Analysis: Matt Smaby last played in the NHL with Tampa Bay during the 2010-11 season, registering no points in 32 games. He played 30 games for the Ducks' AHL affiliate in Syracuse, grabbing nine points.

Anaheim Sends Smaby To AHL

News: Matt Smaby was assigned to the AHL on Friday, AnaheimDucks.com reports.
Analysis: Matt Smaby hasn't made an NHL appearance yet this year, and that's not guaranteed to change given that he had no points in 32 games last season.

Ducks' Smaby to Miss 2-3 Months With Thumb Injury

News: Matt Smaby will miss the next 2-to-3 months with a torn ligament in his right thumb, the Post-Standard reports.
Analysis: Matt Smaby will undergo surgery on his thumb soon to repair the torn ligament. He's on the Ducks to provide defensive depth, but with just six career points in 122 NHL games, his fantasy utility is limited to PIMs, of which he has recorded 106 in that span.

Smaby Signs With Ducks

News: The Ducks have signed Smaby to a one-year contract, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: The 6-5, 222-pound Smaby adds some size and depth to the Anaheim blue line, but with just six career points in 122 NHL games, his fantasy utility is limited to PIMs, of which he has recorded 106 in that span.

Tampa's Smaby Hurting

News: Smaby (leg) did not skate Wednesday, the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis: It's not clear whether that's what kept Smaby out of Wednesday's Game 1 loss against Pittsburgh. He's not likely to be much of a factor, either way.

Bolts' Smaby Returns To Action

News: Smaby (illness) played six minutes in Friday's win over New Jersey.
Analysis: Smaby had been battling an illness and hadn't played since Feb. 12. He's better now, but he's still just a depth defenseman for the Lightning with no points this season.

Bolts' Smaby Out Sick

News: Smaby has an illness and won't play Tuesday against the Flyers, according to the Lightning's Official Twitter Feed.
Analysis: This normally wouldn't be a huge deal with a depth defenseman out, but the Bolts are getting a little thinner on the blue line with Smaby sick and Mike Lundin on IR with an abdominal injury. Playing against the high-powered Flyers, they may feel it a bit on the blue line in this one.

Bolts' Smaby Ready For Saturday

News: Smaby said he will be ready to play Saturday after leaving Tuesday's game during his second shift following a hit on Buffalo's Tyler Ennis, The Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis: Fellow defenseman Mike Lundin isn't so lucky on the injury front so Smaby will be getting some playing time in the near future. He's got just six points in 115 NHL games so offense is certainly not going to be found with Smaby, but he's a decent source of penalty minutes and hits.

Bolts Lose Smaby to Injury

News: Smaby left Tuesday's game with a mid-body injury, reports the Associated Press.
Analysis: He played a whopping 57 seconds before going down. He remains without a point this season (25 games) and he's not racking up PIMs, either. We find it hard to believe he might have any fantasy value at all.

Lightning Activate Smaby

News: Smaby (ankle) will be activated off the IR and play Thursday against Boston, according to Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune.

Bolts Place Smaby on IR

News: The Lightning placed Smaby on injured reserve Saturday because of an ankle injury, the Tampa Tribune's Erik Erlendsson reports.
Analysis: It shouldn't be too difficult for the Lightning to replace Smaby, as he's basically an interchangeable part as a reserve defenseman.

Smaby Back in Action For Lightning

News: Smaby (ankle) returned to action Tuesday and played eight minutes in the Lightning's victory over the Maple Leafs.

Smaby Misses Bolts' Game Saturday

News: Smaby missed Saturday's game after rolling his ankle playing soccer in the morning, the St. Petersburg Times reports.
Analysis: He wasn't moonlighting in the MLS, but instead getting a pregame workout in when he rolled over the ball and tweaked the ankle. For now, he's considered day-to-day.

Bolts' Smaby Returns Thursday

News: Smaby (upper body), who missed the first two games of the season, returned to the Lightning on Thursday.
Analysis: Smaby only logged four minutes of ice time and has little fantasy value, even on an improving Tampa Bay squad that should be able to light the lamp often this season.

Smaby Expected to Play for Lightning Thursday

News: Smaby (upper body) will likely play Thursday against Philadelphia, the Lightning's official site reports.
Analysis: Smaby is a big grinder with little fantasy value regardless of format, so this news won't affect many owners.

Bolts' Smaby Hurt After Fight

News: Smaby suffered an upper body injury Tuesday night after being involved in a fight with Brian Sutherby, the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis: Smaby played just 1:52 of the first period, and when he returned to the ice after the fight he seemed unsteady on his skates. Consider him day-to-day.

Smaby dealing with back spasms

News: The Tampa Tribune reports that Lightning D Matt Smaby is currently out of the lineup with back spasms.
Analysis: Smaby is mostly a rotational blue-liner when healthy and has minimal Fantasy appeal.

Smaby out with concussion

News: Lightning D Matt Smaby was unable to play on Tuesday against the Blue Jackets because of a concussion. He is day to day.
Analysis: Smaby might be day to day, but the NHL takes concussions seriously, so we wouldn't be surprised if Smaby is out at least a week. It's not like he will be missed much in Fantasy since Smaby is mostly a rotational blueliner when healthy. He has minimal Fantasy appeal.

Smaby nets first point in return

News: Lightning D Matt Smaby returned to the lineup on Monday against the Hurricanes after missing three games with a concussion. He tallied an assist and finished at even in 16:32 of ice time.
Analysis: Smaby felt he wasn't going to miss much time with the concussion and he ended up being right. Smaby finally got his first point in 14 games on Monday. He is pretty much a rotational blueliner for Tampa Bay and has little to no Fantasy appeal when healthy.

Smaby dealing with concussion

News: The Tampa Tribune reports the Lightning announced on Thursday that defenseman Matt Smaby suffered a concussion on Saturday against the Flyers. However, he doesn't expect to miss much time. "I had my psyche test and passed that, my symptoms are gone and it's just a matter of getting my body back into shape," Smaby said. "I worked out a little bit (Wednesday), nothing hard, and (Thursday) will be my first real time I'll push my body hard."
Analysis: Smaby suffered a mild concussion earlier this season on a conditioning stint in the minors, so Tampa Bay might be cautious, so this doesn't turn into a perpetual problem. Smaby doesn't have a point in the 13 games he has dressed for this season. He is pretty much a rotational blueliner for Tampa Bay and has little to no Fantasy appeal when healthy.

Smaby still out for Lightning

News: Tampa Bay D Matt Smaby (upper body) was scratched on Tuesday against the Capitals. He is day to day and will hope to return against Florida on Thursday.
Analysis: Smaby doesn't have a point in the 13 games he has dressed for this season. He is pretty much a rotational blueliner for Tampa Bay and has little to no Fantasy appeal when healthy.

Smaby dealing with upper-body injury

News: Lightning D Matt Smaby was not available for Sunday's completion of a previously suspended game against the Devils because of an upper-body injury sustained Saturday against the Flyers. Smaby did start the game against New Jersey on Friday, so he technically failed to record a point in 9:31 of ice time.
Analysis: Smaby doesn't have a point in the 13 games he has dressed for this season. He is pretty much a rotational blueliner for Tampa Bay and has little to no Fantasy appeal when healthy.
