Sabres' Neuvirth Saves 39 In Loss

News: Michal Neuvirth, making his first start of the season, stopped 39 of 44 shots in a 5-1 loss to Anaheim on Monday.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth struggled in the preseason, but played much better in his first start despite being bombarded. No Sabres goalie is going to do well if the guys in front of him keep allowing 40-plus shots per game. The team was supposed to be much improved this year on defense, but that has yet to take shape. The Sabres' offense generated just 12 shots against Frederik Andersen, so Neuvirth didn't have much of a chance to get the win anyway. Jhonas Enroth remains the team's No. 1 goalie, but Nolan will likely stick with the hot hand wherever he can find it.

Sabres Going With Neuvirth Monday

News: Michal Neuvirth will start Monday against the Ducks, Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth will make his season debut in place of starter Jhonas Enroth, and will need to be excellent behind a shaky Sabres defensive unit if he wants to escape with a win.

Neuvirth Allows Six In Sabres Loss

News: Michal Neuvirth stopped just 16 shots in Friday's 6-4 loss to Toronto.
Analysis: How do you say "laid an egg" in Czech? Michal Neuvirth is fighting for the No. 1 job in Buffalo but allowed six goals on just 22 shots in the loss. This, compared to the competition, Jhonas Enroth, who posted a 2-0 shutout in his preseason start. The Sabres defense wasn't flawless but Neuvirth wasn't sharp either, allowing several soft goals during the game. He also didn't look particularly quick or fast, compared to his normal level of play, and you have to wonder if the hip injury suffered in March is still bugging him. Enroth is clearly ahead for the starting job right now.

Sabres' Neuvirth To Start Friday

News: Michal Neuvirth will be the Sabres' starter Friday against Toronto, reports John Vogl of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth will have his work cut out for him with Jhonas Enroth posting a shutout in his preseason start. The two are in a battle for the starting job and the Sabres are dressing a veteran-heavy lineup against Toronto, so there will be no excuses for a poor showing. Neuvirth was very good for the Sabres before suffering a hip injury and is looking to continue where he left off. The Sabres are unlikely to name a starter until a few days before their season opener. As of right now, Enroth has the inside track, but a strong performance from Neuvirth at camp can certainly change that.

Sabres' Neuvirth To Battle For No. 1 Goalie Duties

News: Michal Neuvirth is set to battle Jhonas Enroth in training camp for top goaltending duties for the Sabres, John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth, who was acquired by the Capitals at the trade deadline last season, only appeared in two games with his new squad before a hip injury ended his season. He's now fully recovered from the issue, and should see a roughly even workload in training camp while the coaching staff looks to proclaim a victor. Both goalies have similar career numbers which confer neither an advantage, but Neuvirth's familiarity with new goalie coach Arturs Irbe could work in his favor. Under Irbe's watch in Washington in 2010-11, Neuvirth enjoyed the best season of his career, going 27-12-4 with a 2.45 GAA and .914 save percentage. Don't expect the Sabres to announce their No. 1 netminder until late in training camp, with the team possibly waiting up until the morning skate of their Oct. 9 regular season opener against Columbus.

Sabres' Neuvirth: Hip Injury Revealed

News: The injury that sidelined Michal Neuvirth since mid-March is a nagging hip problem and he's been seeing a specialist, according to The Buffalo News.
Analysis: No word yet whether the issue can be dealt with through therapy or if Michal Neuvirth will need offseason surgery. Assuming he's good either way for the start of 2014-15, Neuvirth is expected to compete with Jhonas Enroth for the starting goaltender duties.

Sabres' Neuvirth Likely Done For Season

News: Michal Neuvirth (lower body) is not expected to return this season.
Analysis: With Michal Neuvirth making limited progress in his recovery from his lower-body injury, it makes sense for the Sabres to just have him pack it for the season with only a week of action remaining. Matt Hackett and Nathan Lieuwen are expected to handle the goaltending duties for Buffalo the rest of the way.

Sabres' Neuvirth Not Close

News: Sabres coach Ted Nolan said Michal Neuvirth, out since March 13 with a lower-body injury, is still a ways from returning, according to John Vogl of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Nathan Lieuwen will get the start against the Devils on Tuesday; the dreadful Sabres will continue to roll with Lieuwen and Matt Hackett while Michal Neuvirth and Jhonas Enroth remain sidelined.

Sabres' Neuvirth To Receive Further Evaluation

News: Michal Neuvirth (lower body) left the team Wednesday and returned to Buffalo for further evaluation.
Analysis: As coach Ted Nolan suggested a day earlier, Michal Neuvirth will be examined over the next few days, as the Sabres look to determine why he isn't making much progress in his recovery. The move to Buffalo over the trade deadline was expected to provide Neuvirth will the opportunity to prove himself worthy of the No. 1 job heading into next season, but it looks like the lower-body injury could sabotage those hopes.

Sabres' Not Optimistic About Neuvirth's Recovery

News: Though Michal Neuvirth (lower body) continues to travel with the Sabres, coach Ted Nolan isn't optimistic that the goalie will be back in the lineup in the near future. "[Neuvirth is] not too good. I think we may even send him back to Buffalo to get re-evaluated," Nolan said. "He's not progressing as well as we thought."
Analysis: With neither Michal Neuvirth or Jhonas Enroth (lower body) seemingly close to returning from their respective injuries, it looks like the Sabres will have to get by with the tandem of Matt Hackett and Nathan Lieuwen until further notice. It's certainly possible that Neuvirth won't play again this season with only a few weeks remaining on the season, though that will depend on what doctors have to say once the goalie is re-evaluated.

Sabres' Neuvirth To Miss Two More

News: Michal Neuvirth (lower body) will miss both of the Sabres' next two games.
Analysis: Coach Ted Nolan said Michal Neuvirth continues to operate at below 100 percent health and hasn't been improving as quickly as expected. The Sabres will go with Nathan Lieuwen Sunday vs. the Canucks, while Matt Hackett gets in the call Tuesday in Montreal.

Sabres' Neuvirth Still Not Ready To Play

News: Michal Neuvirth (lower body) will not be available Thursday against the Oilers.
Analysis: While Michal Neuvirth is traveling with his teammates, it seems the club is not yet comfortable returning him to game action. Matt Hackett will make his first regular season start in a Buffalo uniform on Thursday, but Neuvirth is expected back at some point on the road trip. Both the goalie and coach Ted Nolan appear to be targeting Saturday vs. Vancouver as a realistic return date, according to Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News reports.

Sabres' Neuvirth To Sit Out Tuesday

News: Michal Neuvirth (lower body) will not play Tuesday vs. the Flames, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth is traveling with the Sabres on their five-game road trip and is expected to be available at some point during that time, but it won't be Tuesday. With No. 1 goalie Jhonas Enroth (leg) remaining in Buffalo and therefore unavailable as well Tuesday, coach Ted Nolan will tab Nathan Lieuwen for his first career start, while fellow AHL call-up Matt Hackett serves as his backup.

Neuvirth Joining Sabres On Road Trip

News: Michal Neuvirth (lower body) will travel with the Sabres on their five-game road trip beginning Tuesday in Calgary.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Canadiens with a lower-body injury, but it appears his injury was minor compared to fellow goalie Jhonas Enroth's leg ailment. With Enroth remaining in Buffalo during the trip, Neuvirth could get his first extended run as the team's netminder, assuming his own injury isn't too limiting heading into Tuesday. If Neuvirth is not quite ready to start against the Flames, look for emergency recall Nathan Lieuwen to make his first career NHL start.

Sabres' Neuvirth Out With Lower Body Injury

News: Michal Neuvirth is out with a lower-body and Nathan Lieuwen has been called up, reports John Vogl of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Jhonas Enroth played Saturday night, which means Michal Neuvirth will miss his slated start on Sunday. Lieuwen was called up on an emergency basis, and may get the start instead. Neuvirth was acquired from Washington at the trade deadline and has started two games for the Sabres, both of them losses, though he has done a fantastic job of stopping the puck with a .949 save percentage, facing 97 shots over those two games.. No word on how Neuvirth got injured, but he'll be considered day-to-day. Adjust your rosters accordingly.

Neuvirth, Sabres Under Siege In Loss

News: Michal Neuvirth allowed three goals on 54 shots in Thursday's 4-2 loss to Carolina in his second start since being acquired from Washington on trade deadline day.
Analysis: Carolina added an empty-netter late. Michal Neuvirth has faced 98 shots in his first two games for the Sabres, almost 50 per start. While the Caps typically allowed more than their share of shots against, it won't be as many as he sees in Buffalo. Given that Buffalo is a team in flux, Neuvirth is not the safest of options, especially considering the Sabres have given Jhonas Enroth the nods of late.

Sabres Turn To Neuvirth On Thursday

News: Michal Neuvirth will get the start in goal Thursday vs. the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth will be making his second start for the Sabres after shining in defeat in last Friday's debut, as he stopped 42 of 44 shots. While it seems coach Ted Nolan remains more comfortable with Jhonas Enroth as his primary starter at the moment, another strong showing by Neuvirth could convince him to lean in a different direction.

Sabres' Neuvirth Makes 42 Saves In Loss Friday

News: Michal Neuvirth stopped 42 of 44 shots but took the loss in his Sabres debut Friday.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth came over from the Capitals at the trade deadline and got the start but is still considered the backup to Jhonas Enroth, though it sounds like the rest of the season could be used to raise some competition for 2014-15. Neuvirth played a solid game as the Panthers peppered him with shots all night, but with little offensive support, he did the best he could. He is now 4-7-2 with a 2.76 GAA and .918 save percentage.

Neuvirth Likely To Debut Friday For Sabres

News: Michal Neuvirth is expected to make his Sabres debut Friday against the Panthers.
Analysis: With the Sabres beginning a back-to-back, it looks like they'll go with Jhonas Enroth on Thursday and Michal Neuvirth on Friday as they look to settle on a full-time goalie the rest of the way. Given the team's greater familiarity with Enroth, it seems like he's a safer bet to see the bulk of the starts the rest of the way, but a strong showing early on from Neuvirth could allow him to finish the season as the team's No. 1.

Sabres Swap Halak For Caps' Neuvirth

News: Michal Neuvirth is headed from Washington to Buffalo, along with Rostislav Klesla, for Jaroslav Halak and a third-round draft pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, the Capitals' official site reports.
Analysis: Halak was never going to stay in Buffalo for long. In Michal Neuvirth, the Sabres get a younger goalie who comes cheaper and has one more year left on his deal. Whether Neuvirth or incumbent starter Jhonas Enroth will get the majority of the starts remains to be seen, but head coach Ted Nolan will most certainly be holding open auditions for next year. The Sabres also dealt Matt Moulson and Cody McCormick in a separate trade, which means Neuvirth/Enroth won't have much help in front of them. The values of both goalies take a bit of a hit, but more so for Neuvirth, who goes from the Caps to the Sabres.

Caps' Neuvirth Not Starting Thursday

News: Michal Neuvirth will not take the start in Thursday's game against the Jets, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth was scheduled to start, but Braden Holtby led the team out for warm-ups instead to take the start in goal. He was reportedly seeming under the weather in the morning, so consider him day-to-day with a possible illness.

Caps Roll With Neuvirth Thursday

News: Michal Neuvirth is slated to start Thursday's game against the Jets.

Caps' Neuvirth Strong In Losing Effort

News: Michal Neuvirth allowed just a single goal on 28 shots, but the Caps couldn't score at all for him in Tuesday's 1-0 loss to the Islanders.
Analysis: Despite being charged with the loss, this was a fine bounce-back outing for Michal Neuvirth after he was tagged for five goals in his last start. Of course, because the hockey gods have a sense of humor, he won that game and lost this one.

Caps Turn To Neuvirth Tuesday

News: Michal Neuvirth will get the start Tuesday against the Islanders, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth, who will be making his third straight start for the Caps, is coming off a 6-5 overtime win over Detroit on Sunday in which he stopped 25 of 30 shots, lifting his record to 4-5-2 in the process.

Capitals' Neuvirth Lets In Five But Wins

News: Michal Neuvirth made 25 saves on 30 shots in an overtime win against the Red Wings on Sunday.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth isn't having a good year, as he has a .910 save percentage and 2.97 GAA, but nobody in Washington has been terribly strong in net, so he may keep getting starts.
