New Jersey's Gionta Set To Return

News: Stephen Gionta (lower back) is slated to play Thursday against the Lightning.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta, who returns after missing three games with a lower-body injury, is only an option in deeper formats, however, with 12 points and 12 PIM in 59 games to date.

New Jersey's Gionta Remains Sidelined

News: Stephen Gionta (lower back) won't play Tuesday against the Rangers, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta expects to travel with New Jersey to Florida where the team plays Tampa Bay on Thursday and the Panthers on Saturday, but such an outcome has yet to be confirmed. In any case, Gionta, who last suited up March 31, is only an option in super-deep formats, with 12 points and 12 PIM through 59 games this season.

New Jersey's Gionta Targets Tuesday Return

News: Stephen Gionta (lower back) hopes to return to action Tuesday against the Rangers, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta, who has missed the last two games with muscle spasms in his lower back, was able to practice Monday, so he's a candidate to suit up Tuesday, that is, if his back responds well to Monday's activities. "We'll see how I feel in the morning," Gionta said Monday. "First time I had contact, so we'll take it from there."

Devils' Gionta Out Again Saturday

News: Stephen Gionta (lower back) will not play Saturday against the Rangers, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: The Devils were never seriously expecting Stephen Gionta to suit up over the weekend, but his injury at least seems to remain in the day-to-day category for now. The forward was able to skate on his own earlier Saturday and indicated that he felt strong afterward. He may be a candidate to play Tuesday, when the Rangers and Devils will have a rematch in New Jersey.

New Jersey's Gionta Sidelined

News: Stephen Gionta will miss Friday's game against Montreal with a lower-back injury, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Given that Stephen Gionta hasn't skated since sustaining the injury on Tuesday, he looks iffy, at best, for Saturday's game against the Rangers. Per the report, Gionta's absence could pave the way for Reid Boucher to return to the team's forward mix Friday.

Devils' Gionta Absent From Practice With Injury

News: Stephen Gionta missed Wednesday's practice due to a lower-back injury, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta sustained the injury in Tuesday's loss to the Blue Jackets. The Devils will wait and see if he can get back on the ice Thursday before making a decision on the forward's status for their weekend back-to-back set.

Devils' Gionta Collects Two Points In Win

News: Stephen Gionta picked up a goal and an assist in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Flyers.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta has actually been getting on the scoresheet somewhat regularly since missing nearly two months, collecting four points in his last four contests. Even after that stretch though, the 31-year-old has just 11 points in 48 games, so there isn't much value from a fantasy perspective.

Devils Activate Gionta For Tuesday's Game

News: Stephen Gionta (hand) was activated from injured reserve ahead of Tuesday's game against the Sabres, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta had been out since Dec. 29 with the broken hand. The forward has only three goals and six points in 38 games this season and won't carry much value as a member of the Devils' bottom-six forward crew.

New Jersey's Gionta Set To Return Tuesday

News: Stephen Gionta (hand) is slated to play Tuesday against the Sabres, according to Tom Gulitti of The Record.
Analysis: With Stephen Gionta in line to come off IR later Tuesday, the report relays that Martin Havlat and Michael Ryder will be among New Jersey's scratches against Buffalo.

New Jersey's Gionta Progressing

News: Stephen Gionta (hand) has been cleared for contact, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta -- who last suited up on Dec. 29 -- is thus nearing a return to action, with his status for Tuesday's game against Buffalo likely to emerge as a game-day call.

Devils' Gionta Not Cleared For Contact Yet

News: Stephen Gionta (hand) hasn't been cleared for contact yet and will not be available for the Devils' two-game road trip that concludes Saturday in Nashville, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta practiced for about 15 minutes after skating prior to Wednesday's session, but it appears his hand hasn't fully healed yet. He'll remain in New Jersey during the road trip and continue to work out, but a return shouldn't be considered forthcoming until he resumes taking contact.

Devils' Gionta Resumes Skating

News: Stephen Gionta (broken hand) resumed skating earlier this week, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: The on-ice work was in all likelihood just for conditioning purposes, as it shouldn't have much bearing on when Stephen Gionta might return from the hand injury. Instead, how much progress Gionta makes in his stick-handling and shooting will likely dictate when he's cleared for full-contact practices, and eventually a return to game action.

Devils' Gionta (Hand) To Remain Off Ice 2-3 Weeks

News: Stephen Gionta (hand) is expected to remain off the ice for two or three more weeks, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta has been sidelined since Dec. 29 after breaking his hand in a game upon blocking a shot. The fourth-liner continues to wear a soft case and hasn't been cleared to resume skating, which will remain the case until he notices a little more healing. Expect a mid-February return in a best-case scenario.

Devils' Gionta Avoids Surgery, Still Out Long-Term

News: Stephen Gionta (hand) will likely be sidelined another three-to-five weeks, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta won't require surgery on his broken hand, but is only about a week into his four-to-six-week expected absence, so he won't be returning to the ice anytime soon.

Devils' Gionta Placed On IR

News: Stephen Gionta (broken hand) has been placed on injured reserve, retroactive to Dec. 29.
Analysis: The transaction is merely a formality, as Stephen Gionta's broken hand will obviously keep him out for at least the next few weeks. The team has yet to release a timetable.

Devils' Gionta Breaks Hand Monday

News: Stephen Gionta suffered a broken hand in Monday's game against the Penguins, The Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta is facing an extended absence due to the injury. He will see a specialist, who will determine exactly how long he will be sidelined.

Devils' Gionta Returns To Action

News: Stephen Gionta (foot) returned to the lineup Saturday against the Capitals, skating for 12:01 in the loss.
Analysis: The Devils labeled Stephen Gionta as a game-time decision for the second straight contest, but he ended up suiting up again to allow the Devils to roll out a full four lines. The center only has four points in 27 games and offers and is usually tasked with pitching in on the Devils' penalty kill.

Devils' Gionta A Game-Time Decision Saturday

News: Stephen Gionta will be a game-time decision for Saturday's game against the Capitals, Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: While Stephen Gionta was able to tough it out Thursday, it seems the team is considering sitting him down as to not aggravate the injury. The 31-year-old took a shot off his foot Tuesday and was held out of Saturday's morning skate.

Devils' Gionta Plays Through Injury, Scores Goal

News: Despite being questionable for Thursday's game against the Leafs due to a foot injury, Stephen Gionta slotted into the lineup and scored his first goal of the year. He went plus-1 and laid four hits in 11:28 of ice time.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta doesn't provide much offense from the Devils' fourth line, but it's nice for the team that he's healthy enough to resume his grinding, typically defensively oriented role.

Devils' Gionta To Attempt To Play Thursday

News: Stephen Gionta (foot) will attempt to play Thursday against the Maple Leafs, Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta didn't look to be operating at 100 percent while nursing the foot injury during morning skate, but with the Devils missing a number of players at forward Thursday, he'll attempt to tough it out. Fortunately, X-rays cleared Gionta of any sort of fracture to his foot, but because he's still presumably dealing with some pain, look for him to see light minutes on the Devils' fourth line.

Devils' Gionta A Possibility For Thursday

News: Coach Pete DeBoer said there is a possibility that Stephen Gionta (foot) will play Thursday against the Maple Leafs, but it appears rather unlikely that will happen, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta was on the ice before the Devils held their morning skate to test out his ailing foot, but left the ice just a few minutes later, suggesting he's not ready to resume playing. The Devils will revisit his condition closer to game time, but if he joins Jaromir Jagr (illness) and Patrik Elias (groin) in the press box, the Devils will have to make due with only 10 healthy forwards.

Devils' Gionta Removed After Taking Shot To Foot

News: Stephen Gionta left Tuesday's game against the Penguins after taking a shot to the foot in the first period and will not return, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: In a physical match between the Devils and Penguins, Stephen Gionta was one of three New Jersey forwards to exit with an injury. He skated just 2:02 before briefly returned to the bench in the second period, but after testing out his foot on the ice during a stoppage in play, he retreated to the locker room. Expect team doctors to evaluate his foot for a possible fracture, with the Devils likely to provide an update on his condition prior to Thursday's game versus the Maple Leafs.

Devils' Gionta Gets Two Assists

News: Stephen Gionta assisted on two scores in Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the Penguins.
Analysis: The points were Stephen Gionta's first of the season, but the Devils' collapse midway through the second period prevented them from having much of an impact in the blowout loss. Gionta's standing on the Devils' checking line will make two-point games like this an extreme rarity.

Devils Sign Gionta

News: The Devils signed Stephen Gionta to a two-year, $1.7 million contract Tuesday, Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta recorded four goals and seven assists in 66 games with the Devils last season, and will return to his depth role again in 2014-15.

Devils' Gionta Will Play Saturday

News: Stephen Gionta (ankle) will play Saturday against Carolina, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta missed a week of action, but he should see plenty of ice time with the Devils hurting up front. Patrik Elias, Adam Henrique, and Jacob Josefson suffered injuries Friday and are all out Saturday.
