Norrena doing well over in Russia

News: Former Blue Jackets goalie Fredrik Norrena has found a home with Kazan Ak-Bars of the KHL (Russia) after refusing an assignment to Syracuse of the AHL. Norrena is 2-2-0 with a 1.75 GAA and .919 save percentage in his first four games with his new team.
Analysis: Norrena didn't want to accept an assignment to the minors after losing his roster spot to Steve Mason, but he should have figured Pascal Leclaire was going to go down with injury, again. Norrena could easily be back with Columbus at this time since Leclaire is out 10-12 weeks following ankle surgery, but he is over in Russia and has no Fantasy value.

Norrena clears waivers

News: The Columbus Dispatch reports that Blue Jackets G Fredrik Norrena has cleared waivers. He is supposed to be sent down to Syracuse, but he refused a conditioning assignment there recently.
Analysis: With the emergence of Steve Mason, Norrena became expendable and he might end up going back to Europe. You're better off ignoring him in all Fantasy formats for the time being.

Norrena waived by Blue Jackets

News: The Columbus Dispatch reports the Blue Jackets have placed G Fredrik Norrena on waivers.
Analysis: Norrena declined the club's request to go to Syracuse on a conditioning assignment last week, according to the Dispatch, so he's unlikely to go to the AHL. With the emergence of Steve Mason, Norrena has become expendable and some other team could pick him up off waivers, although he wouldn't likely supplant a backup anywhere right away. Continue to ignore him in all Fantasy formats for now.

Norrena off to play in Sweden?

News: The Columbus Dispatch reports that GM Scott Howison is denying a story on a Swedish web site that claims Blue Jackets G Fredrik Norrena has signed with a Linkopings, the Swedish Elite League club he played with from 2003-04 to 2005-06.
Analysis: Norrena wouldn't be crazy to flee to Europe, as he's know clearly the No. 3 goalie in Columbus and could soon be on his way back to the AHL. The Finn has minimal value in Fantasy leagues right now, and would obviously be useless if he left North America completely.

Columbus has some goalie decisions

News: The Sports Xchange reports at some point, the Blue Jackets will have to make a decision. They're carrying three goaltenders -- Pascal Leclaire, Steve Mason and Fredrik Norrena -- and something has to give soon. Leclaire came back from a three-week absence, caused by an ankle injury, to make 36 saves in a 6-1 win over Buffalo on Friday. Mason, a rookie, made 28 saves in a 3-2 shootout loss to Minnesota on Saturday. He has played five NHL games and hasn't had a poor performance yet. Then there's Norrena, the odd man out. Norrena would have to clear waivers to go to the minor leagues, but it's not clear if the Jackets will go that route.
Analysis: Mason needs to play regularly. He won't stay in Columbus only to serve as Leclaire's backup. Since he has options left and it's early in the season, the most logical move would to send Mason back to the minors and use Leclaire and Norrena in net. Columbus has just two games Week 7 (Nov. 17-23), so using Leclaire or Mason is a tough call in Fantasy. However, Leclaire will likely eventual win out as the starter and go back to being a viable No. 2 Fantasy goalie. Mason remains a solid long-term keeper and Norrena has marginal Fantasy value. The Blue Jackets TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.

Leclaire comes off IR

News: The Columbus Dispatch reports that Blue Jackets G Pascal Leclaire is off injured reserve and will back up Steve Mason on Wednesday against the Coyotes.
Analysis: OK, so step one is complete for Leclaire -- he's off IR. Now, how soon will step two -- returning to the starting job -- occur? Leclaire is likely to get a start on Friday or Saturday, as Columbus has back-to-back games, but if he stinks up the joint, look for Mason to continue to get more and more starts. What about Fredrik Norrena, you ask? Well, we'll just have to see if he stays up or it's Mason who gets shipped back to the AHL. For now, you're probably better off benching all three guys in Fantasy Week 7 (Nov. 17-23) until this whole situation clears up.

Norrena dresses as backup goalie

News: Blue Jackets G Fredrik Norrena missed a second straight game Friday against the Canadiens with a sore groin, but dressed as the backup and was available to play in the event Steve Mason needed to leave the game.
Analysis: Mason has won his first two starts for the Blue Jackets and could very well remain in net for Columbus until Pascal Leclaire (ankle) is healthy. That is not good news for Norrena, who was already struggling for PT. Norrena is usually just a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game when healthy, but right now he is a poor Fantasy choice.

Fredrik Norrena

Norrena sits with groin strain

News: Manny Malhotra tipped in a rebound with 69 seconds left, making a winner of prized goalie prospect Steve Mason in his NHL debut and leading the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 5-4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday. Mason, making his fourth professional start and first in the NHL, had 22 saves. He got the start because top goalie Pascal Leclaire is out with an ankle injury and backup Fredrik Norrena hurt his groin during the morning skate Wednesday. Mason was staked a 2-0 lead before allowing four unanswered goals into the third period. He then held Edmonton without a goal in the final 17:53 for the win.
Analysis: Norrena lost his previous two starts and has a 3.16 GAA to go along with a .872 save percentage. It's not like the Blue Jackets had a lot to lose with going with Mason. Norrena will return to being a backup goalie as soon as Leclaire is healthy, but might be forced to backup Mason if the rookie keeps winning. Norrena is usually just a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game when healthy.

S. Mason to make debut Thursday

News: The Columbus Dispatch reports that Blue Jackets G Steve Mason will make his NHL debut Thursday night against the Oilers as Fredrik Norrena has a groin strain.
Analysis: Mason is one of hockey's top goaltending prospects, so many eyes will be on Thursday night's contest in Ohio. While he's unlikely to stick around in Columbus for long, the Blue Jackets are bad enough that they really have nothing to lose by keeping him around for a bit if he proves Thursday that he belongs in the NHL. Still, he remains more of a long-term keeper than anything, so only pick him up in deeper seasonal formats. As for Norrena, he remains a low-end No. 2 option at best while Pascal Leclaire is out. The Blue Jackets TG is barely worth using as a No. 2 unit.

Norrena loses on wacky play

News: Chris Campoli scored 3:13 into overtime past Joey MacDonald during the Islanders 4-3 win Monday. In a wacky final sequence, the defenseman got to a loose puck after teammate Mike Comrie lost it in the Columbus zone and fired a shot past Norrena. Play continued as Campoli celebrated prematurely and then waved his arms to signal that he scored, to no avail. He then took a pass in the slot and drilled another shot into the center of the net. After further review, Campoli was proven right. His initial shot went in. Norrena, who made 25 saves, and Columbus battled back from a 3-0 deficit with three third-period goals. "If you asked me that after two periods, I'd say yes," Norrena said about this being a good point. "But after the third period, I think this is a game we should have won."
Analysis: Norrena is now 1-1-2 in four starts since replacing an injured Pascal Leclaire (ankle) in net. Leclaire returned to practice Monday and could be back in net this week. Once Leclaire returns, Norrena is back to being a backup goalie. Norrena is usually just a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Blue Jackets TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option when Leclaire is healthy.

Norrena to start again Monday

News: The Sports Xchange reports G Pascal Leclaire (ankle) will join the Blue Jackets for practice on Monday but will not start that night vs. the New York Islanders. He'll likely return later in the week. Fredrik Norrena is expected to start Monday.
Analysis: Norrena is 1-1-1 in the three starts since replacing Leclaire. He hasn't been all that bad, allowing just eight goals, so Columbus can afford to be patient with Leclaire. However, he could be back Week 5 (Nov. 3-9), so consider Leclaire a low-end start.

Norrena loses shootout Sat.

News: Columbus G Fredrik Norrena fell to 1-3-1 on Saturday as the Blue Jackets lost 4-3 in a shootout against Chicago. Norrena stopped 21 shots in overtime and regulation but allowed Jonathan Toews to score in the shootout for the victory.
Analysis: Norrena made his third straight start in place of the injured Pascal Leclaire, who is only expected to return to practice Monday as he recovers from an ankle injury. Norrena will return to his backup role as soon Leclaire is healthy, so treat him as a stopgap Fantasy option for the time being. The Blue Jackets TG is at best a No. 2 Fantasy option.

Norrena breaks into win column

News: Fredrik Norrena had 30 saves, and the Columbus Blue Jackets got a rare win in Colorado, beating the Avalanche 4-2 on Thursday. Norrena earned his first win of the season for the Blue Jackets, who ended a three-game losing streak. Paul Stastny ended Norrena's shutout bid with his third goal at 18:30 of the second, and Tyler Arnason scored with 1:27 left in the third. Arnason's goal was on the power play.
Analysis: Norrena made his second straight start in place of the injured Pascal Leclaire, who is only expected to return to practice Monday as he recovers from an ankle injury. Norrena will return to his backup role as soon Leclaire is healthy, so treat him as a stopgap Fantasy option for the time being. The Blue Jackets TG is at best a No. 2 Fantasy option.

Norrena loses game late Monday

News: Blue Jackets G Fredrik Norrena was in net Monday against the Ducks after starter Pascal Leclaire was put on IR with an ankle injury. Norrena made 21 saves in a 3-2 loss. He carried a 2-1 lead into the third before Anaheim rallied to put the game away with less than four minutes left on a Teemu Selanne power-play score. Norrena stopped Francois Beauchemin's shot, but the rebound went right to Selanne on the left side and he beat Norrena inside the near post for the game-winner.
Analysis: Norrena has now lost three straight outings, but finally made it through his first full game in five outings Monday. He is expected to be in net for the next week or so until Leclaire gets back, so treat him as a stopgap Fantasy option. He is usually a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Blue Jackets TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.

Leclaire won't play Monday

News: The Columbus Dispatch reports that Blue Jackets G Pascal Leclaire will not play in Monday's game vs. Anaheim. Leclaire injured his ankle on Saturday and had an MRI performed on Sunday, but the team did not release the results. Fredrik Norrena will start in his place.
Analysis: Leclaire already missed a game this season due to a wrist injury and just can't seem to shake the injury-prone label. He continues to flash a world of potential in net, but since he is a bit unreliable, consider him more of a No. 2 Fantasy option when healthy. He remains an injury-risk start for Week 4 (Oct. 27-Nov. 2).

Norrena might be needed Monday

News: The Sports Xchange reports if the Blue Jackets plan to make the playoffs this season, they might need to be in the market for a goaltender soon. Pascal Leclaire has begun to realize his potential the last few seasons, but he's never been able to shake his reputation for being injury-prone. No surprise that he left Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild midway through the second period with an ankle injury. It's unclear if Leclaire will be ready to go on Monday, when the Blue Jackets host the Anaheim Ducks in Nationwide Arena. Fredrik Norrena would start in his place.
Analysis: Norrena has struggled mightily the last two seasons. Since Jan. 1, 2008, Norrena's save percentage is a woeful .872. Still, the Blue Jackets have no one else right now to lean on, so Norrena will be in net when Leclaire can't. Norrena is primarily a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. He might be worth a stopgap start Week 4 (Oct. 27-Nov. 2).

Norrena in for injured Leclaire

News: Columbus starter Pascal Leclaire left with an injury after 25 minutes of action in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Wild and Fredrik Norrena relieved him and earned the loss. Norrena allowed one of the goals and stopped eight shots in 33:56.
Analysis: Norrena could be in goal for a few more games if Leclaire is not ready to play. Norrena is primarily a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game.

Columbus goalies fail Sat.

News: Columbus fell to Nashville 6-3 on Saturday and the Blue Jackets did not have a very good effort from their goalies. Fredrik Norrena started the game and allowed four goals while totaling just seven saves in 25 minutes before giving way to Dan LaCosta. LaCosta wasn't much better as he allowed two goals and stopped 17 shots in just over 34 minutes on the ice.
Analysis: The Blue Jackets were obviously missing starter Pascal Leclaire, who is recovering from a bruised hand. Norrena could be in goal for a few more games if Leclaire is not ready to play. Norrena is primarily a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The 22-year-old LaCosta was recently called up from the AHL and was needed immediately. He will only be around as long as Leclaire is injured and really has no Fantasy value. Continue to leave him off rosters. The Blue Jackets TG is mostly a No. 2 option.

Norrena likely to start Sat.

News: Blue Jackets goalie Pascal Leclaire stopped a hard shot with the palm side of his blocker with just over five minutes left during Friday's 5-3 win against the Predators, then left the ice in pain while holding out his bare right hand. The club said he didn't break any bones, just bruised a thumb. He will not play when the teams meet again Saturday night in Nashville. Following the game, the Blue Jackets added goalie Dan LaCosta to the roster on an emergency recall from Syracuse of the AHL. Leclaire made 24 saves in the game and allowed three even-strength goals. Fredrik Norrena replaced him and stopped all three shots he faced in the final 5:14.
Analysis: Norrena is likely to be in net Saturday against Nashville and could be in for a few more games if Leclaire is not ready to play by Tuesday. Norrena is primarily a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game.

Leclaire yanked after 19 saves

News: Columbus fell to the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday and Blue Jackets goalie Pascal Leclaire did not have a good go of things. A three-goal flurry in the second period and two more quick scores in the third overwhelmed the Columbus defense and Leclaire, who made 19 saves before getting yanked for Fredrik Norrena. Norrena picked up one save in just under 12 minutes of ice time and didn't allow another goal to score.
Analysis: The Blue Jackets will start Leclaire on most nights as long as he is healthy. He will lose about 20-25 appearances to Norrena, but Leclaire is still a viable No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Blue Jackets TG is mostly a No. 2 option as well.

Jackets to keep Norrena in routine

News: The Sports Xchange reports the bulk load of the goalie work in Columbus this season will go to Pascal Leclaire, who had nine shutouts last season and could easily have been an All-Star. Leclaire is extremely quick with the gloves and pads, but has yet to shake a reputation for being injury-prone. With 22 back-to-backs on the schedule, Fredrik Norrena can expect 20-25 starts.
Analysis: Norrena might not play more in 2008-09 than he did last season (37 appearances), but coach Ken Hitchcock has vowed to keep Norrena in more of a routine this season. "I told Freddy that he's not going to be going 3-1/2 weeks without playing," Hitchcock said. At one stretch last season, Norrena went more than a month without touching the ice. Leclaire is the real deal as long as he is healthy, but Norrena remains a very valuable No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game.

Norrena drops the ball in shootout

News: Blue Jackets G Fredrik Norrena allowed the decisive shootout goal to Patrick Kane Sunday and Columbus fell 5-4 to Chicago. Norrena made 29 saves while allowing four goals, including at least one goal in each regulation period. Norrena is now winless in five of his last six outings.
Analysis: Norrena has seen pretty much every start in net with Pascal Leclaire (concussion) sidelined, but he hasn't been very impressive. He did post a shutout in his last six starts, but has allowed three or more goals in all but two of those outings. He remains just a stopgap Fantasy option at this time. The Blue Jackets TG is a low-end Fantasy option without Leclaire.

Norrena takes loss against Predators

News: Fredrik Norrena allowed two goals in the second period, but that was all the Nashville Predators needed to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-0 on Friday night. Nashville is 15-0-1 in its last 16 meetings with Columbus, matching the longest current points streak for one team against another. That's 31 of a possible 32 points head-to-head the past two seasons.
Analysis: Norrena has been playing for the injured Pascal Leclaire (out with a concussion). Norrena should only be used in leagues that have average points per game. The Blue Jackets TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.

Norrena stops 17 shots in shutout

News: Fredrik Norrena made 17 saves for the Blue Jackets, who ended a three-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night. Norrena had his second shutout of the season and first since Feb. 16. Teammate Pascal Leclaire shut out the Blackhawks 1-0 on Jan. 24 in Chicago.
Analysis: Norrena was in net for a sixth consecutive game for the injured Pascal Leclaire (out with a concussion). Norrena should only be used in leagues that have average points per game. The Blue Jackets TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.

Norrena chased after three goals

News: Fredrik Norrena allowed three goals on 19 shots before he was replaced by Daniel LaCosta in the third period of Tuesday's 3-0 loss to the Nashville Predators. LaCosta stopped all five shots in the 13 minutes he was in the net. Columbus, which hasn't won in Nashville since April 3, 2006, lost its third straight overall.
Analysis: Norrena started a fifth straight game for the injured Pascal Leclaire (out with a concussion). Norrena should only be used in leagues that have average points per game. The Blue Jackets TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
