Panthers' Gilbert To Undergo Season-Ending Surgery

News: Tom Gilbert will undergo season-ending sports hernia surgery Thursday, Craig Davis of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: Perhaps the sports hernia injury explains Tom Gilbert's vanishing production, as the defenseman totaled only four points in his past 21 games. The procedure will likely only require a couple of months of recovery time, which shouldn't hurt Gilbert's chances of landing a deal in free agency. He finishes the 2013-14 campaign with 28 points, 59 hits and 95 blocks over 73 contests.

Panthers' Gilbert Is Ice Cold

News: Tom Gilbert was held pointless yet again in 20:56 minutes of ice-time Tuesday night as the Panthers fell 3-2 to the Senators in a shootout.
Analysis: After scoring 24 points in his first 52 games this season, Tom Gilbert has only tallied one goal and three assists in his past 21 games. He still plays top-four minutes for the Cats, but the post-Olympic break has been a big disappointment for the veteran defenseman.

Panthers' Gilbert Scores In Victory

News: Tom Gilbert scored his third goal of the season in Tuesday night's 4-1 win over the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Tom Gilbert is tied with Brian Campbell for the team lead in points by a defenseman with 25. The two form quite the offensive tandem as the Panthers' top defensive pair and they both see top minutes on the power play. Gilbert is worth the pickup if he is somehow still on the waiver wire.

Gilbert Active In Florida Loss

News: Tom Gilbert assisted on both Florida goals in Friday's loss to Colorado, giving him four assists in the last two games.
Analysis: Tom Gilbert has quietly been one of the league's more rewarding waiver pickups, giving owners a healthy amount of assists on a team that has trouble scoring at times. Gilbert has 20 assists on the year and isn't a bad option in a pinch for those in daily leagues.

Gilbert Notches 20th Point In Panthers' Win

News: Tom Gilbert notched two assists in Tuesday night's 4-3 win over Buffalo.
Analysis: The 31-year-old defensman reached the 20 point plateau for the first time since 2010-2011, when he scored 26 points in 79 games. Tom Gilbert now has 20 points in 50 games this season and appears to be comfortable logging top-four minutes in Florida. He is worth the pickup for those lacking depth on the back-end.

Gilbert Has Goal, Assist In Panthers' Win

News: Tom Gilbert logged his first goal of the season and an assist in Thursday's 4-2 win over Ottawa.
Analysis: The points snap a six-game point scoring drought for the seventh year man. While Tom Gilbert has not been producing during the Panthers recent five-game winning streak and his ice time has dwindled as a result, he's managed a goal and ten assists through 35 games. Still, Dylan Olsen could be a better option for those in deeper leagues.

Gilbert's Three Helpers Carry Panthers Over Avs

News: Tom Gilbert posted three assists to take home first-star honors Saturday in a 4-1 win over Colorado.
Analysis: He's yet to find nylon on his own this season, but with seven assists in 21 games, Tom Gilbert's on pace to match his career norms for scoring.

Panthers Ink Gilbert To One-Year Deal

News: Tom Gilbert signed a one-year deal with the Panthers on Saturday, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: The Panthers were pleased enough with what they saw from Tom Gilbert on a tryout basis that they officially decided to bring him onto the active roster with the contract offer. Gilbert tallied 13 points while averaging 19:19 of ice time over 43 games with the Wild last season.

Gilbert: To Join Panthers on Tryout Offer

News: Tom Gilbert is expected to accept a professional tryout offer with the Panthers, Darren Dreger of TSN reports.
Analysis: This is the low-risk, high-reward signing for the Panthers as they lack defenseman with offensive upside. Tom Gilbert put up 13 points in 43 games with Minnesota last season and could see power-play time with the Panthers if he makes the team.

Former Wild Defender Gilbert Headed To Switzerland?

News: Tom Gilbert is thinking about playing in Switzerland this season, reports Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal. There has been little interest in him as a free agent this summer.
Analysis: Things haven't gone so well since he was bought out by the Wild. He's knocked as an offensive-minded defender who doesn't really know how to play in his own zone, but he's not as bad as many think. There are still teams who can use help at the NHL level, so don't count him Switzerland-bound just yet.

Wild Plan To Buy Out Gilbert

News: The Wild plan to use a compliance buyout on Tom Gilbert, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.
Analysis: To that end, the team placed Tom Gilbert on unconditional waivers Wednesday and once he clears, the team will buy the defenseman out. The 30-year-old blueliner notched 13 points in 43 games for the Wild this past season. Gilbert's production has slipped since a 45-point campaign back in 2008-09, but in the right situation, he could bounce back from a fantasy standpoint if he is afforded significant power play duty.

Wild's Gilbert Out With Lower Body Injury

Analysis: Tom Gilbert had previously missed time with an illness this month. Bad timing for him, with the team playing better now.

Wild's Gilbert Will Not Play Monday

News: Tom Gilbert (undisclosed) will not play Monday against the Canucks, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Tom Gilbert missed a game last week with an illness, but it seems unlikely his current ailment would be related. Nate Prosser will fill in Monday, but consider Gilbert day-to-day going forward.

News: Tom Gilbert is feeling under the weather, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: As a result, it looks like Nate Prosser will suit up Sunday against the Canucks in Tom Gilbert's place.

Wild's Gilbert Scores Again

News: Tom Gilbert scored his second goal of the year in Tuesday's win over Columbus.
Analysis: Though he only has one point on the power play, Tom Gilbert is already up to five points through the Wild's first six games. That pace is unlikely to continue, though, as he's on the second-team power play, getting about 2:30 per game on the man advantage.

Gilbert Active In Minnesota Loss

News: Tom Gilbert registered his first points of the season in Friday's loss to Detroit, tallying a power-play goal and an assist.
Analysis: Tom Gilbert has been a streaky player in his career and he is a bit down the depth chart on Minnesota's power play, so expecting a two-point night every game from Gilbert could be a stretch. He's a solid addition to a very deep roster of defensemen, but expect some bumps.

Wild's Gilbert Misses Practice

News: Tom Gilbert (groin) missed practice Thursday, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: We'll have to see if he is able to hit the ice Friday, but Tom Gilbert's groin issue now has his status for Saturday's season opener against the Avalanche in some question.

Wild's Gilbert Hurts Groin

News: Tom Gilbert left Wednesday's scrimmage due to a groin injury, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: The injury is being called minor, but he doesn't have much time to recover with the NHL regular season starting this weekend.

Gilbert Makes Debut For Wild

News: Tom Gilbert, acquired in a deadline day deal with the Oilers, skated for 22:49 in Tuesday's loss to the Kings. It wasn't a good return to his home area for Gilbert or any of the Wild, as they were dominated in a 4-0 game.
Analysis: Other than the loss, if there's one thing to be drawn it's Tom Gilbert's 3:18 of power play time, over a minute more than he's been averaging all season. The Wild only had three power plays, so the fact that he got that much PP time and saw the second most overall ice time on the team tells us he may have a pretty big role with his new squad. Just remember he's not much of a goal scorer, but there may be some assists to be had.
