#Pens Greiss Gets Big Win Saturday

News: Thomas Greiss made 21 saves in a 4-2 win over St. Louis on Saturday.
Analysis: The backup has struggled after a strong start and likely needed a good showing to keep his job. Prior to Saturday, Thomas Greiss had allowed three or more goals in eight of his last nine starts. He came up particularly big Saturday, stopping a Vladimir Tarasenko slapper with the Pens nursing an early 1-0 lead.

Penguins Go With Greiss Saturday

News: Thomas Greiss will get the start in net Saturday against the Blues, NHL.com's Lou Korac reports.
Analysis: Thomas Greiss faces an unfavorable matchup on Saturday, as the Blues average 3.05 goals scored per game, good for fifth best in the NHL. Greiss has gone 6-3-3 with a 2.88 GAA and a .906 save percentage through 13 games with the Penguins this season.

Pens' Greiss Allows Four, But Wins In Shootout

News: Thomas Greiss gave up four goals on 33 shots Thursday in Ottawa, but came away with a shootout win.
Analysis: Not the shiniest effort for Thomas Greiss, and his last two starts haven't been very good either. He's not making the concept of resting Marc-Andre Fleury a very attractive one for the Penguins.

Pens Confirm Greiss For Thursday Start

News: Thomas Greiss has been confirmed as the starter in goal for Thursday's game against the Senators.
Analysis: It will be Thomas Greiss' second career outing against the Senators. The goalie is coming off his worst outing of the season over the weekend against the Canucks, as he let in five goals on 27 shot attempts in defeat. That performance, along with his poor ratios on the season (2.80 GAA, .909 save percentage) make him an unattractive streaming option for Thursday's slate.

Pens' Greiss Expected To Play Thursday

News: Thomas Greiss is expected to receive the start in goal Thursday against the Senators, Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun reports.
Analysis: Coach Mike Johnston hasn't confirmed Thomas Greiss as Thursday's starter, but it's widely assumed he'll get the call after Marc-Andre Fleury manned the net during Wednesday's win over the Red Wings. Greiss has been limited to just 12 appearances this season, posting a 5-3-3 record and 2.80 GAA.

Pens' Greiss Struggles In Loss

News: Thomas Greiss gave up five goals on 27 shots in Saturday's loss to Vancouver.
Analysis: It was the first time all season Thomas Greiss has given up five goals, as he got lit up by a Canucks team coming off a 5-1 loss to San Jose. The 29-year-old owns a 5-3-3 record on the season with a .909 save percentage and 2.80 GAA. While Greiss has shown to be decent backup this season, his lackluster showing Saturday is just another reason the Penguins could rely even more on workhorse starter Marc-Andre Fleury in the future.

Pens' Greiss To Get Saturday Start

News: Thomas Greiss will pick up a start in goal Saturday against the Canucks.
Analysis: With coach Mike Johnston opting to use Fleury for the front end of the team's back-to-back Friday in Calgary, Thomas Greiss will man the net for the next came of the Penguins tour through Western Canada. It will mark Greiss' first action since the All-Star break, but he wasn't exactly used much prior to that layoff, either. He's made just 11 appearances behind Fleury this season, going 5-2-3 with a 2.60 GAA and .916 save percentage.

Greiss, Injury-Ravaged Pens Triumph Over Jets

News: Thomas Greiss stopped 19 of 22 as the Penguins overcame the absences of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to come away with a 5-3 win over the Jets on Tuesday.
Analysis: One heck of a way for the Pens to come out of the break, but not an impressive outing for Thomas Greiss, who let the Jets take a 3-2 lead before his offense came roaring back. He'll return to the bench Wednesday, as Marc-Andre Fleury will slot back into his typical spot in goal.

Penguins Go With Greiss Tuesday

News: Thomas Greiss is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Jets, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: With Thomas Greiss slated to start Tuesday's game, Marc-Andre Fleury is in line to get the nod for the Penguins on Wednesday against the Caps.

Penguins Could Turn To Greiss Tuesday

News: Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette suggests that Thomas Greiss is likely to start Tuesday's game against the Jets.
Analysis: Assuming Thomas Greiss does start Tuesday's game, then look for Marc-Andre Fleury to draw the nod on Wednesday against the Caps.

Pens' Greiss Plays Well In Tuesday Loss

News: Thomas Greiss stopped 37 of 40 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Flyers on Tuesday.
Analysis: The backup goalie played well and was a big factor in helping his team to a regulation tie. Thomas Greiss was making just his third start since Dec. 13, but his effort in Philadelphia might give coach Mike Johnston more confidence to deploy him more frequently.

Penguins Turn To Greiss On Tuesday

News: Thomas Greiss is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Flyers, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: With Thomas Greiss slated to start Tuesday game, look for Marc-Andre Fleury to draw the team's starting nod in net on Wednesday against Chicago.

Pens' Greiss Excels In Relief

News: Thomas Greiss stopped 13 of 14 shots in relief of Marc-Andre Fleury in Sunday's loss to the Rangers.
Analysis: The outcome was already decided by the time coach Mike Johnston removed Fleury from the game with 15 minutes remaining in the second period, as the Rangers had already raced to a 4-1 lead by that point. Thomas Greiss did well to put the clamps on the New York attack the rest of the way, and will likely get the net for a full game during one of the Pens' two contests next week. If Greiss gets the nod Tuesday against the struggling Flyers rather than Wednesday against the powerful Blackhawks, he'd make for an excellent streaming option.

Greiss Starting Sunday For Pens?

News: The Penguins won't decide who will start Sunday at home against the Rangers until after Friday's tilt on Long Island.
Analysis: Pens coach Mike Johnston said that Marc-Andre Fleury will start Friday. For his part, Thomas Greiss has made just three appearances since November. He allowed three goals on 35 shots most recently in a home win over Tampa Bay on Jan. 2.

Pens' Greiss Notches First Home Win On Friday

News: Thomas Greiss made 32 saves in a 6-3 win over Tampa Bay on Friday.
Analysis: The German goalie stopped 13 of 14 shots over the game's final 20 minutes to help preserve the victory. Thomas Greiss, who was making just his second home start of the season Friday, entered the contest with a 3-2-2 mark, 2.53 GAA and .919 save percentage.

Pens' Greiss To Make Friday Start

News: Thomas Greiss will receive the start in goal Friday against the Lightning, Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: It will be Thomas Greiss' first appearance post-mumps, as the netminder has been dealing with traces of the virus for around the past two weeks. He returned to active duty as the backup to Marc-Andre Fleury on Wednesday, but with the Penguins kicking off a back-to-back set Friday, Greiss will get a chance to return to the net. He's been one of the league's better number twos this season, going 3-2-2 with a 2.52 GAA and .919 save percentage over his seven appearances.

Penguins' Greiss Presumably Ready To Return

News: Thomas Greiss (illess) looks to be available for Wednesday's game against the Hurricanes following Jeff Zatkoff's assignment to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Tuesday,Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Thomas Greiss had missed the Pens' previous four games while dealing with the mumps, but is past the contagious period and resumed skating with the rest of the team Tuesday. Despite Marc-Andre Fleury's recent slump, it doesn't appear likely that Greiss will be a serious candidate for Wednesday's start, but it might not be long before he gets his next opportunity.

Pens' Greiss Works Out Sunday

News: Thomas Greiss (illness) rejoined the Penguins on Sunday, taking part in an on-ice session with the team's strength and conditioning coach.
Analysis: The news would suggest Thomas Greiss is past the contagious stage of his bout with the mumps. However, the virus undoubtedly put his body through the wringer, so he'll still need some more practice time before returning to active duty. Jeff Zatkoff will remain on hand as the backup goalie for Monday's game against the Devils while Greiss stays back in Pittsburgh.

Penguins' Greiss Dealing With Mumps

News: Thomas Greiss has been diagnosed with the mumps, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: A mumps test performed on Thomas Greiss last week came back negative, but it turns out he is actually dealing with the same setback that has affected numerous NHL players over the last several weeks. Jeff Zatkoff figures to serve as the backup goaltender behind Marc-Andre Fleury until Greiss is able to resume playing sometime in the next week or two.

No Mumps Update Until Friday For Pens' Greiss

News: The results of Thomas Greiss' tests for the mumps won't be available until Friday.
Analysis: With the NHL observing a three-day break in the schedule for the holidays, the status of Thomas Greiss, Steve Downie, and Brandon Sutter will remain shrouded in mystery until the Pens reconvene for practice. Greiss has already been unavailable for the team's past two games as a precaution.

Penguins' Greiss Undergoes Further Tests For Mumps

News: Thomas Greiss is being tested for the mumps and will not be available for Monday's game against the Panthers, Josh Yohe of The Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Thomas Greiss tested negative for the mumps just a few days ago, but it appears he is not out of the woods just yet. With Greiss unavailable Monday, Jeff Zatkoff is expected to be recalled to fill the backup duties behind Marc-Andre Fleury.

Pens' Greiss Passes Mumps Test

News: Thomas Greiss tested negative for the mumps and has been cleared to rejoin the team.
Analysis: After Thomas Greiss was feeling under the weather Thursday morning, the Penguins wasted no time in isolating him from the rest of the team due to concerns that he might be their third player to have acquired the mumps. Fortunately, it appears his symptoms of illness were unrelated to the virus, and it now looks like he'll resume his usual backup duties behind Marc-Andre Fleury on Saturday against the Panthers. Jeff Zatkoff, who served as the team's No. 2 netminder on Thursday while Greiss was unavailable, was reassigned to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Friday after Greiss' encouraging test results were revealed.

Pens' Greiss Out Thursday

News: Marc-Andre Fleury will start in goal for the Penguins on Thursday while Thomas Greiss (illness) remains unavailable.
Analysis: It seemed as though Thomas Greiss might make for a solid waiver-wire or daily-league pickup when Fleury was battling an illness Wednesday, but the Flower is now healthy. Instead, it looks like it's Greiss who may be suffering from the mumps, though the results of his tests for the virus have yet to be revealed. Jeff Zatkoff will serve as Fleury's backup Thursday.

Penguins' Greiss Being Tested For Mumps

News: Thomas Greiss is being tested for the mumps.
Analysis: Thomas Greiss' short-term status is in question until it is determined what type of ailment he is dealing with. He was in position to see added playing time with fellow goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury potentially dealing with the mumps, but an exam cleared Fleury of any mumps symptoms, and it is now Greiss who could be the one missing time due to the illness making its way around the league. He'll likely be unavailable for at least Thursday's game against the Avalanche, as Jeff Zatkoff was called up from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to serve as Fleury's temporary backup.

Greiss To Start For Pens?

News: Thomas Greiss makes for a short-term speculative pickup, given starter's Marc-Andre Fleury's current sickness.
Analysis: The Penguins play home games Thursday against Colorado and Saturday versus Florida. It's possible that Fleury might miss those games if he indeed has contracted the mumps, putting Thomas Greiss in line for a pair of starts against two middling teams. The Pittsburgh backup sports a 3-2-2 mark with a 2.53 goals-against average and .919 save percentage.
