Sabres' Neuvirth Better Than Expected

News: Coach Ted Nolan indicated that the Sabres expected Michal Neuvirth to miss days rather than weeks due to the lower-body injury he suffered Tuesday night against the Sharks.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth has been ruled out for both of the Sabres' games over the weekend, but it's possible Friday's home contest will be postponed in any case due to the ongoing snow emergency in the Buffalo area. At any rate, having Neuvirth miss only a few contests would amount to great news for the Sabres, as it was feared the goalie may have sustained a long-term injury when he suffered an apparent groin tweak in Tuesday's win. Jhonas Enroth will serve as the top netminder for the Sabres in the interim, but unless he plays exceedingly well, Neuvirth figures to remain option 1A for the team once he returns to full health.

Sabres, Neuvirth To Play During Snowstorm

News: Tuesday's game, in which Michal Neuvirth is scheduled to start against San Jose's Troy Grosenick, will be played as planned even though Buffalo is in the middle of a nasty snowstorm, The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: The crowd might be down a bit given the weather, but based on the way the Sabres have been playing this season maybe that will give the good people of Buffalo a little less stress than they're already having this week. We will note the Sharks are one of the few teams Buffalo has had success against lately, beating them the last seven times. That said, San Jose is a heavy favorite against Buffalo, as is pretty much any other team as the Sabres work through a major rebuild. As for Tuesday's game, the two teams are pushing to get this game in, as the remaining schedules of the two franchises on opposite coasts aren't conducive for a makeup contest.

Sabres' Neuvirth Exits With Lower-Body Injury

News: Michal Neuvirth exited Tuesday's game against the Sharks following the first period with a lower-body injury, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth was hurt after Tyler Ennis crashed into his own goalie while trying to stop a 2-on-1 rush by the Sharks. The goal was disallowed, but the Sabres lost their starting goalie to the injury, which at first glance, looks like it could be a groin issue. It's also worth nothing that Neuvirth is coming off a hip injury that cost him significant action the previous season. Jhonas Enroth played the rest of the game and came away with the win. The Sabres figure to determine a timetable for Neuvirth in the coming days, but so long as he remains out, Enroth will take over starting duties, with either Nathan Lieuwen or Andrey Makarov acting as his backup.

Sabres' Neuvirth Starting Tuesday

News: Michal Neuvirth will start in net Tuesday against the Sharks.
Analysis: The netminder was excellent last time out, stopping 32 of the 34 shots he faced in Saturday's win over the Maple Leafs. With Tuesday's start, Michal Neuvirth and Enroth will both have 10 appearances on the season as they continue to battle for the starting gig. The Sabres have defeated the Sharks in seven consecutive showdowns and another strong performance will certainly give Neuvirth the edge. The hard part is staying at the top, however, as Enroth will undoubtedly make a push throughout the season.

Sabres' Neuvirth: 32 Saves In Rare Win

News: Michal Neuvirth made 32 saves in a 6-2 win over the Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
Analysis: He continues to see a lot of pucks, so his save percentage is actually solid this season. But he has just three wins and a bloated GAA. Surely you have better options.

Sabres' Neuvirth To Start Saturday

News: Michal Neuvirth will be in the crease for Saturday's game against the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth will look to get back on track after being lit up for six goals on 29 shots his last time out, but that will not be easy against a Toronto squad that sits third in the NHL with 3.31 goals per game.

Sabres' Neuvirth Gives Up Six In Loss

News: Michal Neuvirth was tagged for six goals on 29 shots in Tuesday's blowout loss to St. Louis.
Analysis: And that's how your strong start to the season gets erased in one night. All of a sudden, Michal Neuvirth finds himself sitting on an ugly 3.07 GAA and has won just twice -- his respectable .915 save mark isn't enough to make up for that. It wasn't all on Neuvirth, though, as a match penalty from Nicolas Deslauriers put the Sabres in a tough spot where the Blues capitalized with three power play goals. The Sabres will continue their rotation and it can be expected Jhonas Enroth will be given the next start.

Sabres' Neuvirth Starting Tuesday

News: Michal Neuvirth will start between the pipes Tuesday against the Blues, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth has played well so far this season, and appears to have taken over the starting position from Jhonas Enroth. He won't win a ton of games playing for the Sabres, but Neuvirth's .929 save percentage is good for 10th in the league.

Neuvirth's 49 Saves Not Enough, Oilers Down Sabres

News: Michal Neuvirth allowed three goals on 52 shots as the Sabres' woes continued in a 3-2 loss to Edmonton on Friday.
Analysis: Let's be clear - there was nothing more Michal Neuvirth could've done to help the Sabres win the game. He stopped 49 of 52 shots for a .942 save percentage in an embarrassing defensive effort against one of the worst teams in the league. Boyd Gordon's late-game winner came off a turnover by Andrej Meszaros and a lackluster back check by the entire team, as the former Capital was hung out to dry. Although Neuvirth is now 1-1-1 in his last three games, the 26-year-old has stopped an impressive 116 of 122 shots in that span. With a save percentage (.929) that ranks 15th best in the NHL, Neuvirth is starting to emerge over Jhonas Enroth as Buffalo's number one goalie.

Sabres Going With Neuvirth On Friday

News: Michal Neuvirth will be in the crease Friday against the Oilers.
Analysis: After suggesting a day earlier that Jhonas Enroth would get the start against the Oilers, coach Ted Nolan reversed course at Friday's morning skate, instead granting Michal Neuvirth his third straight start. With the Sabres playing a back-to-back over the weekend, both Neuvirth and Enroth were likely to get one nod apiece anyway, but Neuvirth will benefit from getting the more favorable draw of the two. The Oilers have dropped four in a row and will be playing the second game of their own back-to-back set, providing Neuvirth will a good shot at evening his record at 3-3-1.

Neuvirth Allows One Goal In Sabres Loss

News: Michal Neuvirth surrendered only one goal in regulation as the Sabres fell to the Habs 2-1 in a shootout Wednesday.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth got the nod again after defeating the Red Wings on Sunday after stopping 36 or 38 shots, but could not win his second straight game. In his past two starts, Neuvirth has allowed just three goals in regulation on 70 shots, good enough for a .957 save percentage. Goal support has been virtually non-existent for the Sabres this year, but Neuvirth is doing his best to keep his team in games. Despite Jhonas Enroth winning the starting job after training camp, Neuvirth has appeared to be the stronger goalie thus far this season. Head coach Ted Nolan will continue to split the starts until a clear No. 1 emerges.

Sabres' Neuvirth To Start Again Wednesday

News: Michal Neuvirth will start Wednesday's game against the Canadiens, Bill Hoppe of the Times Herald reports.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth will start for the second straight game in place of Jhonas Enroth, who has won just once all season. This isn't an official changing of the guard in Buffalo, but it's possible Neuvirth could be getting a chance to replace Enroth as the Sabres' primary goaltender.

Sabres' Neuvirth Starting Sunday

News: Michal Neuvirth will start in goal against the Red Wings on Sunday, Bill Hoppe of the Times Herald reports.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth gets the start on the back end of back-to-back games Saturday and Sunday. He allowed four goals on 37 shots in his last start Tuesday, and will look for a better outing and some more offensive support Sunday against the Red Wings.

Sabres' Neuvirth Strong In Win

News: Michal Neuvirth stopped 36 shots in Sunday's shootout win over the Red Wings.
Analysis: Getting the start on the second game of a back-to-back, Michal Neuvirth was strong in net despite facing 21 shots in the third and overtime periods. He's still the backup, but he's been in net in two of the team's three wins and has played well in limited action.

Neuvirth, Sabres Fall To Leafs

News: Michal Neuvirth allowed four goals on 37 shots in Tuesday's shutout loss at the hands of the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Considering that Buffalo was outshot by the ridiculous tally of 37-10, this is really a very decent effort from Michal Neuvirth, who can only do so much with such an awful team in front of him. Even if he plays well, he's going to have an awfully hard time putting up fantasy-relevant stats with this kind of supporting cast -- not to mention the smaller end of a split with Jhonas Enroth.

Sabres Going With Neuvirth Tuesday

News: Michal Neuvirth will start Tuesday's game against the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth was stellar in Saturday's 29 save, 2-1 win over the Sharks, so he'll get a chance to start consecutive games. Neuvirth has recovered nicely after a disappointing showing during the preseason and it's clear head coach Ted Nolan is going with the hot hand. Neuvirth is still behind Jhonas Enroth on the depth chart, but if Neuvirth continues his strong play he may start stealing more starts from Enroth. Neuvirth is 5-3-1 with a 2.96 goals-against average and .893 save percentage in 11 career appearances against the Leafs. The Leafs are coming off a 4-1 loss to Boston, but start Neuvirth at your own risk.

Sabres' Neuvirth Stops 29 In Win

News: Michal Neuvirth stopped 29 shots as the Sabres escaped with a 2-1 win over San Jose on Saturday.
Analysis: It was Michal Neuvirth's first win of the season as the Sabres survived their California road trip with a 1-2-0 record. After being shut out by the Kings on Thursday, Buffalo pumped two goals past Alex Stalock, who faced only 15 shots. The Sabres were lucky they got so many goals past Stalock despite firing so few shots. Buffalo will cap off its four-game road trip against Toronto. No word on who will start that game, though with the win, head coach Ted Nolan may go with Neuvirth again.

Sabres' Neuvirth To Start Saturday

News: Michal Neuvirth will start Saturday against the Sharks, Paul Hamilton from WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth will made his third start of the season as the Sabres hope to avoid a sweep by all three California teams. Neuvirth is 0-2 this season with a 4.00 goals-against average and .896 save percentage. The Sharks are coming off three straight losses and are 1-1-0 at home.

Sabres' Neuvirth Expected To Start On Wednesday

News: Michal Neuvirth is expected to get the start on Wednesday against the Ducks, Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register reports.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth has appeared in one game this season, incidentally enough, against the Ducks. He didn't fare especially well, giving up five goals on 44 shots in a 5-1 loss Oct. 13. Buffalo has been struggling in all facets of the game this season, but Jhonas Enroth still seems to have a steady hand on the No. 1 gig, even after giving up four goals in his last turn over the weekend. It appears coach Ted Nolan is just looking to rest Enroth for the first game of a back-to-back set.

Sabres' Neuvirth Stops 30 In Loss To Anaheim

News: Michal Neuvirth stopped 30 shots as the Sabres lost to the Ducks 4-1 on Wednesday.
Analysis: It was a much better effort for the Sabres in their second meeting with the Ducks after getting outshot 44-12 and losing 5-1 in their first meeting. Michal Neuvirth held the fort until the third period when Corey Perry scored two goals within 1:18 to complete his hat trick. The Sabres could've given Neuvirth a little more goal support, but Frederik Andersen remained on fire. Head coach Ted Nolan said he would split goaltending duties, which means Jhonas Enroth will draw the Kings on Thursday night. The Sabres are 0-1 in their current four-game road trip. It'll be a tough go for Sabres goalies this year with the team expected to finish in lottery position.

Sabres' Neuvirth Saves 39 In Loss

News: Michal Neuvirth, making his first start of the season, stopped 39 of 44 shots in a 5-1 loss to Anaheim on Monday.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth struggled in the preseason, but played much better in his first start despite being bombarded. No Sabres goalie is going to do well if the guys in front of him keep allowing 40-plus shots per game. The team was supposed to be much improved this year on defense, but that has yet to take shape. The Sabres' offense generated just 12 shots against Frederik Andersen, so Neuvirth didn't have much of a chance to get the win anyway. Jhonas Enroth remains the team's No. 1 goalie, but Nolan will likely stick with the hot hand wherever he can find it.

Sabres Going With Neuvirth Monday

News: Michal Neuvirth will start Monday against the Ducks, Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth will make his season debut in place of starter Jhonas Enroth, and will need to be excellent behind a shaky Sabres defensive unit if he wants to escape with a win.

Neuvirth Allows Six In Sabres Loss

News: Michal Neuvirth stopped just 16 shots in Friday's 6-4 loss to Toronto.
Analysis: How do you say "laid an egg" in Czech? Michal Neuvirth is fighting for the No. 1 job in Buffalo but allowed six goals on just 22 shots in the loss. This, compared to the competition, Jhonas Enroth, who posted a 2-0 shutout in his preseason start. The Sabres defense wasn't flawless but Neuvirth wasn't sharp either, allowing several soft goals during the game. He also didn't look particularly quick or fast, compared to his normal level of play, and you have to wonder if the hip injury suffered in March is still bugging him. Enroth is clearly ahead for the starting job right now.

Sabres' Neuvirth To Start Friday

News: Michal Neuvirth will be the Sabres' starter Friday against Toronto, reports John Vogl of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth will have his work cut out for him with Jhonas Enroth posting a shutout in his preseason start. The two are in a battle for the starting job and the Sabres are dressing a veteran-heavy lineup against Toronto, so there will be no excuses for a poor showing. Neuvirth was very good for the Sabres before suffering a hip injury and is looking to continue where he left off. The Sabres are unlikely to name a starter until a few days before their season opener. As of right now, Enroth has the inside track, but a strong performance from Neuvirth at camp can certainly change that.

Sabres' Neuvirth To Battle For No. 1 Goalie Duties

News: Michal Neuvirth is set to battle Jhonas Enroth in training camp for top goaltending duties for the Sabres, John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Michal Neuvirth, who was acquired by the Capitals at the trade deadline last season, only appeared in two games with his new squad before a hip injury ended his season. He's now fully recovered from the issue, and should see a roughly even workload in training camp while the coaching staff looks to proclaim a victor. Both goalies have similar career numbers which confer neither an advantage, but Neuvirth's familiarity with new goalie coach Arturs Irbe could work in his favor. Under Irbe's watch in Washington in 2010-11, Neuvirth enjoyed the best season of his career, going 27-12-4 with a 2.45 GAA and .914 save percentage. Don't expect the Sabres to announce their No. 1 netminder until late in training camp, with the team possibly waiting up until the morning skate of their Oct. 9 regular season opener against Columbus.
