Pens' Greiss Drops Spot Start

News: Thomas Greiss took the loss Saturday against the Islanders, yielding four goals on 35 shots.
Analysis: Called upon to relieve Marc-Andre Fleury for the back end of a home-and-home set with the Islanders, Thomas Greiss was able to keep his team in the game for the first 40 minutes, but came unhinged in the third period. He allowed the Islanders to pot three unanswered goals, effectively turning a close game into a blowout. Saturday's outing was only the fourth of the season for Greiss, who doesn't figure to see much consistent action behind Fleury.

Pens Expected To Start Greiss On Saturday

News: Thomas Greiss will start Saturday against the Islanders, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: No. 1 goalie Marc-Andre Fleury will be in the net for Friday's home tilt with the Islanders, allowing Thomas Greiss to pick up the start in the second game of the back-to-back in Long Island. Despite being used sparingly this season, Greiss has fared well in his three prior outings, going 2-0-1 with a 1.95 GAA and .938 save percentage.

Pens' Greiss Earns Win In Rare Appearance

News: Thomas Greiss turned aside 30 of 31 shots in Friday's 2-1 win over the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Thomas Greiss was a rock in just his third start of the season, not allowing a goal until the third period. The Penguins' backup improved to 2-0-1 in this one and should continue to be one of the league's most dependable second stringers whenever he gives workhorse Marc-Andre Fleury a rest. The former Shark also owns a tidy 1.96 GAA and .938 save percentage this season.

Penguins' Greiss Gets The Nod Friday

News: Thomas Greiss will be between the pipes for Friday's game against the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Regular goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury will get a night off after allowing five goals in his last start, and Thomas Greiss will get the start in his place. Greiss has not played since Nov. 4 and has started just twice all season, but the Penguins will hope he can shake off the rust quickly facing a Toronto squad that lit the lamp 16 times over its last three games.

Pens' Greiss Leads With Positive Election Returns

News: Thomas Greiss made 33 saves in a 4-1 win over Minnesota on Tuesday.
Analysis: The win was the German's first in a Pittsburgh sweater. Earlier on Tuesday, Pens coach Mike Johnston said that he expects Thomas Greiss to start four or five games in November. Fantasy owners in daily leagues take note.

Penguins' Greiss Set To Start Tuesday

News: Thomas Greiss is on track to start Tuesday's game against the Wild, according to the Penguins' official website.
Analysis: Regular goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury is winless against the Wild in five career starts, and the Penguins begin a five-game road trip Tuesday, so head coach Mike Johnston apparently felt it was an opportune time to give his backup goalie a start. Thomas Greiss will be tested by a Minnesota squad that currently sits third in the NHL with 3.40 goals per game.

Pens' Greiss Blows Late Lead, Loses In OT

News: Thomas Greiss blew a two-goal lead in the final three minutes of the third period Thursday against the Red Wings, then lost in overtime. He ended up allowing four goals on 31 shots.
Analysis: A rough season debut for Thomas Greiss, who looked to be cruising to a relatively easy win until Henrik Zetterberg went to work turning the game around for the Wings. The Penguins gave Marc-Andre Fleury their first five starts of the year and will likely return Fleury to the net for Saturday's game in Nashville.

Pens Confirm Greiss As Thursday Starter

News: Coach Mike Johnston confirmed Thomas Greiss will start Thursday against the Islanders.
Analysis: Thomas Greiss will replace Marc-Andre Fleury in goal, but the Penguins will otherwise skate the same lineup they used Wednesday against Philadelphia. The Red Wings will counter with Jimmy Howard as their goaltender.

Pens' Greiss Expected To Play Thursday

News: Thomas Greiss is expected to make the start in goal Thursday against the Red Wings, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: With Mike Johnston pledging last week that he'd give Thomas Greiss a start at some point during the Penguins' road swing, Thursday would sound like an ideal opportunity for the backup to see action, with the team playing the second game of a back-to-back set. If Greiss indeed plays Thursday, it would mark the Penguins debut for the netminder, who was inked to a one-year contract in the offseason after posting a 10-8-5 record, 2.29 GAA and .920 save percentage with the Coyotes in 2013-14.

Pens' Greiss May Have To Wait Until Week 3

News: Coach Mike Johnston hinted Wednesday that Marc-Andre Fleury could start both Thursday against Dallas and Saturday versus the Islanders.
Analysis: Thomas Greiss may have to wait until the team plays three times in four days during Week 3 before making his season debut. The backup had a strong preseason but Pittsburgh has had a light schedule thus far and Fleury has looked good.

Pens' Greiss To Get 20 Starts, At Least

News: Thomas Greiss could start between 20 and 25 games for the Penguins in 2014-15.
Analysis: Head coach Mike Johnston stated Tuesday that he wants Marc-Andre Fleury to start about 60 games. Thomas Greiss started 20 contests for the Coyotes last year, compiling a 10-8-5 mark with a 2.29 GAA and .920 save percentage. New GM Jim Rutherford hand-picked Greiss to serve as Pittsburgh's backup -- pushing Jeff Zatkoff out the door -- making it entirely possible that Greiss sees even more than 20 games in goal for the Pens.

Pens' Greiss Claims Backup Job

News: With the Penguins placing Jeff Zatkoff on waivers Saturday, Thomas Greiss has won the backup goalie job.
Analysis: Thomas Greiss generally outplayed Zatkoff both last season (10-8-5, 2.29 GAA, .920 save percentage for the Coyotes) and in the preseason, sealing his victory in the job battle. While he doesn't figure to see much action behind Marc-Andre Fleury, Greiss could be worthy of using in leagues that allow daily roster moves, which would allow fantasy owners to take advantage of the few occasions he starts against inferior competition.

Pens' Greiss Outperforms Zatkoff On Monday

News: Thomas Greiss stopped eight of nine shots and outplayed fellow backup Jeff Zatkoff on Monday.
Analysis: The performance cemented what was pretty much a foregone conclusion that Thomas Greiss would win the job over Zatkoff. Greiss went 10-8-5 with a 2.29 GAA and .920 save percentage for the Sharks last year. His peripherals might take a hit but he should be a good source for wins whenever he plays.

Pens' Greiss Gets Chance Tuesday

News: Thomas Greiss will start in goal Monday with Jeff Zatkoff taking over in the middle of the second period, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: The two tenders are in competition to back up starter Marc-Andre Fleury. While Thomas Greiss appears to have the upper hand -- new GM Jim Rutherford brought him in over the summer, Tuesday will help determine who starts the year in Pittsburgh.

Penguins Sign Greiss

News: The Penguins signed Thomas Greiss to a one-year, $1 million deal Tuesday.
Analysis: Thomas Greiss went 10-8-5 with a 2.29 GAA and a save percentage of .920 with the Coyotes last season. He'll back up Marc-Andre Fleury in Pittsburgh next season.

Greiss Getting Lots Of Free Agent Interest

News: Eight teams have reached out to Thomas Greiss' agent, reports Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic. He becomes a free agent on July 1.
Analysis: It's hard to think those interested teams are looking for a starter. Thomas Greiss is a very good backup and it looks like he's as good as gone from the Phoenix ... err ... Arizona Coyotes.

Coyotes' Greiss Stops 16 In Win

News: Thomas Greiss made 16 saves on 17 shots in a win over the Stars on Sunday.
Analysis: When Mike Smith went down with an injury, things fell apart in net for the Coyotes, even though Thomas Greiss' overall numbers were good. However, Smith will be back starting next season.

Coyotes' Greiss Solid In Loss

News: Thomas Greiss allowed just two goals on 23 shots Thursday against the Preds, but the Coyotes scored none to support him.
Analysis: Despite the solid outing, that's now six consecutive losses -- evenly split between regulation and overtime -- for Thomas Greiss, whose last win came two weeks ago on March 27. The Coyotes are in desperation mode now, and would surely love to get Mike Smith back in goal, which could in theory happen as soon as their next game, Saturday against the Sharks.

Coyotes Roll Will Greiss

News: Thomas Greiss is expected to start Thursday's game against the Predators, the Coyotes' official site reports.
Analysis: With Mike Smith still out, according to Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic, Thomas Greiss will continue to man the Phoenix net as the team continues to chase a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Coyotes' Greiss Loses Fifth Straight

News: Thomas Greiss surrendered four goals on 30 shots during Tuesday's overtime loss in Columbus.
Analysis: This is the fifth consecutive loss for Thomas Greiss, though at least he and the Coyotes have taken three of those games to overtime. Mike Smith is back to practicing fully, and with Phoenix two points out of the West's final playoff spot, they have to be planning to roll Smith out there as soon as he's ready.

Coyotes Stick With Greiss On Tuesday

News: Thomas Greiss is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Blue Jackets, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Though Thomas Greiss has lost four straight decisions, he'll continue to man the Coyotes' net Tuesday, with Mike Smith still day-to-day.

Coyotes' Greiss Loses Fourth Straight Friday

News: Thomas Greiss stopped 24 of 26 shots but allowed the only goal of the overtime shootout and lost to the Oilers 3-2 on Friday.
Analysis: While Thomas Greiss has now lost four-straight games, he's only allowed nine goals over that span. He'll continue to get the nod until top goaltender Mike Smith is healthy enough to play.

Coyotes' Greiss Drops Third Straight

News: Thomas Greiss took a third straight loss Wednesday, allowing four goals on 32 shots against the Kings.
Analysis: Thomas Greiss had been generally good even in defeat in his previous four starts in place of the injured Mike Smith, but Wednesday's performance wasn't one of his better efforts. It certainly didn't help matters that his teammates weren't able to muster many shots, attempting just 17 to the Kings' 32.

Coyotes Going With Greiss On Wednesday

News: Thomas Greiss will start Wednesday against the Kings.
Analysis: Thomas Greiss will be making his fifth straight start and his second in as many nights, as the Coyotes look to secure a critical win over the Kings. The German netminder took a tough shootout loss Tuesday against the Jets, but has otherwise been highly dependable since stepping in for the injured Mike Smith (lower-body). He's posted a save percentage above .920 in each of his last four starts.
