Downie Back In Sunday For Pens

News: Steve Downie is back in the lineup Sunday after serving as a healthy scratch Saturday in St. Louis.
Analysis: Look for Steve Downie to see the bulk of his playing minutes in the first two periods -- if the game is close -- as the team frankly doesn't want to risk its fortunes on a late-game Downie penalty.

Pens' Downie Out Saturday

News: Steve Downie will serve as a healthy scratch Saturday against St. Louis.
Analysis: The Penguins are looking to make changes and haven't been happy with Steve Downie. Fantasy owners will need to look elsewhere for penalty minutes Saturday night.

Downie Scores Pens' Lone Goal Tuesday

News: Steve Downie scored his 10th goal of the season Tuesday while adding 14 penalty minutes to his league-leading total (187 PIM).
Analysis: He appeared to injure a hand during a late-game scrum but we'll have to wait to hear whether he'll miss any time. Steve Downie's goal snapped an eight-game pointless streak.

Pens' Downie (Undisclosed) Returns Sunday

News: Steve Downie is back in the lineup Sunday against the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Steve Downie was a scratch in Thursday's contest, though no reason was given. It's possible he was just a healthy scratch, but regardless, he's back in the lineup Sunday.

Pens Scratch Downie On Thursday

News: Steve Downie (undisclosed) was a late scratch for Thursday's game against the Senators, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: The Penguins haven't provided an explanation for Steve Downie's absence, but it seems plausible that he sustained some sort of injury in Wednesday's win over the Red Wings. He'll be regarded as day-to-day until the team offers an official update. Zach Sill is slated to assume his spot in the lineup Thursday.

Pens' Downie Extends PIM Lead Wednesday

News: Steve Downie registered 15 PIM on Wednesday against the Capitals.
Analysis: Ten of those minutes came courtesy of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty -- "Abuse of Officials" call. Steve Downie, who entered Wednesday as the only NHL player with at least 100 penalty minutes, now leads the league with 167 PIM. Surprisingly, Downie's 22 points are just six fewer than Scott Hartnell and three less than Milan Lucic.

Pens' Downie Snaps Slump Wednesday

News: Steve Downie netted his eighth goal of the season Wednesday against the Blackhawks.
Analysis: The game not only marked his first goal since Jan. 2, but also his first positive plus-minus rating since the same date. Steve Downie has seen his offensive production fall off since moving down to the third line, though he did see 5:33 TOI on the team's second power-play unit Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Pens' Downie Unable To Keep Emotions In Check

News: Steve Downie returned to action Friday, going pointless with a late third-period penalty that effectively ending Pittsburgh's chances for a comeback.
Analysis: Steve Downie has played a surprisingly disciplined brand of hockey in recent weeks, but he took a slashing penalty with less than three minutes remaining in regulation of a one-goal game. We'll have to wait until Sunday to see if he's entered coach Mike Johnston's doghouse. On the positive side, Downie appeared healthy after taking an elbow to the noggin Tuesday.

Pens' Downie (Head) To Play Friday

News: Steve Downie (head) will play Friday against the Islanders.
Analysis: Ryan Suter was handed a two-game suspension for an elbow to the head of Steve Downie on Tuesday night, but it looks like the Pens winger won't be forced to miss any action of his own. Downie resumed practicing Wednesday and was a full participant in the Pens' morning skate Friday, drawing in on the third line.

Pens' Downie (Head) Back On Ice Wednesday

News: Steve Downie (head) was able to practice Wednesday, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: After taking an elbow to the head and falling to the ice in Tuesday's win over the Wild, it was feared that Steve Downie might have sustained a concussion. However, his presence at practice suggests he passed all of the protocols, and it's expected that he'll be ready to go for Friday's game against the Islanders. It's an excellent bit of news for the Penguins and the rugged winger, who leads the league with 141 PIM.

Downie Leaves Pens' Game On Tuesday

News: Steve Downie left the first period of Tuesday's game after taking a Ryan Suter elbow to his head and didn't return.
Analysis: It looks as if the rugged forward likely suffered some sort of head injury, likely a concussion. His stock has taken a hit in recent games. As the team's health has improved, Steve Downie has moved down from the first line to the third. He'll still provide ample penalty minutes, however.

Pens' Downie Leaves After Elbow To Head

News: Steve Downie took an elbow to the head in the second period of Tuesday's game against the Wild and didn't return, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: He fell to the ice in a heap after Wild defenseman Ryan Suter appeared to intentionally strike him in the face when he was pursuing a loose puck. Steve Downie's situation is certainly worth monitoring over the next few days; he suffered multiple concussions last season, which perhaps make him more susceptible to a long-term absence than most. The forward has been useful on both ends of the ice for the Penguins this season, accumulating 20 points and a league-leading 141 PIM over 37 games.

Pens' Downie Offensive Stock Trending Downward

News: Playing on a third line with Brandon Sutter and Bryan Rust on Saturday, Steve Downie went pointless on four shots, finishing minus-1 against Montreal.
Analysis: The feisty forward's offensive stock is trending downward, now that Pittsburgh replaced him with David Perron and Chris Kunitz on the team's no. 1 line with Sidney Crosby. Steve Downie is playing well, but his opportunities to contribute offensively have diminished a bit. He remains a top-tier threat to register penalty minutes.

Pens' Downie Displays Offensive Touch In Return

News: Steve Downie tallied his sixth and seventh goals Friday in his first game since returning from the mumps.
Analysis: While one of his scores came at even strength and the other on an empty net, Steve Downie served as Pittsburgh's net-front presence for the team's No. 1 power-play unit. He created numerous opportunities and looked entirely comfortable there with the unit's skill level -- the forward could see additional time there with Patric Hornqvist sidelined for at least two more weeks. Downie now has 19 points (7G, 12A) in 33 games, along with an NHL-leading 137 penalty minutes.

Pens' Downie (Illness) Back In Friday

News: Steve Downie (illness) will return to the lineup Friday against the Lightning, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Steve Downie was a full participant in Friday's morning skate, allowing coach Mike Johnston to feel comfortable bringing him back into the the lineup for the first time since Dec. 20. The winger has been a useful option on both ends of the ice for the Penguins this season, providing a respectable five goals and 17 points in 32 games to go along with his league-leading total of 135 PIM.

Pens' Downie (Illness) 'Close' To Playing

News: Steve Downie (illness) is considered "close" to playing Friday against Tampa Bay, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Coach Mike Johnston said Steve Downie is nearing a return, and if he feels better Friday morning, he would appear to have a solid chance of taking the ice. Downie missed Wednesday's game and has not played since Dec. 22 while recovering from the mumps.

Pens' Downie Skates With Team Wednesday

News: Steve Downie (illness) rejoined the Penguins for their morning skate Wednesday, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Coach Mike Johnston said Steve Downie wouldn't be an option for Wednesday's tilt with the Hurricanes, but did note that the forward is "close" to a return. He's been out of the lineup since Dec. 22 while dealing with and subsequently recovering from the mumps, but could be back from Friday's tilt with the Lightning.

Pens' Downie Skates Prior To Tuesday's Practice

News: Steve Downie (mumps) skated prior to Tuesday's practice.
Analysis: While he's not yet a full participant in practices just yet, Steve Downie's return to the team suggests that he's past the contagious stage of his battle with the mumps. He'll probably need a few days before the Penguins are convinced his energy is up to par, so don't look for him to return to the lineup until the weekend at the earliest.

Penguins' Downie Diagnosed With Mumps

News: Steve Downie has been diagnosed with the mumps, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Steve Downie first started showing mumps symptoms earlier this week, and it turns out he is the latest to come down with the disease that is sweeping through the NHL. He will remain isolated from his teammates until he has recovered, but figures to resume playing sometime in the next week or two.

No Mumps Update Until Friday For Pens' Downie

News: The results of Steve Downie's tests for the mumps won't be available until Friday.
Analysis: With the NHL observing a three-day break in the schedule for the holidays, the status of Steve Downie, Brandon Sutter, and Thomas Greiss will remain shrouded in mystery until the Pens reconvene for practice. Downie has already missed the team's previous two games as a precaution.

Pens' Downie Remains Out Tuesday

News: Steve Downie (illness) won't be available Tuesday versus the Lightning.
Analysis: It would seem the Penguins are still awaiting results on the tests for the mumps that three players underwent Monday, as none of Steve Downie, Thomas Greiss or Brandon Sutter will be available for Tuesday's match. More information regarding Downie's condition, as well as those of his teammates, should be revealed at some point during the upcoming Christmas break.

Penguins' Downie Being Tested For Mumps

News: Steve Downie is being tested for the mumps and will not play in Monday's game against the Panthers, Josh Yohe of The Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Steve Downie flew with his teammates to Florida for Monday's game, but the Penguins sent him back home after he showed potential symptoms of the mumps. The Penguins play in Tampa on Tuesday, and it remains to be seen if Downie will be able to rejoin the team prior to that contest.

Downie Points and PIM Machine Marches On With Pens

News: Steve Downie picked up a pair of primary assists and was penalized 17 minutes Saturday against the Panthers.
Analysis: Not a bad night's work, considering he saw less than six minutes of ice time (5:56 TOI). Steve Downie now has two goals and seven points in his last six games, but keep in mind that he's no longer playing as a top-six forward following the returns of Patric Hornqvist and Chris Kunitz.

Pens' Downie Delivers Monday

News: Steve Downie potted a power-play goal and added an assist in a 4-2 win over the Bolts on Monday.
Analysis: He also collected a team-high six hits and blocked three shots. Steve Downie has served as a third-line right winger in the last two games on a line centered by Marcel Goc with Bobby Farnham, proving his versatility. He now has two goals and five points in his last four contests, adding 33 PIM and 10 hits over the span.

Pens' Downie Flys Off Handle Saturday

News: Steve Downie delivered 29 penalty minutes in 8:13 TOI and 11 shifts Saturday against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: He retaliated against Brandon Dubinsky, who was penalized for charging the Penguin forward. After sitting with 19 penalty minutes for most of the contest, Steve Downie upped his PIM total to 29 minutes via a misconduct call with 26 ticks remaining in regulation -- old habits are hard to break.
