Pens' Downie Delivers Monday

News: Steve Downie potted a power-play goal and added an assist in a 4-2 win over the Bolts on Monday.
Analysis: He also collected a team-high six hits and blocked three shots. Steve Downie has served as a third-line right winger in the last two games on a line centered by Marcel Goc with Bobby Farnham, proving his versatility. He now has two goals and five points in his last four contests, adding 33 PIM and 10 hits over the span.

Pens' Downie Flys Off Handle Saturday

News: Steve Downie delivered 29 penalty minutes in 8:13 TOI and 11 shifts Saturday against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: He retaliated against Brandon Dubinsky, who was penalized for charging the Penguin forward. After sitting with 19 penalty minutes for most of the contest, Steve Downie upped his PIM total to 29 minutes via a misconduct call with 26 ticks remaining in regulation -- old habits are hard to break.

Downie Not Slowing Down For Pens

News: Steve Downie collected an assist, three hits, two PIM and a plus-1 rating Friday against Calgary.
Analysis: He continues to take advantage of top-six minutes and time on the team's No. 2 power play. Steve Downie has shown an offensive flair, scoring four goals and 13 points in 28 games while providing his customary ruggedness -- 85 PIM and 43 hits. He's tempered his anger on an injury-depleted Pittsburgh squad, showing improved discipline since early in the season.

Downie Helps Get Pens A Point Monday

News: Steve Downie scored one goal and assisted on another in Monday's 4-3 OT loss against the Rangers.
Analysis: Steve Downie, who was the only Penguin to finish plus-2 against New York, acquitted himself quite nicely while skating right wing to Sidney Crosby. He could stay there for a while with Patric Hornqvist potentially out due to a concussion. Of course, fantasy owners look to Downie for penalty minutes and he has just four PIM in his last eight games.

Pens' Downie Gets Top Billing Saturday

News: Steve Downie will serve as a top-six winger for the Pens on Saturday, skating at right wing next to Sidney Crosby.
Analysis: Steve Downie and Nick Spaling will play with Crosby for an injury-raved Pittsburgh squad against the Senators. Downie has 10 points (3G, 7A) in 25 games and an NHL-leading 83 PIM and 35 hits. He even saw a bit of time on the team's top power-play unit when Patric Hornqvist went down Thursday with a possible concussion.

Pens' Downie Drops The Gloves Saturday

News: Steve Downie spent 17 minutes in the penalty box Saturday against the Islanders.
Analysis: Donwie earned a five-minute penalty for fighting with Travis Hamonic in the first period and would later receive a 10-minute misconduct in the third. That penalty would ultimately yield a power-play goal for the Islanders that essentially salted the game away, but Steve Downie's fantasy owners won't be negatively impacted. The winger's 79 penalty minutes on the season lead the league and make him a major asset in that category, but he's not a total liability elsewhere like most bottom-six forwards. He's been a viable contributor on offense with his new team, netting three goals and seven assists over 19 games.

Downie Part Of Pens' Big Third Line Tuesday

News: Steve Downie scored one goal and assisted on another Tuesday, finishing plus-3 against the Canadiens.
Analysis: For the first time in seven games, Steve Downie failed to take at least one penalty -- a good sign for his future on the team's third line. Chances are the feisty forward will revert back to his penalty-taking ways for fantasy owners, perhaps as soon as Friday against the Islanders.

Downie PIM Streaking For Pens

News: Steve Downie takes a six-game penalty streak (35 PIM) into Tuesday's game against Montreal.
Analysis: Along with Dion Phaneuf, Steve Downie leads the NHL with 15 minor penalties in 16 games. Playing primarily on Pittsburgh's third line with Brandon Sutter and now Beau Bennett, the points have dried up for Downie -- he's scoreless in four -- though he does seven points (2G,5A) overall. He leads the league with 60 penalty minutes, but the minors continue to put the Pens in bad spots. As a result, there's a chance coach Johnston sits Downie as a healthy scratch at times -- at the least, it's something for Downie fantasy owners to keep an eye on.

Pens' Downie Left Game As Precautionary Measure

News: Steve Downie, who will play Tuesday, left Saturday's game as a precautionary measure after hitting his head on the ice during a fight with Mike Weber.
Analysis: Steve Downie and Weber both hit the ice will holding on to each other's sweaters. The physical forward was a full participant in Monday's practice and showed no ill-effects from his fight. Downie has carved out a spot on Pittsburgh's third line with his combination of offensive production and fighting ability.

Pens' Downie Will Play Tuesday

News: Steve Downie (undisclosed) is healthy and will play Tuesday against the Rangers, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Steve Downie left Saturday's game after getting banged up in a fight, but is feeling fine and will play Tuesday. The gritty winger has racked up two goals, five assists, and a league-leading 54 PIM in 13 games to date.

Pens' Downie Hurt In Fight Saturday?

News: Steve Downie left Saturday's game early with an undisclosed injury.
Analysis: He didn't see much time after fighting Mike Weber in the second period. Steve Downie skated 12 shifts, recorded one shot, and added to his league-leading total of 54 penalty minutes before exiting the game.

Downie Getting It Done For Pens

News: Steve Downie racked up a goal, an assist, three hits, 22 PIM and a plus-3 rating Thursday against the Jets.
Analysis: He got into it with Dustin Byfuglien, but wasn't flagged for fighting, so he failed to record the sought-after Gordie Howe hat trick. Pittsburgh's third line of Steve Downie, Brandon Sutter and Nick Spaling has outshined both Sidney Crosby's and Evgeni Malkin's lines in the last two games -- something that hasn't often happened since the days of Jordan Staal, Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy. Downie now has two goals, five assists and 34 penalty minutes in his last eight contests.

Downie Looks Up In Pens' Win Tuesday

News: Steve Downie was named the No. 1 star Tuesday after collecting two points on the power play, including a goal and an assist.
Analysis: He saw his power-play time with the Penguins already up by two goals in the third period, but Steve Downie showed off some of his offensive talent for one of the first times in a Pittsburgh sweater. The rugged forward finished with four shots on goal, two penalty minutes, one block and a minus-1 rating in just over 13 minutes (13:18) of action.

Penalty Minutes In Store For Pens' Downie?

News: Steve Downie makes for a good penalty-minutes play Wednesday, as he suits up against Philadelphia in a heated rivalry between the two Pennsylvanian teams.
Analysis: The former Flyer, who has yet to pick up a point in four games, collected 13 PIM Saturday against the Islanders. The Penguins and Philly have a history of mixing things up and Steve Downie figures to be at the center of the contentiousness Wednesday.

Pens' Downie Will Play Thursday Despite Injury

News: Penguins head coach Mark Johnston said Steve Downie missed practice on Sunday because of a minor shoulder injury, but will play Thursday, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Steve Downie, who is known more for his toughness, has only managed two shots on goal and two penalty minutes in two games this season. He's more of a role player for Pittsburgh, so he really only has value in deeper leagues.

Pens' Downie Doesn't Practice Sunday

News: Steve Downie didn't practice with the team Sunday, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: No explanation was given for Steve Downie's absence, but the team's next game isn't until Thursday, so unless it's something injury-related that turns out to be serious, he shouldn't miss any time.

Pens' Downie Taking Advantage Of Opportunity

News: Steve Downie scored Pittsburgh's lone goal in a 4-1 loss to Minnesota on Monday.
Analysis: Steve Downie projects as a third line winger for the Pens, but he could see some time as a top-six forward due to injury. Downie could surprise after being reunited with assistant coach, Rick Tocchet. The winger scored 22 goals, 46 points, 208 PIM in 79 games in 2009-10 when Tocchet coached him in Tampa Bay.

Penguins Sign Downie

News: The Penguins have signed Steve Downie (ear) to a one-year, $1 million contract, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Steve Downie, who notched 24 points in 62 games between the Avalanche and Flyers this past season, will no doubt add some sandpaper to the Penguins' forward mix. Whether he adds a ton beyond PIM (he had 106 last season) hinges on which line he skates with in Pittsburgh, where he's reunited with his former head coach in Tampa Bay, Rick Tocchet, who now serves as the Penguins assistant coach.

Flyers' Downie To Have Surgery On Ear

News: Steve Downie was scheduled to undergo surgery on his right ear Wednesday.
Analysis: The procedure was designed to correct a hearing loss issue Steve Downie had been experienced, undoubtedly a byproduct of the multiple concussions he endured this season. Injury issues limited Downie's effectiveness after he was dealt to Philadelphia on Oct. 31, with the winger contributing only 17 points over 51 games.

Flyers' Downie Still Out

News: Steve Downie (upper body) remains out indefinitely, Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Analysis: The report suggests that Steve Downie is suffering from concussion-like symptoms, but in any case, there's no timetable for the forward's return to action. Downie last suited up for the Flyers on April 10.

Flyers' Downie Out For Game 1

News: Steve Downie (upper body) will not play in Game 1 of the Flyers' first-round series against the Rangers, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: It's not much of a surprise after Steve Downie was unable to take part in Wednesday's practice. Zac Rinaldo will take his spot on the Flyers' fourth line.

Flyers' Downie Misses Practice

News: Steve Downie (upper body) did not practice Wednesday, Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Analysis: There's still no update on Steve Downie's condition, but it's a little troubling that he returned from a head injury just last week. Keep an eye on the team's morning skate Thursday prior to Game 1, but it sounds like he'll probably be watching from the press box.

Flyers' Downie Day-To-Day

News: Steve Downie is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: After not taking the ice Tuesday, Steve Downie is decidedly iffy for Thursday's playoff opener against the Rangers.

Flyers' Downie Out Saturday

News: Steve Downie will miss Saturday's contest against the Penguins, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: Steve Downie returned to the ice on Tuesday from a head injury and played again on Thursday. It is unclear why Downie won't suit up on Saturday, but the likeliest scenario is just a rest day.

Flyers' Downie Back In Business

News: Steve Downie will suit up for Tuesday's game against the Panthers, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: With 24 points in 60 games to date, Steve Downie has been most helpful to fantasy owners in leagues where his 106 penalty minutes factor in.
