Coyotes' Hanzal Undergoes Back Surgery

News: Martin Hanzal underwent back surgery Tuesday, formally spelling ending his season, Craig Morgan of FOX Sports Arizona reports.
Analysis: Coach Dave Tippett said the procedure went well for Martin Hanzal, who is expected to be fully healthy for the start of the 2015-16 campaign. The Coyotes already placed him on injured reserve last week.

Yotes' Hanzal To Have Season-Ending Back Surgery

News: Coyotes GM Don Maloney announced Thursday that Martin Hanzal is dealing with a recurring back issue that will require surgery, likely ending his season, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports. "The likelihood of [Hanzal] returning this season is remote, but we do anticipate a full recovery," Maloney said.
Analysis: Martin Hanzal spent most of the past summer rehabbing his back, but continued experience repeated setbacks once the season started, appearing in only 39 of the Coyotes' 55 games to date. Though the forward should be ready to go for the start of 2015-16, staying healthy has never been his forte, as he'll have missed at least 18 games due to injury in all but one of the last five seasons. If there's a silver lining for the Coyotes, it's that the absence of one of their top scorers in Hanzal (eight goals, 16 assists) the rest of the way will improve the team's chances of earning a high selection in a 2015 NHL Entry Draft brimming with talent.

Coyotes Move Hanzal To IR

News: Martin Hanzal (upper body) was placed on injured reserve ahead of Monday's game against the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Martin Hanzal hasn't played since Jan. 29 due to the injury and faces an uncertain return date. Once he gets a few practices in, he'll likely be activated by the Coytoes in short order. In the meantime, moving Hanzal to IR opens up a roster spot for an extra healthy player, should the Coyotes require one.

Coyotes' Hanzal Out Another Week

News: Coach Dave Tippett said Thursday that he expects Martin Hanzal (upper body) to remain out for at least another week, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Repbulic reports.
Analysis: The Coyotes had been considering Martin Hanzal day-to-day in anticipation of his forthcoming return to practice, but he failed to progress as quickly as hoped. As a result, Tippett said Hanzal will be subjected to more tests and reevaluated at some point next week to see how he's come along at that time. He could be transferred to injured reserve if the Coyotes decide to recall an extra skater in the near future.

Coyotes' Hanzal Not Showing Improvement

News: Martin Hanzal (upper body) is not progressing from his injury and is still considered day-to-day, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Martin Hanzal was already questionable to return for Tuesday's contest against the Blue Jackets, but the news that his upper body injury isn't getting any better suggests he could be forced out of action for a third straight game. If he is unable to return by Tuesday, his next chance to return to the lineup will be on Thursday against the Hurricanes.

Coyotes' Hanza (Upper Body) Out Sunday

News: Martin Hanzal won't play Sunday against the Canadiens, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Martin Hanzal was considered questionable coming into the contest with an upper-body injury, but it appears he will require at least a couple more days off. His next chance to return to the lineup will come Tuesday against the Blue Jackets.

Coyotes' Hanzal Has Upper-Body Injury

News: The Coyotes announced prior to Saturday's game against the Senators that Martin Hanzal is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Martin Hanzal's injury was deemed "minor" by coach Dave Tippett on Friday, and the day-to-day designation would seem to verify that's indeed the case. The Coyotes will check in on his condition Sunday morning before deciding if he'll be available for the matinee with the Canadiens.

Coyotes' Hanzal To Sit Out Saturday's Game

News: Martin Hanzal (undisclosed) will miss Saturday's game against the Senators, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Martin Hanzal was held out of Friday's practice for what was believed to be maintenance-related reasons, but it looks like he's dealing with a legitimate injury. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Brandon McMillan and should be considered day-to-day at this time, making him questionable to play Sunday in Montreal. Hanzal has eight goals and 24 points in 37 games this season.

Coyotes' Hanzal Nursing Minor Injury

News: Martin Hanzal missed Friday's practice with an undisclosed injury, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Coach Dave Tippett referred to Martin Hanzal's ailment as a "minor issue," and anticipates that the forward will be available for Saturday's game in Ottawa. Hanzal, who tallied a goal and fired off six shots attempts in Thursday's win over the Leafs, should have his status for Saturday's game validated following the Coyotes' morning skate.

Coyotes' Hanzal Scores In Win

News: Martin Hanzal picked up his eighth goal of the season Thursday in a win over Toronto. He was plus-1 with six shots and three hits in the contest.
Analysis: Coming off his first 40-point season, Martin Hanzal has disappointed this year, but it has largely been due once again to his inability to stay on the ice. His point-per-game rate this season is that of a 50-point player, but as has been the case in almost every season of his career he has missed more than 10 games this season and it impedes his production.

Coyotes' Hanzal Picks Up Helper In Loss

News: Martin Hanzal had an assist Sunday in a shootout loss to Winnipeg. He laid three hits, but failed to register a shot on net.
Analysis: On a per-game basis, Martin Hanzal is actually slightly ahead of his pace from last season when he posted a career-high 40 points. As has often been the case throughout his career, however, the towering Czech has been unable to stay healthy - he has missed 11 games already this year. With the Coyotes sure to make some moves to rebuild as the trade deadline approaches, Hanzal's future with the club may be up in the air.

Coyotes Activate Hanzal (Upper Body) From IR

News: Martin Hanzal (upper body) was activated from injured reserve Thursday, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: As anticipated, Martin Hanzal will rejoin the lineup Thursday against the Flames following a four-game absence due to the injury. He's set to center the Coyotes' second line, with Sam Gagner and Mikkel Boedker flanking him.

Coyotes' Hanzal (Upper Body) Practices Wednesday

News: Martin Hanzal (upper body) participated in Wednesday's practice, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: The forward was moved to injured reserve Tuesday, but because he's already missed over a week of action, he would be eligible to return for the Coyotes' next game Thursday against the Flames. It remains to be seen if that's the case, but the team should provide an update on his availability following Thursday's gameday skate.

News: Martin Hanzal (upper body) is slated to play Thursday against the Flames, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.

Coyotes' Hanzal Lands On IR For Now

News: The Coyotes placed Martin Hanzal (upper body) on injured reserve Tuesday, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Martin Hanzal could return to action as soon as Thursday, but with him already missing a week of action, and the Coyotes in need of a roster spot, he was placed on IR for the time being. Expect the Coyotes to provide an update on his health prior to their next game.

Coyotes Rule Hanzal (Upper Body) Out Saturday

News: Martin Hanzal (upper body) has been ruled out for Saturday's game against the Senators, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Martin Hanzal is being labeled as day-to-day by the Coyotes, but since he hasn't resumed skating with the team, he won't be an option for Saturday. He'll sit out for a third straight game.

Coyotes' Hanzal Uncertain For Saturday

News: Martin Hanzal (upper body) remains day-to-day after missing Thursday's game, but has a chance to play Saturday, according to Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic.
Analysis: Martin Hanzal has missed two straight games and nine on the season. Hanzal has shown the upside to be one of the league's better power forwards, but Injuries have limited his production in past seasons and this one appears headed in that direction too.

Coyotes' Hanzal Likely Out Again Tuesday

News: Martin Hanzal (upper body) wasn't on the ice for morning skate and is thus likely to miss Thursday's game against the Jets, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Martin Hanzal was previously a late scratch on Tuesday due to the injury, so he'll miss his second straight game. His absence will force to reshuffle their lineup, as Sam Gagner will move from the wing to take over as the second-line center, while Lucas Lessio and Mikkel Boedker flank him.

Coyotes' Hanzal (Upper Body) Out Tuesday

News: Martin Hanzal will miss Tuesday's game against the Blues due to an upper-body injury, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: The Coyotes didn't hold a morning skate, so word of Martin Hanzal's injury wasn't relayed until pregame warmups. The forward likely obtained the injury at some point during his one-goal, three-point performance over the weekend against the Blue Jackets. He's considered day-to-day.

Coyotes' Hanzal Generates Assist Trick

News: Martin Hanzal handed out three assists and went plus-4 in Tuesday's rout of the Oilers.
Analysis: The fine outing marks Martin Hanzal's first multi-point effort since his Nov. 14 hat trick against Vancouver, and just his third of the year overall. Those three games have accounted for nearly half of Hanzal's 17 points on the season, and yet even with that degree of inconsistency, he's essentially duplicating last year's scoring rate.

New Father Hanzal Bags Goal In Coyotes Loss

News: Martin Hanzal netted a goal and spent four minutes in the penalty box in Saturday's loss to the Kings.
Analysis: After witnessing the birth of his child a day earlier, Martin Hanzal didn't join the Coyotes in Los Angeles until Saturday morning, but it didn't seem to affect his performance. The goal was Hanzal's first since Nov. 14 hat trick against the Canucks.

Coyotes' Hanzal Set To Play Saturday

News: Martin Hanzal (personal) joined the team in Los Angeles and looks ready to play Saturday against the Kings, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: After Martin Hanzal missed Friday's practice to await the birth of his child, coach Dave Tippett said that the forward would be back in the lineup Saturday if he were able to rejoin the team in time. Assuming Tippett's word still holds, look for Hanzal to center a second line that includes Tobias Rieder and Sam Gagner.

Coyotes' Hanzal (Personal) Away From Team Friday

News: Martin Hanzal missed Friday's practice to be with his wife, who is expected to give birth to the couple's child, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: It's not clear if he plans on meeting the team in Los Angeles for Saturday's matinee tilt against the Kings. The Coyotes should provide an update on his status prior to the game, but if he remains away from the team, Alexandre Bolduc would likely be called upon to enter the lineup in his place.

Coyotes' Hanzal Returns To Lineup

News: Martin Hanzal didn't register a point in 18:37 of ice time in his return to the lineup Tuesday, a loss to Colorado. He was minus-1, took four shots, had two PIM, and added two hits.
Analysis: When he has been on the ice he has performed well with 11 points in 16 games, but injuries have sabotaged Martin Hanzal in the past and has now missed seven games already this year. His health will determine his success the rest of the way.
