Oystrick Signs With Phoenix

News: The Coyotes have signed Oystrick to a one-year, two-way contract, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Oystrick played nine games with the Blues this past season, recording three points. He spent most of the year with AHL Peoria, registering a 15-30-45 line with 125 penalty minutes in 61 games. The 28-year-old gives the Coyotes some blue-line depth, but thus far he's been unable to duplicate his AHL production at the NHL level, with 15 points in 65 games to date.

Analysis: Oystrick was recalled on an emergency basis Tuesday and netted a goal in Wednesday's loss to Anaheim. But with Tyson Strachan back in the fold and Nikita Nikitin likely returning soon, Oystrick was no longer needed.

Blues Send Oystrick to Peoria

News: Oystrick was sent to Peoria by the Blues on Friday, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: He picked up an assist in his Blues debut on Oct. 30, but hasn't done much since in seven games with a pair of assists and nine penalty minutes. Oystrick will likely get recalled again later this season when the Blues need additional help on the blue line.

Blues Recall Oystrick

News: Oystrick was recalled Wednesday with Carlo Colaiacovo (concussion) going on IR, J.P. Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: He'll reprise his role as an extra option on the blue line while Colaiacovo faces a potentially long absence given that he's missed extensive time in the past due to a concussion.

Oystrick Called Up By Blues

News: The Blues recalled Oystrick from AHL Peoria on Wednesday, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Oystrick takes the roster spot of Roman Polak, who will undergo wrist surgery Thursday. Oystrick played well in the preseason, but do not expect him to see enough ice time to be a fantasy factor.

Blues Assign Oystrick

News: The Blues assigned Oystrick to Peoria of the American Hockey League, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: While Oystrick starting the season with the Rivermen isn't a surprise in the bigger picture, he had played well during training camp. Ultimately, though, the Blues want one of their young defenders (Alex Pietrangelo or Ian Cole) to have a spot.

Oystrick called up by Ducks

News: The Ducks have called up D Nathan Oystrick.
Analysis: Obtained in a trade with the Thrashers back in early March, Oystrick has played in 53 NHL games and 43 AHL games this season, totaling a respectable 35 points. He might factor in Anaheim's 2010-2011, but for now has no Fantasy value.

Ducks get Oystrick for Artyukhin

News: The Ducks have acquired D Nathan Oystrick from the Thrashers, along with a conditional pick in the 2011 draft, in exchange for RW Evgeny Artyukhin.
Analysis: Oystrick has played the entire 2009-10 season in the AHL, producing 23 points in 41 games. He has 12 points in 53 games with Atlanta. Artyukhin had nine points in 37 games for the Ducks this season. At 6-4, 254, the 26-year-old Russian is known more for throwing his sizable frame around than anything, although he has been behaving himself a little more this season. Artukhin has some minimal value in super-deep seasonal formats that reward bad behavior, while Oystrick remains barely worth worrying about in Fantasy play.

News: The Thrashers have assigned D Nathan Oystrick to the AHL and D Chad Denny to the ECHL.

News: The Thrashers have waived D Nathan Oystrick, with the intention of assigning him to the minors.
Analysis: Oystrick played 53 games for Atlanta last season, but was apparently the odd man out this training camp. Continue to ignore him in all Fantasy formats for the time being.

Oystrick has interesting offseason

News: The Sports Xchange reports Thrashers D Nathan Oystrick didn't have the typical summer that most hockey players experience. Oystrick, who was adopted in Canada as an infant, tracked down his biological mother in Saskatchewan and had a reunion with her and her family in Atlanta. Oystrick told the Thrashers' Website that the reunion was "awkward" and "emotional," but "very exciting and very cool." When he wasn't spending time with his biological mother, Oystrick got married and dropped about 10 pounds during offseason workouts.
Analysis: Oystrick finally made his NHL debut in 2008-09 after having two very successful seasons in the AHL. It's no surprise he got the call because his AHL coach -- John Anderson -- spent his first season behind the Atlanta bench last season. Oystrick had an up-and-down season as he struggled to adjust to the defensive side of the NHL. He posted four goals and 12 points in 53 games, but didn't get to show off his offensive skills because his defense was lacking. Oystrick will likely get a second chance at the NHL in 2009-10, but he still has very little Fantasy appeal.

Oystrick not benched for poor play

News: The Sports Xchange reports Thrashers D Nathan Oystrick was scratched Tuesday against the Capitals to make room for Clay Wilson in the lineup. Coach John Anderson said his decision to bench Oystrick, who has one goal and two assists in his past 10 games with a plus-6 rating, had nothing to do with his play of late. Instead, it was simply Oystrick's turn to sit out.
Analysis: The rookie defenseman has had his ups-and-downs in 2008-09. He first struggled defensively upon his recall from the minors and then played solid two-way hockey for a stretch. Anderson has stuck with him since he is familiar with the Canadian from their times at Chicago of the AHL. Oystrick still has little to no Fantasy appeal when healthy.

Oystrick has goal taken away

News: The Sports Xchange reports Atlanta appeared to take the lead early in the first period Saturday against the Panthers when a shot by defenseman Nathan Oystrick trickled past Florida goalie Tomas Vokoun. However, Chris Thorburn was whistled for goaltender interference. The Thrashers killed the subsequent penalty, one of the few positive things they did all game.
Analysis: Oystrick has been denied a point in 12 straight games and is minus-13 in that span. The rookie was one of Atlanta's most effective blue liners from late November to mid-December, but ever since Mathieu Schneider and Zach Bogosian returned from injuries his overall game has gone in the tank. Oystrick is still seeing about 12-15 minutes per game, but has little Fantasy value.

Oystrick makes rookie mistake

News: The Sports Xchange reports for most of the first half of the season, rookie defenseman Nathan Oystrick has been a pleasant surprise for Atlanta. However, in the past two games, Oystrick has made mistakes that define him exactly for what he is: a rookie. Two nights after Oystrick barely got a piece of Eric Staal as the powerful Hurricanes forward flew past him en route to his third goal of the game, Oystrick drifted out of position for a brief second as Michael Ryder slipped behind him and scored Sunday's game-winning goal for the Bruins. With Boston's David Krejci carrying the puck down the left side into the Atlanta zone, veteran defenseman Mathieu Schneider had the play covered. Then, Oystrick slid over the Schneider's side of the ice to offer some help he didn't need. Krejci quickly realized the opening Oystrick had created, pulled up and slid a perfect pass to Ryder, who broke hard to the far side of the net and tapped the puck past Kari Lehtonen.
Analysis: On the bright side, Oystrick's slight gaffe was one of the few mistakes Atlanta made all night. Facing a team that has won eight straight, Atlanta actually out-shot the Bruins and suffered from yet another series of bad bounces. If there is such a thing as a good loss, this one would qualify. Oystrick doesn't have a point in six games and has also cooled off offensively after a good run from late November to mid-December. With Zach Bogosian on the verge of returning, Oystrick could lose some PT due to poor play. Oystrick still has limited Fantasy appeal.

Oystrick performing well for Atlanta

News: Thrashers D Nathan Oystrick picked up a goal and an assist in Saturday's loss to Boston. He cut it to 2-1 with 38 seconds left in the period when he took an errant pass from Todd White and slapped it in from the point. Oystrick has recorded eight points in his last 10 games since registering his first NHL point in Nov. 25.
Analysis: The rookie has easily been Atlanta's best-performing defensemen since going scoreless in his first 11 career games. He has really benefited from extra playing time with Mathieu Schneider and Zach Bogosian injured. Oystrick and coach John Anderson had some success together in the AHL, but Oystrick still has limited Fantasy appeal since his production could drop as soon as everyone is healthy.

Oystrick getting rewarded with more PT

News: The Sports Xchange reports D Nathan Oystrick continues to gain confidence and is being used by Thrashers coaches in more crucial situations. He rewarded the coaching staff for their confidence in him with an assist in Saturday's win against the Islanders and finished with a plus-2 rating over 17:21 of ice time.
Analysis: Oystrick has two goals and three assists in his last seven games and continues to improve with Zach Bogosian out of the lineup. When Bogosian is finally healthy, Oystrick might remain in the lineup since he has been playing well. Oystrick and coach John Anderson had some success together in the AHL, but Oystrick still has limited Fantasy appeal.

Oystrick starts goal streak

News: Thrashers D Nathan Oystrick scored his second goal in as many days Friday against the Predators. It was just his second goal of the season. He added an assist and has had at least one point in each of his last three games.
Analysis: Oystrick has attempted just one shot in each of the three games, he was just fortunate that two of them went in. He is worth taking a flier on in deeper formats, but is still just a player to be stashed until he can prove this has been more than just a fluke.

Oystrick gets chance to shine

News: The Sports Xchange reports with rookie defenseman Zach Bogosian on injured reserve, rookie Nathan Oystrick is being given a chance to prove he can handle a full-time roster spot. Because the Thrashers haven't called up a seventh defenseman from the minors, the job is Oystrick's to lose.
Analysis: Oystrick played for 19 minutes Saturday against the Devils, but didn't record a point and finished at minus-2. Oystrick has spent the last three seasons in the AHL and has shown some decent offensive talents. Still, he is more of a wait-and-see Fantasy project.

Oystrick makes mistake in debut

News: The Sports Xchange reports maybe Thrashers rookie D Zach Bogosian isn't so bad after all. With the 18-year-old Bogosian, who took three penalties in his first two NHL games, sitting in the press box for Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Wild, Nathan Oystrick stepped in to test his NHL skills for the first time. Oystrick, playing alongside veteran Mathieu Schneider, failed the test. With Atlanta trailing 2-1 midway through the third, Oystrick jumped too early as he attempted to keep a Minnesota clearing pass in the offensive zone. After the puck sailed over his outstretched arm, Oystrick lost his footing and fell, leading to a breakaway goal by Antti Miettinen.
Analysis: While Bryan Little scored moments later to pull Atlanta back within one goal, the damage had already been done. Oystrick said he lost sight of the puck in the mostly empty seats of Philips Arena and was only able to get a fingertip on it. While coach John Anderson has yet to set his lineup for Thursday's game against New Jersey, Bogosian will likely return, sending Oystrick back to the press box. Oystrick has spent the last three seasons in the AHL and has shown some decent offensive talents. However, Oystrick has to master his defensive skills if he wants more ice time. It's still safe to ignore him in Fantasy.

Three rookie Thrashers could make roster

News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that F Mike Hoffman, D Zach Bogosian and D Nathan Oystrick are on the verge of making the Thrashers roster. None of them have played in an NHL game.
Analysis: Bogosian was the No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft and scored over a point a game last year in the OHL. He's definitely worth taking in the later rounds of drafts as a nice sleeper. The other two guys don't have much Fantasy value off the bat.
