McGinn Shuffles Off To Buffalo

News: Jamie McGinn (back) was traded to Buffalo on Friday along with Ryan O'Reilly in exchange for Nikita Zadorov, Mikhail Grigorenko, J.T. Compher, and the 31st overall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, TSN's Darren Dreger reports.
Analysis: O'Reilly is definitely the headliner in the deal from Buffalo's point of view, but Jamie McGinn is a solid extra piece. A serious back injury limited him to just 19 games this past season, but McGinn scored 19 goals just two seasons ago and he's a solid depth player. He is expected to be fully healthy for training camp in the fall.

Avs' McGinn Expects To Be Ready For Camp

News: Jamie McGinn (back) is expected to be 100 percent healthy for the start of training camp in the fall, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Jamie McGinn, who underwent season-ending back surgery in December, said he recently endured a setback in his recovery, but it's not something significant enough to challenge his availability for the start of the 2015-16 campaign. The back injury limited McGinn to just 19 games this season, during which he produced four goals, two assists, and a minus-9 rating.

Coach Confirms Avs' McGinn Out For Season

News: Coach Patrick Roy acknowledged Tuesday that Jamie McGinn (back) would be out for the remainder of the season, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: It was fully expected after Jamie McGinn underwent back surgery in December that he would be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign, so Roy's statement merely confirms as much. His season will end after just 19 games, during which he compiled six points and a minus-9 rating.

Avs' McGinn (Back) Likely Done For Season

News: Jamie McGinn (back) underwent surgery Wednesday and isn't expected to play again in 2014-15, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports. "It went really well," coach Patrick Roy said of McGinn's procedure, "But I would not be surprised if he's out for the season."
Analysis: There was some uncertainty whether Jamie McGinn's back procedure would be a short- or long-term repair, but Roy's words would seem to indicate the latter. The first season of the two-year, $5.9 million deal McGinn inked with the Avs in the offseason appears to be a loss, as the depth player was limited to just 19 games, producing six points and a minus-9 rating.

Avs' McGinn To Have Back Surgery

News: Jamie McGinn will undergo surgery on his injured back Wednesday and could miss the rest of the season, reports The Denver Post.
Analysis: This comes as a huge blow to the Avs' forward depth even though Jamie McGinn hadn't put up very good numbers to start the year. We won't know until after his surgery whether McGinn will miss the duration of the season or return after a shorter (but still lengthy) absence, so keep an eye out for further news.

Avs' McGinn May Need Back Surgery

News: Jamie McGinn will be evaluated by doctors Sunday to determine if he will require back surgery.
Analysis: Jamie McGinn's injury first classified him as day-to-day, but it has progressed to the point of possible season-ending surgery. The news should come across the board later Sunday, but it's reportedly more likely than not that he will need the surgery.

Avs Place McGinn (Back) On IR

News: Jamie McGinn (back) was placed on injured reserve Friday.
Analysis: Jamie McGinn was first considered day-to-day, but now his injury appears to be more serious than initially thought. He will be required to sit until Saturday, meaning he could return before the next game, but the team's recall of three forwards likely indicates that is an unrealistic timetable. His next opportunity to return would be Tuesday against the Coyotes.

McGinn (Back) Scratched Thursday

News: Jamie McGinn (back) was a scratch for the Avalanche on Thursday.
Analysis: Jamie McGinn was sidelined from practice the last few days because of the back injury, and now it will cause him to miss Thursday's contest as well. His next opportunity to return will come Saturday against the Hurricanes.

Avalanche's McGinn Dealing With Back Injury

News: Jamie McGinn is questionable for Thursday's game against the Capitals due to a back injury, The Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The nature of Jamie McGinn's injury is uncertain, but it prevented him from taking part in practice the last two days. Expect the Avalanche to provide an update on McGinn's status sometime Thursday.

Avs' McGinn Scores In Loss

News: Jamie McGinn scored the team's lone goal, on the power play, in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Jets on Sunday.
Analysis: Jamie McGinn has been logging time on the team's second power play line, resulting in his second goal in as many games. He recorded career highs in goals and assists last year with 19 of each, and could put up similar numbers this season.

McGinn Scores Avs' First Goal

News: Jamie McGinn scored Colorado's first goal of the season in Monday's win over the Bruins.
Analysis: It was a nice play from the 26-year-old, who took a pass from a pinching Tyson Barrie before firing a shot past Bruins' goaltender Niklas Svedberg. If Jamie McGinn continues to skate on the top line with Jarmoe Iginla and Matt Duchene, there's no reason he can't duplicate the success of the 19-goal season he put up in 2013-14.

Avs' McGinn Ready To Go For Opener

News: Jamie McGinn (back) appears set to play in Thursday's regular-season opener against the Wild, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Jamie McGinn was slow to recover from offseason back surgery in training camp, but has been able to practice fully for about the last week to eliminate most of the concern regarding his health. He'll serve as the Avs' third-line left wing Thursday night, joining Daniel Briere and Max Talbot.

Avs' McGinn Set To Return By Opening Night

News: Jamie McGinn returned to practice on Wednesday and should be ready for Colorado's season opener next week, Adrian Dater of The Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Jamie McGinn established career-highs in goals, assists, and points last season while only missing three games. When he returns to full health, he'll likely slot in on the third line, but coach Patrick Roy could drop him down if he feels the team needs more scoring talent in the bottom six. With Alex Tanguay back from injury this season, along with the Avs adding Jarome Iginla to replace the departed Paul Stastny, McGinn may have difficulty surpassing last season's point production.

Avs' McGinn Skates

News: Jamie McGinn (back) skated at practice Monday, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Jamie McGinn is still recovering from offseason back surgery, but it's a good sign that he's back on the ice. He still has yet to be cleared for contact, but at this point, it looks like McGinn will be available right around the start of the regular season.

Avs' McGinn Still Recovering From Back Surgery

News: Jamie McGinn isn't completely recovered from offseason back surgery and could be limited in training camp, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Jamie McGinn re-upped with the Avs on a two-year deal in June, and it's likely the team knew about the procedure before bringing him back in the fold. The Avs haven't issued a rough timetable for when to expect McGinn back at full strength, but his injury puts the club in somewhat of a rough spot with several of their other forwards banged up in the early going. If McGinn recovers well as camp progresses, he'll likely occupy a spot on the third line entering the 2014-15 campaign.

Avs Bring Back McGinn On Two-Year Deal

News: The Avs re-signed Jamie McGinn to a two-year deal worth $5.9 million Thursday, ESPN reports.
Analysis: The 25-year-old registered 19 goals and 19 assists in 79 games last season and played an important role in the Avs returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2009-10.

Avs' McGinn Comes Up With Two Points In Defeat

News: Jamie McGinn tallied a goal and an assist in Wednesday's Game 7 loss to the Wild.
Analysis: Despite moving down to a bottom-six role following the return of Matt Duchene, Jamie McGinn still managed to make an impact offensively, having a hand in the Avs' first two scores of the night. He finishes with two goals and three assists over the seven-game series.

Avs' McGinn Back In Bottom Six

News: With the return of Matt Duchene, Jamie McGinn has been bumped back down into the bottom six of the Avs' offensive corps. He will skate with recent call-up Joey Hishon and playoff veteran Max Talbot in Wednesday's do-or-die Game 7 at Pepsi Center against the Wild.
Analysis: Outside of Game 1 when he picked up a goal and an assist, the 25-year-old has underwhelmed in Round 1 alongside the offensively gifted Ryan O'Reilly and P.A. Parenteau, as he managed just a single assist in the five games that followed. The return of Duchene -- who should look more like his typical superstar self after shaking the rust off in Game 6 in his return from a knee injury -- allows Jamie McGinn to slide back into a depth role more suited to his skillset and comfort level. It's not uncommon for depth players to step up and shine in crucial playoff moments, so don't be too surprised if someone on McGinn's line emerges a hero in Game 7.

Avs' McGinn Expected To Play Saturday

News: Despite missing Friday's practice with a sore foot, Jamie McGinn is expected to play in Saturday's matinee against the Sharks, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: It sounds like Jamie McGinn just took a maintenance day Friday, so the top-six winger forward looks good to go against San Jose. He's been held pointless in his last three games, though, so those in daily leagues may want to bench the former Shark if other options are available.

Avs` McGinn Tallies Goal and Assist In Loss

News: Jamie McGinn improved upon his career-high goal total Tuesday, firing his 18th past Carey Price. He also added an assist in the Avs` 6-3 loss to the Canadiens.
Analysis: Voila. Just like magic, Jamie McGinn has snatched up points in each of the four games since having his linemates upgraded to Ryan O`Reilly and Matt Duchene, Colorado`s respective goal and point leaders. Most importantly, it was John Mitchell -- not McGinn -- who was bumped out of the Avs top six with the return of Paul Stastny from injury Tuesday. So, if McGinn can continue to be a complementary wingman to the two-headed monster in O`Reilly and Duchene, the stream of points should continue to flow.

Avs' McGinn Buries A Pair In Friday's Loss

News: Jamie McGinn popped in two goals - both on the power play - for his 16th and 17th of the season in Friday's 6-4 loss to the Ducks.
Analysis: His impressive showing is overshadowed by the fact that the Avs gave up an absurd six goals in the second period, contributing to his subpar minus-3 rating. Nonetheless, Jamie McGinn already has three points in two games since moving up to the big line with Matt Duchene and Ryan O'Reilly. Coach Patrick Roy also has the trio together on the top power-play unit and they seem to be developing chemistry, with O'Reilly assisting on both of McGinn's second period tallies. McGinn needs just three more goals to become the sixth (!) Avs player to reach at least 20 this year, after Swedish captain Gabe Landeskog became the fifth with a goal of his own Friday. With no return in sight for Paul Stastny and P.A. Parenteau done for the regular season, the upward-trending McGinn looks ripe for the picking - check your wire.

Avs' McGinn Shuffled Again

News: Jamie McGinn joined Ryan O'Reilly and Matt Duchene on a line during Wednesday's morning skate, according to the Denver Post.
Analysis: The move was necessary after the Avalanche suffered a second key injury in as many games Monday, this time to P.A. Parenteau who will miss the rest of the regular season with an MCL issue. Jamie McGinn spent just one game with Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog while filling in for the also-injured Paul Stastny, as coach Patrick Roy has elected to try John Mitchell on the top line after he posted a multi-point effort last game. The good news for McGinn is that both configurations position him for success. As long as he's hanging with the Avs potent top six, he's a prime candidate to grab some coveted "third wheel" points from Colorado's best scorers.

Avs` McGinn Gets Shot On Top Line

News: Jamie McGinn will be moved up to play right wing on the Avs' top line Monday against the Jets, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Jamie McGinn will fill the No. 1 right wing vacancy left by red-hot rookie Nathan MacKinnon, who has been shifted to center to replace the injured Paul Stastny. McGinn has been on the quiet side lately, failing to record a single point on any of Colorado's 18 goals over the last five games. He`ll also skate alongside captain Gabriel Landeskog and get a boost in power-play time, so an uptick in production is likely on the horizon. McGinn's 26 points tie him for eighth on the Avs with rookie defenseman Tyson Barrie.

Two Points For Avs' McGinn

News: Jamie McGinn had a goal and assist in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Kings.
Analysis: Both of Jamie McGinn's points came on the power-play, where he logged 4:54 of his 16:23 of ice time on the night. McGinn's value is typically capped at even-strength since he skates on the third line with Maxime Talbot and John Mitchell, but his continued presence on the top power-play unit with the likes of Matt Duchene and Ryan O'Reilly allows him to maintain relevance in deep or mid-sized leagues.

Avs' McGinn Goes Minus-5 In Loss

News: Jamie McGinn -- along with linemates Matt Duchene and Ryan O'Reilly -- went minus-5 in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Rangers. He also took two shots on goal and laid two hits.
Analysis: The Avs really laid an egg in this one, but the Jamie McGinn-Duchene-O'Reilly line was the real goat -- they were on the ice for all five goals against and rode the pine for the only Colorado tally. With a meager 23 points in 52 games despite seeing solid ice time all year long, McGinn has looked a lot more like a jumped-up checking-liner than a true top-six forward.
