Flames' Irving Heading To Finland

News: Leland Irving is looking to play in Finland this season, the Calgary Sun reports.
Analysis: Leland Irving wasn't being mentioned much in Calgary's goalie battle, so he figured it would be of better use to him to play overseas. He didn't rule out a return to the NHL at some point, however.

Flames Recall Irving

News: The Flames have recalled Leland Irving from AHL Abbotsford.
Analysis: Leland Irving played in six consecutive games for the Flames in February. He had a record of 2-1-1 with a 3.33 goals-against average and a .883 save percentage over that span. He will serve as the third-string goalie for the Flames.

Flames' Irving Undergoes Minor Procedure

News: Leland Irving underwent minor elective surgery on March 12th, the Flames' official site reports.
Analysis: The report adds that Leland Irving's surgery went well and the goalie is expected to return to action within two weeks.

Flames' Irving Demoted To AHL

News: Leland Irving was demoted to AHL Abbotsford on Saturday, the Calgary Sun reports.
Analysis: Leland Irving struggled mightily while starting the last five games in place of the injured Miikka Kiprusoff and was pulled in favor of Joey MacDonald after allowing two goals in the first four minutes of Friday's 5-2 loss to the Blues. The Flames have decided to use MacDonald as their top goaltender until Kiprusoff returns, leaving Irving to receive more development time in the minors.

Irving Pulled Early In Flames' Loss

News: Leland Irving allowed two goals on four shots in Friday's loss to St. Louis, lasting just 4:07 despite getting the start.
Analysis: Stat lines like this won't endear Leland Irving to the Flames' manangement while Miikka Kipprusoff is injured. Irving has started the last few games for Calgary, but the Flames have been more than a bit enigmatic this season. He was relieved by Joey MacDonald on Friday.

Flames' Irving To Start Friday

News: Leland Irving will start Friday's game against the Blues.
Analysis: Despite allowing four goals to the Stars on Wednesday, Leland Irving earned a win. He'll be between the pipes again Friday.

Flames' Irving Picks Up Win Wednesday

News: Leland Irving stopped 30 shots in a 7-4 victory over Dallas on Wednesday night.
Analysis: The Flames ultimately allowed the Stars to hang around longer than they should have after piling up a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the opening period. Leland Irving should continue to see the majority of the starts for the Flames while Miikka Kiprusoff is on IR.

Flames Stick With Irving

News: Leland Irving is in line to make his fifth straight appearance Wednesday against the Stars, the Calgary Herald reports.
Analysis: With Miikka Kiprusoff unavailable, Leland Irving continues to handle the bulk of the Flames' netminding chores, now backed up by Joey MacDonald.

Flames' Irving Lets In One But Loses

News: Leland Irving made 23 saves on 24 shots but took a shootout loss against the Wild on Monday.
Analysis: Leland Irving will likely remain the starter until Miikka Kiprusoff returns from injury, but nothing he's done so far, admittedly in a very limited sample size, makes him seem like a worthy fantasy option in the interim.

Flames' Irving To Get Start Monday

News: With Miikka Kiprusoff still on the shelf, Leland Irving will get the start Monday against the Wild, the Calgary Herald reports.
Analysis: Leland Irving has played decently in the two games he's played this season, but has yielded eight goals in the two games he's started, winning one of them. He's facing long odds Monday against a tough Minnesota team, so it's best to find another option.

Irving Yields Five Tallies In Flames' Loss

News: Leland Irving allowed five goals on 31 shots as Calgary fell at Vancouver on Saturday, 5-1. He drops to 1-1-0 in two starts in relief of injured veteran Miikka Kiprusoff.
Analysis: He picked up just his second career win Thursday against Columbus, but facing the Canucks is another matter entirely. His numbers are decidedly unspectacular (3.40, .879), but with Kiprusoff on the shelf, the Flames don't have many options. We're hoping that you have the option of choosing another goaltender; Calgary has been woeful this year, and won't generate a lot of wins.

Flames' Irving To Start Saturday

News: Leland Irving will start in goal Saturday against the Canucks.
Analysis: In what was his first start of the year Thursday, Leland Irving picked up a 4-3 win over the Blue Jackets. The 24-year-old goal keeper will get the nod again Saturday with Miikka Kiprusoff (lower body) out, and there's a good chance he's between the pipes for Monday's game as well.

Calgary Offense Helps Irving To OT Win

News: Leland Irving allowed three goals on 29 shots, but came away with an overtime win Thursday against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: After posting a .912 save percentage in seven starts last year, Leland Irving's got some short-term value while Miikka Kiprusoff recovers from his lower-body injury.

Flames Turn To Irving

News: Leland Irving will start Thursday's game against the Blue Jackets, the Flames' official site reports.
Analysis: He'll be the Flames' go-to netminder as long as Miikka Kiprusoff is sidelined. At this point, there's no concrete timetable for the return of Kiprusoff, with the Flames' top keeper viewed as day-to-day. In the meantime, Danny Taylor will serve as Leland Irving's top backup.

Flames' Irving Fills In Tuesday

News: Leland Irving made six saves in relief of injured Miikka Kiprusoff Tuesday as the Flames defeated the Red Wings 4-1.
Analysis: It's unclear how long Kiprusoff will be out with his lower body injury, but Leland Irving will be the workhorse while Kipper is out. He played fairly well in the AHL earlier in the year, but is not on a great team and won't often be able to steal games the way Kiprusoff can.

Flames' Irving Wins Backup Spot

News: Leland Irving beat out Henrik Karlsson for the backup goalie position, the Calgary Sun reports.
Analysis: Karlsson is a little bit older but Leland Irving seems to have more potential, which likely was the deciding factor. The Flames are still searching for a successor to the aging Miikka Kiprusoff, and they're hoping Irving can be that guy.

Flames' Irving Placed On Waivers

News: Leland Irving was placed on waivers along with Henrik Karlsson Thursday, the Flames' Twitter account reports.
Analysis: It appears Calgary is hoping another team makes its backup goalie decision for it, as the Flames are still debating whether Leland Irving or Karlsson will be their No. 2. Neither Irving nor Karlsson played particularly well in 2011-12, so the decision could really go either way.

Leland Irving: To Compete For Backup Job

News: Leland Irving was called up by Calgary on Saturday, as he will compete with Henrik Karlsson to back up Miikka Kiprusoff to begin the season, the Calgary Sun reports.
Analysis: With a shortened season and many back-to-backs, the Flames will need more contributions from their backup goalies, as they have only averaged three wins a season for the past seven seasons. Karlsson has impressed coaches in the offseason with his training regimen, but Leland Irving has played relatively well for AHL Abbotsford. The Flames will have to make a quick decision, as the season starts Jan. 20.

Leland Irving: Returns To AHL

News: Leland Irving has signed an AHL-level professional tryout agreement with the Abbotsford Heat, the Calgary Sun reports.
Analysis: The Flames' backup goalie was not originally signed to the Heat, but because he finished the season with them, he was able to sign a tryout without having to clear waivers. If the NHL season ever starts, Leland Irving will likely spend much of his time as Miikka Kiprusoff's backup at the NHL level.

News: Leland Irving has signed a one-year, two-way extension with the Flames.
Analysis: He'll battle Henrik Karlsson for the joy of riding the pine behind Mikka Kiprusoff.

Calgary Sends Irving To AHL

News: Leland Irving was assigned to the AHL on Saturday, Flames.NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Leland Irving had a rough go of it Friday, allowing three goals on 25 shots, but he has still been promising for the most part since his NHL debut in December.

Flames' Irving The Starter Friday

News: Leland Irving will start Friday against the Oilers, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Leland Irving was called up Wednesday specifically for this game and will likely get sent back down right after. He should have a good shot at a win with Calgary's offense humming and Edmonton struggling.

Flames' Irving Likely To Start Friday

News: Leland Irving will likely get the start Friday against Edmonton, according to the Calgary Herald.
Analysis: Friday is the second game of a back-to-back, which usually means Miikka Kiprusoff gets a night off. Leland Irving is 1-2-3 on the season with a 3.22 goals against average.

Flames' Irving Recalled From Abbotsford

News: The Flames recalled Leland Irving from AHL Abbotsford Wednesday, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Leland Irving's call-up comes on the eve of the start of a back-to-back set of games, which means Irving has a chance to start Friday against Edmonton. The Flames have been riding Miikka Kiprusoff hard lately and may give Irving a chance against the Oilers, who sport the second-worst record in the NHL.

Flames Return Irving to Abbotsford

News: The Flames have returned Leland Irving to Abbotsford of the AHL according to a team release.
Analysis: Leland Irving played Friday night against the Ducks, making 38 saves in a 3-2 loss. He has played six NHL games this season and registered his first ever win December 23, making 29 saves in a 3-1 win in Vancouver. He has a .916 save percentage and a 3.22 goals against average with a 1-2-3 record. While Miikka Kiprusoff will be used heavily in the coming weeks, there's a shot Irving could get a spot call-up to start over Henrik Karlsson if Kiprusoff needs a breather.
