jonathan Bernier (groin) led the Maple Leafs onto the ice during pregame warmups, suggesting he'll make the start Tuesday against the Blues.
Analysis: Barring any last-minute setbacks during warmups, Jonathan Bernier will man the net for the first time since March 13. The Leafs have dropped five straight games with Bernier out of commission, so they need him healthy and effective immediately upon his return to hold off a slew of teams for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Leafs' Bernier May Return On Tuesday

News: Coach Randy Carlyle indicated that a decision on the availability of Jonathan Bernier (groin) for Tuesday's game against the Blues has yet to be made, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Earlier reports (based on the team's morning skate) suggested that Jonathan Bernier was on track to start Tuesday, but evidently that's not a lock. If he does get the nod, Bernier will try to help Toronto end a five-game skid on Tuesday.

Leafs' Bernier Poised To Return

News: Jonathan Bernier (groin) appears to be on track to start Tuesday's game against the Blues, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Assuming he gets the nod, Jonathan Bernier -- who last played on March 13 -- will try to help the Leafs end their five game-skid Tuesday against the Blues, who currently top the Western Conference with 103 points.

Leafs' Bernier Practices Monday

News: Jonathan Bernier (groin) was on the ice for Monday's practice, but it still hasn't been determined when he'll be available for games, David Alter of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.
Analysis: Coach Randy Carlyle said the team is just waiting for Jonathan Bernier to "give them the green light" to let them know when he's ready to play. His participation in practice would seem to be a good sign, and if all goes well during Tuesday's morning skate, he may even be in that night's lineup against the Blues.

Leafs' Bernier Does Not Dress As Backup

News: Jonathan Bernier (groin) did not dress as the Leafs' backup on Saturday despite being listed as such before the game.
Analysis: He should be available Sunday, though, and could be in the blue paint in New Jersey on Sunday night.

Maple Leafs' Bernier Serving As No. 2 Saturday

News: Jonathan Bernier (groin) is listed as the Maple Leafs' backup goalie for Saturday's game against the Canadiens, Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: James Reimer is in net against the Habs, but Jonathan Bernier is at least available as a backup, indicating that a return to game action lies in his near future.

Leafs' Coach: Decision On Bernier (Groin) Saturday

News: Leafs' coach Randy Carlyle will make a decision about Jonathan Bernier's (groin) availability for Saturday night's game on Saturday afternoon, reports the Toronto Star. "We think Bernie (Bernier) has showed progress," said Carlyle after Friday's practice where Bernier took shots. "To say he's available for tomorrow night (vs. Montreal), I can't say right now. It's another decision that's likely to come (Saturday) afternoon."
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier himself didn't seem as optimistic, saying he'd need to have a full practice before getting into a game. When pushed about his participation at practice Friday, he was quick to say "no, it was not a full practice." Bernier did take in more than 95 percent of drills and scrimmages, yielding to call-up Drew MacIntyre for the closing shooting drills.

Leafs' Bernier Returns To Practice

News: Jonathan Bernier (groin) participated in his first practice since suffering a groin injury last week, TSN Radio 1050's Jonas Siegel reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier may be back in practice, but it remains to be seen how his low-grade muscle pull will respond. Look for a combination of James Reimer and Drew MacIntyre in the Leafs' back-to-back set this weekend while Bernier returns to health. He was on a four-game winning streak before suffering the injury.

Leafs' Bernier Day-To-Day

News: Jonathan Bernier (groin) remains day-to-day, the Star reports.
Analysis: Though Jonathan Bernier skated Wednesday morning, the report suggests that he did not work at full speed. As a result, Bernier won't be available Wednesday night against the Lightning, and is iffy for the Leafs' weekend games as well.

Leafs' Bernier Diagnosed With Muscle Strain

News: Jonathan Bernier has been diagnosed with a low-grade muscle strain, Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: Coach Randy Carlyle seemed rather optimistic about Jonathan Bernier's outlook, suggesting the goalie was "closer to day-to-day than week-to-week" with the injury. The Leafs will probably roll with James Reimer or emergency call-up Drew MacIntyre for their next two games Tuesday and Wednesday, but Bernier could be an option by the weekend, depending on how he recovers from the muscle strain.

Maple Leafs' Bernier Will Likely Receive MRI

News: Jonathan Bernier will likely undergo an MRI exam for his lower-body injury, TSN's Mark Masters reports.
Analysis: The Maple Leafs maintain that Jonathan Bernier's injury is not serious, but it appears he will still receive the MRI for precautionary reasons. Head coach Randy Carlyle did not rule Bernier out for either of the two games remaining on the Maple Leafs' current road trip, so he could return to action as soon as Sunday.
