Bernier Not Guaranteed Leafs' Starting Job

News: New general manager Lou Lamoriello envisions the Leafs' goaltending job as an open competition and indicates that head coach Mike Babcock feels the same way, according to the Toronto Star. "I think that right now I have a total open mind, and certainly I know Mike has the same," Lamoriello said. This will be the third straight season with Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer splitting goaltending duties.
Analysis: Lamoriello did indicate that Jonathan Bernier "has the ability, no question" to be a number one goalie in the NHL, but the twinetender hasn't shown the consistency in his game to take that job. And it's that inconsistency that has prevented him from getting a long-term deal with the Leafs. He just inked a two-year contract with the hope he can show the team he deserves a long-term, big-money deal. "Hopefully he has a year that pushes us, that is the organization, to speak to him next summer and looking for long term," continued Lamoriello.

Bernier, Leafs Rach Two-Year Agreement

News: Jonathan Bernier and the Maple Leafs came to terms Sunday on a two-year, $8.3 million contract, thus avoiding an arbitration ruling, Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: It initially looked like the two parties were too far apart to agree on a deal, but they were able to find common ground near the midpoint and avoid the risk of an arbitration decision. The deal is closer to Jonathan Bernier's proposed figure, but the second year buys out a year of free agency. Bernier is coming off a disappointing 2014-15 campaign, during which he saw his numbers drop in the wins (21), GAA (2.87), and save percentage (.912) categories from the season prior.

Bernier, Leafs Far Apart On New Contract

News: Jonathan Bernier and the Leafs met with an arbitrator for about five hours Friday, reports Sportsnet.ca. The two sides are too far apart in terms of demands to come to a deal on their own.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier and his camp asked for $5.1 million, while the Leafs countered with $2.89 million. The Leafs' offer would represent a pay cut for the twinetender -- he made $3.4 million last season. The two sides can still come to a deal together before Sunday's arb ruling, but they seem too apart right now.

No World Championships For Leafs Bernier

News: Jonathan Bernier was invited to play for Team Canada at the upcoming World Championships, but declined, according to Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier says its partly because of an injury he wouldn't disclose and partly because of uncertainty around his contract. He becomes a restricted free agent this summer.

Leafs' Bernier In Net Saturday

News: Jonathan Bernier will be in the net for Saturday's game against the Canadiens, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Coach Peter Horachek suggested earlier in the week that Jonathan Bernier would start the season finale, so it doesn't come as much surprise that the coach's plan will hold firm. Bernier, who came on in relief of James Reimer in Wednesday's loss to the Blue Jackets, enters the crease Saturday with a 21-28-6 record, 2.87 GAA, and .912 save percentage over 57 games. He'll be a heavy underdog with presumptive Hart Trophy frontrunner Carey Price manning the opposite net.

Leafs' Bernier Appears In Relief Against Jackets

News: Jonathan Bernier replaced starter James Reimer early in the second period of Wednesday's game against the Blue Jackets. He allowed one goal on 13 shots in a 5-0 loss.
Analysis: He'll start Saturday and attempt to get his second win in his last eight starts. Do not roll him. Do not bother with him. Maybe he'll deliver more fantasy value next season. Maybe.

Leafs Turn To Bernier To Start Season Finale

News: Jonathan Bernier is slated to start Saturday's game against Montreal, TSN's Mark Masters reports.
Analysis: James Reimer is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Blue Jackets, which leaves Jonathan Bernier -- who missed Tuesday's practice for personal reasons -- to start the Leafs' season finale on Saturday.

Leafs' Bernier Terrific In Shootout Win

News: Jonathan Bernier tuned in an excellent performance Sunday, stopping 43 of 45 shots in a shootout victory over Ottawa.
Analysis: An absolute clutch performance from Jonathan Bernier, who helped the Leafs deliver a big blow to the Senators playoff hopes. It was just Bernier's first win in eight games, advancing his record to 21-28-6 on the season. The 26-year-old has had a down year, but he still owns a mediocre .912 save percentage and is likely to see at least one more start before the end of the season.

Leafs' Bernier To Start Sunday

News: Jonathan Bernier will start Sunday's game against the Senators.
Analysis: James Reimer has been a bit better of late, but both he and Jonathan Bernier continue to get work. Neither is a good bet to earn a win this weekend, with Toronto facing two teams that are still fighting for the playoffs.

Leafs' Bernier: 27 Saves In Loss to Sabres

News: Jonathan Bernier made 27 saves in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Sabres.
Analysis: He and the Leafs were up 3-1 in the second, but they couldn't hold the lead. It's his eighth straight loss. Don't bother putting him in your lineup. He'll only make you cry.

Leafs' Bernier Sits Tuesday, Starts Wednesday

News: James Reimer, not Jonathan Bernier, will start Tuesday's game against Tampa Bay, according to a report on Toronto's Sportsnet FAN 590. Bernier will instead be in net against Buffalo on Wednesday night.
Analysis: Neither man is a worthy activation right now given the Leafs' troubles, even against the Sabres. There are no guaranteed wins for this squad.

Leafs Pull Bernier In Thursday's Loss

News: Jonathan Bernier was yanked after giving up three goals on 16 shots Thursday in a 4-1 loss to Florida.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier had been putting up better stats over the last few games, but this was a step back for him and just the latest in a seven-game losing streak for the Leafs, who look to be trying their darnedest to improve their odds in the draft lottery.

Leafs Turn To Bernier On Thursday

News: Jonathan Bernier is slated to start Thursday's game against the Panthers, Jonas Siegel of TSN 1050 reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier has dropped his last five decisions for the Leafs, who have dropped six games in a row overall, thus making the goalie a speculative play in Thursday fantasy lineups.

Leafs' Bernier Solid In Loss

News: Jonathan Bernier stopped 30 of 32 shots, but was on the losing end of Monday's 2-1 tilt against the Wild.
Analysis: It was a solid performance from Jonathan Bernier, but it wasn't enough to stop his losing streak from running to five straight. The 26-year-old hasn't been particularly reliable in net and the losses are likely to continue piling up on a Maple Leafs team that's already been eliminated, so there's not much here for fantasy owners to be intrigued by.

Leafs' Bernier Starting Monday

News: Jonathan Bernier will start between the pipes against the Wild on Monday, Jonas Siegel of TSN 1050 reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier dropped his last contest despite stopping 22 of the 23 shots he faced in relief of James Reimer. He has now dropped each of his last four starts in net, but will look to turn things around Monday against the Wild.

Leafs' Bernier: 22 Saves In Relief

News: Jonathan Bernier allowed one goal on 23 shots in relief Saturday against the Senators.
Analysis: Unfortunately, that single goal puts him on the hook for the loss, despite some solid play. He's a weak fantasy option right now and through season's end -- it'd take some kind of miracle to get us to the point where we'd recommend him.

Leafs' Bernier: 38 Saves In Loss

News: Jonathan Bernier made 38 saves on 42 shots in Thursday's 4-1 loss to San Jose.
Analysis: He's 3-6-1 in his last 10 games and shouldn't be put into active fantasy duty. Period. The Leafs are that bad.

Leafs Turn To Bernier Thursday

News: Jonathan Bernier is slated to start Thursday's game against the Sharks, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier, who will look to bounce back from Monday's rough outing in which he was pulled 8:08 into the game after allowing three goals on four shots, has dropped five of his last six turns and has allowed at least three goals in each of those contests.

Buds' Bernier Blown Up By Oilers

News: Jonathan Bernier was blown up by the Oilers on Monday, getting yanked just 8:08 into the game after allowing three goals on four shots.
Analysis: It doesn't get much worse than this for a goaltender in the NHL -- especially since it was against one of the league's worst teams. The hole proved too much for the Leafs to get out of as they eventually fell by a score of 4-1, handing Jonathan Bernier his fifth loss in six starts. James Reimer made 28 of 29 saves in relief, so he's all but certain to get the nod for Toronto's next game against San Jose on Thursday.

Leafs Turn To Bernier On Monday

News: Jonathan Bernier is in line to start Monday's game against the Oilers, Jack Michaels of the Oilers Radio Network reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier, who has surrendered at least three goals in each of his last five appearances, catches a bit of a break matchup-wise on Monday, with the Oilers in the midst of a seven-game slide.

Bernier Makes 31 Saves In Leafs Loss

News: Jonathan Bernier made 31 saves in Saturday's 4-1 loss to Vancouver. He allowed three goals.
Analysis: Yet again, his teammates failed to put up much of an effort, leaving him high and dry too many times. The Leafs played better in Vancouver than they did in Calgary on Friday, but no goalie can make miracles happen consistently for these guys. Bench him until there's sign of life in the Leafs.

Leafs Confirm Bernier For Saturday

News: Jonathan Bernier has been confirmed as the starter in goal for Saturday's game against the Canucks, Mark Masters of TSN reports.
Analysis: As expected, Jonathan Bernier will enter the crease after being rested a night earlier in favor of backup James Reimer. For what it's worth, Bernier has enjoyed tremendous success against the Canucks, albeit in a small sample. In three games, he's gone 3-0-0 with a 2.00 GAA and .945 save percentage.

Leafs' Bernier Likely To Play Saturday

News: Jonathan Bernier is likely to man the net Saturday against the Canucks, Jeff Paterson of TSN 1040 reports.
Analysis: The Leafs handed backup James Reimer the start Friday against the Flames, so it follows that Jonathan Bernier will be back in the crease Saturday. With a 2.80 GAA, .914 save percentage, and an uninspired cast surrounding him, Bernier is hard to justify keeping active against quality teams like the Canucks.

Leafs' Bernier: 30 Saves In Shootout Win

News: Jonathan Bernier made 30 saves through overtime and stopped all three shooters in the shootout in Toronto's 4-3 win over Buffalo.
Analysis: His mates played a lackluster game in front of him, giving the puck away and losing puck battles left, right and center. He remains a sketchy activation because the Leafs are just awful right now.

Leafs' Bernier To Draw Start Wednesday

News: Jonathan Bernier will be in the crease for Wednesday's game against the Sabres, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Jonathan Bernier's three-game losing streak has caused his record to dip below .500 for the season, with the netminder allowing at least three goals in each contest. Despite his recent struggles, Bernier will have a good chance to score a win for his fantasy owners Wednesday against the lottery-bound Sabres, who rank last in the league in goals and shot attempts per game. The Leafs haven't been much better than the Sabres over the last two months, but there's still enough talent on the team to guide Bernier to the victory column.
