Pens' Downie Taking Advantage Of Opportunity

News: Steve Downie scored Pittsburgh's lone goal in a 4-1 loss to Minnesota on Monday.
Analysis: Steve Downie projects as a third line winger for the Pens, but he could see some time as a top-six forward due to injury. Downie could surprise after being reunited with assistant coach, Rick Tocchet. The winger scored 22 goals, 46 points, 208 PIM in 79 games in 2009-10 when Tocchet coached him in Tampa Bay.

Penguins Sign Downie

News: The Penguins have signed Steve Downie (ear) to a one-year, $1 million contract, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Steve Downie, who notched 24 points in 62 games between the Avalanche and Flyers this past season, will no doubt add some sandpaper to the Penguins' forward mix. Whether he adds a ton beyond PIM (he had 106 last season) hinges on which line he skates with in Pittsburgh, where he's reunited with his former head coach in Tampa Bay, Rick Tocchet, who now serves as the Penguins assistant coach.

Flyers' Downie To Have Surgery On Ear

News: Steve Downie was scheduled to undergo surgery on his right ear Wednesday.
Analysis: The procedure was designed to correct a hearing loss issue Steve Downie had been experienced, undoubtedly a byproduct of the multiple concussions he endured this season. Injury issues limited Downie's effectiveness after he was dealt to Philadelphia on Oct. 31, with the winger contributing only 17 points over 51 games.

Flyers' Downie Still Out

News: Steve Downie (upper body) remains out indefinitely, Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Analysis: The report suggests that Steve Downie is suffering from concussion-like symptoms, but in any case, there's no timetable for the forward's return to action. Downie last suited up for the Flyers on April 10.

Flyers' Downie Out For Game 1

News: Steve Downie (upper body) will not play in Game 1 of the Flyers' first-round series against the Rangers, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: It's not much of a surprise after Steve Downie was unable to take part in Wednesday's practice. Zac Rinaldo will take his spot on the Flyers' fourth line.

Flyers' Downie Misses Practice

News: Steve Downie (upper body) did not practice Wednesday, Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Analysis: There's still no update on Steve Downie's condition, but it's a little troubling that he returned from a head injury just last week. Keep an eye on the team's morning skate Thursday prior to Game 1, but it sounds like he'll probably be watching from the press box.

Flyers' Downie Day-To-Day

News: Steve Downie is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: After not taking the ice Tuesday, Steve Downie is decidedly iffy for Thursday's playoff opener against the Rangers.

Flyers' Downie Out Saturday

News: Steve Downie will miss Saturday's contest against the Penguins, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: Steve Downie returned to the ice on Tuesday from a head injury and played again on Thursday. It is unclear why Downie won't suit up on Saturday, but the likeliest scenario is just a rest day.

Flyers' Downie Back In Business

News: Steve Downie will suit up for Tuesday's game against the Panthers, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: With 24 points in 60 games to date, Steve Downie has been most helpful to fantasy owners in leagues where his 106 penalty minutes factor in.

Flyers' Downie Still Not Ready To Return

News: Steve Downie (head) has missed six straight games, but Flyers coach Craig Berube insists he will be part of the lineup when he's healthy, reports Sam Carchidi of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Analysis: Tye McGinn has been filling in for the ailing winger in the meantime. The Flyers haven't fared well during Steve Downie's absence. The defense has been shaky and the offense lifeless, so fans and fantasy owners alike are hoping for a speedy return.

Flyers' Downie Still Out

News: Steve Downie (head) won't play Tuesday against the Blues, CSN Philadelphia reports.
Analysis: Though Steve Downie passed his baseline concussion test on Monday, the report notes that the forward (who is listed as day-to-day by the Flyers) lacks game conditioning at this stage.

Flyers' Downie Practices Saturday

News: Steve Downie (head) took part in practice Saturday, Sarah Baiker of CSNPhilly.com reports.
Analysis: Though Steve Downie was never technically diagnosed with a concussion, GM Paul Holmgren is treating his injury as if that's what it is. Downie will likely have to pass a barrage of tests before he is allowed to participate in game-action.

Flyers' Downie Could Return Sunday

News: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said Friday that Steve Downie (head) could return for Sunday's game against the Bruins, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: Holmgren previously said the team was treating Steve Downie as if the forward had a concussion, but a diagnosis was never confirmed. The possibility for a quick return indicates that Downie either didn't suffer a concussion or is dealing with a relatively minor one. He's not playing in Friday's game vs. the Maple Leafs but can be considered day-to-day.

Flyers' Downie Might Have Concussion

News: GM Paul Holmgren said the Flyers are treating Steve Downie as though he's dealing with a concussion, CSN Philly's Sarah Baicker reports.
Analysis: Holmgren wouldn't go as far to admit outright that Steve Downie suffered a concussion, as the forward likely still has to undergo neurological testing before a determination on that matter is made. Downie hasn't been ruled out for Friday's game against Toronto, but the fact that Holmgren would even suggest a concussion is in play would make it seem unlikely that Downie will be available.

Flyers' Downie Could Skate Thursday

News: Steve Downie (upper body) did not participate in Wednesday's morning skate, Sarah Baicker of CSN Philadelphia reports.
Analysis: There's still no word on exactly what is ailing Steve Downie, but he can be counted out for Wednesday's game against the Rangers. There's a chance that he'll skate Thursday morning, but it sounds like his status for Friday's game against the Maple Leafs is cloudy as well.

Flyers' Downie Likely Out Again Wednesday

News: Steve Downie (upper body) is not expected to play Wednesday against the Rangers, CSN Philadelphia's Sarah Baicker reports.
Analysis: Steve Downie was not on the ice for Tuesday's practice, with GM Paul Holmgren noting that there's been no change in the forward's status since he first sustained the injury Saturday against the Blues. Tye McGinn will take his spot in the lineup Wednesday for the second straight game.

Flyers' Downie Day-To-Day

News: Steve Downie is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, the Flyers' official site reports.
Analysis: With Steve Downie day-to-day in advance of Monday's game against the Kings, the Flyers have recalled fellow forward Tye McGinn.

Flyers' Downie Leaves Early With Upper-Body Injury

News: Steve Downie left Saturday's game in the first period with an upper-body injury.
Analysis: Steve Downie suffered the injury when he collided with the Blues' Patrik Berglund in what appeared to be accidental on the part of both players. He fell down on the ice hard after the collision and might be at risk for another concussion.

Flyers' Downie Back At Practice

News: Steve Downie (illness) returned to practice Monday, CSN Philly's Tim Panaccio reports.
Analysis: A bout with the flu forced Steve Downie out of the Flyers' most recent game Saturday vs. the Leafs, but his return to the ice Monday suggests he's put the illness behind him. Look for him to return to the lineup Tuesday vs. the Devils.

Flyers' Downie To Sit Out Saturday

News: Steve Downie (illness) will not play Saturday vs. the Maple Leafs, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: Steve Downie apparently came down with a case of the flu over the afternoon and will take Saturday off to rest up and recover. Jay Rosehill enters the lineup in his stead.

Downie Collects Assist In Flyers' Blowout Loss

News: Steve Downie collected one assist in Thursday's 7-3 loss to San Jose.
Analysis: Steve Downie hasn't found the back of the net since the Iron Age, also known as December 11. That's not encouraging news for a winger, especially since coach Craig Berube has been steadily chopping away his ice time. He's picked up a few assists lately after a 15-game pointless streak, but he'll need to find the back of the net before he'll warrant a start in most leagues.

Flyers' Downie Fails To Score

News: Steve Downie last tallied a goal on December 11, but has five assists in the 24 games he has played since.
Analysis: Steve Downie has not been much help for the Flyers since they acquired him back in October. He only has two goals and 13 assists in 39 games since the trade. Downie's intensity has been questioned by Coach Craig Berube and he has been a healthy scratch several times this season.

Flyers' Downie Quiet In Return

News: Steve Downie, making his return to the lineup after two consecutive healthy scratches, skated 10:38 with no points and no shots on goal in Thursday's shootout loss to Nashville. He blocked one shot and laid two hits.
Analysis: Not the most impressive return for Steve Downie, who had his intensity level questioned by coach Craig Berube when he was scratched. Thursday's performance won't go a terribly long way toward changing that assessment, though it's worth noting that the winger hadn't collected multiple hits in a game since Dec. 28.

Flyers' Downie Will Be In Lineup

News: Steve Downie will be in the lineup Thursday vs. the Predators.
Analysis: Coach Craig Berube indicated during pregame warmups that he was still considering his lineup for Thursday's game, but it looks like he'll give Steve Downie the opportunity to redeem himself after he spent the last two games in the press box. Downie enters Thursday with no points in any of his last nine games.

Flyers' Downie A Game-Time Decision Thursday

News: Coach Craig Berube said he hasn't determined yet whether or not Steve Downie will be in the lineup Thursday against Nashville, Frank Cervalli of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Analysis: It was assumed Steve Downie would draw back into the lineup after taking part in line rushes during the morning skate, but Berube's refusal to announce his return suggests the forward still may be in the coach's doghouse. Jay Rosehill will make another appearance as the fourth-line left wing if Downie is once again a healthy scratch.
