Canucks' Matthias Poised To Return Saturday

News: Shawn Matthias (head) is expected to return to the lineup Saturday against the Rangers.
Analysis: Shawn Matthias practiced Friday and took rushes with the third line during Saturday's morning skate, which should be enough to clear him to play after he was sidelined for the previous two games. The winger has six goals and 11 points in 27 games on the campaign.

Canucks' Matthias Out Of Lineup

News: Updating previous reports, the Canucks will sit Shawn Matthias (head) for Tuesday's game in Montreal.
Analysis: It sounds like he was close enough to be a consideration, but instead the team will play it safe with the veteran and insert Nicklas Jensen into the lineup instead.

Matthias Set To Return For Canucks

News: Canucks appears to be in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Montreal after missing Sunday's game with a head injury.
Analysis: Shawn Matthias is set to play on the third line with Linden Vey and Brad Richardson.

Canucks' Matthias Questionable For Tuesday

News: Shawn Matthias (head) was on the ice for the Canucks' morning skate but remains questionable to play Tuesday versus the Canadiens, Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province reports.
Analysis: Coach Willie Desjardins said he had no update on the condition of Shawn Matthias, who was held out of Sunday's game against the Senators after taking a shot to the head a night earlier. The Canucks' team doctors will likely evaluate Matthias as the day progresses to determine if he's suffering from any concussion-like symptoms before determining whether or not he'll be able to suit up Tuesday night.

Canucks' Matthias (Head) Will Not Play Sunday

News: Shawn Matthias (head) will not play Sunday against the Senators.
Analysis: Shawn Matthias took an elbow from Stephane Robidas on Saturday, causing him to leave the game in the second period. The Canucks have not released an update on the situation, but Matthias will not play Sunday and should be considered questionable for Tuesday's game.

Matthias Notches Two Points For Canucks

News: Shawn Matthias scored a goal and chipped in an assist in Thursday's 3-0 win over Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Never known for his scoring prowess, Shawn Matthias has nonetheless been hot lately, scoring four goals in the last five games and adding two assists while going plus-6 in that span. His shot rate still isn't special -- he's averaging less than two per game -- but it's still better than it's ever been in his career, so he could at least ramp up into the 30-point range for the first time.

Matthias Adds Goal And Assist To Continue Streak

News: Shawn Matthias tallied a goal and an assist, firing off five shots in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Red Wings.
Analysis: That's now three straight games with a goal for Shawn Matthias, though he scored just two goals before this streak. He's got nine points on the season (five goals, four assists) and is on pace to top his old career-high of 24 points, but not much more.

Canucks' Matthias Picks Up First Goal

News: Shawn Matthias scored his first of the season in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Avalanche.
Analysis: Shawn Matthias has recorded just north of 20 points in each of the last three seasons, and so far has three in his first 13 contests. Topping his career high of 24 seems like a possibility, but not too much more than that.

Canucks' Matthias Tallies Three Points

News: Shawn Matthias scored a goal, had two assists, and was a plus-3 against the Sabres on Sunday.
Analysis: This gives Shawn Matthias only 11 goals and 21 points in 68 games, and he's still a minus-1 on the season. He may set a career high in points this year, but that's only because his prior high is 24 points.

Matthias On Board For Vancouver

News: Shawn Matthias scored his first goal for Vancouver since the Roberto Luongo trade, tallying one of the Canucks' three goals in Friday's loss to Washington.
Analysis: Shawn Matthias has been seeing over 17 minutes per game since his arrival in Vancouver, but likely won't light up the scoreboard for the Canucks. He's a solid two-way player who is worth more to Vancouver than most rosters.

Matthias Shines In His Canucks Debut

News: Shawn Matthias impressed in his Canucks debut on Thursday, leading all players with seven shots on goal, while logging 16:24 of ice time.
Analysis: Though the Canucks lost 6-1, coach John Tortorella praised Shawn Matthias, saying the 26-year-old was probably the team's best forward on Thursday. He centered the third line against Dallas, winning nine of 14 draws. Matthias has nine goals and 16 points in 60 games this season, and should give a boost to a Canucks team that has lost 11 of their last 12 games.

Panthers Send Matthias To Canucks

News: Shawn Matthias was traded to the Canucks on Tuesday as a part of the Roberto Luongo deal, Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada reports.
Analysis: Shawn Matthias' inclusion in the deal is likely just for the purpose of making contracts match up in what amounts to mostly a salary dump for the Canucks. The 26-year-old had 16 points in 59 games with the Panthers and should occupy a bottom-six role for his new club.

Panthers' Matthias Tallies Three Points

News: Shawn Matthias scored two goals and had a helper versus the Islanders on Sunday. He also was a plus-3 and had two penalty minutes.
Analysis: Shawn Matthias has five points, and is a plus-5, in his last two games. However, that only gives him 16 points in 59 games this season, so this looks like nothing more than a nice little stretch.

Panthers' Matthias Returns To Lineup Thursday

News: Shawn Matthias played 9:56 in Thursday night's 6-3 loss to Toronto after missing Tuesday's game with an illness.
Analysis: Shawn Matthias has been an utter disappointment this year with only 10 points to show for 52 games played. He should remain on the free agent wire unless you're absolutely desperate. He is barely a viable option for daily leagues at the moment.

Panthers' Matthias Kept Out Tuesday

News: Shawn Matthias will miss Tuesday's game with the flu, George Richards of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Shawn Matthias was battling the illness at morning skate and will be held out with Tomas Kopecky (shoulder) returning from IR. Look for Matthias to be ready to play again before the week's out.

Panthers' Matthias Scores Goal In Loss Friday

News: Shawn Matthias scored his fourth goal of the season during the Panthers' 5-2 loss to Winnipeg on Friday.
Analysis: Shawn Matthias is not known for his goal-scoring abilities, but was given a golden opportunity when the Jets turned the puck over to him in their own zone and he came away with the unassisted tally. He now has four goals and five assists in 37 games this season.

Matthias Gets Two Helpers In Panthers' Win

News: Shawn Matthias tallied two assists in the Panthers' surprising 2-1 win over the Red Wings on Saturday.
Analysis: Shawn Matthias broke a seven-game scoring slump with the two helpers and now has seven points through 30 games. The 2013-14 season has been disappointing for the 25-year-old center thus far.

Matthias Finally Scores For Panthers

News: Shawn Matthias finally scored his first goal of the season on Sunday evening in a 4-3 shootout loss to Tampa Bay.
Analysis: The Panthers' leading goal scorer last season had been struggling through the first 10 games, only registering two assists. Shawn Matthias logged 17:05 minutes of ice on Sunday, by far his most in a game this season. If he continues to see regular top-six minutes, he'll be worth a speculative add in deeper formats.

Panthers' Matthias Slumping

News: Shawn Matthias is losing sleep over the fact that he has only registered two assists through the first 10 games this season.
Analysis: Despite leading the team in goals during the lockout shortened 2012-13 season, Shawn Matthias' ice time has been reduced to a fourth-line minutes. Matthias is a shoot-first player and will be hard pressed to produce playing with the likes of Jesse Winchester and Krys Barch.

Panthers' Matthias Ends Up Playing Thursday

News: Shawn Matthias (illness) skated 14:28, collecting one shot on goal and one hit in Thursday's 7-2 loss in Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Shawn Matthias was reportedly battling a flu bug on Thursday afternoon, but ended up dressing despite earlier reports that he would sit. Though he didn't put up any stats, he was one of the few Panthers to manage an even rating in the blowout loss.

Panthers' Matthias Likely Out Thursday

News: Shawn Matthias (illness) is not expected to play Thursday against the Lightning, Steve Goldstein of FOX Sports Florida reports.
Analysis: There was talk that Shawn Matthias would step up to the first line this season, but he's been working on the third line and has failed to record a point in three games thus far.

Matthias Expected To Be Panthers' First-Line Center

News: Shawn Matthias is set to inherit the Panthers' first-line center job this season, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: With the departure of Stephen Weiss to Detroit this off-season, the Panthers will look internally to fill their first-line void. Shawn Matthias put up 14 goals and 7 assists in the lockout shortened 2012-13 season, and should see an increase in production if he centers Jonathan Huberdeau and Kris Versteeg on Florida's top line.

Panthers Hold On To Matthias

News: Shawn Matthias has signed a 2-year, $3 million contract to remain with the Florida Panthers, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie
Analysis: Shawn Matthias has 30 goals over the last three seasons but he's a versatile forward that Florida uses in all situations. Expect his production to be in the 20-30 point range for the Kitties next fall.

Panthers' Mattias: Two More Points

News: Mattias picked up two assists Saturday and has seven points (five goals, two assists) in his last five games.
Analysis: He now has 19 points in 38 games and is just five points from tying his career mark of 24 from last season. His pace this year would net him 41 in a full NHL season and he might be a decent late-round pick-up in next year's draft.

Panthers' Matthias: 11 Goals In Last 16 Games

News: Mattias scored two goals, including one on the power play, in Saturday's 3-2 overtime win over the Devils. He has a career-high 14 goals this season and 11 in the past 16 games.
Analysis: He's on a three-game goal streak and is hotter than he's been since his junior days skating with P.K. Subban on the Belleville Bulls. You have to roll him while he's sizzling -- it can't last, but it's the kind of surge that can help you push toward a title.
